1) read a block of text from a local file - the text changes daily

Ugh. I've been gone for less than 6 hours and my internet connection died at home probably courtesy of my router again. So much for remoting in to my home computer while I'm out of town.

Nagios could help you

If the past is still any indication, the router is still on, and the lights will still say it has a connection.

However...

It is somewhat difficult to unplug it and plug the power right back in when I'm 4 hours away.

Configure Nagios to monitor www.google.com and if it goes down, either issue the reboot command to the router, or buy a UPS or other device which you can programatically restart

@TheUnhandledException Thats normal for reports. We often get "Deposits aren't working" after 2 hours of frantic log searching and calls. you find out that what they mean is one customer couldn't deposit less than the minimum amount. And the person who raised it doesn't really care anyway.
