No, it's changed now @Braiam, charcoals can delete Smoke in the tavern now.

@InfiniteRecursion PARSER ERROR: mind-blown

charcoal team can give command to Smokey to delete it's message in the 2-minute editing window, just like the other commands.
@undo, @pro: Smokey's supression is borked

Ha, got to read the main post

ok, who pissed off the crazy person?

you just did

4:10 PM
probably :)

@InfiniteRecursion No, the title changed; then it gets posted again.

Thanks @ProgramFox, good to know.

Q: Is there a relationship between yellow and moods?

Sklivvz A commonly held belief in visual arts and graphic design is that colours communicate specific moods. Let's concentrate on the colour yellow, for example here: The color yellow gives one a warm and cosy effect. It also arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle e...

Hmm... SmokeDetector died in Charcoal HQ.
!!/reboot

If no one posts a proper answer by tomorrow on your meta question I might write something, @inf :p

Thanks @uni, you are the best! :)

4:15 PM
Hmm... it does not reboot. I hope it's just chat web sockets that broke and not Smokey itself.
Ah, @Undo just entered :)

@ProgramFOX Maybe it's a glitch.

@SmokeDetector delete
oh right
Crap I don't have my diamond here.

hahaha

@Undo It looks like web sockets break frequently; do we need to switch to the non-websocket version (by using watch instead of watch_socket)?

It's hard to be ordinary ;)

4:17 PM
looks at all the diamonds left on the doorstep of the Tavern on the Meta

@ProgramFOX sigh Or find a way to auto-reboot the websockets.

in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 2 days ago, by ProgramFOX
@Undo I noticed that Smokey keeps running if an error occurs in a different thread. Does your auto-restart script still restart Smokey if an error occurs in a different thread?

I don't know
Probably not.
Can we make it that way @ProgramFOX?

@Undo I don't know if we can use a catch-all try-except block, but I'll look at it.

mod-nuked:

4:18 PM
@ProgramFOX thanks

@ProgramFOX I pushed a change to ChatExchange last night. That type of fix may be appropriate for the websockets too
It hasn't been merged yet
er...wow...messed up terminology. I submitted a pull request

I'm going to sleep now, someone keep our frontpage clean!

@Andy Oh, nice!

@uni: the thank you note was nuked faster than the spam posts

4:21 PM
@InfiniteRecursion yep, ha

Sam
@Unihedron Night!

Night @uni, sleep well !

thanks, good night / day!

huh, apparently I don't have access to the ChatExchange repo.

Yay! The pinned message has been unpinned.

4:24 PM
Yay! Let's pin our own message!

@Undo I think we can only achieve this by changing ChatExchange's code, which will make it harder to merge though: stackoverflow.com/a/2830127/2619912

sigh
Can we just reboot the websocket every x hours?
no matter if it's failed or not?

how about a keepalive task instead?

^

4:25 PM
@ProgramFOX I think that's covered by issue #69

@Andy That applies to throttling, doesn't it?
@Undo The web socket, or SmokeDetector?

Good luck!

@ProgramFOX Ah. You are correct. That is just retrying throttled post attempts

@SmokeDetector delete
Nope, web sockets still dead.

I'm gonna go restart it

4:28 PM
Thanks!

Then we should fix it so it dies every hour and gets restarted.
@SmokeDetector delete

@Undo Sounds good.

Random quote of the day:
I've said this over and over again, @Hot... but I'll say it again: by and large, people don't leave when you insult them; they double their resolve to annoy you further. The single best way to drive someone away is to ignore them, to give them no response whatsoever. Here's some reading for you...Shog9 ♦ 22 hours ago

6:08 PM
Is a chat room for a new site automatically created, or does it have to be created manually?

Sam
@Undo I know I know; I'm only using him to take all the command pinging, nothing more.

@uni is missing the grand debut of Pham

@Pham yo

@TGMCians 'Sup

@ProgramFOX aren't all chatrooms hosted on stackexchange anyway? So who's first to create has it?

6:11 PM
@rene Correct, but the first message of a site's chatroom is from the Stack Exchange user, with some explanation about chat.
That's only for "general discussion for [site]" rooms, not for all rooms.

Sam
I thought about giving him red eyes to help differentiate, but that'd be too creepy so I just changed the background.

@ProgramFOX hmm, I can imagine that it is a human thingy... not worth automating...

Though here it's mentioned that it's automatic.

It's automatic
I've tried to get a room created before it, it's impossible :P

I have the first Informed badge on emacs.SE :D

6:15 PM
that's a thing now?

@Undo I flag that as prove you're gaming the system.. ;)

Congrats

I didn't even have that one on my radar.

so I wanna talk to a mod who closed then deleted my question right away (on a new SE site, asking questions in meta) @RobertCartaino -- but I don't feel like it is important enough to flag the Q and bug all mods
and I don't know if emailing him would be pushy / bothersome
what to do, what to do

just a minute @rlemon, let me see if I can get him.

we probably should have it check after a few minutes through the API to see if it's still there.

6:47 PM
it didn't work

right

why ?

There's a whitelist of users that it works with

oh so i am in blacklist
:D

no

6:47 PM
@rlemon Invite to chat?

You're not in the whitelist ;)

(!whitelisted) != (blacklisted)

so everywhere milestone @Undo ...

DIE. ugh.

@bjb568 can't -- no option
(that i'm aware of)

6:48 PM
@rlemon Let it be for a while, he'll likely get your ping and if he doesn't he'll get mine.

tl;dr I asked a very open ended question on a new SE site (one recommended in the "The 7 Essential Meta Questions of Every Beta")
it was closed and deleted at the same time with a comment. I somewhat agree with the comment that it takes very long to define these things. but then maybe that blog post needs some revisions ( considering it is plastered to every page :P )

@Undo So.. this SpamRam you speak of... how long is the learning curve?

@LynnCrumbling it's private employee-only

Smokey spamming in tavern :p

@LynnCrumbling how did you manage to add yourself in whitelist ?

I believe I have @Undo to thank.

@rlemon this is emacs, right?

no
web design
I wish I was cool enough for emacs
I'm a vim user

@rlemon not particularly pushy or bothersome. But still waaay more pushy and bothersome than, y'know, flagging or even raising the issue on meta.

6:51 PM
@SmokeDetector delete

@Shog9 I would have thought flagging would be more bothersome, but I only see the chat flags :P and more often than not they are bothersome :P

Say, why doesn't Web Design have a chatroom I can find?

@rlemon that's because you haven't seen chat emails. It's all relative.

because we are corralled in the HTML room on SO
@Shog9 well I assume you can see this: meta.webdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/2/…

@rlemon can you see the comment?

6:54 PM
I agree with the comment, but I would like to put in my two cents about 1) delete immediately after close limits any conversation with him (hence me being here)
also he called me by the wrong username
I was so confused

@rlemon yeah, that's weird
unless
maybe he knows something you don't

@TGM you're on the whitelist, use your privs wisely, they can be revoked.

@Undo it's hard to keep watch on everyone while taking an impossible english test. (Which is what I happened to be doing when you pinged me)

the sites been live for very short time. I was reading the blog post and asked what seemed like the two most important questions to define.

@Undo ok thanks :)

6:55 PM
have you ever woken up in a strange bed in a house you don't recognize in some city you've never seen before, with a beautifully hand-written note on the bedside table addressed to "githubphagocyte"?

it should be made clear in that blog post not to actually ask those questions on meta
@Shog9 no, but i've often wondered why it says "Fred" on the inside of my underwear.

@rlemon oh, it's a really important question. Too important for one... uh, meta question
and yeah, we need to update that blog post

I was just looking for some quick and dirty stuff to get us going so we didn't have a flood of off topic questions
so I do agree, it was too broad for any one question, but I still think something like it would be helpful. but then again i've never been at the start of a SE site before

usually the idea with betas is to talk about the crap that comes in so that there's an example. Or that's what I've always seen done.

brb need coffee

6:57 PM
but I don't see any fault with trying to get some broad guidelines up front. Just IMO

@rlemon the only way to handle that is to let folks start asking stuff... and then start discussing stuff that doesn't seem "quite right".
@rlemon For the first few weeks, you'll have few enough questions to discuss specific cases - and the discussions you have will build the foundation for the broader discussions that must follow

@Undo canicanicani?

I don't feel like taking all the letters this Christmas, so I think I'll redirect them to @SmokeDetector first and only read the ones that match any of its profanity filters.

Questions seeking debugging help ("why isn't this code working?") must include the desired behavior, a specific problem or error and the shortest code necessary to reproduce it in the question itself.
