Q: Do onions become toxic or otherwise dangerous within a day of a being cut open?

FlimzyI saw a new "health advice" meme on Facebook today: Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secret...

Laugh at that picture, people. Laugh at it.

Seriously?

Yeah, just you.

IMHO, the higher rep a user has, the shorter the answers are

@Bart

@CarrieKendall Not An Answer == "did not even attempt to answer the question", which wasn't really the issue with that answer - it did attempt to answer the question (especially as it was originally written), but was now useless as the links were broken - it was eventually deleted in response to a flag that pointed this out.
An answer that offers a bare link with no explanation can fail to be an answer, but that really depends on the context; as a rule of thumb, if you can't glean any context from the answer without following the links, then it's NAA - otherwise, it's something else.
Again, in this case the question was kinda asking for links (I've edited it now to move it away from that) - this is a problem with the question though, not an answer which obliges. The broken links were the big issue.
Broken links may be fixed by an editor, or removed by a moderator. Which is appropriate depends on the situation.

Q: Your answer is in another castle: when is an answer not an answer?

Shog9I think we can all agree, this sucks: If you've been around a little while, you've probably encountered hundreds of answers like this in various forums, some of them even marked as "The Answer" by well-meaning1 forum admins looking to close a thread. We could try to enumerate the commonly-obse...

@Shog9: while you're here, do you know if someone's looking into this: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/231892/… (or have an idea yourself)?

Thanks @GnomeSlice. After 7 hours of meetings I can use it. :)

@Bart x_x

@Shog9 wouldn't broken links not be an answer?
also, the question explicitly asked:
> If no examples, what are some decent use cases for these two technologies together?
Either way, should broken link answers be flagged as other with that explained?

2:33 PM
@CarrieKendall broken links are their own problem. As I said, a broken link may be fixed - indeed, should be fixed in cases where they are worth fixing.

That's the problem with link-only answers..
it was a link to some obscure blog. After the blog died/moved the answer became 100% useless... Either way, I am not looking for abstract theory. How should that answer be flagged, or should it be flagged?

@CarrieKendall one of them. But broken links are a problem that goes beyond link-only answers: many a fine answer has suffered from them. At the same time, many link-only answers are worthless even when the link works.
@CarrieKendall "links are broken - answer should be removed"

thanks

...and then either fix or close the question

what's wrong with the question?
familiarity with ASP.NET's MVC makes the question clear to me (convention-base all the things!). It is slightly broad, but asking how should these two different technologies work together is a fairly sensible question. I was able to easily derive that from the unedited version.

2:40 PM
@CarrieKendall so was I, that's why I edited it.

@rene on what question?

done...

eh, i'm not here for the politics, just would like to know why a mod declined the flag

2:42 PM
@CarrieKendall because in its original form, the answer did attempt to answer the question - which is the criteria that must not be met in order for a NAA flag to be approved.

that's highly aguable
but you know that
you're very well versed in this, i'm sure

well, you're arguing it, so... ;-)

would you approve the NAA flag?

probably not, unless I noticed the broken links. Even then, I might opt to edit them to archive.org replacements instead. Depends on the mood I'm in.

Cannot you get the url by default when the web server runs your presumably cgi binary? Parsing the domain name out of that could work, couldn't it? — Laszlo Papp 8 mins ago
I think it could be an interesting question eventually, python has a parser for that, Qt does not have off-hand to get the domain name out of any url.

@LaszloPapp but people should understand downvote is not "jumping on you" but the community way to tell you "something is wrong, improve it"

@ShadowWizard: yada-yada.

@LaszloPapp you read my mind! :)

@Laszlo Papp I wrote a web server for example a simple web server. It handles only statistics. Now the server works like this: the user's query parsing, searching host header, sending the page. When a request comes in via https, I can not parse headers because they are encrypted. On wikipedia says that TLS protocol is designed specifically to distinguish a site that is requested, but I do not know how to apply it with Qt's help — tioo 1 min ago
at this point, I doubt he wrote the webserver himself.
I resolved the magic for the other question. I feel myself gandalf now.
