> At some point in the future, I think it'll make sense to just require registration to ask questions on sites that get more than a certain number of questions per day; in theory at least, the extra overhead would be offset by the reduction in confusion and support costs. meta.stackexchange.com/a/243820

user315433
That was back in 2014. Are we in the future yet?

What if A.I. took the roles of moderators? By analysing the patterns & stalking the likely offenders as soon as they sign on? And provide remedies as criteria met?

user202362
I always think humans are too dumb to create truly impressive A.I.s

12:23 AM
@404 Stack Overflow requires registration before asking. I think it's the only site; at least Super User doesn't.

@Shog9 I only get 4 non-review closevotes on most sites. This makes me not want to use the review.
Which isn't optimal.
I haven't read it all, but I think that's what Alexis has been saying as well.

RSO seems like a very cool mod to keep the game interesting.

Hey, @bjb, at my new job one of my coworkers uses the same picture of a cat that you use, albeit without the sunglasses.
It was an... amusing discovery.

Yeah, I'm quite popular due to my cuteness and fluffiness.

@hichris123 Where's the irony?

That being unpublished broke a lot of node builds.

I don't see irony. I see a bug.

Noun: irony ‎(countable and uncountable, plural ironies)
  1. A statement that, when taken in context, may actually mean something different from, or the opposite of, what is written literally; the use of words expressing something other than their literal intention, often in a humorous context.
  2. Dramatic irony: a theatrical effect in which the meaning of a situation, or some incongruity in the plot, is understood by the audience, but not by the characters in the play.
  3. Ignorance feigned for the purpose of confounding or provoking an antagonist; Socratic irony.
  4. The state of two usually unrelated entities, parties, actions, etc. being related through a common connection in an uncommon way.
  5. (informal, sometimes proscribed) Contradiction between circumstances and expectations; condition contrary to what might be expected. [from the 1640s]
Adjective: irony ‎(comparative more irony, superlative most irony)
  1. Of or pertaining to the metal iron.
  2. The food had an irony taste to it.
> Of or pertaining to the metal iron.

Oh, that definition. Got it.

1:35 AM
@Bart Did you respond to the smiting stick call?
I'm learning a ton today about what we screwed up. This piece is my favorite so far: https://medium.com/@glitterwitch/stack-overflow-s-developer-survey-analysis-hurts-women-ec4d568e2352#.l5hkv7ukq
@aurelgasser @hairboat It's really hard to be angry and not just say "I HATE YOU" in multiple ways - she nailed that, quite eloquently.

That response to the survey was a good one, though unfortunately ultimately not super surprising. I really like SO, but I have gotten used to icky framing enough to not even pay it much heed. I really appreciate other people being able to write good, detailed responses, though.

What I *did* think about is the intimidation factor. Am I sometimes harsh with people asking questions on this site? Of course I am. I try to be as nice as I can (when I see something I don’t like but don’t have the energy to write a nice comment, I will downvote/close vote and move on), but it comes up frequently t
I sometimes think about the obvious problem that both sides are exhausted. Established users are too tired of the poor questions to have patience, but new users are too intimidated to feel comfortable asking questions. How the heck do you address that?

Is it like, "I hate SO so much that I love it?"

I’m not sure I understand what you mean...?

If SE has communities of users, what do you call groups of users on Facebook?

1:52 AM
@AlexisKing Doesn't matter if you're established users or new users, all of them should have the capability of 'learning'. If they don't want to learn how SE works, then I don't mind to not welcoming them.

@AlexisKing I don't know if you can. And you can't stop it. It doesn't matter if today we all started being super super nice, people would still think SO is mean - and it doesn't matter if it's true or not.

@AndrewT. There is a fine line between expecting new users to understand how the system works and being straight up hostile when they fail to grasp it.
@hichris123 I think if we all started being super nice, people would take notice. But that isn’t going to happen.

@AlexisKing Maybe. But you'd still have people afraid to ask questions; people who think SO is comprised of evil humans who want to attack you; people who were "wronged" at one time or another by downvoting or reputation or closing. Indeed, how would you solve that? Perceptions/stereotypes don't go away overnight.

user315433
First complaint about shortener ban: Common online compiler blacklisted

1:56 AM
Back to each personality, I guess. I know I can't be very super nice (I don't play hostile card though), that's why I don't leave many comments recently. But I've seen someone that is always super nice (and fortunately, also guiding), so I leave the task to them.

user315433
I almost never comment on posts I don't like. One exception is pointing out how typing their question into Google leads directly to the answer. I still hope this skill can be learned.

@hichris123 I think it is unavoidable that some people can’t be pleased, but SO has a reputation for being mean, and that is not a groundless accusation.

@AlexisKing changing the subject slightly. OMG LOGISTICS ROBOTS ARE SOOO GOOD!

user315433
Otherwise, I'd rather direct my patience where I'm paid to be patient, welcoming and whatnot.

@JamesENL They are! :D

2:00 AM
And now I've got construction drones I can start meta-factory producing

@AlexisKing Quite true.

One of the first things I used my construction drones on was emulating your solar farm
@AlexisKing oh good theres a mod that lets you construct purple science packs out of other science packs

@JamesENL Are you concerned alien packs are too easy or just don’t want to deal with the biters? FWIW, biter combat is pretty trivial once you get power armor and poison capsules + destroyer capsules.

@AlexisKing But on peaceful mode they don't expand their nests so eventually I'll hit a point of diminishing returns, having to expand out geometrically trying to find new nests

@JamesENL Oh, they don’t even expand? For some reason I thought they expanded, just didn’t attack until you attacked them.

2:09 AM
No, the nests stay fixed :(

Hmm. Well, you get 10 purple science packs per alien artifact, and each base drops a whole bunch of artifacts, so it’s actually probably not too too bad. Could be annoying though, yes.

user315433
The PPCG chat zoo became a subject of meta post, The state of chat.

Oh really? 10 purple per artifact? That's much better than I was expecting. gaming.stackexchange.com/q/212395/80115

Zoo on the Meta.

@JamesENL Yeah. The last few pieces of research take a ton of science packs, but those are pretty much just the optional combat upgrades, which are irrelevant if you are playing on peaceful, anyway.

2:14 AM
Ahhh ok then! I'll keep that in mind then
I like the power armour though

The crazy expensive upgrades are the follower robot count increases, which go up to level 20. That one takes like 2k science packs, but nothing else takes anywhere near that many.

@404 "Signal to noise ratio" no kidding.

What if(hypotheticals)

Proposed Q&A site for someone who has an hypothetical situation he wants answered.

Currently in definition.

user315433
This is supposed to be a fork of Worldbuilding

There's a certain type of site that's bound to be awful I think. Sites where the questions are interesting and where everybody wants to ask one, but where those questions don't have real answers.

I say it’s fine, with the caveat that the only person allowed to answer questions is Randall Monroe.

5:53 AM
Then you have this problem where nothing gets closed because everybody upvotes on the basis of high-fiving eachother for asking a weird question. So you're attracting all this noise and nothing's getting filtered.

(sorry, I was too lazy to open and search the site)

There's no way that site is going to attract Munroe quality answers, unless the core community is as focused as the people on Skeptics.
But like, some of the top voted example questions are kinda asking for trouble, like "What would modern transportation be like if we never had rubber or any elastomers?"

Kinda interesting, bound to get upvotes, never to be closed, impossible to answer. Bad combo.
@404 Yeah, but it's a short-sighted background story.

user315433
I'm not brave enough to peer into the depth of WB.

5:57 AM
Unless the Whatif site is only open to people who have participated on Worldbuilding and read those conversations, that "background story" will be irrelevant to the shape the site actually takes.
You'll have the reasonable WB overflow. Then you'll have everybody else.

My only experience with worldbuilding is when I give into my desires to click on funny-sounding HNQ titles.

WB is pretty cool.
