Q: Apple's open letter - they can't or won't backdoor iOS?

TTTApple released an open letter to the public outlining their reasons for not complying with the FBI's demands to modify the iPhone's security mechanism. Here's a summary: The FBI has an iPhone in their possession which they would like to access data from. The phone is locked and fully encrypted...

sd k

Random Number Time

2:32 PM
Very interesting question.
not because of the tinfoil part "they are gonna create a vulnerability".
but because of the precedent it would present.
at least from my grasp of the whole problem.

What I found interesting was how specific the FBI's request to Apple was, and the question of how much the FBI actually knows about iOS and what Apple's really capable of.

> SUE TEH FBI
> Apple, 2016

supposedly the FBI court order asks for a custom firmware image that 1. is unique to the iPhone in question, and 2. will remain under Apple control the entire time.
I think #1 is actually possible, since the images are signed by a unique device key; I wonder how they intend to enforce #2 -- will the FBI let Apple do all the brute-forcing and data extraction and then wipe the phone?
or are they hoping that once the firmware is on one phone the FBI can just seize it and extract the image for themselves?

Maybe one of them wasn't low rep?

Possibly... all three were destroyed so they have to have been below 500 rep, but besides that I can't tell.

@hichris123 well, the trigger is users with <10 rep
@JonEricson maybe the high amount of views, 6k views are a lot on a low traffic site.

@ShadowWizard yeah... doesn't seem very likely though as I can find no other posts by these users (of course, I'm manually searching since you can't search for posts by deleted users). And none of the posts had upvotes...

I thought the protected question banner usually goes above all the answers?

10:59 PM
@MikeEdenfield By design, it is placed at the bottom of the list for those not yet able to answer protected questions.

From a UX standpoint, this is better because it would be less likely for the user to be confused about a missing answer box at the bottom of the page where it is expected.
It reduces workload on the community because it makes it less likely that someone would ask on Meta asking for an explanation for the missing answer box when it really should be obvious why.
A core design philosophy of the Stack Exchange platform is that the moderators' and community's time and effort are highly valuable resources and must be conserved to the greatest extent possible.

Q: Eeeek! Something stole the protection! (Why is this protected question unprotected?)

ɥʇǝSJon Ericson asked me to report this (apparent) bug. When he tried to protect this question someone (or something) stole the question's protection, which has since been missing: The question shows no sign of having the protection removed, thus I believe it was abducted. I am sure justice...

yeah it makes perfect sense once you said it I had just never seen a protected question on a site where I had low rep.
I also assume the association bonus doesn't count towards my required 10 rep :)

This is why there is extensive reliance on automation. As much as human intervention may be preferable over automation in many situations, it's better to make a few mistakes due to automation being applied incorrectly than to waste hundreds or thousands of hours of human time handling every routine moderation task.

11:06 PM
@MikeEdenfield that is true
Protected questions on sites other than SO are quite rare, probably

After all, time spent dealing with moderation and Meta questions is time not spent on programming and debugging, and we all know how little time programmers have for anything other than their jobs...
@ShadowWizard The broader scope of Super User tends to bring lots of users inappropriately answering "me too" or "thanks". I've actually protected quite of few questions there.
Alright, I have a lot of work to do. See ya.

@AquaTart will it make my penis bigger?
Hey, I can handle flags now on chat.SE!

welcome to hell.

I fail to find the above message offensive.

you'll get used to that.

Yeah, basically, chat.SE has bs flags
and russian flags
and then rarely, a decent flag

11:36 PM
my very unscientific estimate is that roughly 986.45621367% of chat.SE flags are invalid.
though I don't speak russian, so...

I saw one of the mods using a translator to handle a russian flag
and the guy was yelling at us in English telling us to shoo because we didn't speak russian

the only thing more annoying that the excessive flags are the fights about the flags, or the fights about the fights about the flags.

lol

@MikeEdenfield Flag fights! You mean capture the flag? ;)
