A: Choose to see reduced ads or not

rossipediaThis has been enabled for non-employees, and will roll out with the next build. Once it's live (sometime in the next couple hours), it will appear under the Preferences section of your user profile: If you have the "Reduce Ads" privilege (>= 200 rep on Stack Overflow), you'll now see the follo...

They have so little work to do that they are adding an option for users to voluntarily increase the mount of ads they see? Amazing.

People wanted it...

So what?

And Ross is a Careers dev, I believe.

Meh, careers…

9:41 PM
also we already had it. It's a pretty useful thing to have around for testing, if you're an ad dev.
so the dev work here was more or less removing user.IsEmployee from three places where that formerly removed the option / kept it from working.
I suspect Bret probably spent more time explaining why we didn't make the option available than Ross did actually enabling it.
Which isn't to say this won't totally end up being a waste of resources now that it's public and we have to support it... But, we'll see.

So… about making SO not be full of crap… any non-negative progress?

You know I can't see that…

slacker

Double-slacker... I have more rep than bjb.

9:52 PM
I stopped trying to outrep you 2 elections ago.

bjb is marty mc fly confirmed?

I'm timetravling at a constant rate forward in time. Am I supposed to be doing something else in this axis?

hrm.
if I reenable ads, but never click on any of them, does that ultimately reduce their value to SO?

Whatever you do, it'll probably be less than 5¢ of value moved.

there's a payment for viewing, and a payment for clicking and visiting the site
it's mostly views these days
you pay $$$ for x000 views

9:59 PM
yeah but I would assume the advertisers track the effectiveness of their views and are willing to give better rates to sites with higher click-throughs.
what I'm saying is, I'm interested in seeing what kind of stuff gets advertised here because it's most likely relevant to me but I'm not really looking to buy anything at the moment.
so I don't want to start displaying ads that I condition myself to ignore if there's even a tiny net negative to SO; I'll just leave them off for the time being

Why do you care if you directly lower SO's revenue by 5¢? You generate way more value than that by providing answers.

@MikeEdenfield Theoretically, yes.
But it seems Careers generates much more revenue vs. ads...

@bjb568 lets pretend for a moment I haven't answered a question on SO in years.

But you have. And that counts.

huh. more than I thought, actually.

10:03 PM
And even if for the next 100 years you keep using SO but don't provide any more value, you'll still have a net benefit.

It's fine. It's a good lesson.

Now we know who's on the dark side...

@hichris123 some users place an extremely high value on their right to be uselessly snarky on the internet.

It's better to have rep whores also give askers a poke than to just keep the positive (but deleterious) relationship and feedback loop going.
Obviously tho, a much better solution is, ya know, moderation.

10:06 PM
@bjb568 what
You honestly think someone who just wants an answer to their question and doesn't care about quality will go "oh yeah, maybe I should read the manual..."? Not a chance.

I'm just saying anything to decrease relationship between 2 and 3 is good.
If we make the site really unwelcoming to one of the groups, hooray.

It's an eternal September, @bjb568. Nothing you do will stop it.
2

I've long accepted that.
So go DevDoodle!

a tiny snarky negative-feedback comment at the bottom of the answer after you've already provided positive feedback by solving their problem is unlikely to have any impact at all.
no more than literally copy/pasting from the man pages will

10:09 PM
Meh, whatever. All I'm saying is it's not worth removing.

@bjb568 is that a diagram of Stack Overflow or the Twilight universe?
2

Perhaps both.

A: Why is Stack Overflow so negative of late?

Mysticial Why is Stack Overflow so negative of late? I hate to pile on, but I couldn't resist summarizing the problem. And I apologize ahead of time for any potentially offensive language that I might use. Basically there are 4 camps of users on Stack Overflow: The "caretakers" who want to keep the...

@MikeEdenfield Yeah. All it does is make you look rude...

the guy who got Pluto demoted to non-planet thinks there's another planet.

@Quill Wow, pop music that doesn't really suck. Awesome!

10:11 PM
-__- it's green day
It's a model that accurately represents pretty much any community where work earns you points

People will spend time amassing points doing whatever they can, and then they'll fight hard to protect it.
Rules are things not to be seen doing while moderation or narks hang around
And unfortunately, we're narks
we just get community power here, so we're a hybrid mix of the two
ever tried playing on any Garry's Mod server, ever?
or generic survival game

I have no clue what you're talking about, so... maybe? :P

rep whores, vampires, mods and cleanup crew are a model that fits many things, not just SE
to think it's a new problem to SE is ignorance

yeah. No one has solved this problem yet though... :(

10:17 PM
It's also a problem exacerbated by scale. So go anywhere big and powered by UGC…

Q: You hate <s>hats</s> reputation? Klick here to get rid of it

Vogel612Soo... I recently read a meta-post about the inherent problems of reputation. It listed some things like: Confirmation bias. Demotivating for low-rep users. Hubris and elitism of high-rep users over low-rep users. Incorrect representation of competence. ... So I thought to myself: "How would ...

if you don't like magical points ^

@hichris123 Eh, that sounds muddy.
Oh hey, Debussy.

or just, you know:

@bjb568 I haven't even listened to it. :P I just picked it because of the name.

10:30 PM
Meh, ok, but pretty simple.

people should not be scared of pop music videos.
embrace your inner 80s.
if you're going to make a cheesy overproduced 80s pop music video do it right damnit.

10:56 PM
@Shog You about? Can we have some input at SOCVR regarding pun-less titles with the new BR system?

lol
No matter what the change... bikeshedding must occur.

@MikeEdenfield oh god, it's out of tune
It's going from tonic to flat subtonic too much.

SIR ! AT THIS TIME I CAN REALY MARRY YOU. thanks — Soufiane.ess 3 hours ago

Oh god they just sung the tonic flat. Are they tone deaf?
The female keeps singing the 2nd degree flat too.
Some of the percussion could use some… quantization.
Ugh, I like the modulation thing they're doing, but I think they should do it in a perfect tuning for the key they're in, not just equal temperament.
… does anybody here know anything about music?

nope. I can't even tune a ukulele

sd f

@Sam what do you mean?
make the title descriptive enough that I don't need to read the whole post to figure out what's being requested
that shouldn't be hard.

Speaking of BRs, we still haven't burninated the user with fire.

11:43 PM
pending after four days. nice.

4 days? That's nothing.

we have like 15 minute average flag handling time on CR. I wonder what SO's average flag handling stats are

Bad.

they're probably not too bad considering the amount of content

11 hours, 32 minutes over the last 16.8K flags handled (past 7 days)

11:48 PM
@Quill IMHO an indicator another action should (have been)/be taken ... hard if you try to understand what you did wrong/not good enough ... just a speculation

@Shog9 that's not too bad, considering everything

16.8k flags indicates that flags are no longer used for exceptional circumstances.

Aren't those moderator flags and not regular flags?

@Quill That likely counts all flags handled by moderators. So not community-handled ones, but NAAs that mods handle would count.

@bjb568 he downvoted me. PLZ DELET HIM NOW!!!1!!

11:53 PM
@Quill You should ask the SO mods... they have some great flags.
I'd bet they see that daily.

Being an SO mod would be a hard job. I certainly have my hats off to them
2

@bjb568 there can (and often are) multiple flags per post. And in that timeframe, there were 138K posts created. I'm not sure off-hand which flags that includes, but I'd expect it also includes comment flags - 267K of those in that time period. Big numbers all around...

Oh, well, bad comments certainly aren't exceptional.
