Q: Add How-To-Geek onebox support

PandyaI've been finding How-To-Geek provides very useful articles especially related to computing. It can be useful for sharing How-To-Geek articles to users in chat for our trilogy sites, SU, AU, U&L and in other rooms also while talking with technical discussion related to computing. So, I'm request...

2:20 PM
@Pandya well, anything can be oneboxed in theory, but so far the team responded to very few such requests. No harm done in asking though. :)

@ShadowWizard Yes, I can understand. I'll not be worried of down-votes.

OK, time to start. It's now or never.
So, it all begins back when I was a kid and a teenager: I used to play D&D with friends (real D&D with pen, paper, and dice, not online) and liked reading fantasy books.
My first "serious" fantasy series was Dragonlance, the original trilogy. I read it at 14, and even though it was translated version the translation was good and I was hooked. I loved it.
But at 14 I still didn't have access to the Internet, or any real interest in programming.
Fast forward four years: at 18, the last novels I read before joining the army (and thus losing the ability to read properly, not enough time) were Forgotten Realms.
For some reason, the thing I remembered the most from those was Shadow magic, though during the army service I forgot many other things from the books.
Fast forward four years: I'm 22, after army, and starting to learn Computer Science (aka programming) in a university, while also starting to work in a small company as a very junior programmer. Finally I have full and daily access to Internet.
First thing on the wide internet, I decided to join a chat. It was MSN chat.
The chat asked me to pick a nickname to be used. I did not think of any name before, actually not even fully knowing what chat is, how it works, etc.
Thinking fast, the word "shadow" from Forgotten Realms surfaced, and my favorite character class in D&D was Wizard. Boom. We got a winner.
And that same nickname served me ever since, through many chats and forums.
(more about those on request. :))
That's it folks! (turns out it wasn't a big deal to tell ;))
and since I know @M.A.R. just love bookmarks...

@Pandya whoops, I thought you asked how I came with the name Shadow Wizard. So, see above for that one... lol
How I reached Stack Exchange... dang this is whole new story.
Do I still have that muse?
hmm... looking inside
Sorry @Pan for this you'll have to wait until I'm in the mood again. But long story short, Stack Exchange is my third stop.
(fourth if you consider a small forum...)
@Bebs you might also be interested to read how I came with my nickname, see above. :)
(I know @ber and @Dro will just get bored ;))
(and @rene will be thrilled, but @rene doesn't like too many pings. Right, @rene? ;))
huh, fast as ever :D

9:18 PM
?
What are you up to?

> might also be interested to read how I came with my nickname, see above
@rene Well, blame @Pan! He asked me to tell my history. :D
My bad memory stored wrong question, but no big deal...

It is a good read ;)

military service is mandatory in Israel, right?

@rene yeah. But even so, many find ways to not serve, most by faking medical conditions.

9:27 PM
OK

I assume you weren't in any army, @rene?

Nope, my year was not selected, there were too many

@rene year? selected? So at your country it's being random?
@djsmiley2k I think I've posted message without enough knowledge about oneboxing. — Pandya 7 hours ago
@Pan if it's result of misunderstanding feel free to delete, no real point leaving it around.
What did you think onebox is doing?

@ShadowWizard in theory every year of birth had to do service when they reached the age of 16 or 18. But if there were simply too many newborns in that year they skipped that whole year.

@rene huh, so weird. And those who do, for how long do they serve? Can they decide to quit in the middle or not join the army?

9:38 PM
@ShadowWizard I recall it was 9 months or so?

@rene dunno, here it's 3 years. 9 months is really not enough for anything, only the basic training is about two months.
(I think my training was three months, not sure)

Yeah, I can't find a definitve reference but for sure it wasn't 3 years
The whole thing of having to serve was suspended in 1997

huh, four months
The Israeli Artillery Corps (Hebrew: חיל התותחנים‎‎, Cheyl HaTothanim) is the Israel Defense Forces corps responsible for operating medium and long-range artillery. The current commander of the Artillery Corps is Brigadier General Roy Riftin. He replaced Brig. Gen. David Swissa. The corps is tasked with two principal missions: Assisting IDF maneuvering forces, at the place, time and with the firepower required. Paralyzing and destroying enemy targets throughout the IDF zone of operations. == Structure == The Artillery Corps is an integral corps of GOC Army Headquarters. It is a diverse corps, with...
> New recruits go through four months of basic training
@rene meaning anyone can decide not to serve just because he doesn't want to?

It is a bit difficult: you're still registered for military service but you're not called for duty.

So @rene you never touched a firearm?

9:47 PM
No, I don't think so. Maybe I touched my dads pistol while he was working as a police officer but I don't recall

@rene police officer... nice! So he didn't urge you to join the army or police? :)

Nah, they left me free to choose any direction I wanted

Anyway, you don't miss that much... using the firearm in a shooting range is pretty thrilling at first, but handling the weapon, having to carry it anywhere (even to toilets with you) is a real headache. D:

lol

(not talking about pistols of course, but those big rifles like M16)
In the army even officers have rifles and not pistols, though smaller like micro-M16

9:54 PM
Yeah, that are the type of things you don't easy put in your pocket ;)

@rene not to mention the artillery gun itself, which is the actual weapon being used. Many tons of steel and oil. :P

Having lived in the Naval town of Den Helder I know what big guns look like.

@rene what do you mean? The guns of the war ships?
My gun was bigger! ;)

@ShadowWizard yep

hmm...

‹See Tfd› A self-propelled gun (SPG) is a form of self-propelled artillery, and in modern use is usually used to refer to artillery pieces such as howitzers. Self-propelled guns are mounted on a motorised wheeled or tracked chassis. As such the gun can be maneuvered under its own power as opposed to a towed gun that relies upon a vehicle or other means to be moved on the battlefield. Self-propelled guns are combat support weapons; they are employed by combat support units fighting in support of, or attached to, the main combat units: infantry and armour. Self-propelled guns are best at providing...
Those are my guns ^

Hmm, nice

I served on one looking exactly like this ^

You can do some damage with that ...

@rene yeah, but it's not accurate at all.
Its main usage is to rescue trapped forces.
As for killing bad guys.. well let's just say that out of about 1000 shells fired in order to kill, based on intelligence, only one really hit the target.
But it's still cheaper than using smart missiles and that stuff, so it's still being used. :)

10:03 PM
the numbers is what count here

@FOX9000 jungle

@ShadowWizard elephant

And I expect the receiving end would be pretty scared if that kind of stuff drops nearby ...

@rene heh, true... never been nearby such an explosion, "only" mortar shells/projectiles which are much smaller. Few of those exploded ~100 meters away back in 2006.
And it was scary enough...

Can imagine that, yeah

10:08 PM
Off to hunt some monsters now (FF 15), cya!
