I don't think so, Zored.
In rare cases with especially good questions, they can be. But the cookie cutter ones, definitely not.

Q: Server Time Jumped Ahead 7 Months

Mikey BCentOS 5.x My CentOS server appears to have jumped ahead 7 months. I'm not sure how or why. Are there any logs in CentOS that could provide more insight here? Unfortunately, ntpd was not running. I've since configured/enabled it and the time/date has been corrected. -M

Ben
we could make a meta topic saying "should 'recommend me web hosting' questions be closed as off topic" and all vote it up

I was probably going to do that as well.

Ben
yeah it's probably not a bad idea
then we could refer people to the meta topic and tell them it's discouraged
(provided the votes swung that way, obviously)

I think half the meta regulars are in this room right now.

Ben
this is probably true, but "please refer to the Server Fault chat room on 7th September @ ~18:15 GMT" is a bit of a mouthful to post as a comment :)

5:17 PM
@Zoredache: In general "Do my shopping for me" questions are frowned upon

How about, "help me restrict my candidate list" type questions?

There are lots of stats that are visible. Are there any stats, that show how many authenticated users are visiting a site? Specifically, I am somewhat curious who visits meta.serverfault, and the frequency of peoples visits

Maybe if they need some specific requirements and are having trouble finding it that is okay
@Zoredache: Not that I am aware of, we generally get that stuff from analytics

quantcast.com/meta.serverfault.com shows some data, but I don't know how valid it is.

Which reminds me I was thinking of maybe trying to set up awstats with haproxy
Anyone know if that handles a lot of log data well?

5:27 PM
@KyleBrandt awstats?
or haproxy?
I use awstats but not haproxy

Q: Free Resource For Windows Scripting

shipmasterI have to automate several tasks on a windows 2003 server machine. Is there a free resource out there that can act as a reference for windows s...

awstats handles a lot of log data well.
The initial generation will take a while but subsequent updates are incremental.

MikeThe situation is this, I have a desktop machine at home and a work laptop which i connect to my home network via wireless. I then connect to my works network using a vpn. I couldn't help but notice that the threshold for the tag-badges was dropped to 100 upvotes recently. I wasn't anywhere near the 400 needed for any of 'em, and suddenly I have three.

Pretty cool, IMHO.

the threshhold for silver was and still is 400
but they added bronze tag badges

Aaaaah.

I was confused as to why Jeff edited my last answer - and added a verbatim quote from Wikipedia (a site I had cited) - is that generally accepted as the done thing when paraphrasing from another site?

5:52 PM
There are gold tag badges too now, if you get 1000 upvotes in a tag.
@Izzy, link?

A: How can someone get a single character domain?

IzzyIt was purchased before 1993 by Weinstein & DePaolis, and subsequently sold to Paypal (or the company was bought out). In 1993 IANA reserved all remaining single letter second-level domains, and grandfathered the ones already issued. Other functional, corporate examples domains are t.co (Tw...

I didn't want to direct quote from the site, as that's kind of cheap/plaigerising, so I paraphrased the salient points, and then linked back to the resource I used
Then Jeff came along a while later and added the direct quote. No issues with that, just want to know as a go-forward if that's the done thing. Don't spend enough time on Meta to know if it is

But wikipedia is also CC-wiki, and including the quote, along with the required link isn't plagerizing.

So if it's from a CC source, we can direct quote and cite?

IMHO, Whenever possible, a good answer should include as much of the detail as possible in the actual answer body.

and if it's not, it's better to paraphrase?

5:56 PM
@Izzy, usually you can answer and cite from any source, as long as your answer adds enough commentary...

Hmmm

But wikipedia, is a particurarly safe resource to quote/cite
at least from a legal standpoint...

heh ;)

Check for accuracy, in case some vandals where having fun...

Aye. I just wish Jeff had put a comment in the revision so I could see his thinking behind the edit!

5:59 PM
I suspect his thinking was, 'this would be a better answer if the following info was included'.

Fair enough

Q: client_port -1 in pg_stat_activity

tat.wrightI'm trying to trace the source of postgres queries identified by a pid. Normally you can do this by finding the client_addr and client_port fields in the pg_stat_activity table. @Warner: Ah thanks

You know what we don't have? A politics tag. I don't know the professional sysadmin who doesn't have to deal with politics in some way. Be it arm-wrestling with the Telecom guys over something to pushing through budget proposals.

Ben
that surprises me, but i'm not devastated that doesn't exist really
of all the random tags, i am actually really surprised!

I swear I have seen politics used...

Perhaps it got retagged elsewhere.

maybe it got removed along with the subjective tags?
I suppose I could be thinking of questions on stackoverflow though

6:30 PM
Politics are particularly challenging for me lately, things are more stressful than usual.

Q: Barriers to IPv6 deployment: addressing

sysadmin1138There are several things that are keeping IPv6 deployment from being a topic of active discussion here at my work. There are the usual technical issues, but one non-technical one appears to be a major stumbling block on the path to actually getting a deployment project going. Addresses, memorizi...

@Warner: I have found if I don't call everyone else a complete idiot for their opinion the politics are a little bit easier ... that is as far as I have got though ;-)

@sysadmin1138, do you actually have your IPV6 address space? I didn't think K-20 had assigned any yet

K20 has one listed for their side of our internet connection, so I assume they do.
2607:fa78:1:1e1:0:0:0:2 according to them.

Haha, Kyle.

6:43 PM
so I apparently forgot to shutdown my laptop before thowing it into the bag this morning ... holy crap that sucker was hot

If you can get that far I think you are ahead of 2/3rds of admins :-)

@Zypher: Oh I did that one, it was in my backpack and it was a hot day ... so I kept complaining how hot I was :-P

hahaha ... nice, i think i'm gonna let it chill out and cool down before i turn it back on
the padding in the backpack is apparently a great insulator

Yea, lots more to it Kyle but I'm not comfortable in having it recorded on a public log. I have no trouble getting along with most people regardless of function.
Hopefully you get quality responses to your IPv6 question, @sysadmin1138. That's a candidate for external promotion in my mind.

I'm hoping. Overcoming inertia is the major problem right now, and coming up with such a simple thing as the short-hand way of referring to subnets will help a lot.

Brian R. BondyI'm trying to compare 2 versions of a backup software product. I setup all IO to go to a dedicated drive. @sysadmin1138: Perhaps if you practice your mental hexadecimal math you can find a formula ;-)

Unfortunately, too many of our desktop folk refer to /24's as Class C's, and things like /25's and /26's as "a 128" or "a 192".
Or worse, "one of those funny subnet masks".

I still use "class C" in conversation. I consider it distinguishing as long as you know the difference. ;)

@zoredache Looks like K-20 intended to have their IPv6 stuff done in 2009. I don't have the contacts to verify that, though.
wa-k20.net/docs/NTSCMinutes2008-01-09.doc is where I pulled the info from. Point 7.

9:01 PM
just saw an interesting new twist on password requirements, they don't care about the password, but by god your username must fist the strong password criteria

I ran into something kinda like that recently. A site required letters and numbers in the username.

@Zypher That's an interesting idea, really..

well, reduce this to its radical minimum... codinghorror.com/blog/2005/10/…

Anyone happen to know about IIS shared configuration? I am curious if each server keeps a local copy or not ...

Hey there @JeffAtwood! How goes?
@JeffAtwood That is a radical idea -- I haven't read that before.
I think my users would balk like crazy -- heck, I think our design team would too :-)

Ben
9:10 PM
ooh since @JeffAtwood is here - have i been totally ignorant for ages, or is that "thing" (recent posts?) in the top left corner new.... and more importantly.... can i turn it off - i've noticed it for about the past hour and it's already annoying me

@KyleBrandt Sorry, I'm an apache guy
@Ben New to me and I agree, it can be distracting

Ben
i keep thinking i am missing somebody say something, but it's that recent posts thingy-majig.

@Ben You could ask @Shog9, he's in The Tavern and he might know

Ben
if i wanted recent posts, i would go to Server Fault and press F5 :)

Yeah I hide posts from the feed in here

9:12 PM

Ben
yeah, i blocked Server Fault and Feeds for the same reason - they were a bit annoying :)

@JeffAtwood: I see double of everything as well

this is a way of showing a busy feed without inserting it into the chat stream directly

me too

Ben
yes that's the one Jeff

9:13 PM
since few days

Ben
is it turn-off-able per user?

I keep getting people wander past my office asking why it sounds like the Starship Enterprise in here

have you ever worked with anything.. high tech?

@Izzy LOL. Headphones recommended :-)
@Ben If you can't get an authoritative answer I could probably give you a javascript one-liner which would solve it. As if my other JS one liner didn't land me in enough hot water, LOL...

Yep - I just cue a weak smile and get on with reading blogs
(doing work)

9:18 PM
hum
You've earned the "linux" badge.
what's that ?

Welcome back, Jeff.

I did not see it on serverfault.com/badges

No strikethrough in this limited subset of markdown?

You received 100+ upvotes in the Linux tag, radius.

@radius It's for posting good answers to the [linux] tag
@Warner Damn, beat me to it :-)

9:19 PM
did not notice that before

Oh I got a bunch of bronze tag badges, is the bronze tag badge new?

I'm affraid to have linux badge but not networking
ok nobody upvote answer on cisco question ...

@Kyle RE: IIS Shared Config. I'm 90% sure that it doesn't locally cache that information. However, I don't know how often it polls the shared config for updates. BUT... the setup-guide for Failover Clusters an IIS strongly suggested using Offline Files support for the Shared Config share.

Showed up today, Kyle.

can I see how much upvote I have for a tag somewhere ?

9:25 PM
@radius Not that I'm aware of...
someone please correct me if I'm wrong :-)

There is... on the Tag pages.
Go to the tag you want, click on the 'stats' link.

Thanks

What is light grey and dark grey?

I already saw that before, I must be tired to not remember ...

Yeah, thanks @sysadmin1138, I never knew that!
Wow, I'm the #29 Top linux Asker
@KyleBrandt In chat? dark gray is your messages

9:27 PM
There are a lot of interesting stats in there.

oh wait, nvm the #28

@Josh: In the stats for the tag

whoo I'm first for tag cisco, I'll sleep beter

@KyleBrandt Yeah I just realized I have no clue, HAHA!

Oh, mouseover shows total score and total count

9:29 PM
@KyleBrandt Thanks. I guess that makes you the #2 and me the #18 Top linux Askers?

@Josh: Yup, but more importantly, I am the #1 answer :-)
Until everyone passes me :-P

hum

@KyleBrandt Yes, better to be an answerer than an asker

serverfault.com/badges/114/unix only report @KyleBrandt while serverfault.com/tags/unix/stats show @Zoredache too

pQd and I keep on toggling back and forth as number one on the mysql tag.
I'm surprised I'm #2 on Apache, as that's #3 tag overall. Seems that tag is answered more widely than others.
(I like these stats a lot.)

that ticket you submitted, about the Num Lock key onthe keyboards

Jane Doe
OMG - have you seen my inbox????????????????????

Jane Doe
I submitted???????????????????
Oh fack

Izzy
Yes

Jane Doe
The Sun Ray number lock??????????????????

Izzy
Yes

Jane Doe
I am going to continue to submit it until you fools fix it... or take the number out of the passwords... it's killing us!!!!!!!!!

Izzy
it's an education issue - there's a big light on the keyboard that says "NUM LOCK"

Jane Doe
it's no f'n education issue....
(Sorry for the length of that - felt the need to share)

@radius I don't think C/W answers count, but I am not sure. I have a couple CW unix answers. But I am not sure...

Strange - you can't edit your own posts if you refresh the page. Bums

CW?

CW~Community wiki. But ignore what I said. According to the bottom of the stats page, they are not included in the stats either..

hum I guess I found
that stat page include question upvote
but question upvote doesn't count for the badge
ok, no... you don't have any question with tag unix

10:10 PM
Ah, that's why we don't have a politics tag, it gets removed :)

@radius, hrm.. well, the system must just not like me. It must think I already have enough badges. I think I have the most badges on SF.
