The annoying thing about typing formulas in LaTeX is that it's not WYSIWYG, you'll have to let the document compile and open it up in a PDF viewer (and scroll down to that part) to see if it was right.
In Word, if I type out \sqrt followed by a space, I get a square bracket, the \omega turns into the omega after hitting _, the (i+1) gets under the omega after hitting space, etc...
