12:00 AM
works in chrome too :/
had to do a refresh

oh right, good point lol
well then it seems the measurements should be publicly available

as in opens in Native chrome

just saw that presentation about Golden Rules @Sathya, which is exactly what my current script is suffering from: don't repeat code...

@IvoFlipse guilty

but to be honest, like I wrote on the blog I just wanted to see how far I could get without running into serious problems
well pretty far if you ask me :P

12:03 AM
@IvoFlipse haha that's true!

@IvoFlipse: For sharing purposes, just compress it... :-)

they should compress well
just numbers right ?

@IvoFlipse: I just downloaded a file full of 0.0's xD
Ah, there's some data somewhere but not much.

haha, compress them and they'll become tiny
BTW SkyDrive has a bandwidth limit @IvoFlipse

@IvoFlipse: I'm wondering, if you would store the non-zero readings together with their coordinates, you could end up much smaller I guess.

12:05 AM
but there's so much I can still do: I need to break things up in separate functions to reduce repetition, I need to automate it so it process all data without me having to manually tweak the script, it should work on all data

so best to compress it

good points
I'll cancel the current folder then :P

hehe. anyhow, I'll drop by later.

bye :)

If you store the non-zero only you could do it like this: 10,13,1.1

12:06 AM
well I'm just going to let Winrar have fun with it

row,column,value

well if I would store it like that, I should just process the data
because that's half of the work

If you're not running against limits or slow times, then it's ok.
But the coordinate way would be a lot less data and would only require a single for loop instead of nested for loops.

well after processing all the data, I need to figure out how to create databases and dump my data
apply statistics to the data with Python, I hate SPSS
create a simple GUI to load measurements, process them, store the results and view them
did I tell you I'm not a programmer?
omg hilarious, the compressed folder is 934 kb

:D

12:10 AM
I feel stupid
I'm putting them in Dropbox later on

@IvoFlipse told ya ;)
out

@IvoFlipse: Meh... Hate screenshots that don't allow you to read what's on it...
spss.com --> I clicked Learn More in the hope for screenshots, the screenshot instead turned smaller. :-(
I can choose Data Mining as an optional course next year, but I've heard that it's not that easy...

it's a statistical program, but you need to arrange data in the right way to apply statistics
if so, I'll rather program my way around it
plus the statistics I would apply are either so easy, I don't need SPSS
or so difficult that it wouldn't suffice
this is what they do with human pressure measurements
I would like to try the same with my data

Looks nice, I hope you can do the same for the dogs... :-)

well the above image is some technique they use for MRIs, which should have a python library
the lower one is what my question does, more or less
the downside of the lower option is that when you look at the right side of the heel
you clearly see an increase in pressure (warm colors)
but because the values in the middle are so large, they significantly alter the statistics and chance your results
so I want to use that MRI technique to decide whether or not an area is statistically different, not just take an average or the maximal value from a sub-region

12:17 AM
reminds me of Numeric Linear Algebra
Stability of algorithm
Or condition of the problem

well feel free to use the data for a school project ;)
this is a nice read from @Sathya's blog
don't take shortcuts, I constantly feel like I'm taking shortcuts, so I keep looking for a 'real' solution
conditioning
like with the peak detection, off course I can see the peaks in a graph myself
but I just know that if I do the obvious thing, it's going to bite me in the ass
and when it turns out it doesn't work, it might break everything I make after it
and that document reminds me to get some way of version control

@IvoFlipse: For school projects I use it for obvious team reasons
But I always tend to forget it for own projects...

what do you use?

Didn't had the need to rollback in my personal projects so far, but I can guess it will be a PITA if it occurs one or another day...
SVN for University projects
I like Git for own projects that are not University related.

aren't they using Git at StackOverflow now?
I think I installed it
but I couldn't even set up Eclipse to act like Python(X,Y)
so I just stopped trying
I want to be able to interactively mess with my code, since I often don't know what I'm doing anyway

12:27 AM
says Mercurial (hg)
but I guess it's a bit similar to Git

I should just ask for a license of Kiln
or even buy it, once I start making some money

For university I work in Eclipse (C++)

since Fogbugz comes with a great wiki and some other useful parts

But it's a pain to set up things in Eclipse. :S

why not use Visual Studio if you're using c++?

12:29 AM
For personal projects (which are in C# most of the time) I use Visual Studio.
Visual Studio's has a lack of support for C++ in comparison with C#.

isn't VS free for students?

Refactoring is way better in Eclipse, for example.
Yeah, it is. (DreamSpark)

strange I have a colleague who doesn't do anything else
perhaps I should give it another shot

And our University has the Linux-mood... :-(

it just sucks I don't have a teacher or someone who's responsible for me who I can ask to help me set it up, like you could at university
sure and they believe they can make beautiful documents with OO.org

12:31 AM
@IvoFlipse: On Windows I use TortoiseSVN, the SVN from Eclipse itself doesn't work.
On Linux I use the command-line SVN for that same reason...
@IvoFlipse: I even think that our thesis has to be done in LaTeX...

I soooo need to upgrade this computer, so I can just run Ubuntu in a VM
what is that actually
never bothered to look it up

While I think I could produce the same quality with Office.

as soon as I have to I'll buy Office myself
screw what everyone says, but I love the Ribbon
and Word owns any third party text editor

Basically, it allows you to type out a professional looking document with the most simple text editor.
That article seems to offer a good comparison of what you type and the result of it.
z \left( 1 \ +\ \sqrt{\omega_{i+1} + \zeta -\frac{x+1}{\Theta +1} y + 1} \ \right)

now I have to admit, it would help if you had such a level of control over the markup
but it's just painful

12:37 AM
would be in Word: z(1+\sqrt (\omega_(i+1) + \zeta - (x+1)/(\theta + 1) y + 1))
The annoying thing about typing formulas in LaTeX is that it's not WYSIWYG,
you'll have to let the document compile and open it up in a PDF viewer (and scroll down to that part) to see if it was right.
In Word, if I type out \sqrt followed by a space, I get a square bracket, the \omega turns into the omega after hitting _, the (i+1) gets under the omega after hitting space, etc...

on another note: did you get a notification at the top of your screen?

Yeah, seen it.

1:17 AM
woops :)

1:56 AM
lol xD

wrong alt tab

3:11 AM
big props go out to @Sathya ;)

hehe. An embarassed smiley would be apt at the removed posts by @IvoFlipse :P
@IvoFlipse aw shucks :)

yeah, I was talking to Tom in another room in Dutch
so thought I'd just remove them

@IvoFlipse ah I see
what's with the picture ?

that's what my case looks like

those cables sure could use some tying >_>

3:14 AM
Thermaltake Kandalf with built in water cooling
hehe, so could they in mine

nice

well it's due for updates
but waiting for Sandy Bridge
then nearly everything needs replacement

ah
my 3 yr old laptop requires replacement too

I have 2 6800 GSs in SLI, not really Super User-worthy
and an E6400 which has served me well, but is now long due
and I don't trust my backups to 3 year old hard drives

well my laptop has an 8600m GT
aka the electric stove

3:22 AM
hehe
time for a macbook :P

haha
@JeffAtwood thinks they aren't moving fast enough

nope, I'm still waiting for a global page where I can see all new questions for all sites I follow
and they need better ways to make some of that SO traffic flow to SE-sites

@Sathya: I really like the "How long it took for Google to get version 1.0 out?" comment. xD
Meh, 1 reputation more on NPR... Annoying. xD
Hmm, let's see if one of my questions is worth accepting.

Me to manager: 12 reports need to be completed, out of which 2 are pending from offshore and remaining 10 have been completed by me
Manager's reply: We will take 1 month to complete all 12 reports
me: ......

JNK
which means 1 month to get the last 2 from offshore?
what kind of work do you do?

no, 1 month to get all 12 done.
he didn't read my mail properly ( and not the first time its happened )

JNK
is he just speed reading or is there a language barrier or what?

@JNK I'm an Oracle Forms & PL/SQL developer, currently working on development/implementation/customization of Insurance software
@JNK both, speed reading being the dominant factor

@Sathya thats gotta be a pain

Q: Why is Thunderbird randomly moving IMAP messages to the trash?

JoshI have 4 IMAP email accounts set up in Thunderbird 3.0.5 on Ubuntu 10.04.01 LTS. These are all accounts on a server which I administer. On one particular account, seemingly randomly, thunderbird will move certain recent emails to the trash. Without being asked to. Often without me even using the ...

Time for a new email client

Ah bit you hard enough eh

It's just deleted the same f*ng message 15, no, wait, 16 times
I keep undoing and it keeps deleting
just did it again

ouch.

Yeah
Could it have something to do with NoMachine?

what's nomachine
goes to google

7:39 PM
sorry, busy killing thunderbird :-)
nomachine.org

:)

remote desktop / terminal services for Linux

why not try out evolution

I was just doing that, LOL

heard evo is slow as snail on IMAP, though.

7:41 PM
ugggg

Note: I've heard not I know

which is what I use...

meh
what's the point in having a third party process monitor if that itself chokes

Ha!
Not much :-)
OK Evolution it is.

7:58 PM
seems good ?

So far, so good!
If it exhibits the same behavior then clearly it's my IMAP server, but no other users have this issue

Hmm. Changing your client is not the best solution, but you gotta do what you gotta do

Yeah. It's better than losing emails!
Someday maybe I'll gdb or strace or something thunderbird-bin to determine what the issue was

yeah. or literally rummaging through trash :P

LOL
@Sathya I can confirm Evolution is slow using IMAP TLS, sadly...

8:08 PM
aw :(

but to be fair, it is syncing all my email
so let me let is build a local cache just to be sure

yeah

8:35 PM
randomguy getting random error messages
now if @random would close it
it becomes a related series of @random events

I left a comment. Not sure if will do any good though

I don't think its going to do much good. Lets see.

Yeah me neither
sigh Spam filter in Evolution pales in comparison to Thunderbird
I can't win! LOL...

LOL
why not Google Apps /

8:47 PM
@Sathya Maybe :-) Or maybe Zimbra...
I like having offline access but I so rarely use it
And S/MIME
Maybe I'll drop Ubuntu and try Thunderbird under a brand new VM,

@TheUnhandledException well Google has started their transition of converting Google apps into full Google account

see if that fixes my issue

my GA is now a full Google account :)

9:11 PM
@Sathya do you know much about VLANs?

@TheUnhandledException not really
what's the problem ? @TheUnhandledException

My VOIP device can't seem to connect to the internet all of a sudden. I think it's a routing issue
Looking for help in serverfault chats

ah. I suck at networking

VLAN tagged/untagged/trunk settings confuse me!

socially and electronically

9:26 PM
Looks like it was just a bad switch
And I agree @Sathya, social networking can be tricky :-)

9:38 PM

I was trying to compensate :-)

@TheUnhandledException :D thanks :)
you have 225 updates sigh

better get it done now
been putting it off because there's a kernel update stuck in

I have thunderbird open again! Am I just a masochist?

ahahahahahhaha

I like it :)

I wasn't as happy with Evolution
KMail, hm, maybe

what happened with evolution

Much Slower, UI not as nice, didn't highlight folders as I was dragging around... nitpicky stuff :-)
NoMachine NX currently supports the following applications:
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird
so it shouldn't be a NoMachine issue

Hmm
I thought NX was remote desktop app kinda thing
or am I looking at the wrong NX :?

11:40 PM
HAHA, I sent you the wrong link :-)
Kinda like VNC
Allows me to establish a remote X session on my linux system, and disconnect from it without losing running X apps
NoMachine is to X11 what screen is to an SSH session

twitter page gets a refresh
@TheUnhandledException ah I see

I'm going to try starting with a fresh thunderbird config...

did you wipe out the previous VM ?
wow.

@Sathya No, kept the VM, just mv ~/.thunderbird ~/.thunderbird-ihateyou
We'll see how it goes... :-)

@TheUnhandledException nice directory name :D

11:52 PM
thanks :-)
Anyway I'm outta here for the night. I'll catch you later @Sathya!

@TheUnhandledException bye Josh
Hope TB doesn't bother you :)
