@tripleee yeah, I shoulda spellchecked it
7:48 AM
@Luuklag k
8:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think you mean "should of" (-:
@tripleee lol good luck fixing all JMG typos! :D
It's just a unique writing style ;)
Less pedantry, more flagging!
@ShadowTheKidWizard ESL + dyslexia + thinking faster than I speak/type :D
@Luuklag kaboom
@JourneymanGeek I know! All good. ;)
tho I think one time, I was sleep deprived and didn't make any typos .
So, thinking out loud, this new project of "Stack Overflow Ambassadors" is just a marketing project aka large scale advertising? @Journeyman what you think?
I really can't find a different, real, goal there.
8:30 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard well It does seem marketing led
I actually don't mind the idea
Its got a lot of merits
@JourneymanGeek like?
hmm
Done right
It'll just cause lots of hopeful young people to join SO, and crash when they get downvotes. No?
maybe about 2-3% of people end up long term SE contributors
@ShadowTheKidWizard Marketing of course. Almost for free too, you only pay pizza.
8:32 AM
and about 10% end up okish
@Tinkeringbell never underestimate the power of free stuff. Or Pizza.
3
Yeah, you know how I think about that. I find it rather despicable to manipulate people with pizza
But with most promotional contests there was a clear goal
@Tinkeringbell only cause of the tomatos.
Here its "lets get people together to... what?
No, this is actually about a principle.
I hear a mention of an API - but what sort of tools get built?
As in 'you don't manipulate people, period.' kind of principle.
8:33 AM
@Tinkeringbell and T shirts and swag ...
Heck or shiny diamonds ;)
@JourneymanGeek pineapple! :P
So I'm very much for manipulating the impressionable for the right reasons
@JourneymanGeek Sure, they can take keep the diamond too. But at least that one wasn't an exchange for marketing.
@ShadowTheKidWizard Do you wish me pain?
@Tinkeringbell but is does have to have pineapple on it
8:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek evil grin
(I''m allergic)
Using students, using kids, to do your marketing in exchange for pizza... is just not okay to me.
@JourneymanGeek suffer for the greater cause! ;)
@Tinkeringbell well in a sense, swag is marketing
@Tinkeringbell at what age is being manipulated with swag and food ok? :D
@JourneymanGeek Never, actually.
8:36 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard when I move out and get things done, I'm probably going to do nothing but cheese and tomato pizza.
maybe some mushrooms
@JourneymanGeek I'd take swag and food any day :D
@Tinkeringbell and what would be the right way to get people aware of SE? :D
@Tinkeringbell I think you have a point, but you're putting too much into it.
@ShadowTheKidWizard Actually I understand and agree with her point to an extent
I just have looser morals over such things
They're not kids, they're adults who are well aware of what they do.
8:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek Those online ads that can be blocked with an adblocker.
@ShadowTheKidWizard I did some really dumb things as a college student :D
So I disagree there
Anyhow, the chance of SE doing it right, even after all the recent changes, is very very low.
@ShadowTheKidWizard Well yes
but if they mess it up, maybe they'll learn
I think the entire thing is mostly marketing for SO for Teams, as they get a free instance, so they get familiar with it early on and are going to nag to their future employers for one.
Ignoring important questions is a bad start, as a small example. (People asking about goal, about API usage, and more, 0 replies.)
8:39 AM
or at least I'll get popcorn the next time ;)
@Luuklag the funnel to SO for teams is... SO and SE IMO
@JourneymanGeek right now it is, but don't forget the importance of starting them young
@Luuklag and yeah that's basically it
@Luuklag they can give SO diary to school kids. ;)
@ShadowTheKidWizard hehehe
anyone wanna slap stat-review on this? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/381622/…
@Luuklag hmm? What's stat-review?
8:41 AM
So, where I am now I have 2 concerns
ohh add status review lol
what's the benefit to SE and SO
and making sure we don't have a bunch of enthusiastic newbies who are in a perfect place to be mentored crash and burn
.... which belongs in the answer
Done
As SE's wont to do, timezones and all
I woke up, had a coffee, found that question featured, and posted an answer :D
huh pity it's below -8, I need extra clicks to find it.
8:46 AM
interesting vote spread there
its controversial rather than unpopular
Or to have the request to show featured questions on homepage even when score is low implemented...
Well it actually makes sense here
I'd be more worried for those posts that were actually unpopular and piled on on
Featured content should not be hidden in any way.
8:48 AM
I mean, it makes sense not to sink this down
@JourneymanGeek wait, you did it before brushing teeth?!
:D
@ShadowTheKidWizard It isn't, it's right there at the top of the page:
@ShadowTheKidWizard after coffee. BRUSH TEETH THEN COFFEE
@Tinkeringbell yeah but it's not part of the list most people look at.
That's not hidden though.
8:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek you forgot that detail! Shame. ;)
That's just it not being in a place where you want it to be.
@Tinkeringbell hidden from the list of questions shown as default in MSE homepage.
Better? :D
@Tinkeringbell yeah, in a way. Cheese still there, but harder to find.
@ShadowTheKidWizard No, as it's just not in the list but it's still there on the page, so it isn't hidden.
@ShadowTheKidWizard its also on the right side bar
@JourneymanGeek that's what Tink keep saying, yep.
@tripleee yeah NAA at the very least
@tripleee poof
10:08 AM
Hi guys, quick question, why does highlighting Zalgo text, make the top and bottom part disappear
Because the top and bottom parts aren't really top and bottom parts.
@tripleee spam IMO, flagged.
@ShadowTheKidWizard hmm good point :P
10:29 AM
Well more seriously, the text is all in same line, what we see as "text above" and "text below" are just the quirks of the browser rendering it.
(as far as I know, never really learned about it)
@DialFrost basically "zalgo text" is stacked diacritics
unicode symbols meant to modify other letters 'abused' to look noisy
@JourneymanGeek ‮not just noise, also other fun stuff :D
try to star and see what happens ^
I think, didn't try it for a while... :P

2 hours later…
12:23 PM
What do you guys think of these edits?
@Luuklag left a comment.
As for screenshot it's not required, but won't fight over it, some people prefer to see whole screenshot rather than just a quote so it's fine.
Removing the staff tag was pure mistake though, it's a very relevant tag.
12:43 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard yeah not going into an edit war over that either
Looks like things are calm now.
And Ambassador keep getting downvotes which is pity as I have a feeling that if explained better, could even have positive score.
@ShadowTheKidWizard Well yeah, that's how votes work, don't they? But if you feel you can improve the post, go for it. That's also how SE works ;)
So the voting is not a pity, the voting is exactly doing what it's supposed to be doing to an unclear post.
1:13 PM
@Tinkeringbell the pity is the feeling it could be done better.
Ah. Well that feeling should be with the OP of a post, not others ;)
Wouldn't let it bother you too much that someone else messed up :)
I'm sympathetic. ;)
@Tinkeringbell well, also pity because it's not the OP's fault, Rosie is just the messenger.
Fair. Author then, not OP
@ShadowTheKidWizard Yeah, and I'm saying you shouldn't be having the same emotions, it's not your responsibility.
Still same, original poster of a question is the author.
Someone wrote that post the way it is, and that person is the only one that can improve it. If someone is just the messenger, they may not have written the post, only posted it.
1:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell well I'm involved by (down)voting and commenting, so have some tiny bit of responsibility about the way it's received in MSE, not the project as whole of course.
That's not... whatever.
It's not your responsibility to fix the post.
@Tinkeringbell it's common for staff to edit other staff member posts, but yeah, I get what you mean. It's not like the actual manager (might even be CEO himself) will go and post on MSE.
It is your responsibility to do with that post as appropriate, but if you're going to feel pity over that, then you might just want to stop using the site.
@Tinkeringbell nah, feeling pity over posts is rare, I usually feel just fine. :)
@ShadowTheKidWizard well he should
1:28 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard I'm not happy about downvotes but there's nothing we can do about it
@JourneymanGeek nothing we can do about others downvoting, or us downvoting because we have reason to downvote?
@ShadowTheKidWizard yes
I get votes on meta are about agreement or disagreement
@Mithical the CEO posting on MSE? Nah, it's gone with Jeff. And to be honest I'm fine with it, as long as others can post on his behalf, just need to, well, be more clear sometimes.
erf
I do wish they'd hire people who could do meta tho :D
Our current CMs will be fine eventually
But its a learning curve on its own
Shog could make the curve go upside down. :P
If SE management had some sense, they could have at least hire him as external advisor to the CM team, but alas, this train already left the station long ago.
1:43 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard even if you got good mentorship - Shog wrote as shog does
you find your own voice, but that takes time
@JourneymanGeek sure, but Shog could surely help them a lot, even behind the scenes.
@ShadowTheKidWizard Few things really
I suspect shog's quite happy where he is
and I'd really want SE to make more of an effort to hire in community... as hard as it is
My own situation aside
(actually if I gave up, I'd probably be yelling at them to do it... :D)
@JourneymanGeek they hire, fresh meat new Values Associates keep being announced, don't remember they ever hired so many. :)
oh, you mean make existing users CM's.
@ShadowTheKidWizard yup
Well that's probably not as simple as it sounds.
1:48 PM
Meh
If it was easy, they'd have done it already
2:18 PM
But there's also the willingness to make it happen
@JourneymanGeek I believe there is.
Well In which case we'll see those hires in a future round I guess
Weren't there also some in previous rounds?
I believe some other hires had also been using SE previously.
Slate, for one.
@Tinkeringbell sure - but in most cases its also folks with CM experience
and there's not that many
Buuuut
I probably am extra grumpy cause history
they're a good bunch.
@JourneymanGeek Fair enough. Still, there are CMs that used SE before becoming CMs, including recent hires :)
2:33 PM
Rosie started to reply, which is a nice turn of events. Announcement pretty much stable at ratio of 2:1 downvotes/upvotes which is fair.
@Tinkeringbell quite a few, but they weren't more active/involved than the average user.
@ShadowTheKidWizard Something about shooting the messenger ._.
@JourneymanGeek better than shooting the Sheriff! :D
@ShadowTheKidWizard Well, given how they're supposed to most of their work for average users, that's not something horrible.
@JNat Cross-site spammer stackexchange.com/users/19941109/assignment-help?tab=accounts - Currently serving a year-long suspension on Stack Overflow for promotional content, but they're spamming on WebApps now.
@Tinkeringbell not horrible at all, that's just a bonus. But, what Mr. Geek here wants is the super active members to get official promotion and become CM's. Which sounds ideal.
2:37 PM
Is it though? Who's going to be the super active member then?
@Tinkeringbell well not all of them. Most won't be able to anyway, having a job they like already.
But those who can and want, will get it, and it's win-win.
And the bit-less-active would be able to fill the gap.
@Spevacus tsk tsk
Aug 18 at 9:07, by Luuklag
@JourneymanGeek Save the guy a click and link to the accounts tab: https://stackexchange.com/users/26094448/sonia-aggarwal?tab=accounts
:D
Saving a click a day keeps the doctor away!
@Tinkeringbell Someone being both would be spectacular :D
Next time :) (Unless an extremely nice moderator wanted to change the link to stackexchange.com/users/19941109/assignment-help?tab=accounts )
@JourneymanGeek Yeah but... there are a few that are already both, so I fail to see why more?
2:42 PM
@Spevacus oh look, MODABUSE
@JourneymanGeek not feasible, it's eating the cake and leaving it whole. ;(
@Tinkeringbell why not?
@JourneymanGeek Like I said to Sha, most of the work a CM does is for regular average users anyways, so why would they need to be super active users?
@JourneymanGeek Thank ya much. You win the nicest-mod-of-the-day star. ⭐
2
@Tinkeringbell not need, want. But can't, as their time would be dedicated to other things.
2:43 PM
@Tinkeringbell because sometimes its useful to know what's going on on the ground, before people have to tell you it is ;)
@JourneymanGeek Sure, but do you need to be super active for that, or is that something you can do as an average user?
@Tinkeringbell Well, I do what I can as an average user
and, another question hits the dust... (fell to -8 and below)
@JourneymanGeek you're not average user though.
@ShadowTheKidWizard the stuff I do's learnable
upvotes in spite
2:45 PM
Just that I've had longer to learn it
@Spevacus Contacts CM for reversal of wrong votes.
You're in the "Can't Be More Active Than That" users range, @Journeyman ;)
@Tinkeringbell Reports mean-mod-of-the-day for aboos
abyooze? I dunno.
2:46 PM
@Spevacus Has a full paper trail of actions, is not worried.
@ShadowTheKidWizard Actually its less about activity than knowing the spaces I'm in well
@Tinkeringbell Starts passing out pitchforks and torches to the denizens of Meta
@Spevacus Hands out some downvotes to other denizens.
Well this was anticlimactic. Which I guess is Meta in a nutshell.
@JourneymanGeek you're always around. Almost 24/7. You do anything. So, activity plays major role. Knowing what you do is nice bonus for that. :D
2:49 PM
lol
@Spevacus ohh, so it's your version of @Tink's "fed". ;)
I'm around randomly cause my job's wierd :D
Former job :D
@JourneymanGeek huh? You quit? No job these days?
2:50 PM
One crazy roster too many
This explains how you're even more active, yeah. :D
pay was not that good
naw, last working day was yesterday
@JourneymanGeek oh lol
I hand my laptop over tommorrow
But also, when you know it's the end, you don't really want to spend time there.
2:51 PM
Pay wasn't good, long shifts that left you tired, iirc? Glad you're done with it. Any current plans or are you searching for the next big thing?
But I think there's more to it than activity
@Spevacus the latter
Well then I wish you luck :)
Actually the plan had been to stick around until I got the SE thing sorted
@Spevacus we should all wish him to fulfil his dream and become CM.
hmm
Then it was to save for my apartment
2:52 PM
Maybe.... nah...
which I did ;D
only
its delayed to next august
Darn.
SO taking a break, upskilling, seeing if I can find something less nutty
lose a little weight too. ._.
@Journeyman the brick wall with getting hired is only your location, or are there more factors in play?
@ShadowTheKidWizard at this point? Location
But frankly I'm not sure
Guess relocation isn't an option?
The longer he spends there (in a location outside of where SE can hire), the quicker the current positions get filled, though, it seems.
I just bought an apartment
@Spevacus it seems they create new positions every few months, so I'm not worried. ;)
@JourneymanGeek nice!
2:54 PM
So for now, I guess I'll do what I can for my 3 communities, and look elsewhere
and maybe I'll find a job that's awesome and I'll be like "ehhh, they took too long" :D
@JourneymanGeek that's same with relationships, you know.
@ShadowTheKidWizard more specifically, I can pay the whole thing off, and the basics ;)
So.... maybe two birds in one hit....
@ShadowTheKidWizard sure, but the right job and I probably am in a better place for matchmaking too
@JourneymanGeek I mean marry with your next boss. :D
2:56 PM
lol
We'll see
Hey, it happens.
In soap opera and movies. :D
But I really wish you the best of luck to find a good job, and not too early, you need to rest a bit. @Journeyman
lol
Life is a lot more boring
and sometimes wierder ;)
@Spevacus Well, they got funding, which I'm happy about
Yeah, the size of the team is looking fairly healthy. Though I imagine they still wish it were a bit bigger, given the scope of the stuff they've been up to lately.
@Spevacus I think partially its needing to train people
partially - well, they need to steal attract folks with experience
3:01 PM
Onboarding is quite likely a bear of a task for them. Existing members (ex-moderators like V2Blast and Slate, and previous-members like Vanny) likely have it a bit easier getting a handle on things, but there's likely a lot more involved than I can picture from my current frame of reference.
@Spevacus well there's 'CMing'
and there's "dealing with this community"
Both are acquired skills
@Spevacus yup
3:29 PM
Probably the spam trigger with most fp's. (Link at end of body.)
But still some tp's so better keep it.
3:41 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Why hit birds?!
@Spevacus eugh. Yuck. I need to wash my eyes.
@ShadowTheKidWizard people editing posts to make things better...
@Tinkeringbell lower the chances of cleaning bird poop from one's car, therefore reducing the water and energy required for cleaning, and saving the planet.
basically system as designed? :D
It's a small sacrifice.
3:43 PM
@M.A.R. I think if you hit birds, they will shit on your car intentionally
There are no winners in war
now the trick is to make someone elses car more attractive to bombing
@Tinkeringbell hit in a good sense. runs away anyway
:D
@JourneymanGeek that's right. What about it? ;)
@M.A.R. actually I assume hitting a bird would make it poop, so you're wrong. :D
@Tinkeringbell exactly!
@JourneymanGeek make it look like a tree. Or whatever birds are used to poop on? ;)
And with that, going home. Cya!
The other day one shat on my wrist which is why I'm waging a war against them
And it didn't look like a tree
@M.A.R. nah that was out of love.
3:49 PM
Ew I'm not into that stuff
How else would birds express their love for someone?
By respecting consent
not pecking out your eyes?
@ShadowTheKidWizard pebbles
@Tinkeringbell ravens might do it, other birds aren't strong/smart enough
3:56 PM
@Tinkeringbell This is actually true for crows. Crows are apparently as intelligent as a 7 year old, can hold grudges if you do something they deem to be offensive, and will communicate with other crows to also hold that grudge against you.
So, in other words, don't piss off your local crows.
4:35 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard I think the pebbles thing is actually penguins

1 hour later…
5:50 PM
@Spevacus Crows are scary smart
6:04 PM
@Spevacus like taking away their babies? ;)
@Tinkeringbell huh!
@M.A.R. I consent to not respect.
@g3rv4 bonfire ping, by your request! How are you? How's the week going?
hmm who else? Oh, I know!
But let's make it special.
Now let's find it...
@Bart I'm still waiting.
hehehe
@V2Blast what's the difference between a crow and a raven? Too lazy to just Google it... ;)
Also, which of those got to be featured in the movie by Hitchcock?
"still up" report in 3... 2... 1...
hmm that's a surprise. So, let there be coffee instead! :P
!!/coffee trip
@ShadowTheKidWizard brews a cup of ristretto for @trip
!!/google crow vs. raven
@ShadowTheKidWizard No such command 'google'.
:(
Fun fact: the only letters without any pingable users starting with them are: z, x, n, h, k, q, y, i, and o.
Let's shuffle them then.
in Shadow's Den, 10 secs ago, by FOX 9000
@ShadowTheKidWizard i o n h k q x y z
Shadow out. </dinner>
6:27 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Different species, same genus, I think? They're both corvids, anyway
...Yep, looks like both terms refer to members of the genus Corvus; ravens generally refer to larger species within the genus.
A raven is any of several larger-bodied bird species of the genus Corvus. These species do not form a single taxonomic group within the genus. There is no consistent distinction between "crows" and "ravens", and these appellations have been assigned to different species chiefly on the basis of their size. The largest raven species are the common raven and the thick-billed raven. == Etymology == The term "raven" originally referred to the common raven (Corvus corax), the type species of the genus Corvus, which has a larger distribution than any other species of Corvus, ranging over much of...

o/
\o how's life today?
busy
The oldest got swim practice, needed to pick up a bike from the bikeshop, etc. etc.
So now I'm back at work at half past 9
And how's life treating you @Tinkeringbell?
My favourite song about crows is The Twa Corbies. If you're not Scottish, it might be a wee bit hard to understand. ;) But there's a brief translation at the end.
7:54 PM
@Luuklag It's okay. Temperatures are a lot better so I suddenly have this burst of energy to clean everything in the evenings/early mornings. Started throwing a bunch of stuff out, and sorting a whole lot of other junk into boxes
I'll see how long it lasts, hopefully I get everything done before I start thinking about something else to do.
@Tinkeringbell Sounds like the wrong season to do these things
But yeah, talking about boxes, were living 5 years in this house already, and still have some boxes that never got unpacked
@sha you broke the starboard? i.sstatic.net/DncXo.png
mmm alwyas nice to get 3 random upvotes because someone decided to bump an old question where I have an answer
@Luuklag Yeah, it was rather stupid of me to plan most of that for the summer vacation XD I'll try again around Christmas, at least for the cleaning. Having everything sorted and in boxes will help by then though
@Luuklag Everything is unpacked here... It's just that most of my craft stuff was in all different sorts of boxes and I'm now sorting it into other boxes of more uniform size and shape XD
Also I gathered an amazing amount of tools and spare parts, and manuals. Sorting through those too :P
I had some kitchen stuff from back when I was uni. Threw some stuff out, as I hadn't used it for nine months now
@Tinkeringbell Yeah we had that too, we bought an ikea cabinet that has all these boxes that slide into it
really usefull
Same with some other unpacked stuff. It had just been laying around, so now it's gone :P
@Luuklag I had those wooden thingies from IKEA with three small drawers in each. But I no longer have room to properly place those so all the drawers are accessible. So now I have Samla boxes ;)
@Tinkeringbell We have a kallax, with dröna boxes in them. Really great thing. It has like 25 boxes, and also double like a seperator wall
8:09 PM
Yeah, I've seen those. They're awesome if you have space for them :D
Toyed with the idea of getting one as a separator wall directly behind the couch for a while, but there's not enough space
8:24 PM
@Tinkeringbell I have it in the attic, deviding my office from the pile of junk boxes
@Luuklag No attics here. Probably a good thing or it would be full of stuff I now threw out :P
8:43 PM
@Tinkeringbell I've kept a few boxes of my study books. Their just gorgeous looking books, a shame to throw them out.
On the other hand I never use them.
9:09 PM
@Luuklag my study books are on my bookshelf. They were too expensive to throw out, and yes, some of them have gorgeous images :)
I don't have a place for a bookshelf, unfortunately
You could get rid of the kallax :P
I don't have a kallax because I have a bookshelf :P
9:45 PM
mmm 30 more rep till I max out today, probably not going to make it anyways

2 hours later…
11:47 PM
hmm
@ShadowTheKidWizard - now that Rosie's answered, does it feel sufficient to reverse the downvote? :D
