As much as people here want to help - its very much an issue that community and the CMs need to sort out, without parachuting in mods, or soliciting votes. As mods, a lot of the time, we do need the moral high ground, and that means not doing the 'wrong' things for the right reasons.

@JourneymanGeek, As best I can determine the "First Answers" queue was created 10 years ago, yet the Freelancing site's First Answers queue has had only a few reviews in several years, the "First Questions" queue has 2 reviews completed.
A couple of hundred people have done one review, there are three people with a Reviewer badge and none with a Steward badge - yet there are 20,824 users.

@Rob Well - I'm not talking at all about ticking off the checkmarks for candidate points
I'm talking about 'generally being there'

Rob
97% answered is great, and the number of users good enough, but at 0.4 questions per day (was 0.1 a week ago, so I guess that's an improvement) it's slow going.
A couple of hundred people are showing up as regular visitors in the A51 stats.
People just don't see the need to help as a user, and the moderator hasn't rallied the troops until the last minute; and regular users have pleaded more frequently.

Which isn't atypical of smaller sites
The moderator's probably burnt out
and well - yeah, that's kinda the 'bigger picture' that needs fixing IMO

Rob
It's not a problem that will be fixed in a few years, having taken half a dozen years to decay to this state.

Its also not a problem that's fixed cause we put folks in there 'to fill the void'
No matter how good they are

Rob
4:17 AM
True. The pointy stick is only useful for Shish Kebab, once it's too late.

I think it generally took me 3-5 years of activity before I was comfortable modding a site. Getting folks in might take the heat off for a bit - but you're essentially working with none of the 'social' knowledge a regular on the site would have
And in this case particularly, cause I seriously know the feeling, I think it would be a waste if snow left again over that

Rob
The principle behind Freelancing (not the site, the occupation) is that everything is billable, anything not billable either isn't done or it's a favor; and takes time from work that can be billed for. - So do the minimum.

Well - I've moderated 3 sites over the years (Stepped down on Software recs cause I found I had nothing to do), stood for and lost... 3? elections, and considered and didn't stand for one (while being a MSE and SU mod). Its always been a 3-4 year period of being familiar with the community, then occationally starting again.
Moderation to some extent is a time and energy sink, and one you start before
So once again, not a reflection on the folks who wanted to step up but...
It seems like patience would be useful, and basically doing the groundwork before stuff got... uh... desperate?

Rob
I've done freelancing, worked as an employee at huge and tiny places, in more than 3 occupations - so I get some of the dynamics of big corp and sole proprietorship, highly skilled and unskilled, genius and not.

Cool- go work at the 300 rep, and stand for an election. (Its 300 right? I've not actually stood in an election in years)

Rob
4:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek I could have (should have) done more groundwork before volunteering, but we (the two who offered months ago) were willing to stick with it - after we were formally rejected, by asking if that was the case (oh yeah, you're out), we were able to reflect on the fact that the moderator never commented "Thanks guys, for stepping up to help", but now the hangman has the gallows ready and the noose knotted the moderator is only too happy to thoroughly welcome a last minute entry.

@DeletedProfile if your suspension was issued by a CM then I agree, and would do the same as it means SE itself, the company, acted against you personally, and showed 0 flexibility while it should have. But, if it was just ordinary site mod then please, don't let a single mod who might just be clueless about the situation take away excellent asset to SE. Oh, and a great person. :)
But anyway, yeah, this totally should make us stop trying to help them, regardless of who did it.
So, to sum it up nicely....

Oh my, where are my manners?! Welcome to the Tavern, @SpencerG :)
You're the silent partner of @V2Blast (well you two were hired together ;)), luckily your name isn't Bob. :D
going back to the shadows work

7:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek So is that something that can be fixed, or may I remove that feed as it's not useful :)

7:45 AM
@Tinkeringbell Well, its primarily a human problem
it should resolve itself in 6-8 weeks
If it is constantly wrong/late in future maybe

Okay
I'll give it one more chance.

Oh no think I scared Spencer away... cries

Well if they're scared that easily... XD

I was about to ask about that until I read the scrollback

Hey Tink is alive xD
already moved to your new place?

"From a certain point of view"

8:18 AM
@Luuklag Semi :P This is the second day in a row that I'll spend working from there. Saturday we're going to move over the desk and proper PC and from then on I'll also be spending the nights here.
For now, it's working from the kitchen table without an extra screen, which ... sucks XD

Priorities, Priorities

@Tinkeringbell hey were in the same boat then
I had to return my screen to the office on monday

Ugh.
I have my own, for that reason :P Don't want to have to return any of them when I switch jobs XD

And we got to choose what we would like as a set-up for working from home, so I choose a monitor obviously. But guess what, they still have to order those :/

user960635
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 It was a CM. Luke (the mod on freelancing.SE) was fine about me nominating myself and was pretty thankful. I think everyone here understood I had no malicious intent in trying to gain rep to get into the election and I don't believe that anyone in this room would help me if I were malicious in nature. The note really reminded me of how Monica was canned, the note I was sent had the same tone to it.

8:29 AM
@Luuklag Ah, and that's of course going to take 6-8

@DeletedProfile Ouch, Good thing Rob diverted the bounty I tried to push on him then :/
@Tinkeringbell I hope not, but I'll be working more from the office I guess, it's only a 10min bike ride from home

@Luuklag Good luck. We're still just going one day a week, and half of those days I find we don't really need to be there because there aren't any meetings like retrospective or something.

@Tinkeringbell Yeah they want us to be in one day a week here as well. But yesterday I was in as well, and there were 4 people in the entire office, that pre-covid housed about 25-30 people

@DeletedProfile It's hard. Voting rings aren't okay on SE, even if they're the most well-intentioned things in the world. And what happened was kinda like a voting ring to get you into that election :/ I'm sorry to hear this is pushing you to leave (again), but I also think there's little anyone can do to change what happened (except warning you earlier, but I sadly missed out on most of the happenings due to being busy, or I would've tried!)
3

@DeletedProfile sorry to hear then.... and sorry for SE for still being bullies towards certain people, despite their best efforts to improve.
@Tinkeringbell still, it's not random spammer.
It's a well known member, so yeah it's just like Monica.

8:37 AM
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Doesn't really matter? Well known members can make mistakes too.

No matter how bad the crime is, such person deserves better treatment.

Ah yes, class justice :P

@Tinkeringbell sure, and should pay, but there's a way to communicate this.

Listen, I don't know what message was sent, and I honestly don't need to know. That there's hard feelings about it I'll take for granted... But there's only so many ways you can sugercoat things.

I think a week's suspension is pretty mild for a voting ring....

8:43 AM
@Luuklag It's also a year's exclusion from any future nomination attempt. In any case, that's for someone else to sort out. I was ok during my year away, my mental health improved considerably (the Monica situation affected me more than any internet community has a right to), so I'll be fine in walking away from this.

@DeletedProfile Were you planning on running in any other elections? :)

user960635
I was planning on supporting the community as much as I could. I could have simply demanded my diamond back, but I didn't want to go down that route.

Well, 'as much as you can'.... can still be as a regular member ;)

@DeletedProfile I did quit during the Monica Crisis, and almost walked away once or twice after
You can do as much good as a regular user and community member as a mod

For the more practical advice... if you haven't yet replied to your mod-message, it might be good to do so. If you can point out which parts of the message make you feel this bad, a CM might at least learn something from this all.

user960635
8:59 AM
@Tinkeringbell I think by now, the CMs should really know this.

@DeletedProfile tbh ?
Not really
No offense but I think a good chunk of the team is either new to the community, or doing things here.
so giving them a little benefit of the doubt would be nice

What Geek said. :)
That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking too

and god I know writing nuanced mod messages is a pain in the arse. So if something's not right feeding back if good.
*is

user960635
There's still only one CM who handles elections as far as I know. Unless all CMs get involved in how they run. This one knew of my past as a mod of TWP.

@DeletedProfile don't think so, it is the ops team in general

user960635
9:08 AM
My reply to the CM letter was short and terse. I think the real feedback here here in this room. I guess that a CM might notice it, if they follow.

user960635
@JNat ^^^ discussion above relating to the feedback on my being removed as a nomination for freelancing.SE. I'm sure you're aware that my intent wasn't malicious in nature, but that's how it seems to have been taken. I'm not arguing this one (I did ask for help in getting the rep after all), but I was assuming that "assume good intent" might still be a thing. I didn't hide the fact I was trying to help the site, people here tried to help with the same good intent.

@DeletedProfile also, FWIW - the reason I stuck around as a mod was that its precisely when the company messes up, or lacks heart or ... yanno... needs a sharp bite to the ankles, is the time when folks need to step up
the situation on Freelancing is messy and there's lots of misteps

user960635
THB I wish I (and probably others) had known about the situation on freelancing a lot earlier. It wouldn't have been a last-ditch effort. There are probably other sites equally struggling.

@DeletedProfile I've voiced this out during a past CM/mod meetings

9:30 AM
I should note that under the previous system of pro-tem nominations on meta sites, users with under 300 rep were allowed to nominate and potentially be selected as mods. I imagine that when the new system of pro-tem elections was introduced, there must have been some internal discussion about the new 300-rep requirement it introduced, and given the current hardline stance about it, they probably have discussed about it and have a good reason for it.
(As a matter of fact, until very recently, the requirement wasn't enforced server-side, only client-side, so someone could have nominated in one of its prior failed elections even without 300 rep - but that hole has been plugged.)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I don't think the rep requirement was up for discussion here. I think it makes perfect sense to have a barrier to entry in these elections, to prevent literally anyone from running, and winning by absence of another candidate.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog though those sites hard hardly any 'history' at those times
@Luuklag ah, I also wonder if that was due to a certain... rather famous user standing in all the elections...
(which some say is also why we stopped getting swag standing in an election as opposed to winning it)

@JourneymanGeek That is not something I'm aware off...

@Luuklag uh, rather not name the user for the risk of summoning said user
and we don't get along.

@JourneymanGeek still doesn't ring a bell, so be it ;)

9:36 AM
Before your time :D
less... controverially
in the election I won, one candidate used a picture of a camgirl as their ava, then said you should vote for them because "I am cute"

Oh yeah, great argument. Like you need cute mods.

only if they're dogs.

Dogs are by definition uncute, with their hairs and slobbering.

Its cute slobbering

Maybe they're like babies... Only cute if they're someone else's and you can get rid of them as soon as they start making a mess.
But no, slobbering isn't cute.

9:56 AM
well i had one for 15 years
I'd get another one if I could

I know, you're crazy :P
I thought a bit more about getting the rabbits and I think I will pass. I don't think I will have the discipline to love them.

10:10 AM
@Tinkeringbell You might want to start with something less demanding ;) Also rabbits require quite a lot of excersise, so their not that great as indoor pets, unless they are free-roaming, which requires you to be quite experienced in handling them I think.

My brother had a rabbit. It was fun, but then I never had to clean the cage XD
(We let it roam free in our backyard, and when my parents were on vacation, I was tasked with feeding it)

@DeletedProfile As the mod message indicated, we actually did assume your intentions were good. The prospect of having to close down the site does not give the CM team absolutely any pleasure, and it is in fact the least favorable outcome for all parties involved. As we also noted, though, the ends do not justify the means: the site cannot be built in a healthy way upon a prospective moderation team that engaged in misconduct in order to save it. The decision was not taken lightly.

@JNat in the posts on that site's meta there is also some discussion regarding this matter. You might want to see if a response is warranted there as well.

will do, thanks

@Luuklag someone in my neighbourhood used to let their rabbits run around the grass under my apartment building when there were no dogs around. twas adorable

10:26 AM
@Aibobot Untill a falcon flew by?

naw

@Luuklag yeah, I saw it — I got an inbox notification about it too (there's a comment on the question too)

Well then my job is done ;)

10:41 AM
someone is wasting spam on SoftwareRecs.SE?

Apparently. And wasting my time sorting through all that to catch them.
Found 11 answers in total promoting their stuff there.
Oh, and some plagiarism on Video Production. They really pulled out all the stops to make their spam look legit.
All of which took waaaaaaaaay more time than I was planning on spending on handling the initial spam post that made me look into it.

10:57 AM
Heh, I know the feeling. Similar for mods hunting branching socks :p

I wonder if there are any site mods unaware of Charcoal wondering who the heck these people are that never post on the site but occasionally drop in with flags describing elaborate spam networks.

lol
I think by now, no
unless they live in a well

I think we sometimes still say 'hey, there's Charcoal and SmokeDetector'. Especially to new mods :)
I don't think I remember any complaints about people flagging stuff though :P

I wouldn't expect complaints, just puzzlement

None of that either ;)

11:08 AM
@RyanM Yeah took quite some of my flags there, hope I don't run out today ;)

It came to pass, that all was restored, in the Hanthawaddy Kingdom:

12:14 PM
@Luuklag Used all of mine :-)
3 custom flags (+1 more retracted to add more info), 8 spam (1 helpful so far)

maybe it's old news, but last seen is back with I guess an accuracy of 1 week

@ymb1 it's relatively new! 16 hours ago

How to write this ?

@Tinkeringbell Thanks :-)

@Wolgwang technically feminine equivilent of that.

Preferably neither though XD We're not family at all.

12:46 PM
THANK YOU FEMALE PERSON

You're welcome, weird dog.
(BTW if I feel my gender needs correcting online... I will do so myself :P)
Cause I'm a strong independent emancipated female person and all that

well the joke being no one would ever call someone <gender> PERSON :D
well that too
but I'm constitutionally opposed to the term bruh

@JourneymanGeek I don't mind that, but I'm not some tool to fight those battles with :)

I have a emotional support wrench for that, true

Go give that a hug then ;)

Rob
12:51 PM
@Spe, funny thing is, my Candidate Score is higher than his (which says something):

also useful as a small vice, slightly expensive bashy tool, and a wrench

@Rob I'm just happy someone stepped up.

Rob
True, it was not our hill.

It shouldn't have had to be, in an ideal world. I'm saddened that I was involved in something that led to Snow catching a suspension and a forced withdrawal. Like JMG said though... A squad of candidates pushed upwards non-organically doesn't speak well to the health of the site.
I dunno. I won't push the convo further, it's fairly exhausted.

1:01 PM
That said, I'm still contributing there, and should I get the rep necessary to nominate and a second candidate hasn't presented themselves, I'll probably self-nominate. One extra mod isn't going to immediately give Canadian Luke relief.
(Obligatory: That was NOT an invitation for anyone to go and vote on my posts)

@Spevacus haha @JNat just so you know ;)

Pls no

@Spevacus when I was new on SE, I basically followed the new posts RSS feeds and tried to post an answer a day.....
Its a marathon, not a sprint ;)

Mhmm :)

also get to know the community and the folks there if you haven't already
(cause I literally know nothing about freelancing :D )

1:05 PM
Well, there are a couple of folks who show up semi-often and maybe post an answer. One of them (who has a VERY large network-wide footprint) participates on Meta, but on their accounts they're not permitted to self-nominate (I don't know the circumstances surrounding that). The ones I've interacted with are cool people and give decent feedback on my answers (in now-deleted comments).

@JourneymanGeek Now that is cute :P

@Tinkeringbell they have a tiny one too and a giant one

Are you starting a collection? :P

I'm getting the bigger one next year... the ESW has been wierdly useful for a "Its cool, and I like the guy's channel, so might as well support him) buy...
well, no, uh yes...
more that its useful :D

Rob
smells - Yes, flags age away there, yet supporting comments get deleted.

1:11 PM
@Spevacus assuming its who I think it is - there's a bit of history, and probably some dirty laundry we're better off not discussing here

It's probably who you think it is. And fair enough :)

in which case, I'd say its justifiable

Rob
They hid their profile elsewhere (where they have 574,031 reputation) from the rest of the network.

1:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek Eh? Am I missing some context?

@Wolgwang hm Yes

🥲

(read the rest of the conversation after that)

Has anybody missed me?
I doubt it very much, but just in case: I'm around again.

welcome stranger

1:52 PM
Welcome back!

@ColeValleyGirl We just didn't know what we were missing ;) How's things, iirc you moved places?

A Sudden Cardiac Arrest puts a bit of a crimp in things, I can report. However, if you're going to have one, have it in a hospital bed in conversation with a cardiology consultant and a senior cardiac nurse, and have a bit of a dress rehearsal so that the crash team is also at your bedside then it happens for real.
So, not moving (not allowed to drive for at least 6 months, maybe two years).

XD Yeah, you definitely timed that one then XD
Oof :( That sucks.
There's rules for that?! I didn't know!

If you heart stops while you're driving, it isn't good for anyone on the road around you. Ditto if your Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator gives you a shock. I wouldn't feel comfortable if I was allowed to drive.
At least I now have a spot on the heart transplant waiting list -- it was going to happen in the next six months anyway but this focussed minds.

I wouldn't feel comfortable if you were either. I just didn't know there were rules, it makes sense to have them though. A quick google search shows there's at least 'guidelines' over here, there's probably also a rule or two in there somewhere.
@ColeValleyGirl Fingers crossed you'll make it soon!

1:59 PM
@ColeValleyGirl Good to hear you dodged that bullet then

Meanwhile life is all sorts of hassle -- organising getting to places without a car when you live in a village without a bus service is a whole lot of fun, for certain values of the word fun.
@Luuklag Survival rate in hospital (survival to discharge) 25%. Survival chance if it had happened while I was alone at home? Zero. A bullet definitely dodged.

@ColeValleyGirl as far as good timing goes.... That's as close as it gets

Time for the weird questions! Was it like a near-death thing, or not? If so, what does the afterlife look like? :D

@JourneymanGeek I'm just unbelievably talented...
@Tinkeringbell Well, I was technically not dead at all, just didn't have circulation for a short time until they shocked me. But no tunnels of light or visions of the afterlife. When I came round 5 hours later, I had memories of weird dreams about arguing with doctors about them doing stuff without taking the time to explain it to me...
When the nurse popped her head into my room as she was going home, to say she was glad to see me sitting up and laughing, I asked if I'd been particularly stroppy. She paused a moment and then said: we don't often get asked to explain things by the patient at that stage of proceedings!

@ColeValleyGirl XD That's a good one! Thanks for satisfying my slightly weird curiosity ;)
So, were you really asking them to explain things?

2:07 PM
It would appear so :)

More importantly... did you get answers :P

Also on a positive note, I got two fun rides in ambulances on lights and sirens going flat out. One taking me into the hospital after I'd called 999 because stuff was getting weird, and one when I was transferred to the hospital where the heart transplant assessment took place. (That one wasn't an emergency, but the ambulance crew wanted to go flat out down the M5 just for fun_).
@Tinkeringbell Not at the time, as far as I remember. Afterwards, a very helpful nurse took me through the records of what happened. Oddly enough, I would have given consent for all of it if they'd asked at the time.

O.o
Are they allowed to do the latter? I would think that kinda puts other drivers at unnecessary risk?

They would have argued that they needed to get me to the 2nd hospital 75 miles away before 10 o'clock at night, and they didn't want to have to turn around and take me back. That time of night, the M5 is pretty clear...

Heh. I don't know the M5 (or rather, the traffic there, I know it's a highway because I heard the name before, probably on TV).
I guess on TV, there's always plenty of traffic otherwise the high speed car chase isn't fun, or the daily commute frustration unexplainable :P

2:16 PM
@Tinkeringbell Here we also have plenty of highways that are near empty at that time of night.
Esepcially more to the east, I know I've clocked over 160 once in my car

Well sure :P But them being empty is no reason to go way over the speed limit! :P
Also... I don't remember highways being all that empty before 10PM here, but okay.

@Tinkeringbell well depends where you are at ;)
In 2 weeks I have a nice oppertunity to test this again. I have an evening meeting in the north of Friesland. So a 2+ H drive home after that

@Luuklag Near Zwolle, usually
But Friesland may well be more empty ;)

2:32 PM
@Tinkeringbell yeah quite likely

2:56 PM
..... that m5?

@JourneymanGeek M5 not M25. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M5_motorway The M25 circles London and was obviously designed by the agents of Hell.

@ColeValleyGirl Being only very slightly anything near british (I lived there for 2 years!) its a natural mistake to make

I agree -- our entire motorway system was probably designed by the agents of Hell, to be honest.

Maybe if you start using it like it's supposed to? By driving on the right side of the road? :P

Rob
The M5 is a motorway in England linking the Midlands with the South West. It runs from junction 8 of the M6 at West Bromwich near Birmingham to Exeter in Devon. Heading south-west, the M5 runs east of West Bromwich and west of Birmingham through Sandwell Valley. It continues past Bromsgrove (and from Birmingham and Bromsgrove is part of the Birmingham Motorway Box), Droitwich Spa, Worcester, Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, Bridgwater, Taunton, terminating at junction 31 for Exeter. Congestion on the section south of the M4 is common during the summer holidays, on...

3:10 PM
@Tinkeringbell We do drive on the right side of the road. It's everybody else that drives on the wrong side.

@ColeValleyGirl Ah, that explains why I nearly got myself killed visiting London then :P

Rob
Libya is well ahead of everywhere for accidents: worldatlas.com/articles/…

I have always refused to drive in London. Also, when abroad.

Oh, I wasn't even driving, this was from before I was even eligible for a driver's license :P
Crossing the street, and forgot to look the other way.

3:15 PM
That would do it.

is the applicable here? Its excerpt and wiki suggest it's not; 1) can someone add proper usage to the excerpt depending on the answer 2) do we need a new tag (me thinks so)?

meh

@ymb1 No. But I also don't think "last seen" is distinctive enough to warrant its own tag, its part of the profile, and an appropriate tag for that seems better to me

3:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek thanks; I suggested an edit

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 I admittedly did not notice the ping. Thank you for the welcome though.

@Marijn No, last seen doesn't mean "logged in". It means "interacted with the site". That's how the system feature is designed, since before the profile changes too. — TylerH 11 mins ago
@TylerH: I'm sure it wasn't about interacting
a simple refresh after a certain time would have updated it to Last seen now

@Braiam I agree

I'm annoyed we still do DLST. Idk why it's lasted this long without a purpose beyond being annoying.

@Luuklag Because meme and onebox never appear on the same post.

I am lucky to live in one of the rare places in the US that do not practice DLST. It's great except for having to remember what time it is other places around this time of year.

@Luuklag Oooh. You should totally post an answer there. I think we've memed about it enough for a post there.

@Spevacus iirc it’s been coming up more often in the news, which might draw attention, which might lead too it getting changed? (Or maybe I’m just going off of a slipperly slipe, idk)

@Spevacus It seems as though it was a reluctant step, visiting their profile I see that they were on the main site 3 hours ago, but the meta site says: "Last seen 26/10/2021, (1 week ago)".

@Valorum - @Valorum, it's all over the place as to whether there will be more people. The real problem is that it has been discussed in The Tavern, and more time / concern than anywhere else has been spent (months of it coming up weekly), that it's been over-discussed; and over and done with. That said it could easily resurface, if people were more interested than us (in The Tavern) and a smaller number of people here.

If I'm experiencing an "Oops! Something bad happened!" error when visiting my profile on a specific site, but don't experience that problem on other sites, should I post about the problem on that site's meta or on Meta SE?
I suspect that I know why it's happening but obviously, not a dev, can't determine that.

hmm
on SO, i'd probably do mso, but elsewhere? iunno whether or not the userbase on other meta's would be able to respond to that.
if it's something in need of an SE dev, i'd assume mse would be best

Yeah visibility's my concern here.

@Feeds brings back the memories of trying to understand colormaps in matplotlib. It began poorly with cmaps['Perceptually Uniform Sequential'] = ['viridis', 'plasma', 'inferno', 'magma', 'cividis'] and went downhill from there.

Plasma, magma, or inferno, what's your pleasure?
