12:43 AM
@amWhy I was not pingable any more and thus did not see this. I learned that you are suepended in chat five minutes ago in a weird way. I don't even yet know why you were chat suspended.
Anyway sorry for the delay in responding, but I did not get all those pings.

1:02 AM
@BabaYaga I really don't like that actually.
@amWhy What if I reply somewhere where you cannot see it? If somebody replies and no one can see it, is it a reply?
@amWhy Counterexample: I still don't know why you got suspended in chat.
Not sure if you can find that funny right now, but it's true!

9 hours later…
10:20 AM
@quid no offence but neither do i

11:12 AM
@quid Sorry about that, @quid! I should have noticed the non-autocomplete when typing your username.

12:06 PM
@amWhy hello, how's your day been so far?

9 hours later…
8:41 PM
@quid, if you stop in here anytime in the next few hours, ping me, if you'd like. But I understand you seem to have had a very busy day.

Seems i missed him too from a couple of hours :O

Hello, @NordineLotfi

Do you like squid by any chance? @quid
@amWhy Hi!
it's totally not because your nick just miss an s for it to look like that ;)

@NordineLotfi I'll pass on squid. But I like @quid. You might also recognize "quid pro quo".

@amWhy oh, so that's where this come from

8:47 PM
@NordineLotfi Who knows? Actually, searching for a translation from Latin to English of "quid" See: google.com/…
how many?

Translations of quid:
adverb
why
cur, quare, quid, quod, quis, qui
for what
quid, quis, quorsum, quorsus, quapropter
how many
quot, quam multi, quantum, quis, quid

@amWhy Interesting :O
@amWhy So a similar one could be What do you mean what do i mean or I know what you mean; you mean "i don't know what you mean"

@quid I guess we must be related, since one meaning of your username is why!!

@amWhy this is puntastic

@amWhy is a sockpuppet for @quid?!

@XanderHenderson Shhhhhhhh!
@NordineLotfi That's a fun word. I've never encountered it until your post!!
How goes it, @Xander?

8:54 PM
@amWhy I'm exhausted. You?
On the bright side, I have no more teaching obligations in California.

@amWhy I known it from a cartoon i recall, can't remember the name though :/
@XanderHenderson what happened? (if you don't mind me asking)

@NordineLotfi Oh, I got a job in Arizona. But I had a contract to teach a summer class in Cali.
So I've spent the last three weeks teaching classes in two different states at the same time.

@XanderHenderson Yes, very much exhausted! My University has me teaching a linear algrebra course on line, but for grad students, I attend a seminar course in group theory with ten students. I'm out of practice teaching in a classroom!

@amWhy Fun.

@XanderHenderson I'm also part of a committee organizing online tutoring for the Math Lab (traditionally always done on campus, but given COVID, we recruited tutors to help students in a virtual "math lab".

8:58 PM
@amWhy That sounds like quite a project.
One of my biggest complaints about UCR was that they could never managed to put anything together which even approximated a math lab.
They had no dedicated computer lab for mathematics, nor a dedicated space for ad hoc or informal mathematics tutoring.
The chair of the department managed to get some funding for a math lab or math tutoring center a few years ago, but the university put it into a different room every quarter, so students never showed up.

@XanderHenderson Indeed it has been. It will likely remain as an option, even after COVID, (if there is ever an "After Covid" :()

So I laud any efforts to establish things like math labs.
Yay you!

@XanderHenderson Yikes. That never gave it a chance!

@amWhy No. And the department staffed the "math lab" with graduate students who all thought that they had better things to do. Among the graduate student, these assignments were called "math jail".

@XanderHenderson Not wise at all!

9:02 PM
Because they were actually 20 hour per week assignments, as opposed to teaching, which was 20 hours according to the contract, but never really amounted to more than 7 or 8 hours per week (in class time + office hours).
Personally, I found the math center assignments to be much less demanding on my time, since there was no prep to do, but I was in the minority.
I have a lot of good friends at UCR, but boy am I glad to be out of that culture. The consistent dismissal of undergraduates by a large number of the grad students was disheartening.

@XanderHenderson Yikes! Sometimes undergrad students excelling in calc are excellent in tutoring entry level college algebra/trig... they are so much closer in time to their learning... ditto for undergrads who've completed the calc sequence with excellence and currently studying linear algebra or DE, make excellent calc tutors.
At my institution, undergrads wanting to tutor must receive a faculty recommendation, which aids in their sense of it being a privilege. I can imagine that for grad students, if aid is contingent to 20 hr.s per week tutoring undergrads, they might end up as viewing it as a "necessary evil".

@amWhy At my bachelors/masters institution, the math center was staffed mostly by undergrads, with either a faculty member or graduate student in the room.

We do hire some grad students, but it's not their source of a stipend... it is additional cash. And we limit all tutors to 10 hours per week, maximum, for hours in the mathlab.

The supervising grad student or faculty was not expected to tutor very much (as such), but was there to answer thornier questions, and to provide some supervision and mentorship.

@XanderHenderson Indeed. Sounds close to what I've experienced.

9:14 PM
@amWhy Yeah, the model you describe sounds much better.

9:24 PM
@XanderHenderson Would you post, in the Cafe and Tavern Chat, a Word Game: four (or more) letter words that can be formed by the letters in PROBABILITY? Clearly, ABILITY is evident. I've found 16 other words... Just want to keep the tradition alive. You can blame the post on me, if you want! :P
OOPS, I'm up to 22 other words!!

posted
but I need to go right an exam, so I'm out of this one.

@XanderHenderson No problem! Thanks!
@XanderHenderson Good ones, I missed those on my once over, but now have five more!! :/ I thought of LAITY and RABBI...Me thinks I'm in spiritual mode ;D
@quid Hello, @quid!

9:42 PM
@amWhy it seems you weren't specifically suspended from chat, there was just a lag of the suspension from main. I was initially confused as you parent was not anymore math.se, but if you changed that post suspension the math.se one sticks.
@amWhy hello

@quid ;D o/
@quid Feel free to contribute to the new word game in the Cafe and Tavern Chat! I've found 28 words, plus Xander's two contributions.
@quid I don't know that it matters where one's parent site is, because I'm suspended from mathed.se, too. as it's my parent site, I was nonetheless suspended from math.se; alternatively, if math.se was taken to be my parent site, why am I suspended on math.se?? This site is getting to quirky for me, with too many loopholes for some users to go under the radar, and too much "default to strictest interpretation of a suspension, for users under the magnifying glass. I can't know what happened.
I have no blame for anyone, but I've been around long enough to fully get what's going on here.

@amWhy you aren't suspended on MESE. You can post on that site.

@quid Second to last comment edit. if math.se was taken to be my parent site, why am I suspended on mathed.se chat?? Edited, @quid.

@amWhy because SE chat is one thing.
If your chat user is suspended you are suspended everywhere on SE chat.
(Which does not include meta.SE chat and also not SO chat)

@quid Yes, but I've been suspended from math.se main, when my parent site was mathed.se, as it is now, but allowed to chat on math.se chat! Your last two posts are contrary the this, and if you can't recall this, then that's crazy making!

9:55 PM
@amWhy when did you change you parent back to MESE?
The "allowed to chat " was a lag.

@amWhy what happened for you to be suspended on math.se?
@quid Hi quid! heard a lot about you :o

It's like when you change user names it takes a while to land in chat.
@NordineLotfi the good stuff is true the bad stuff is slander ;D

@XanderHenderson That must have been rough :/.
@quid Ha! I gotta note that saying down next time someone tell me the same thing
as i said last time, do you like squid? ;) @quid

@NordineLotfi not much. I might eat it but it's not something I like specfiically.

@quid That doesn't answer my question.

10:01 PM
@quid I see. That's too bad :O would have made a pun since your nick look similar. (though i don't like squid either but that's beside the point)

@amWhy what is your question? Why you were suspended on math.se main?

@quid EEEEWE!!!!

@amWhy what is this, that remind me of some war cry i seen once
@quid That was my question too :O

@quid But it's not my parent site!! Previously I I was suspended on math.se, and spared from a chat ban on math.se because it wasn't my parent site!!

but why are you banned in the first place

10:04 PM
@NordineLotfi Just a version of YUCKY

YUCKY???
LUCKY?

@amWhy you recently create a chat room on math.se for that you definitely had to switch back to math. I don't know when you changed back.

@amWhy (I'm basically confused)
I didn't even knew you could get suspended from a particular SE hmm

@NordineLotfi Squid?? Yucky!!:

@amWhy Oh you meant this for squid :D I thought you said this in answer to why were you suspended on math.se
that's why i was confused

10:13 PM
@NordineLotfi I'm sorry! No, the thought of eating squid is not pleasant!

@amWhy Sorry, I'll stop mentioning it then :P

@Nordine, you can check any message of a righ-angled grey arrow (immediately to the left of a message addressing you, and if there, when you click on it, the message you wrote that a user is responding to is highlighted for your reference.

@amWhy OH yeah, i noticed this last time too, but didn't thought of doing it when seeing your answer, sorry x)

@quid Did you see my comment here?
@NordineLotfi No problem! It took me awhile to pick up a lot of stuff on SE!

@amWhy yes, momWhy ;-)
4

10:18 PM
@amWhy I starred it too

@quid :P

but, what's the backup backup plan though? @quid

@quid I'm in agony, @quid, because I just found a dozen more words in PROBABILITY !!! I will trust that users find most of them!! PILOT ORBIT LABOR ABORT LAITY BLOAT TRIBAL BROIL ... alright, I'm done for now!!

@amWhy the PROBABILITY that you can find existing words out of PROBABILITY is probably close to how improbable this all is!!

@NordineLotfi I've listed forty of them!! And there's no N nor E in the word!!

10:32 PM
@amWhy That's interesting :o
offtopic but, i always wanted to ask a certain question on math.se but it's so hard to actually form correctly enough, so that it won't get bashed (since my math knowledge is pretty much all over the place) it's also kind of hard to not get influenced by possibly more knowledgeable people telling you it's *impossible* (and only because they themselves don't know, rather than a clear proof it isn't)

Did that ever happened to anyone here?
(though if it was really important, i would probably bite the bullet hmm)

10:53 PM
@quid There is a discrepancy in the reasons given for my suspensions on math.se, and on math.se chat. chat profile reads: "https://chat.stackexchange.com/messages/55520292/history". This is not true, by your own words. Why can't SE/mods get things right? I did not post any inappropriate content in chat.
I take it you are gone for the evening, @quid. It seems I was in fact suspended for handling a contentious user in chat, which you assured me was not a problem. In any case, I wish this SE got it's "stories straight".

@amWhy I'm sorry this happened to you! hopefully you can have access back to math.se soon enough.

@NordineLotfi It won't be too long... 12 more days. But thanks!

11:34 PM
post the problem i mentioned on math.se (chat) hmm
pic for @amWhy since i don't think you can see the chat (yet)
(also seems like i can't edit my own past message more than once?)

@NordineLotfi everybody can see chat.

@quid oh, didn't know. Thought suspension affected chat too

@amWhy I don't know why exactly it is displayed like that. Likely because the now the parent does not align with the site where you got suspended.
@NordineLotfi it does, but it prevents posting not reading it. You don't need an account to read chat.
Thus any "reading ban" would be moot. Just log out.
Or use a browser instance where you are not logged in in parallel.

@quid I see :O that's good to know!

Anyway @amWhy I was confused at first but some effort was expended to establish that your chat ban is only a propagation of the main ban.
You were not suspended in chat for anything you did in chat.

11:56 PM
@quid did you see my comment here
(it's my own way to ask about the meaning of this chat name too)
