@amWhy I was not pingable any more and thus did not see this. I learned that you are suepended in chat five minutes ago in a weird way. I don't even yet know why you were chat suspended.
Anyway sorry for the delay in responding, but I did not get all those pings.
@NordineLotfi Who knows? Actually, searching for a translation from Latin to English of "quid" See: google.com/…
how many?
Translations of quid: adverb why cur, quare, quid, quod, quis, qui for what quid, quis, quorsum, quorsus, quapropter how many quot, quam multi, quantum, quis, quid
@XanderHenderson Yes, very much exhausted! My University has me teaching a linear algrebra course on line, but for grad students, I attend a seminar course in group theory with ten students. I'm out of practice teaching in a classroom!
@XanderHenderson I'm also part of a committee organizing online tutoring for the Math Lab (traditionally always done on campus, but given COVID, we recruited tutors to help students in a virtual "math lab".
One of my biggest complaints about UCR was that they could never managed to put anything together which even approximated a math lab.
They had no dedicated computer lab for mathematics, nor a dedicated space for ad hoc or informal mathematics tutoring.
The chair of the department managed to get some funding for a math lab or math tutoring center a few years ago, but the university put it into a different room every quarter, so students never showed up.
@amWhy No. And the department staffed the "math lab" with graduate students who all thought that they had better things to do. Among the graduate student, these assignments were called "math jail".
Because they were actually 20 hour per week assignments, as opposed to teaching, which was 20 hours according to the contract, but never really amounted to more than 7 or 8 hours per week (in class time + office hours).
Personally, I found the math center assignments to be much less demanding on my time, since there was no prep to do, but I was in the minority.
I have a lot of good friends at UCR, but boy am I glad to be out of that culture. The consistent dismissal of undergraduates by a large number of the grad students was disheartening.
@XanderHenderson Yikes! Sometimes undergrad students excelling in calc are excellent in tutoring entry level college algebra/trig... they are so much closer in time to their learning... ditto for undergrads who've completed the calc sequence with excellence and currently studying linear algebra or DE, make excellent calc tutors.
At my institution, undergrads wanting to tutor must receive a faculty recommendation, which aids in their sense of it being a privilege. I can imagine that for grad students, if aid is contingent to 20 hr.s per week tutoring undergrads, they might end up as viewing it as a "necessary evil".
@amWhy At my bachelors/masters institution, the math center was staffed mostly by undergrads, with either a faculty member or graduate student in the room.
We do hire some grad students, but it's not their source of a stipend... it is additional cash. And we limit all tutors to 10 hours per week, maximum, for hours in the mathlab.
The supervising grad student or faculty was not expected to tutor very much (as such), but was there to answer thornier questions, and to provide some supervision and mentorship.
@XanderHenderson Would you post, in the Cafe and Tavern Chat, a Word Game: four (or more) letter words that can be formed by the letters in PROBABILITY? Clearly, ABILITY is evident. I've found 16 other words... Just want to keep the tradition alive. You can blame the post on me, if you want! :P
@XanderHenderson Good ones, I missed those on my once over, but now have five more!! :/ I thought of LAITY and RABBI...Me thinks I'm in spiritual mode ;D
@amWhy it seems you weren't specifically suspended from chat, there was just a lag of the suspension from main. I was initially confused as you parent was not anymore math.se, but if you changed that post suspension the math.se one sticks.
@quid Feel free to contribute to the new word game in the Cafe and Tavern Chat! I've found 28 words, plus Xander's two contributions.
@quid I don't know that it matters where one's parent site is, because I'm suspended from mathed.se, too. as it's my parent site, I was nonetheless suspended from math.se; alternatively, if math.se was taken to be my parent site, why am I suspended on math.se?? This site is getting to quirky for me, with too many loopholes for some users to go under the radar, and too much "default to strictest interpretation of a suspension, for users under the magnifying glass. I can't know what happened.
I have no blame for anyone, but I've been around long enough to fully get what's going on here.
@quid Yes, but I've been suspended from math.se main, when my parent site was mathed.se, as it is now, but allowed to chat on math.se chat! Your last two posts are contrary the this, and if you can't recall this, then that's crazy making!
@Nordine, you can check any message of a righ-angled grey arrow (immediately to the left of a message addressing you, and if there, when you click on it, the message you wrote that a user is responding to is highlighted for your reference.
@quid I'm in agony, @quid, because I just found a dozen more words in PROBABILITY !!! I will trust that users find most of them!! PILOTORBITLABORABORTLAITYBLOATTRIBALBROIL ... alright, I'm done for now!!
offtopic but, i always wanted to ask a certain question on math.se but it's so hard to actually form correctly enough, so that it won't get bashed (since my math knowledge is pretty much all over the place) it's also kind of hard to not get influenced by possibly more knowledgeable people telling you it's *impossible* (and only because they themselves don't know, rather than a clear proof it isn't)
Did that ever happened to anyone here?
(though if it was really important, i would probably bite the bullet hmm)
@quid There is a discrepancy in the reasons given for my suspensions on math.se, and on math.se chat. chat profile reads: "https://chat.stackexchange.com/messages/55520292/history". This is not true, by your own words. Why can't SE/mods get things right? I did not post any inappropriate content in chat.
I take it you are gone for the evening, @quid. It seems I was in fact suspended for handling a contentious user in chat, which you assured me was not a problem. In any case, I wish this SE got it's "stories straight".
