@Catija I noticed that you visited the Physics.SE Meta Q&A regarding lowering the number of votes to close. I've offered a third choice, The Silver Hammer™.

Not gonna happen. We can change the number of votes needed very easily... it’s a site setting. We can’t quickly create a privilege that doesn’t exist.
It’s also only useful for duplicates unless I’m not understanding your suggestion.

Maxwell would not be pleased.

@Rubiksmoose somehow I remembered that as Maxwell's giant hammer

Let It Be - Rare studio filming.
@Catija OK. It has been suggested before, and useful for more than one site. As for "dupes only", while it does serve that purpose (and useful that way) it could be decided that some questions would be marked duplicate of this How to ask Homework question; particularly if they link a screenshot of a textbook. 😤
Thanks for your time, review.

@Rob that's for that community to decide

Rob
Tim Post was the first to suggest this. I am a member of that community, and posted the suggestion on meta. They are taking votes on it now, deciding after.

@Rob to be clear... we might do something like that eventually if we think it will help but in the sense of a quick remedy that doesn’t require dev time, changing the votes needed to close / reopen is much easier.

The 🌙 ☀️ hats?

THAT'S NO MOON!
Or is it?

The moon seems less frequently awarded, on the Leaderboard, for the top placed persons - took a minute to find someone else whom had one.

@YaakovEllis Hi! Can we please get the ability to see which off-topic reason was used to close something if one does not have close voting privileges? I don't get why it's hidden—it's not something that could be used to attack people. The new close reasons are mostly fine except for this one major problem. It ignores those of us, such as me on Sci-Fi, who flagged a lot of stuff for a long time before getting to the close votes privilege, by hiding information.

@Stormblessed does anyone other than the OP need to know the actual reason?

Q: Combining hats?

StormblessedI was on Politics just now, and noticed this user: On my screen, it appears that they are wearing both Where in the World? and Warm Welcome at the same time. When I try to equip hats, however, there seems to be a one-per-user limit for use of them. What's up here? Is this a glitch, or is the...

lol. Old trick

@JourneymanGeek well we should be able to judge whether or not it was right; people who can't vote to reopen can still comment and stuff. It's hiding information with no explanation—e.g. on Politics "off-topic" can include stuff very much about politics that is off-topic due to being an attack
@JourneymanGeek yeah I was gonna say "here's a question based on a misguided premise, get your free rep now $$$" or something :P

ooh tempting. But is it fair? ;p

@JourneymanGeek That is caused by those Open Search headers. I assume those sites are supposed to return a 404 when example.com/search.php?term=grace+hopper is retrieved. Instead they return a 200 with the title and description faked. We can't have nice things.

Eh - I don't think people could afford TVs out east until the japanese started making em.

Literally saw this happen: Foot on Moon.

even then, were uncommon enough they had 'common' TVs in various public places
apparently the earliest TV I remember was...
swedish? 0_0
Luxor was a Swedish home electronics and computer manufacturer located in Motala, established in 1923 and acquired by Nokia in 1985. The brand name is now owned by Turkish company Vestel and is used for televisions sold in the Swedish market. Originally a manufacturer of tape recorders, radios, television sets, stereo systems, and other home electronics, it launched its first home computer, the ABC 80 in 1978. The succeeding ABC 800 series was introduced in 1981 with new releases in 1983 being produced until the ABC line was terminated in 1986. == History == The company was established in 1923...
I can't remember what the previous TV was, only it was black and white

Rob
Living in North America we had Admiral
Color cost an arm and a leg

Well, early 80s?
Kinda when stuff stopped costing an arm and a leg, and maybe just an arm
My dad took a loan to buy our first PC. A reasonable PC is under a grand, maybe even down to 2-300 if you didn't mins something janky with an atom processor, or some chinese piece of siliconmongery

Rob
Funny how throughout the years a thou remained a common price for new electronics like TVs and Computers, it started creeping up to 12 then 15, then it fell to just under a thou (for something reasonably decent, there was always crap for less and premium stuff for more).
The did the same for cheaper SLR cameras.

@πάνταῥεῖ I think we're going to see a lot more of these over the coming 6 to 8 weeks but I doubt the valid concerns will get noticed due to the s/n ratio.

@rene "the s/n ratio" I am not familiar with that term. Can you clarify it for me please?

@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog I was expecting that

@Stormblessed I can't take support requests in chat. Keeping track of them on meta is hard enough. I think that we have already addressed your request in other places, but if you feel like you have new points to make, please post them on mse

4:16 PM
@Stormblessed And speaking of which, I had previously requested this as an answer, but my request was declined.
We are intentionally only showing the details to users who have the ability to take action (vote to close/reopen). Not going to change this right now. As to changing the rep requirements, that is tangentially related to this release. If you feel strongly about it, please make your case of a separate post. — Yaakov Ellis ♦ Dec 8 at 13:34
@YaakovEllis Although it would be nice if you further elaborated on why it's only shown to users who can take action; to me, it's valuable info even for those who can't, and even those without rep can sort of take action by casting recommend closure flags.
2
Frankly, I don't see a reason why people who wish to see them should be denied it.

@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog we will be trying to make this type of info available soon on the timeline. But for 99.9% of users (or some really high number like that), the actual reasons are not actionable, are a distraction, and are just needed.
Sorry, I know it is annoying, but we are moving away from including features like this that are just wanted by power users from the main ui in cases when it runs against the goals of the generation user use case. (and when we can, will try to move them to secondary screens line the timeline, where it is still accessible to those who want to know)

@YaakovEllis Yeah, I guess that argument is needed. But one thing I pointed out in my original answer that comment I linked is on is the ability to have a setting to allow displaying those. If disabled by default, that would be friendly to the power users, while still catering to others.
I don't want to have to click through to a secondary screen every single time I want to view this info.
s/is needed/makes sense

4:32 PM
@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog that would be awesome. Unfortunately we just don't have the bandwidth to be able to work on niche features like this right now. I hear how this would be helpful for you though.

@YaakovEllis Yeah, I can see how that's a showstopper. In any case, thanks for being there to take input from us!

Rob
Bandwidth +1

5:19 PM
@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog wait what? If it’s off-topic what screen shows the reason?

We have a couple of questions related to the new close notices on Physics meta, eg physics.meta.stackexchange.com/q/12571/123208 A lot of us are unhappy that our recently updated close reason for homework questions isn't generally visible.
We want all users of the site to understand that such questions aren't welcome, both question askers and potential answerers. Just letting the OP & high rep users see the close reason is unsatisfactory. The low rep answerers need to see it too.
3
@YaakovEllis Understood. But it's nice to be able to discuss this stuff with you informally in chat. ;) I certainly wouldn't expect you to treat such discussions as formal feature requests.

@Stormblessed There is none yet.
"we will be trying to make this type of info available soon"

@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog A link to the timeline page would be awesome, rather than having to manually construct such links (or use a userscript that adds them).

The userscript to add timeline links is probably one of the ones I use the most.

5:40 PM
Timeline is in the process of getting a makeover and will also be made more accessible
3

@Mithical yes Samuel Liew's one with revisions, username, and timeline is so useful
Is that the one?

Accessible in the sense of "findable" or as in ? Or both? ;)
@Stormblessed No. Art's. I think it predates Samuel's by a few years :P

@YaakovEllis Yay!
Userscripts are great. Unfortunately, most phone browsers don't support them. I guess I should install Firefox for Android...

My userscripts (generally) don't care much about how they look. For instance, the links underneath a question are a bit of a mess with all the scripts I have...
@PM2Ring They are indispensable in some cases. I doubt SE will be adding support for rot13 comments at any point soon ;)

@Mithical :) Back in the day, I used rot13 so much that I could read & write it pretty fast. But I use it so rarely these days that my rot13 skills are a little rusty. Plus on my computer I have a couple of rot13 bookmarklets I wrote on my Favorites bar.

5:50 PM
Yeah. Last year I could read it okay-ish, but it's been too long since I used it regularly... so I depend on the script to read comments on Puzzling.SE :P
(It's used to keep spoilers out of plain view in comments.)

I used to practice by creating "rotagrams": words or phrases that become anagrams of themselves when you rot13 them. One short but cute one is "tang" which reverses itself to "gnat".

Heh! That is interesting.

I suppose a rotagram-based game or puzzle could appeal to some of the regulars on Puzzling.SE.

Go for it.

6:23 PM
@PM2Ring I understand. Please post on mse highlighting your use case. Definitely isn't something we can address right away, but this is an area where there will be ongoing development, so hearing the viewpoints will help

"If I'm praying on MSE, what direction should I face?"
"More important than the actual direction in which you face is the direction in which you direct your heart..."
