@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard I've never particularly seen the utility of those, except for trying to make a point

@Catija
Color blindness, also known as color vision deficiency, is the decreased ability to see color or differences in color. Color blindness can make some educational activities difficult. Buying fruit, picking clothing, and reading traffic lights can be more challenging, for example. Problems, however, are generally minor and most people adapt. People with total color blindness, however, may also have decreased visual acuity and be uncomfortable in bright environments. The most common cause of color blindness is an inherited fault in the development of one or more of the three sets of color sensing...
(Section links don't onebox properly)

I'm aware of what color blindness is... as far as I'm aware, there's not a variety of it that would turn yellow into pink.

@Catija That's actually a section link to Tritanopia; that onebox doesn't show it correctly, but the link works
"Yellow is indistinguishable from pink"
@Catija You found that?

My question has two duplicates and counting; what do you guys think of the answer?

Q: How do I get attention for old, unfixed bug reports and feature requests without official responses here on Meta?

Sonic the Anonymous HedgehogI posted a question here on Meta Stack Exchange, or on a per-site meta, regarding a bug I found in the system. I got no comments, or a few comments stating that this is a legitimate bug (and not by design). However, it's been quite a long time, and no official response was ever posted there. Or,...

Note that I was careful to not say "guarantee" or "ensure", and instead said "increase your chances".

I dunno.. will that increase the chances if it's closed as dupe by community anyway?

@SensibleAlexander Do what?
Can you read the answer, please?

@rene Your use of Chaos Control on this question is incorrect. The target asks if the other question is unanswered, while this question asks if the other one is answered, but none of the answers worked for the OP.
If anything, you should have used your Chaos Emerald on the target question to that to close it as a dupe of my question, which is worded better, and the answer to the latter is much better (it mentions things like putting a bounty and posting a new question if it's different enough, which the answers on the former don't say at all).
@rene Hey, wait!

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog fine

1:22 PM
@rene nope, not a bug...

You had to try it? ;)

Just in case, but the peculiar thing is, it added a semicolon ; like example.com>;

example.com"%-^_`{|}~\.<>
brb take a trip to sandbox...

chat uses a mildly different dialect of markdown ;p
In fact, half certain chat, comments and posts all use slightly different dialects of it

Interesting outcome...
seems both comment and chat uses almost the same parser
with the peculiar ; added on certain characters (test result: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/1034/conversation/…)
URL parser on post doesn't have that problem (test result: meta.stackexchange.com/a/306445/241919)

yes?

Anyways, today I got my first ten repz on space.se

@JohnDvorak Cool! With an answer?

Yes
Should I link it here?

so wlan0 is the wifi device?

often yes

@JohnDvorak oh great... OP's SO account is suspended for voting irregularities...

2:15 PM
hah
@TelautonomousKitty there's new "predictable" interface name thing... that is anything but

yay
g2g, bye

so on my fedora box, my wifi device is wlp1s0
.... of course they use the reverse slot/port order cisco does.
Predictable my a***.

on my machine it's Wireless LAN adapter WiFi :P

oh that's windows

user202362
I got the error "No wireless interfaces found"

2:18 PM
wlan0 is older/sensible linux notification

user202362
but when I did 'sudo iwlist wlan0 scan | grep SSID'

what's telling you no wireless interfaces found?

user202362
raspberry pi

also wlan0 not associated

@JohnDvorak I found it, TIL we glue rockets together...

user202362

user202362
I am treating pi as just another cut down linux machine

so should be able to apply (modified) linux fixes

ah
it more or less is
could you hand configure it?
using erm... /etc/network/interfaces

@SensibleAlexander maybe he figured its an easy way to get rep!
Learning experience!

2:54 PM
@SensibleAlexander heh
@JourneymanGeek statistically speaking, you can serial vote yourself to high heavens and you won't get caught unless you do it really really recklessly and predictably

@Magisch why bother? ;p
I think If I put my mind to it, and have some degree of ability to fake my way through a subject, I can get the rep the fair way ;p

@JourneymanGeek idk, you tell me why people do it

cause people are dumb?

But the vast vast vast majority of people do get away with it for a long time
I'm really starting to lose faith in the rep system in general
In particular I've seen so many indian accounts serially upvoting that at this point I find myself second guessing the score of any post by an account with an indian name

hah
Its a society that's a little obsessed with grades

3:02 PM
gets really unfair too because I've been slowly developing a almost conscious bias that way

“It’s a life’s work to see yourself for what you really are and even then you might be wrong.”—Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men

You know the old saw about how 90% of an iceberg is hidden under water? At Stack Overflow, we strive to be a reverse iceberg by sharing as much as possible about what’s going on. 2017 presents a bit of a problem since the big news is that we’ve seen a lot of interest in companies paying for private Q&A. The other two legs of our revenue tripod (ads and job placement) are stable. But it turns out Stack Overflow is best known for providing a platfo …

5:28 PM
@rene But he's honest about it... he even tweeted it out to the entire twitt-o-sphere.

@Catija well, true but I see a pattern ;)

I think something they're poking at broke one of the scripts that I use... but not another that has similar functionality. :/
It was working yesterday but today it's failing.

@Catija yeah, the CSS changes will break a few scripts.
@Catija anything I can look at or is it a mod-only script?

@rene It's a mod script, sadly. But thanks for the offer. :D

@JamieKrug given that Galadude seems rather inactive, and since Stack Overflow never unpins accepteds (unless they're self answers), updating your answer to reflect the new information is the right thing to do. Ideally everyone would curate their answers and keep them up to date, but that would be an unrealistic expectation for most people. Even I only curate answers I get updates on anyways... — Aaron Hall 44 secs ago
That's another good reason to unpin accepteds after some period of time and/or downvotes.
Is Jon Skeet going to curate his... looks it up... 36000 answers?

5:50 PM
@AaronHall well, I don't know but it sounds like an awesome plan to start stalking him about it ...

@rene Can you imagine how many pings he must get daily already? There's probably tons of overlapping material, too. If he complains, we could probably just say "You should have closed more dupes!"
Of course, if that's the case, he can just start closing dupes and just curate the dupe target - if that's what he wants to do...

I think he makes a great contribution but you're right, he probably gets as much pinged as mods.
@AaronHall we do notice him closing dupes now and then, or close voting.

It's a different system but sure...
ok, I shouldn't speculate about Skeet.

But IIRC he mostly answers during his commute so it might be hard to proper hunt for dupes in that case for him.

Skeet has about 55 answers for each of mine...

6:02 PM
@AaronHall he is Hors catégorie

That's 55x the opportunity for people to comment on his posts.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Yes that's my final conclusion, but I went through several phases, and offered lots of bounties... I still do it out of habit, but not really expecting it would really help. So yes, it's useless and waste of reputation, but if one has enough to spare it doesn't really matter.
@SmokeDetector why
huh? What's that?? @Andy @ArtOfCode @angussidney ^
How Smokey get that info?

Problem: a one-page PDF file that fails accessibility checks, and few realistic prospects of making it pass the check (the software that deals with that kind of content doesn't support accessibility features). Solution: convert it to a PNG, an embedded image is fine as long as it has an alt text.

user315433
My good deed for the day, supporting accessibility.

@if.... should... data science and cross validated be two separate sites?
I understand that cross validated users have little patience for engineering questions though...
thinks "I should stop procrastinating and write this actual machine learning material..."
when I say "procrastinating on doing something" I really mean "thinking about the subject"

user315433
@AaronHall But real data scientists wouldn't participate on Cross Validated for risk of being mistaken for a mere statistician.

Q: Where did comment links go?

Mr_and_Mrs_DToday on refreshing a tab with a stackoverflow question open the dates of the comments disappear - I mean the links to the comments: becomes: What's going on here ?

Firefox ESR seems to be the common factor in those reports

Is that even supported?

@Catija I dunno. I thought FF was on 58 now but I don't know what kind of version scheme they exactly use
and what all these characters mean

> Extended Support Release
A community-led project that allows organizations to benefit from the speed, flexibility and security of Firefox while getting the support they need.
Sounds like something that might break...

Welcome in IT ...

But the "supported browsers" meta specifically says that they only support the last two versions... so I'm not sure that they should expect it to work...

Q: Which browsers are officially supported, and what else do I need?

EarlzWhich browsers are officially supported by Stack Exchange? Also, what else is needed in order to use every feature of the site? Return to FAQ index

10:27 PM
Correct. And Balpha fixed something y'day for a feature that was only introduced somewhere in v 50 or so. It is not guaranteed he keeps doing that, if the current version just works ™
Ok, confirmed that is caused by that ESR version

Yeah, that's 6 versions behind, if they're on 52... so I'm not really sure there's any hope for support at this point.

well, it depends on % of breakage. If 80% of SO userbase uses ESR 52, I'm sure a fix will be out from SO.

Sure.
But if what they're implementing isn't supported by the old version of the browser, then that seems like they'd be stuck with not being able to update the site structure to be more useful for people who aren't on the old versions...

I've seen the mobile chat usability decline for my mobile browser but I'm using a FF version from 2011 or so and updates for my Nokia N900 have long ago been stopped.
@Catija yeah, they have to fallback. Maintaining backward compatibility is so complex ...

So they can check the browser and use the old version of the code in browsers that don't support the current version? Or something like that?

10:39 PM
@Catija yeah, you can do a browsersniff based on the useragent that gets send. See modernizr.com

Interesting.

Q: Tags with "+" in them broke recently

oisynIt seems that the parsing of tags with plusses (+) in them broke recently. This is very inconvenient for topics like C++. See these questions tagged with c++: "[c++]". Now, if you select another tag from the list on the right, such as "templates", it used to bring you to "[c++] [templates]". How...

Ugh... that's crummy.

Works fine for me, though?

well THAT'S not good

10:44 PM
actually looks like we started writing the sidebar differently

@Catija Probably caching, I can repro

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I don't use SO... there's nothing to cache.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I repo-ed as well

I was missing a step, apparently. You have to be using the sidebar to add more tags.

yes
looking at the wayback machine to see when that broke
love that wayback machine.
been a few days
looks like it broke around the 25th
inexplicably no archive for the 25th... Coincidence?

10:52 PM
@Shog9 That's why they introduced a feature to allow people to manually tell it to go crawl a certain site

I'll just go back to the 25th & do that then

Good idea, we wait here ...

Marc Gravell posted a message on the 25th asking for us to report any tag "silliness", so I guess this qualifies.

@Shog9 No, what I meant was that they did that so they could not use the excuse "inexplicable", and could simply claim that no one requested archival on that day

that's a nice explanation, but clearly this was a Concerted Effort from Dark Forces to conceal their Tag Shenanigans
They thought blacking out Archive.org would save them... THEY WERE WRONG!
