Bicycles reached 10000 questions... finally. Took them almost 7 years. The most viewed question of the last year: Why do men's bicycles have a top tube while women's bicycles don't?

1:21 AM
@JasonC I think the left looks best

1:41 AM
@ɥʇǝS Welp, I know what non-default option you'll be setting yours to, lol.

1:55 AM
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@JasonC i personally choose left because it's consistent with site chooser, but welp, I'll get a non-default one :p

2:39 AM
Damn, I have to admit, that left margin version is growing on me.
Working on a compact mode for the list:

@peterh if you create a room with someone you're expected to write something there. I doubt Shog will just appear there and say "Hello, do you need anything? Please tell me what you want and I'm at your service."
Just saying. :)
Creating such a room cause instant inbox item, so if done for nothing it's just irritating.
@Guero not just you... if anything, GoCalc is more catchy. ;)
@Jason how's your pimple? ;)
@Telkitty you usually add some context, what is this about this time?

user202362
 chasing after you

user202362
geese chasing after you ...

Not everything in life is a contest, just chill a little.
;-)
@Telkitty do geese eat cheese?

user202362
6:43 AM
my chicken loves cheese

My nephew was chased by a duck when he was 6 or so, he's traumatized since then. :/
@JasonC nothing you can do to help? (Sorry for late reply, remembered you posted something about your cat yesterday and that I forgot to reply, so looked for it now. :))
Still at work? @Journeyman

user202362
I think many people have been chased after by geese/duck when they were young - those bastards actually size you up and compute their success rate before launch an attack

7:01 AM
@Telkitty wow, sounds like smart ducks!

@ShadowWizard Sorry, I didn't know! I was not sure, if I have enough reason to directly contact him!

@peterh better think twice before creating a room with someone, especially SE employee... you can still post there, but just creating a room and leaving it empty appears weird. Anyway no harm done I guess. :)

@ShadowWizard yes

@ShadowWizard The logical behavior of the sw had been that he gets pinged only after my first message, not on the chatroom opening! I didn't have any intent to annoy him!

@peterh sw?
And yes, creating the room cause invitation, you actually can't ping him there unless he enter the room.
Anyway, time for a..... space sandwich!

7:26 AM
@ShadowWizard i mean... i guess i could squeeze her...
Wow, even the spammers are quiet today.

@JasonC but not off topic crappers.... ;(
@JasonC Heimlich maneuver?
Great, spammers heard you @Jason. Spam survived 31 seconds.

7:51 AM
@peterh if you need to contact someone from SE, the contact us link is the right way, even for us mods.

@JourneymanGeek well, chat is faster and is legit, e.g. see this, but of course should not be abused.
And as mods, don't you have the TL to contact SE team directly?
heh, JNat, Jon, and Tim (Stone) are still inside CoGro Musings even though it's frozen for over 200 days by now.... :D

8:25 AM
@ShadowWizard sw == software, abbreviation. In this context, the SE chat software.
@ShadowWizard Thanks, I hope.

8:38 AM
@peterh oh. Well, IMO the existing behavior is good but you can always start a new fr.... :)

8:51 AM
fr ... sw ...

ph ...

@ShadowWizard Hehe. What is fr? :-)

9:08 AM
@peterh in MSE-ish: Feature Request. 1:1
:D

LOL
Just hit me, those are things @Jason would totally do. :D

9:31 AM
@Elephant The community'll be updated as soon as I have anything :)

@ShadowWizard ok ok :-)

2 hours later…
11:22 AM
@ShadowWizard actually for most things, its preferred we use the contact us link ;p
If its an emergency, or there's a CM around for a quick thing maaaayve

@JourneymanGeek and wait 6-8 weeks?? OK.... :/

Thought communication between mods and SE team should be faster.
So what is TL for? Just off topic rants?

Well, at this point we can handle most stuff on our own
@ShadowWizard in a sense, there's a lot of cross pollination between mods.
And we have a lot of the tools we need, the rare situation where we need a CM now is when there's say an ongoing troll attack of some flavour
Even that, there's a few unofficial tricks that help
tbh, I can't really complain

@JourneymanGeek well, what I had in mind is more like general discussion with the team about stuff, not urgent request for action.

11:28 AM
Any drama in TL? :)

ah
tbh, I do that a lot more here than TL :p

@Elephant Who took my diamond?! is probably typical... :D

Tavern is TL for public.

Students Lounge, perhaps.

@Elephant well, we're not supposed to talk about the specifics of TL :p
@ShadowWizard if someone lost their diamond, they wouldn't be able to get into TL

11:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek employee can... their diamond is just for decoration.

@ShadowWizard employees are a while different kettle of fish ;p

(e.g. seen many times SE employees using moderator only tags, without having any diamond.)

(and there's been a few employees who stayed on as mods while they were working at SE)
@ShadowWizard emplyees essentially have global mod powers

yup
But even them don't get the shiny combined flair if not having enough repz....
-12
Q: Can the combined flair restriction of 200+ rep on at least one site be lifted for a Stack Exchange employee?

Shadow WizardI just went over the list of Community Managers and this caught my attention: Different look and feel, too gray... poor Ana deserves more in my opinion. I went and dug up her combined flair just to see the reason it wasn't used: You do not have any linked accounts with 200+ rep True,...

;)
hehe, it's not declined yet.
Whoa, @Ana got over 5k in the meantime.... lol
Now @Juan got the lowest total rep with 1.2k only, but all CM's got the shiny flair.
Still, might happen again when they hire new CM who isn't part of SE yet...

JasonC for CM

11:46 AM
lol
I'd apply if they were hiring.
and I know a few other people who'd apply who I actually think would be better than me ;p

My body is full of sports injuries, f**k!

So stop hurting yourself while doing sport....

user202362
I didn't want to hurt myself either ...

Well, doing sport properly is difficult, failing to prepare properly results in injuries. Been there done that... :)

@Telkitty at least you got your daily exercise...
or not.

Spending 30 minutes on stretching before and after 30 minutes of sports triple the time you have to spend, so not many people will do that...

12:17 PM
I did 24k steps and 15.5km at work today according to my watch T T

user202362
pretty good

@JourneymanGeek that's... hmm.... out of words

You should charge per step! @Journeyman

like taxi?

12:19 PM
Or at least ask the company to pay for new shoes every month.... :D

lol
they're too damned cheap. See that whole saturday work thing.

@Elephant nah, he's not driving anyone ;)

user202362
I did 10k steps and 9km today, plus I got bruised toes, strained back and knee injuries

user202362
and that didn't stop me going for a jog

Hope at least it's all with air conditioning? @Journeyman

12:20 PM
nope

Sweating all day long isn't nice.

We're spread between three buildings

Otherwise, its their problem.

Q: How should I approach a co-worker on matters of personal hygiene?

yannisIt's a rather delicate issue that I had to deal with once or twice in the past, and can't really say I handled it effectively. I'm a bit crude, and socially awkward and would pretty much prefer to avoid such discussions with co-workers/employees. I've managed to avoid the issue by delegating it1,...

@ShadowWizard at least it's not Rafflesia...

12:24 PM
@ShadowWizard so far I've had HR complain about me wearing collarless T shirts on casual friday, and having my shirt untucked so...

Had one such case in my whole life, while working in big company... he just didn't use deodorant and sweat a LOT. o_o

they'll complain. And I'll go "Well, I need to walk between buildings in office wear. What should I do?"

@JourneymanGeek lol worse than my army days! :D

(shrug so I just wear cargo pants on friday cause the hell with it).

@JourneymanGeek easy, walk with this in your pocket:
:P

12:28 PM
AI-powered deodorant?

@Elephant of course, connected to the armpits, programmed to send bit of spray when it detects sweat.
Hopefully, it's protected against hackers. :D

@Derpy you buy this for your kids? ;)

@ShadowWizard nope, just trying to launch the "random products knock-off day"

@ShadowWizard Oh boy, I love to travel. Where are we going?
@Telkitty sport is unhealthy ...

12:44 PM
@rene not with me. With @Journeyman who walks ~20km per day between buildings. Enjoy! :D

I walk less than 1km

@ShadowWizard Hmm, I'm better suited in a natural environment
@ShadowWizard Normally I walk to my car and from my car to the office which I think is < 250m in total. Today is a bit more as I took a train and bus so I had to transfer and the train and bus stations are never at the spot where you really need to be.

@rene nice... same for me, and walking from car to school with the kids is adding 200-500 meters as well... :D
@rene pretty sure there are plants and trees outside between the buildings... right, @Journeyman? :)

Lol
Mostly boringly urban. One office building, petrol station, roads...

Another academic year has recently ended, bringing with it a new season of graduations to celebrate and a new crop of freshly-minted graduates entering the software industry. The 2017 Stack Overflow Developer Survey provides context and data for understanding developers who are just entering the workforce compared to more experienced developers. Let’s use this year’s survey results to gain a deeper understanding of these new graduates.

Not all professional software developers go to college, but most do. In our survey, 77.5% of professional developers had a bachelor’s degree or …

A: Encountering a bear in water?

TarynAssuming your child can either swim or has a lifevest on, jump into water, turn canoe upside down and hide under it. I thought about this while canoeing with my daughter and her daddy. I told him about my plan if we encounter a bear and the bear decides lunge at us. ;) have a nice day!

user315433
I wonder if this actually works better than hiding from a bear under a blanket.

@Guero I read that as "Encountering a beer in water" and was like, huh?

@Guero Should it? Not that I'm aware of. ;) (But I'll ask.)
Going public there tomorrow.

user315433
@AdamLear Okay, I forgot if it's a Monday or Tuesday thing. Thanks for confirming tho.

@Guero it has to be in sync with Microsoft's patch Tuesday: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/89?m=6027025#6027025 ...

user315433

Huh, more like a compulsion than an election?
(sorry Yvette, had to make that rhyming)

user315433
What is like expulsion but in the opposite direction?

impulsion

6:16 PM
annexation

user315433
@TravisJ makes sense but that's related to "impulse" instead

oh, thought it was a joke

user315433
conscription

how about ingress?

user315433
No, expulsion means being forced to exit, not just exiting.

6:19 PM
assimilate

user315433
So it should be: being forced to enter.

heh, a forced entry?
no comment

user315433
Okay. So Yvette was conscripted and is to be assimilated.

that sounds okay

user315433
Moderators being the Borg, as we know.

#TIL
They are awfully picky for the Borg. Must be a distant cousin or something.

@Guero Are you talking about a physical object being expelled? Or something broader? Or like expulsion of a concept?
Ingestion, integration, assimilation, etc.
Depending on context.
Absorption, admission
Reception
Inclusion, sort of

Sorry, Shog9 already won the RSTLNE round with "assimilate".
:P

user315433
@JasonC Expulsion of a person from a group, like from a school.

Brainwashing, assimilation,
They could be shanghaied
Coerced, if by threats
I don't think there's a single word that strictly implies "forced to join a group". Shanghai probably comes closest.
And isn't completely uncommon.
Kidnapped I guess, is sometimes used in that sense

7:11 PM
lol wow
Clearly not an answer, just so ridiculously odd to post that as an answer though. I mean, is it an advertisement? Is it just trolling? Who would waste their time on that??

user315433
We get this sort of spam quite often, witch doctors promising to cure something or return a husband, etc. Dr_mack is one of those, metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/…

user315433
I imagine their target audience is in the developing world.

Well... apparently the level of deception in society can still baffle me.
Alfred was right I guess.

user315433
Another of those has a U.S. phone number, 1 (914) 517 3229 -- Googling the number shows this sort of spam is pretty much everywhere.

user315433
That's near NYC, possibly "serving" refugees/immigrants there.
