@Shog9 So when are you going to add "Call Employee" to the help menu?
funny, was just talking about that yesterday
02:10
Lol
but in all seriousness, there's already a "contact us" link on every page. And... Folks do use it for general "howto" questions. I suspect putting it in the help menu would mean some very bad days for JNat & animuson.
You can deliver CMs to people's houses with drones.
user315433
@StackExchange has 17K followers... last tweet: April 6, 2016. An anniversary coming up.
A weird thought... I'd be super curious to see the results of A/B testing the Help Center page on new users with and without that enormous banner above the search box, and tracking if people click the links in there more. Maybe it's just me but I've always kind of felt like having to scroll down is a bit of a barrier, then I'm just compelled to type in the search box instead of looking through those links, and the search results are never satisfying.
It makes the quick links look like a footer or an afterthought or "additional info that I'm not interested in" or something.
probably optimizing the wrong thing
best way to get someone to read a help article? Link to it directly in a place where they're being told they can't do something.
(still tiny % of folks will click through, but raw numbers stomp anyone browsing)
02:29
@Shog9 I guess, but currently everybody's mostly directed to /help. It's always boggled my mind why /help/on-topic and /help/how-to-ask aren't directly linked to from /ask.
Oh I guess it's on SO.
Still, "Asking Help" doesn't exactly scream "Find out what's on topic here".
@JasonC huh, I wonder when that was customized
@JasonC look again
Magic!

@Fawad yes, any 15k user or a moderator can unprotect any question.
@NormalHuman they probably lost their keys
But with Nick tweeting like crazy, it's not really needed anyway. ;)
@Shog9 people also ask stuff like "How to get a girlfriend?" ;-)
(my friends (not me!) used to make prank calls to free numbers when we were young and mess with the support people....)
@ShadowWizard many inappropriate jokes possible on that one ...
09:41
@rene like? ;)
I'm not going to risk to get flagged
09:57
@ShadowWizard "My friends"
@ShadowWizard you want me to get flagged? How nice of you ;)
10:10
@JourneymanGeek yes! Really! I was a good boy! :P
@rene of course, I am a good friend!
user202362
I was never a good girl when I was young - always talking in the class, frequently late, hardly completed homework. Pretty much teachers nightmare
user202362
Then like many geniuses (although I am not one), I ended in one of the top universities in the country, had scholarship, graduated with honour etc etc ...
user202362
they tell you, hardwork is everything, I can tell you: it is not
10:26
@ShadowWizard SO IT WAS YOU!
10:45
Reasons to hate not being a mod. I have a spelling error on a meta.se comment I can't fix ><
11:18
@Telkitty so, you were a wild nerd. ;)
@JourneymanGeek flag! ;)
@ShadowWizard its like... one charecter
@JourneymanGeek YES!
@JourneymanGeek surely any CM/dev/chef would love to fix it for you..... :D
@ShadowWizard if the chef would fix it. I would SO totally flag it
(I wonder, can SE chef get a diamond on MSE? After all, they are SE employees.... ;))
but its a reply to a PeterH comment that was completely wrong so meh
11:20
@JourneymanGeek so.... delete? :)
But but
it has a upvote.
That peterH guy annoys me in weird ways. :/
(not that it matters)
He's not a troll, yet some of his actions/responses are so weird.
I'm tempted to think he is one.
11:22
nah
No more than @Telkitty anyway. :)
I've never actually seen @Telkitty troll properlike
Though she became a good troll(ess). :D
outside calling herself a troll ;p
@JourneymanGeek her really troll-ish posts are deleted by now
And chat messages... though some must remain
She kept using the word "pussy" and kept being angry why she got chat banned.
As she "meant" pussycat.
ah
So, I can't imagine peter's unaware people are unhappy with some of his... odder viewpoints
11:24
Now let's bury this before I am banned.... :D
@JourneymanGeek unhappy is one thing, damaging SE and giving bad advice is something else, which is not acceptable.
Going to play with kids, might be back later... hopefully not banned.... ;)
@ShadowWizard yup. But most of his targets seem to be people who know better
Mods for example

Q: WAMPApplicationError

user35124 I got this when I tried ruuning WAMP and it stops me from opening WAMP. I went into Command Prompt and I typed iisreset /stop and I think that caused this error to happen. I tried iisreset /start but it says it failed to start. Can anybody help me please

What a weird site to ask the wrong question on
@JasonC I've seen that one on MSE as well, today, wait: it still is: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/292904/wamp-application-error
Oh maybe they're just mildly trolling.
lol
I'd close that on SU
also.... wamp dosen't use iis so..

I'm usually more entertaining
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, what do you know about SU, leave it to the experts ... ;)
@rene probably timing too
it came up when I was asleep
(pesky need for sleep)
@JourneymanGeek you better pick your battles carefully. That comment one had a toxic smell over it. That is why I only left a comment.
@rene meh. I don't actually care that much about the downvote
and I do care a fair bit about chat
12:19
I hope somebody moves the comments on that comment question to chat.
lol
for great justice
12:35
@rene why trolling? Anyway already voted, found a bug in mobile web... (Not showing the "you already voted to delete")
@ShadowWizard they posted on WB.se as well
@rene drama? Where? ;)
@ShadowWizard Because 30 minutes later, it ended up on Worldbuilding, and under a different account.
It's also entirely possible that they're legitimately stupid.
But it's unfair to assume that level of stupidity. :P
@ShadowWizard Open MSE or any site meta. You'll have a full weekend of entertainment

@rene oh
@rene or Tavern when @Jason didn't sleep...
@JourneymanGeek you... sleep... ?!
:P
@JourneymanGeek yeah or high rep users... Or me... :/
12:41
@ShadowWizard people who know better
We should put together a "periodic table of programmers".
I want the chemical formula for "programmer with a vague sense of how relativity works who insists on posting subtly incorrect explanations of it everywhere and fiercely arguing about it".
That guy is everywhere.
@JasonC so you say @JonSkeet is Hydrogen?
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, so definitely not. He's more like ... 118.
Also "SO user who finds the concept of human perception of color mind-blowing and so posts some random answer about rods and cones on every question about bit depth or color spaces."
I hate that guy.
I think hydrogen is "gimme teh codez".
But Hydrogen is #1
13:01
@JasonC classy troll man, classy troll ;p
I figure it'll take 118 downvotes to get me down below 10k so I've got some padding.
;p
I'll get there eventually shrug ;p
tbh some might upvote that for sheer amusement

@JasonC were you inspired 'from this post?
14:04
Heh
Tbh I didn't mean it as a troll. I was vaguely thinking of this post, which was arguably more successful.
@JasonC so you start working on the LED project this week?

18:15
@JasonC I want to be the undiscovered element
You can be 119.
Or you could just be composed of that element that is "that programmer who always wants to be the undiscovered element".
The only problem here is I'm not a programmer
Oh, sorry, then I guess you're just a... photon or something.
HAHA, SHUT UP, PHOTON
NO U SHUT
18:40
Huh
According to data.stackexchange.com/meta.stackoverflow/query/647934 only 32 conversations (on non-deleted questions) have ever been moved to chat (11 of those are false positives from a loose query). SO is similarly low at 923. Does that seem right?
0
Q: SEDE query for # of conversations moved to chat seems low

Jason CWhen doing some data analysis I ran a query to find comment conversations that were moved to chat on MSO: SELECT TOP 20000 * FROM Comments c WHERE c.Text LIKE '%moved to chat%' ORDER BY c.CreationDate DESC Granted this presumably does not include deleted questions, but it only retrieve...

user315433
@JasonC The query shows 519 on workplace so I think the counts are right. The feature just isn't used much on SO.
Huh
Fascinating. I thought it would be way higher.
user315433
Most of the time, conversations would be about who downvoted whom, why this is not a code writing service, and where else to ask support/tool-rec questions. Not worth keeping.
user315433
Or an interactive debugging session of IDE crashes.
Still... I was kind of expecting more than 32 on MSO.
Even MSE's only got 42 (48 in query, 6 false positives)
Anonymous
18:56
@JasonC You're only looking for stuff that was manually moved to chat, not automatic, right?
Yeah, where a mod did their "move to chat" magic.
Anonymous
19:07
@JasonC Your query seems to be in the right ballpark. It appears to have been used 58 times on MSO, 8 of those on now-deleted posts.
Anonymous
I'd guess the comments were deleted for the other ~20.
Huh. Interesting. I totally expected to see more of that. I suspect my expectations are biased by that presumably tending to happen on more active / high profile posts that I'm more likely to look at and notice.
Either that or it just stands out more in my memory as an unusual event.
@JeremyBanks Can I quote you in a self-answer?
Anonymous
@JasonC Feel free.
Thanks

I'm not sure the numbers I'm quoting are correct either, because we may have changed the way we logged these events a few years ago.

@SmokeDetector @rene's userscript, great success!
Ugly as sin on ELU's color scheme though, lol.

@JasonC The numbers I gave don't include migrations that took place before late 2014 (and the feature's been here since 2011). Given the MSO:MSE split was early 2014, they're probably close enough for looking at MSO, but the numbers I'm seeing for Stack Overflow are probably further off.
Anonymous
Trying to understand the history of that now. Not sure if I'll have anything more to tell you, but at least it'll be a good exercise in exploring the code base for me.
@JeremyBanks Ah, so you mean, your logging didn't track it pre-2014?
Anonymous
It appears that it should have been logged, but I don't see the older data. I'm probably looking in the wrong place.
Anonymous
19:42
Heh, I need a better tool for looking at Git history.
@JeremyBanks Fwiw I see 737 on SO on or after Jan 1st 2015. 26 on MSO, 4 on MSE (weird).
user315433
Moving comments to chat has only been available since August 2015.
Anonymous
whelp
Really?
Anonymous
That makes sense, then.
Anonymous
19:46
It looks like CMs could do it for a little while before that; that's why I was seeing older data.
Ah yeah, I see a bunch from mid 2014, must have been CM's.
Anonymous
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And now that I look at it the "comments are not for extended discussion" never appears pre 2014.
There's quite a few early "Discussion moved to chat." which I guess was just a common thing to type.
Well, that explains it.
Anonymous
@NormalHuman If I understand that, the system was there since long, but before that it used to come up only the flag dialog. Now it is present in the mod menu as well. — Bhargav Rao ♦ 1 min ago
Anonymous
From looking through awkward Git UIs, it was either implemented in late 2014 or at least it was significantly overhauled at that point. That's the end of my diving for today.
19:55
It still seems weirdly low, I mean
Since August 5th 2015 I see 15 moves on MSO, 401 on SO, and 0 (yeah) on MSE.
Anonymous
@JasonC I see 33 on MSO, 532 on SO, and 11 on MSE in that time period.
Between August 5th 2014 and August 5th 2015 I see 17 on MSO, 505 on SO, and 4 on MSE. Super weird distribution.
@JeremyBanks Seems like the right ballpark then. I'm assuming those were all deleted comments / posts.
I guess it really is that low.
Anonymous
@JasonC There are also cases like this one where Shog replaced the auto-generated comment with his own.
Oh hmm. I'll have to see if I can come up with a way to pull those. Maybe chat links posted by mods. Super annoying that this is not a thing.
Anonymous
Ah. That's unfortunate.
Anonymous
20:10
@JasonC Bhargav is probably as surprised as you.
Heh, I was just thinking that. He also looks like one of move-to-chat's biggest fans, looking at these numbers, lol.
Anonymous
The preservationist in my appreciates it.
Is it weird that it annoys me when people use mathjax for every number in a post?
I'm just glad he didn't throw in $(1)$ and $(2)$.
@JasonC never expected it to be that useful, thanks! \o/
Anonymous
20:30
@JasonC I could imagine myself doing 1234 on Stack Overflow. I kind-of sympathize.
Anonymous
It's not prose, it's an object!
Sure, if it's an object, or a code quote. But typing "My program has 3 errors on line 126" just makes me want to punch you.
Anonymous
although looking at the case you actually linked... "have all 24 now been resolved"... that is more prose.
Anonymous
yeah, okay.
Anonymous
If it's like, "what are the unique properties of the number 2 I want to write a pop-math book?" I'd be more sympathetic.
20:32
Yes. That is a proper use for that.
People go nuts with the `'s sometimes on SO, lol. I wish I could find some of this one guy's edits from a while back, he had a run of absolutely ridiculous formatting edits, throwing backticks and kbd tags around everywhere.
@JasonC Ok, I took the beating and it hurts, still 3 errors on line 126. Punching me is not the solution ...
@rene Punching me is not the solution... -- I feel like we need more data.
Maybe they can add "Do you believe most questions on SO can also be solved through violence?" to the 2018 survey.
I'm in for that one
A bunch of thugs with "Tavern" t-shirts showing up on people's doorsteps after they post a question, such a great image.
By "thugs" I mean an imposing collection of various mammals and small items; a giraffe, a flower, a cat, a few disembodied heads, some large molecules, possibly a space invader.
What is apparently an IoT trumpet.
