12:11 AM
Sigh

Sigh

I'm trying to find a better color for the walls in my apartment; so I've been looking around for pictures.
But the more I see things like homestratosphere.com/living-rooms-with-hardwood-floors the more it sets in that I'll never be able to make my place look nice.
Like
I want that ^

gtg ... btw. the base of my unhappiness about the situation are especially real link only answers e.g. pure yahoo-links. I flagged those as I started on SO as VLQ and got declines and learned they should be NAA, meanwhile it seems to be VLQ again (while there does not seem to be an agreement ) on other sites seem to be seen different anyway an site wide standard would be nice.

user202362
cream/beige is commonly used

@JasonC Where's the AP? I want good wifi.

user202362
12:14 AM
but there are probably countless shades of cream/beige

Hidden in little cubbies behind paintings.

@JasonC That looks nice... oh it's not your apartment. :P

user202362
personally I prefer lighter shade, because it would make your room look brighter

Is where I'd put it.

@JasonC But then you can't monitor the beautiful activity lights :(

user202362
12:16 AM
but not too light, because you want some contrast with your white skirting/cornice (assume they are white)

user202362

user202362
does your apartment have as many windows?

@Telkitty Better than a mac! *hides

12:17 AM
The problem is, I don't want my place to look so ... brown. But I have light hardwood floors and red/brown/black furniture.

@JasonC - In my opinion, find the main color you want, choose a dichotomy of that, and then go about using your 16 color set to choose what to highlight, what to gloss over, and what to transition with.

And theoretically something nice with multiple colors and accents could work, but my place is very featureless. Lots of large walls and empty space.

paletton.com is a great resource for color balancing

@TravisJ Yeah, maybe some grayish-purples. But I think it'd be too much on unbroken walls.
Oh let's see.

I find that pegboard hung with loops of cable and various utensils works well for dressing up bare walls.

12:19 AM
Well
One of my walls is full of milk crate cubbies, screws sticking out randomly with tools, and shelves made of old NYDOT traffic barriers.
So that kind of counts.
I have half a mind to put some fake wooden beams across the ceiling just to give something to add accents to.

user202362

user202362
this is the color I have chosen for the walls of the new tiny house I am building

@Mooseman Pretty much.
@Telkitty I like it. But your window:wall ratio is higher than mine.

@Telkitty Your outlet looks funny

user202362
12:22 AM
there is only 1 window in each room, except for the living room

user202362
@Mooseman cough cough ... to be done :p

@Telkitty I just meant I'm used to American outlets:

Huh
So I was gonna take a picture of one of my walls to illustrate, and I think I figured out the problem.

@JasonC As opposed to these:

scream mask-style

12:25 AM
My place is just too ... cluttered. It's the opposite of the problem I thought I had. No matter what I paint it it feels... wrong.

Australian power sockets are cooler looking

Their toilets could use some work though

Cabinets and shelves. That's the first thing I need to tackle. And make them consistent. Which raises the question of what color to stain them.
But I have almost zero closet space. This is all boiling back down to: I need to buy a real house.

@JasonC - Either a light green, a beige, or a dark red
If your floor is light brown
Of course, if your problem is that you need a new house because you can't make your cupboards match your hardwood then that is for sure #firstworldproblems

12:28 AM
rep capped stack yesterday on CR \o/

You think a light green? The floor is oak with a light stain. The furniture is red and dark brown.
Huh
That could be nice. Maybe with white trim.
And a white ceiling.
Like a grayish green.

@JasonC - Yeah, it might actually be more of a blue actually
Let me get you an example

user202362
I used grayish green on doors once, it worked. Then I tried it on some other doors else where, it backfired because it's a different shade & it just looked awful.

I could make the furniture, besides the couches... I dunno maybe a walnut stain or something. I've been using "sedona red" on new furniture but I could switch to something more neutral.
@TravisJ Yeah... that's actually pretty close to my favorite color, too.

user202362
can you stain something that's already stained?

12:33 AM
@JasonC - This is the set of colors I would suggest for a "Golden Oak" color paletton.com/#uid=70C0u0kkEreaTGRgfvyp2nOssiS

Or even like a:
Maybe a little cooler though.
@TravisJ Oh I like it.

I like those types of setup, large depth of color to choose from

@Mooseman Haha LH! hahaha…

user202362
If I were you, I would go with cream/beige for wall paint. It's the safest option. You can get better colors for your walls, but the failure rate for getting the wrong color is 99%.

Oh man I'm excited to go paint shopping now.

12:35 AM
@bjb568 HACKSSSSSSS

@JasonC :D

@Telkitty I have beige now; well "navajo white". It's awful. It's just brown, everywhere.

@JasonC I like grey. The grey of cold, hard concrete.

@Telkitty I once saw a room 3 walls beige, 1 wall green. Felt... weird.
All walls should be painted wall-colored.

My downstairs neighbor does the color-per-wall thing. Like, primary colors on every wall. It's hideous.
I don't understand how that happened. I have to avert my eyes when she opens the door.

12:37 AM
@bjb568 you'll love prison, then

I still might put false beams in.

Ooh yas.

Ooh nos.

With the exception of the bathroom, all rooms should be white and identical. There shall be minimal furniture.
The bathroom, however, can be very decorated and textured, for it is a room of reflection.

user202362
@Mooseman One of my friends are into multi-colored walls, but I am not talented enough to tell what color combinations really work. I stick to cream/beige since it has never failed me & I helped out in quite a few renovation projects for my parents and myself.

12:40 AM
I've seen some gorgeous places along those lines bjb. I don't like the ultra-modern look myself.

... Mental reflection and mirrors too.

Right haha. Maybe a recessed projector in the back of the room?

I once went to a hotel, I think in Sierra Nevada, where the shower had a bumpy stone floor and two shower heads. Amazing. I also like glass there because SHINEY.

Yeah; that'd be cool. Like a nice little projector cubby up by the ceiling. At a (much more awesome) apartment I used to live in we bounced the projector off a mirror to get some extra distance.
Ha

Um, are we talking about an apartment now or a large-scale commercial movie theater?

All I require in a hotel room is an awesome shower.
An apartment / small-scale non-commercial movie theater.
