On the twelfth name of Amelanchier,
My true love gave to me:
Twelve sarvisberries bearing,
Eleven juneberries juning,
Ten wild-plums plumbing,
Nine sarvēs serving,
Eight shadbushes bushing,
Seven shadwoods wooding,
Six shadblows blowing,
FIVE SERVICEBERRIES!
Four wild pears,
Three saskatoons,
Two sugarplums,
And a truly tasty chuckley pear tree.

yay?
> have a number of friends who are vegetarians for no reason other than they decided they wanted to be which, in my opinion, is far less sacrosanct than religious reasons
because obviously having your personal identity equivalent to a crowd mentality makes it much more respectable

Apparently some belief systems are less respectable than others.

… and constructing your identity from first principles is just morally reprehensible — who do you think you are to process the world rationally?

Gahd, he posts these scoring guidelines that are incredibly pedantic.
YOU MUST DECLARE CLASS CONSTANTS WITH public static FINAL (THE FINAL IS TOTALLY IMPORTANT) AND USE new MyClass(MyClass.TYPE_CEE_SHOUTY_SNAKE_CASE_INT_CONSTANT_MAGIC_NUMBER) instead of new MyClass('C').

@bjb568isceilingkat Whoa class name starting with small letter?

Oh, forgive me for I have sinned.

I mean, sure, it does make sense to have some guidelines that you abide by, and OO is a thing that people do… which does involve encapsulation… but dammit I don't care about encapsulation and if I know something is a String I want to do myThing.field = "new value" without obfuscating how simple setting a string is with a damn setter method as if I don't know that it's really a String "under the hood".

In community building, the third place (or third space) is the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place"). Examples of third places would be environments such as cafes, clubs or parks. In his influential book The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg (1989, 1991) argues that third places are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement, and establishing feelings of a sense of place. Robert Putnam addressed issues related to third place in Bowling Alone: America's Declining Social Capital (1995, 2000). 2...

A heap overflow is a type of buffer overflow that occurs in the heap data area. Heap overflows are exploitable in a different manner to that of stack-based overflows. Memory on the heap is dynamically allocated by the application at run-time and typically contains program data. Exploitation is performed by corrupting this data in specific ways to cause the application to overwrite internal structures such as linked list pointers. The canonical heap overflow technique overwrites dynamic memory allocation linkage (such as malloc meta data) and uses the resulting pointer exchange to overwrite a program...

@Shog9 is it now a feature that we can see User History events about the user being warned about a ban: stackoverflow.com/posts/34470731/timeline or is that too much info leaked?

@rene That must be a gub.

Maybe, it can also be helpful for the users that are responding to meta posts...

I'm not overly bothered by that, @Shadow: it's the ONLY user-history entry available, and arguably relevant to the post. It also adds a bit of transparency to the otherwise-opaque warning system, which... Could use a bit of sunlight. — Shog9 ♦ Dec 23 at 18:04

IOW, it's one of those things that was in the moderator timeline and wasn't explicitly filtered out because... Who cares?

@Shog9 OK, I'm fine with that :D

A: One day China just suddenly stops all exports. What would happen to the world?

The NatePrices would skyrocket. Manufacturing would ramp up like nuts. In the USA, there would be more anxiety than real harm. Cost of living would spike for a bit, which would cause most problems. We are dependent on foreign oil, though, and rare earths, so electronics would rocket up in price the most...

Having no new tablets available for ten years would be painful but it wouldn't cause a mass extinction. The kids, starved of electronics, suddenly deciding to have some fun on the streets instead might have unforeseen consequences, however. — Jan Dvorak 3 hours ago
Reads to me as an anti-tech circlejerk.
Something as large as China effectively disappearing from the global economy will cause short term economic issues everywhere, probably riots and chaos, and progress of humanity will be set back by several decades.
