5:00 PM
Otherwise, yeah, I know what you mean

Well, I can see I made a good decision skipping that one then. :P

Oh by the gods, it was horrid

Aren't we about due for a global rep recalc?

I gave that phone to said sister in law with the 5 year old because she needed a smartphone when I got my iPhone 3GS 32GB white (the last white model iPhone???) and even she never got it hooked up on her plan :p
@PopularDemand don't say that!!! I need my 3k :(
I'm kind of looking at the Samsung Focus wondering how it's going to fare

@PopularDemand - do recalcs ever result in an increase in rep?
if not, no

5:02 PM
if you lost rep on a question that was later deleted, I think you would get it back.

if you get downvoted a lot maybe!

So, like I was saying, the answer to my earlier question is "no, and we never will be"....

would it if the answers I got only downvoted on were deleted? Then if so, sure, but only because I should gain ... :p

If only carriers were inter-compatible like...everywhere else...I could just buy whatever I wanted.

@TimStone Yeppers, I wish they were ... would make life so much easier
So, speaking of carriers, funny story this:

5:03 PM
@AidenBell Yeah, I get like 2 rep back if we do a recalc

Eh, companies keep shoveling out new phones so fast... just wait a week and you'll probably have one you like available.

@AidenBell I'll tell the mods you want your rep refreshed at any rate.

Oh Google..

Apparently I can't get ATT to sell me fiber to a building that's 4 blocks away because they wouldn't be managing the endpoints in the building

"55th Anniversary: Rosa Parks refuses to move"
There's not a better way of phrasing that?

5:04 PM
It's really hard to keep up with all that; maybe after I have the funds to get a smartphone myself.

@radp - yea thatd be great. All I wanted for Christmas was a more accurate reflection of my SO neglect in my rep chart. Thank you sincerely.

@drachenstern Did you explain to them that that's probably a good thing?
2

@drachenstern But that's the whole reason you bought that house!

@PopularDemand it's an apartment building :p
@TimStone I did actually try, and I even got them to take my number and promise to have a local guy follow up with me :|

@drachenstern Even better. Get some neighbors to march down there with you.

5:05 PM
all I want is FTTP from the ATT building to the apartment building. That's it. Turn on the bandwidth and leave me to my own machinations.

I'll take it that hasn't happened yet. :P

@drachenstern Oh, wait, are we doing realistic suggestions for this one? Bye, then.

@TimStone You have such prescience

@PopularDemand I hope not, I was going to extend the deal to him that I gave @rchern about patching into the FiOS here with a really long cable.

the lady on the phone yesterday kept suggesting T1's
I was like "seriously? I want more bandwidth than any 1.4mbps and I'm turning down DSL cos 6mbps is cramping my style, are you dense?"

5:08 PM
@TimStone Now that's what I'm talking about. What happened to this room, man? We're all being helpful and friendly and whatnot now?

the landlord likes the idea of fiber to the building being something she can just have managed for her tenants, it being a building of loft like apartments and a little more upscale ... I would love to split something on the order of gbps fiber between 70 users

@PopularDemand I think it's the fallout from the long weekend

@TimStone We need Shog and Diago back.

Good times, good times.
What's Shog up to anyway? Diago is off doing work, for some reason.
looks to the left at the 95 pending code errors Oh right, I'm supposed to be doing work too.

5:25 PM
Ola

hola

'Ello

I love that whenever I come in here I get greeted
it makes me feel so special

We try.

@Chacha102 Hello
Anyone heard of the game Zen Bound 2 ?

5:30 PM
resists making joke wrt Chacha102

@Chacha102 bah, it's just 'cos WalMart wasn't hiring, but we needed to stay in shape ...

Does anyone know why IE8 adds random height stuff inline on divs and gets it totally wrong?
It's a div, I don't want it fixed height ffs

quirksmode should have something to say on it
I know I've seen something on it but can't remember now what or when

@Chacha102 You are the owner and sole proprietor. Kinda makes you a Tavern VIP.

Saying "hello" every time you join probably helps as well

5:36 PM
Josh has 10k messages in the tavern .. gaaahhh...

until you change your name to Norm, then it'll be different ...
oh sweet, I have almost 2k tavern posts :D

3.6k here

2.6k for me

hurry, everybody! :p ... also, rchern 13k for chat.MSO
I'm sure she's in more than just the Tav tho ;)

Has anyone built a leaderboard for chat yet?

5:39 PM
@drachenstern at least 4k of those are just: oy

Im the owner of 13 channels..

you're almost basic cable.
2

@Fosco We should ask the chat gods how many messages consist of just oy or some variation thereof.

@AidenBell You can check whether your rep would increase or decrease in a recalc: stackoverflow.com/reputation

I'd lose 37 rep.

5:41 PM
@TimStone <nazi-sneer-tone>thinking of using a regex are we?<thwack/><thwack/>Now you have two problems, don't you?</nazi-sneer-tone>

I really don't want a rep recalc...

rep cap was exceeded on 11 days /fistpump

@Chacha102 My rep was recalculated a few hours after I hit 10k, and it fell back to 9.9k
I was less than pleased

I've had 10k for months, and I really should be about 1k under where I am currently
I'd like to see Jeff Atwoods rep recalced

@MichaelMrozek Tactical downvoting has nothing on tactical recalc requesting.
3

5:44 PM
I'd only lose 1 rep on SO, but 150 in a recalc on MSO. ):

@PopularDemand starred if only for the tonguetwisterness

@PopularDemand Because the worst thing in the world is being exactly where you are suppose to be...

Well, it's time to fire up the Users page for the daily check of who's just broken 2k, 3k and 10k....

on Meta?

@PopularDemand I can feel the evil flooding back into the room. It's invigorating.

5:46 PM
@PopularDemand You're a terrible person. I approve
2

16 reputation recalculation requests sent to team@stackoverflow.com

You don't even need to, just tactically upvote them and you'll trigger the vote detector
They'll be like "wow, somebody really likes me!", and then suddenly they'll have 1k less rep

It's a double whammy

@MichaelMrozek No, that's step two, for people who are just a hair under 2k, 3k or 10k.

@drachenstern 13K?

5:48 PM
Heh, isn't Diago like 30 rep shy of 10k on SU?

@rchern You have 13.4K messages

Ooh, he made it. 10010.

He's gone binary!

Congrats @Diago even though you won't ever see this!

REP RECALC TIME!!!

5:48 PM
Oh, messages.

I think we've illustrated why letting users do recalcs is a very bad idea

seriously? who starred that?

@rchern I'm not sure, but it made me laugh at the randomness

I'll clear them

Q: Self-instigated rep recalc

Jon SkeetIn a few situations, it's nice to be able to get a rep recalc "on demand." In the past, I've simply pinged Marc Gravell about this, but it would be good not to have to bother him. As an example, this morning I received lots of "dodgy" votes early in the day. They were removed later on, but then ...

5:50 PM
@rchern who starred what? nm.

Marc appears to be the target of many people's bugging. Lucky him. :P

Q: Allow 10k users to recalculate their own rep

Juan Manuel Possible Duplicate: Self-instigated rep recalc I'm an optimization junkie, and sometimes I like to delete negative answers to reclaim that little lost rep, and I don't want to bother moderators to request a recalculation. I admit it's not high priority and there isn't an actual proble...

Is this the replacement room for stackoverflow or am I in the wrong place?

@rchern I don't know if you saw, but Marc said he wasn't sure why the input gets cleared when you click retry...so we'll never know. :P
@Default Replacement room?

@TimStone Hmm, ok. Hold please.

5:54 PM
@Default I'm pretty sure you're in the wrong place.

@Default Were you looking for chat.stackoverflow.com ?

taps foot confusedly
Ah, now I understand.
Very good.

(:

/blames waffles

5:54 PM
@PopularDemand That message is relevant to everyone that ever enters this room...

@Chacha102 A winner is me!

because if you come in here, you were probably looking for chat.stackoverflow..

Q: Aesthetic issue: Negative vote counts should use Minus Sign (U+2212) instead of Hyphen-Minus (U+002D)

Tsuyoshi ItoCurrently the Stack Exchange server uses Hyphen-Minus (U+002D) as the negative sign. However, in many fonts, this character is designed as a hyphen and therefore the bar is placed too low to use as minus sign. To represent negative numbers, it is suitable to use Minus Sign (U+2212). I am not s...

Jeff is going to love that one. :P

Oy. I was just switching tabs to link to that post.

Popular: yes! thanks :)

5:58 PM
Hah

@TimStone I gave your post the [important] tag, because it is obviously [important]

@Default No problem.
Although we're programmers too.
So, if you have a question, we might know something. Perhaps. If it's Wednesday.

@PopularDemand You're a programmer?

@Chacha102 On Wednesdays
Which it is today, so yes.

6:00 PM
@Popular: well.. why does some programmers feel that void main() is correct?

@Default Because they don't feel the need to supply a return value.

@PopularDemand I only know that I know nearly nothing. I'm told that is a good thing to know. I wouldn't know, I'm not sure I even know that much in the first place...

@drachenstern I've said pretty much that exact thing, at some other point in time.

I know too much, I'm just not convinced any of it is relevant or otherwise useful.

Why do you feel the void main() is incorrect?

6:02 PM
according to sbi it's wrong :)

14159->13618 would be my recalc

If sbi told you to go jump off a bridge...

Yes!

void main() seems wrong because main() returns an int whether you tell it to or not

ah...
blame it on Java..

6:03 PM
@Michael: you don't have to return a value.

and look at muffin cat

@PopularDemand I imagine most of those in this room would say that they have said that, or at least, I hope so

@Default Yes, but it still returns a value either way, you just don't have to explicitly type return 0;

oh.

I thought a void that returned was valid, just that the return was discarded, whereas a eg int main() that didn't return was invalid

6:04 PM
@MichaelMrozek If that comes up on my SCJP exam, I owe you a beer.
I've occasionally used return; but never return 0; or return 1; in those cases.
Were you asking about Java in the first place, though, @Default?

@PopularDemand Isn't that Java? Java's main is always void, you don't return an error code

nope, C++

I'd still say blame it on Java..

@MichaelMrozek that's just dumb, and it's yet another reason I don't use java...

I noted sbis response to it here stackoverflow.com/questions/4324763/…

6:06 PM
@MichaelMrozek I wasn't referring to main() anymore.

@drachenstern You call System.exit(), which returns an error code from the runtime.

@drachenstern Sorry :). You can do System.exit(err) if you need it
@PopularDemand Well, the magic auto-returning-0 thing is C++-specific, and only for main()

@MichaelMrozek If that had come up on my SCJP exam, I would have found you and stolen a beer from you.

@PopularDemand Fair

well that sounds like a load of bollocks, this call System.exit(err) if you need to _return_ an err

6:08 PM
Java will silently call super() even if you don't tell it to, where that's applicable.

@drachenstern Well, it makes a bit more sense when you consider that it's the runtime returning the error code on your behalf anyway, not your actual program.
System.exit() just proxies to Runtime.getRuntime().exit() anyway, heh.

@TimStone so the compiler and language should be allowed to get away with syntactic sugar in almost every other regards (see :287114 for more evidence) and yet, it won't treat void main() { return 0; } as void main() { System.exit(0); } ... how utterly RIDICULOUS ... No? Again, perhaps it's just me ...
Of course, I write code that pretty much only compiles down to MSIL, so who am I to moan?

Java is very, very limited in its syntactic sugar. :P

@drachenstern It's pretty rare for Java programs to use error codes for stuff, so they probably weren't too concerned
Java programs also tend to not end when main() ends, they've usually spawned other threads and made windows

@MichaelMrozek is that a failing of the language or the programmers?

6:15 PM
@drachenstern Well, if you're running in an application server or something..

@MichaelMrozek >.> ... why does that just sound wrong? "The death of the parent thread usually doesn't impact the running state of children threads on java applications" ...

Neither, Java programs just don't tend to be CLIs

@MichaelMrozek I still want my GUI programs to toss an error if they commit harikari

@drachenstern They probably show you an error dialog and keep running

@MichaelMrozek then that wouldn't be committing harikari would it? :p

6:22 PM
@drachenstern What is your programming doing abnormally that a runtime exception isn't thrown, but you're able to return an error code from main? :P

@TimStone Touche
@TimStone This is why I don't write runtime frameworks for other programmers
don't you love when your boss gives you a bugticket with just a shade less onscreen data than he could've that doesn't show you a repro-able problem, and repro-ing off his given data doesn't repro the problem?
Unless you are the boss, in which case, why would you not just give a full screen cap, and instead crop to something that doesn't show the whole picture? Bits is cheapz

He wanted to keep you on your toes, make you guess your way to the problem, and then figure out the solution.

but if I can't repro it ... then to me it doesn't exist. NO BUG! Ticket DENIED!

Hahah

I'll stick it at the end to deal with later if I can't repro it, with a screenshot from me showing no repro and a note as to why I didn't fix it

6:27 PM
Partial screenshots: UNSUPPORTED

lmao
I wish I could get away with that

It is really annoying when people try to guess what the issue is and only give you the information that they think is relevant.

@drachenstern You kids today are so wasteful. Why, I remember when we had to take our bits to the kitchen sink when we were done with them so we could wash them and use them again....

@TimStone yep, that's why if an error gets thrown I have a framework that grabs it, logs the stacktrace and related info, and then stores it for me later, and I can find the error when they didn't even know it blew up
@PopularDemand I'm gonna guess you're younger than me, and I ain't that old

@drachenstern You're probably right. But then the joke wouldn't work.

6:29 PM
@PopularDemand unless the profee is right, in which case I'm wrong

Ha, profiles. I think I have one that says 85, one that says 65, one that says 15....

@PopularDemand oh I'll play Four Yorkshiremen with no problemo
So that was rather anticlimactic

Hello

@drachenstern As if you could best me. Back when I was your age, there were only two Yorkshiremen.

@PopularDemand Oy, when I was growing up, we used to have to make the broomstick the Yorkshireman, as there weren't any actual Yorkshiremen yet to have an old one of

6:36 PM
@drachenstern Not so; I was the original Yorkshireman.

Oy, and when I was young, you weren't a twinkle in yer daddy's eye, and there you have it
What would've been acceptable would've been "Aye, you had a broomstick, we only had straw, which we used to sweep the floor between our teeth"
or "You make me sick, you and your talk of broomsticks, why, when we were wee lads, we were lucky to see a broomstick, much less dream of having one of our own"

You had teeth? When I was young, humans hadn't evolved those yet!

Oy, evolution, what a thing to DREAM of. You seemed to think you were heady stuff then, eh? We were amorphous blobs, and happy to be so!

I'm not sure who's winning this argument; possibly you're both losing

@MichaelMrozek You are familiar with the Four Yorkshiremen sketch, oui?

6:39 PM
@MichaelMrozek "possibly"?

@MichaelMrozek This seems most likely.

I walk away from my computer for 10 minute and THIS is what you start ranting about?

@drachenstern: Im not

@drachenstern Oh, Monty Python. That explains the lack of humor
2

@Chacha102 lol
My thoughts exactly.

6:40 PM

@Chacha102 I was going to act surprised too, until I realized I wasn't.

first youtube link
> The sketch was originally written and performed for the 1967 British television comedy series At Last the 1948 Show
Quoting Wikipedia there
for the videoless or soundless (as I am)

lol

What do you guys do for an email sig? Anything?

hey
where do I download Rchern's user scripts?

6:48 PM
see the SO javascript room

@drachenstern: workrelated or private?

whoops, stupid "right click to copy" didn't copy"

testing

6:50 PM
I'm lost.

@Default in regards to? We can only draw a map if we're allowed to use FHCs

Grr..

@Chacha102, hang on. I need to do a pull.

This was built on Windows wasn't it?

So if you wait you'll get a nice new version.

6:50 PM
lmao

(Not that the old one is broken of course...)

@drachenstern: you asked about signatures and started to link to other rooms :P

@rchern Does that version have Mac Support?
for the navigation

If your Mac keyboard returns retarded keycodes, that's not my fault. :P
My Mac keyboard doesn't ;)

^^

6:51 PM
@Default I need to put in a .sig in my outlook, others were asking for links

But no, I guess I can look into fixing that too.

No, but Control -> Up/Down gives me my spaces menu...

Ah..

@Default do you use IRC or other fast paced chats much?

Well I was gonna think of fixing it..

6:52 PM
@drachenstern: nope. so: workrelated or my private signature?

@Default work ... for private I use gmail and have a nice long block of funny chat quotes

personally, I don't use a sig.. and i usually close with just my first name, in lowercase.

funny to me anyways

private is just the name but the workrelated is the one with to all recipients.. this is confidential.. legal.. uhm.. let me see if I can find it

at work, I just have Thank You, and full name proper-case.

6:54 PM
The contents of this message and any attachments to it are confidential and may be legally privileged. If you have received this message in error, you should delete it from your system immediately and advise the sender. To any recipient of this message within <company>, unless otherwise stated you should consider this message and attachments as "<company> CONFIDENTIAL
good to have, if you need to blame someone who sends information outside the company

So I find that generally on my first email or two to a person I try and have the appropriate contact info so they can at least have it somewhere, but otherwise I normally just close with either "Cole" or "C" since they already have my "from" in the email header

@Chacha102 If you want to provide an alternate to Ctrl, I don't see why that would be an issue. Otherwise I think I have something I wanted to add the script, so if you'd rather just tell me what key works for you I'll add it in sometime today.

But this is going to a customer, so I figure a full on sig isn't a big deal anyways

oh.. so I have <My Name> <address to office> <that stuff above>

@TimStone Command is generally the alternative

6:56 PM
Hrm. GitExtensions is frozen in the middle of my push.

Yeah I'm not putting address to office on an email :p ;)
ok people, stepping out for "lunch" shouldbe back

we do :)
lunch? now?
its 8 PM

@Default 1400h US Eastern.

(what are time zones?)

@Chacha102 Oh, duh. :)

6:57 PM
@Default so silly of me :p
1300 CT

Does anyone know how to export Eclipse error/warning settings?

@TimStone Use more jQuery

lol
