@SPArchaeologist They posted a question using a new account to ask what had been done about finding the culprits. I answered in a somewhat vague way, as we can't really reveal what we're doing when something is ongoing like this, but rest assured we do whatever is needed to maintain the availability of our sites for legitimate users. They revealed themselves as the culprit, I deleted their question, which turned out to be an attention grab and then ugliness ensued.

@ShadowWizard Not really. There are dumps available of known tor exit nodes, but .. accuracy isn't that great due to the instability of some and others coming up.

When using a properly configured browser bundle, so that headers are sent in just the right way, there's no way to tell other than looking for 'tor' or 'torserver' in the reverse PTR record, which is expensive. Plus, abuse accounts for a tiny percentage of traffic coming from Tor, they just make the biggest asses out of themselves, so they get noticed more.
