@Catija I think holisitically though, that it came at the same time as the data dump drama - and likewise the layoffs reduce trust
If this happened in 'better' days it would have a better chance of success, rather than being seen as 'the other shoe'

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog That pattern looks like it's already caught by Potentially bad keyword in answer and Potentially bad keyword in body Append -force to the command word(s) if you really want to add the pattern you provided.
...
THAT TAG! IT DOES NOT MEAN WHAT YOU THINK IT MEANS

1 hour later…
03:46
@VLAZ I have such a script around somewhere - it loads the tags on each post first before applying changes, so as to avoid the need to pre-load all affected questions. But another sensible approach, and one I've used for very large and complicated operations, is to use SQL to generate rewrite requests based on post data - the downside of doing this as a normal user is the lack of access to current (up to the minute) data; using SEDE for this is likely to corrupt some posts.
Realistically, avoiding rate limits is trivial - just pick a sensible delay and, upon hitting a rate limit, back off for a minute or so. All of this can be done very efficiently with scripts except for the bit @Catija mentions: avoiding absolutely trashing the front page on quiet sites.
@Shog9 that's a hard problem short of having something that simulates trickling edits in over lunchbreaks :D
It's not worth solving, IMHO. The few times I've cared, I just record the visible questions first and then re-bump them upon completion.
Not perfect, but nothing is.
If you NEED say, 10k edits... it's gonna take days for that script to run. Might as well just wave bye-bye to any use of the homepage for that period. For a few dozen to a few hundred edits - stuff that isn't worth finding someone to use the built-in tools for - script away and deal with the fallout (which is to say, communicate what you're planning well ahead of time)
Whatever you do, don't be stupid and use the delete + lock + edit trick to avoid bumping. There are worse things than a trashed homepage.
@Shog9 A few dramas ago, we were thinking about it
Most of the (former?) SU regulars run their own servers
and I think folks realised I literally spent a year of lunch breaks clearing out a 1000+ entry tag :D
3-4 a day I think
04:02
@Mithical It’s all your fault. Everything.
The blue light on the radiator is bothering me in the darkness. I blame Mithical for its existance.
Speaking of canned tuna, it’s only acceptable when in oil or gel. It’s super dry if in water.
That reminds me; I haven’t made tuna salads in probably 2 years.
04:25
@Catija I still don’t understand why you never took the chance of building a separate path to privileges, and afterwards remove some of the privilege unlocks granted by reputation.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact ... Uh... wha? You say that like I had the option to do it.
@Catija Data has been interprated rather weirdly by SE before, so simply saying it’s for research, and that an analysis will follow, doesn’t necessarily convince people here.
@Catija Yes, I do.
Oh. Spevacus brought it up. I didn’t read that yet.
OK... um... I didn't.
@Catija I don’t follow the logic here. Why did that have to be the first step? Possibly, you have already explained that in an MSE post? I still remember talking a tiny bit with you about granting privileges independently of reputation, back in March or April, but I didn’t really get too much agreement with that. Well, most of the ones of us in the conversation wanted that.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Because you see it in the order that I was looking at it. I've been talking about it with users and complaining about it on meta for a long time. Philippe is totally aware of that... the idea to change the rep to vote came suddenly from much higher up the chain. It wasn't even in the scope of my plan based on what I'd been talking about with y'all.
04:37
@Catija Ah. So you weren’t planning to involve the reputation, but rather develop a sideway path to privileges based on other criteria, then the CEO made a requirement that the company was going to lower the reputation requirements for voting, which interfered with the actual plan?
Oh, damn, I’m confusing myself here.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I mean, I don't know where the push came from, to be honest. My plans were very broad - find substitutes for reputation to grant privileges so that more people who want to can do stuff without needing to post content. Because I wanted to create little projects that would be easy for a dev to build for me, I was focused only on stuff that I knew would be easy to change/support because it already has review built into it. Editing and closing/reopening, essentially.
@Catija Right. Thanks. Although, flags are also reviewed.
Flags? Wha?
@Feeds Zero trust: check. Zero problems: not at all.
@Catija R/A, spam and NAA flags, as well as comment flags, currently require review by moderators (well, peer review for R/A and spam).
Non-moderators are capable of handling this stuff themselves.
04:47
... sure? You understand my list of two things were examples, not exhaustive, right... and I now have no actual work to do, so... convincing me that we should have been looking at flags is kinda... pointless?
Ah, maybe it wouldn’t be so easy to change, due to the codebase.
@Catija No, you said «essentially», which made me assume you only meant those two.
@Catija I’m not really trying to convince you to have it changed… Look at my username… I honestly don’t care what happens here anymore. Actually, I like dumpster fires, so with my lack of care now, there’s actually entertainment to find these days.
I... guess. yeah. But there was no actual plan built, and the goal in my head wasn't really to take things off the mods' plates, so I wouldn't have actually thought of flag handling for that (possibly silly) reason. Also, handling flags isn't a "privilege" on the privilege page, so again, my brain wouldn't have thought of it necessarily.
It’s more that I find the topic interesting. Although, I’ll fall asleep when it gets boring.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I mean... I appreciate that, I just feel like I'm getting grilled about something rather than having a relaxing chat about what might have been. Maybe it's just delivery but it feels like I'm being put a bit on the defensive instead of just having a conversation.
@Catija Grill! Grill! I’m a cannibal! I need meat! :P No, I’m not trying to grill you. ;) Converse along.
04:53
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Like, if you had phrased this as "did you consider taking some of the flag handling off the mods' hands?" instead of the way you did, it would have felt more like you were interested in my thinking rather than pointing out something I missed.
@Catija Eeek, why are you grilling me?
I'm a Texan, that's what we do?
True. That’s what they say in Eastern Norway. «Helt Texas» = «completely crazy».
Not going to argue with that.
Although, are you sure it’s you, and not the sun, that’s at fault?
04:58
One of my annual projects (remembering that Q4 is actually Q1 of 2024), was to outline a project to remove (or change) barriers to participation on the platform. The end result shouldn't be a free-for-all where anyone can do anything but a thoughtful way of understanding that reputation isn't a good indication of experience with a tool and that it would be better to find other ways to grant those privileges without relying on reputation.
This would have two benefits - people who'd never used a privilege wouldn't get unfettered access just because they earn a ton of rep and people without a bunch of rep would be able to unlock privileges by showing they could use the feature correctly.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Smart Texans don't go outside in the sun. We stay inside in the AC and avoid going outside as much as possible.
@Catija That we can agree on. I kinda like how Codidact went at it, however, the traffic there is currently too low for it to be taken advantage of, yet.
@Catija I assume your house has wheels? Or maybe some jet engines?
My very nerdy way of doing it would be to create a skill tree system where people could do tasks and take quizzes to unlock the different privileges - possibly more than we have now (by breaking the privileges up somewhat)... some of the skills would build on top of others (like tree branches)... and we could create a new system that would have a default module for the subjects but would allow customization for each site.
Yes... that's right. I want to create a quest system to unlock skills so you can build your user profile like you're building out your mage in some RPG.
... just, instead of building a mage, you'd be unlocking skills that align with someone who wants to curate... there could even be a series of skills recommended for someone who was interested in being a mod, so they could actually learn about tools and better understand what mods do prior to nominating. :D
And someone's candidate score would become just... showing people what parts of the tree they'd completed.
:P Catija, the secret game developer.
I've been playing RPGs like Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) since I was little.
05:09
I spent a silly amount of time playing Maplestory about 10 years ago until they stopped letting you play in a VM (since I have macs and the client always was PC only).
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact It's top down like Zelda, if that's what you mean.
I had this on my NES and it was amazing.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, titled Dragon Warrior IV when initially localized to North America, is a role-playing video game, the fourth installment of the Dragon Quest video game series developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix, and the first of the Zenithian Trilogy. It was originally released for the Famicom on 11 February 1990 in Japan. A North American NES version followed in October 1992, and would be the last Dragon Quest game localized and published by Enix's Enix America Corporation subsidiary prior to its closure in November 1995, as well as the last Dragon Quest game to...
When they released I and II on GameBoy, I was super excited and it was fascinating to me that they fit both games in one tiny cartridge.
@Catija Yeah. I mostly don’t enjoy 2D and fixed-camera-angle games. Some are fine, though.
The music was great.
And I think it's maybe where the slime monster originates but I'm not sure.
That is quite past my knowledge.
I mostly grew up on Ratchet & Clank and Sims 2, as well as casually playing other games every now and then. They didn’t really make as much of an impact, though. Well, World of Tanks, did.
I also loved the mobile version of Settlers.
Anyway. I’m far past my intended sleeping schedule, and I’m very tired by now, so I should get some sleep. :)
05:20
@VLAZ hmm. Offline. With a brick in a sock
Oh god. I am going to the new place. My dad literally asked if I packed food and water 😅
@JourneymanGeek Replace the brick with a can of spam. Call it "poetic justice"
@VLAZ I do not wish for some poor pigs sacrifice to the altar of mechanically seperated meat products to be taken for granted 😁
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I think I played a lot of Sims 2... but it blended with The Sims and I'm trying to remember if I liked Sims 2 at this point. I never liked that you always have to make the Sims somewhat social... it seemed lame :P I don't need to be social. I also played a lot of Civ IV and Roller Coaster Tycoon 2... I tried 3 but it was terrible. :D
06:10
@JourneymanGeek you go camping?
No. Just the new apartment.
It is far and vaguely in the middle of a construction site ....
And by far I mean an hour by public transport 😅

@Catija Quite fond of the start of Dragon Quest 3.

@Chicken no way, egg can't just explode!

@JourneymanGeek already done.
@SPArcheon is are you mad? an option?
@JourneymanGeek you have "never". I was trying to see if I could share the link but it is individual.

@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry the only way
09:47
@Oded oh, where are your parents? I'm in a pretty much safe areas, in the center, and trying to keep the routine as much as possible.
@Oded :)
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry Tel-Aviv & Jerusalem. Not really close to the action... but being far away...
@Oded yeah, and even there there's a risk, few people injured in the village where my mother and sister live. ;(
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry nowhere is 100% safe, I know.
Time to make lunch, today we have extra guest, wish me luck! :D
Been thinking about Yaakov too - not sure where he lives these days.
09:50
@Oded true, even in London - saw some anti-Israeli protests going on in there.
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry I don't go to the city centre these days much (remote work...), so not really close to any of that.
@Oded yeah he's fine, and also @Mithical who is the north region. :)
@Oded good.
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry good to know. Had no idea Mithical is in IL.
Thinking about it, we're spread pretty well. @Yaakov in the south-ish area, Mith in the north, and I'm in the center. ;-)
SE sandwich. :P
@Oded well, they are. Think since childhood, not born here, same as Yaakov.
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry I'll be crossing my fingers for you all.

@Catija I’ve really only played Sims 2 and 4. Game 2 gives a lot of freedom in neighborhood and plot management, and landscaping. Sims 4 lacks completely in this regard. Heck, landscaping wasn’t even possible the first few years of that game. Also, game 4 is plagued with putting everything behind extension packs. They are expensive. Very. The base game barely has any stuff.
@SPArcheon Finally; a game where the camera is so far away it’s actually possible to see the surroundings, and get an overview.
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry So the 15 last announcements from the company can be flagged too? :O
@rene I don't know, actually. What I interacted with was a dashboard that essentially showed data in graphs for all sorts of different things.
@Catija yeah, Balpha filled in for you. A home-grown solution.
11:57
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact You would "love" this one
@rene cool. Thanks @balpha !
@SPArcheon I think I played III when it was released for the GameBoy? But it didn't make as much of an impression on me. I was grumpy they didn't release IV.
12:19
I have such a nostalgic connection with the original designs that I actually don't really like the 3-D redesigns they've put out. I actually like how flat they were. 🤣
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact the most recent one I have played was the iOS App but even that was when it first came out and there wasn't much to do.
@Catija Oh, that one is bad.
@SPArcheon That does look funny.
@Catija I honestly feel 2d games often have better art than modern games
> You truly are a fantastic person.
And, if you are not that way now, I am convinced you will become so.
and in a sense the limitations made things better
@Catija that intro quote and the whole personality thing.
^ but I have reasons to be quite partial to that kind of "character creation" test.
12:35
@JourneymanGeek Better than this?
@JourneymanGeek Or this???
I said often :D
Althugh, that last screenshot is from a garbage game (2016 remake of R&C 1 and 3). It's a new version of Metropolis city, previously in games 1, 3, and 7.
That first screenshot is Metropolis in game 7.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I know only one Metropolis.
@SPArcheon Not that one.
wait. there's SEVEN rachet and clank games?
Oh, If its a console game? I don't know about it
never owned one
12:48
7?
No. There's 15.
Plus 1 mobile game I'm not counting.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact That's game 14.
I sadly don't have more than the demo version for game 6. :(
Since you asked:

1: Ratchet & Clank (PS2/PS3)
2. Going Commando (PS2/PS3)
3. Up Your Arsenal (PS2/PS3)
4. Deadlocked/Gladiator (PS2/PS3)
5. Size Matters (PSP/PS2)
6. Secret Agent Clank (PSP)
7. Tools of Destruction (PS3)
8. Quest for Booty (PS3)
9. A Crack in Time (PS3)
10. All 4 One (PS3)
11. Full Frontal Assault / Q-Force (PS3)
12. Before the Nexus (mobile game) (iOS/Android)
13: Nexus / Into the Nexus (PS3)
14. 2016 remake (PS4)
15. Rift Apart (PS5)

And then Going Mobile, which I'm not sure why I'm not counting. Don't ask me.
@JourneymanGeek well, unless it is like Goat Simulato 3
Argh. I forgot the years of release. :(
Anyway; game 1 came out in 2002. Game 15 came out in 2021.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact don't worry, that missing info won't change my intent to not play any.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact I know about... 2 of these
13:05
@JourneymanGeek Then it's time to learn about the rest! ;)
consoles though
have you ever tried using a controller with no opposable thumbs?
Get a PS5. You can play the PS4 and PS5 games on it, as well as stream some of the older ones. Not 5, 6 and 12, at least.
I suspect its emulatable
@JourneymanGeek They make special controllers for those people who can't opposable their thumbs.
Also, game 15 is on Steam, for Windows. It's only a 5/10, though. It gets some stuff right, and fails in other ways. The weapon count and diversity is an improvement of the previous few games, at least.
@JourneymanGeek Yes.
@JourneymanGeek I have opposable thumbs, so no.
Game 15 takes a deep dive in terms of story, level variety, level/art design (except a few very good ones, such as Nefarious city). Voice acting is considerable worse, too.
Etc.
@JourneymanGeek Actually, yes I have.
13:47
I've only ever had Nintendo systems, so my gaming has been limited to that and stuff that works on a Mac. I don't generally like Windows much.
I tried playing a game or two on my Mac, but figured it was pointless, as I have a Windows computer anyway.
We have a bit of an Apple problem... two MBP laptops (both supplied by SO), two iPhones, four iPads, Apple TV, AirTags, two Apple Watches... I think that's it?
Oh, and my giant monitor is the last of the Apple monitors from 2017 or whenever they stopped making them.
i generally hate mac, but would prefer it over a slow windows pc
14:02
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact oh, but then you can play Genshin too :P
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Busy.
14:16
@Catija Exact opposite of things here :D
though my dad does have a mac, and I like the fact that its not a complete <censored> slow piece of <censored> like the dell
Dell is a local sweetheart (being in Austin) but I know it's not always super awesome stuff. 🤣
Oh, with a LITTLE bit of tuning, it would sing
swap the spinning rust for ... ANY SSD, even some cheap chinese one that's only half dubious (and I have a fairly decent SATA m.2 somewhere) and it'll be usable
@Catija I ran a dell out of a dumpster 2 PCs ago :D
Also some of dell's stuff is excellent
14:33
my dell has a 2core amd processor with integrated graphics
Monitors and workstations, oh hell yes.
@KevinB ah,I do have something both worse and more horrifying
oh actually I have more cores than 2 ._.
How old is this dell?
uh, it was bought refurbished probably... 6 years ago?
the cpu itself was released in 2012
iirc?
AMD A4-5300B
I see you that and potentially raise you the HP 610
Which I'd add, even WITH an SSD is dog slow with windows 10, and I know all about slow dogs
14:36
i don't even have an ssd
disk is frequently at 100% utilization
and for extra comedic purposes it has a 10 gig network card (Its used for testing at the moment)
yeah, that spinning rust...
best thing you can do with an old machine
I was running core 2 duos with chinese SSDs for a bit till the totally died
2007 era? Perfectly usable with windows 10
and... i'm using a graphics card that we bought for like $20 at bestbuy nearly 14 years ago
just to get dual monitor support
when i go to open a context menu, disk usage shoots up to 100% and it takes 15 seconds to appear
this happens :D
an SSD is the single best thing you can do to turn a nugget into something usable
AMD Radeon HD 7400 apparently
@SPArcheon Bet U Saw Yourself playing it.
14:43
not sure, i'm seeing two adaptors and they're both 7400 raedon, one is 7480D but disabled
@KevinB What’s the matter? I played games on an AMD Radeon HD 8750M. (Can’t remember exactly the model name).
i mean, i don't know how this card performs, but it's worked for many years, no issues with it for a development pc
disk is the main thing slowing me down
Heh, looked at a comparison. Mine was considerably faster. And I hated its performance. :P
@SPArcheon :(
@KevinB If you were local, I have a 120gb disk spare, lightly used free :D
i have a whole extra pc i could spare, but, doesn't feel right donating a pc to work
14:49
Are those fancy video cards still super hard to get?
not unless money is hard to get
there's plenty in stock
I’d appreciate a donation of an RTX 4090.
my extra pc has a 1080ti
Unfair. I’m still stuck with a 1070.
@Catija Yup
Now AI is messing stuff up
cause you need a ton of GPU/GPGPUs to do AI training, and they have VC money
14:51
new one is 7900xtx, got it on sale during one of the prime events
Its not as bad as it was, but its not affordable in any way
ALSO the current gen nvidia cards are just... big
more affordable cards are becomign available now
So it's AI instead of... crypto mining?
you can get a fairly decent card for gaming for $300-400
for 1080p gaming
14:52
Hell, the openAI CEO is a crypto bro who's starting a biometric scraping cryptocurrency
There is a reason I deeply distrust gen AI. Cause I deeply distrust the people behind it
@JourneymanGeek Did you forget about cryptocurrency?
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Well no, its ALSO a problem
but its also gradually becoming less profitable
It’s a problem in every way imaginable.
and messing up local powergrids
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Its started imploding
I'm looking forward to the big fires
Let’s get ChatGPT to trade cryptocurrency for us.
15:02
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact In the cloud, right?
@VLAZ Literally, please.
The thing I'm furious about crypto right now is actually the huge amounts of energy they consume and the fact that Texas pays them to not mine in hours of peak energy usage instead of putting together a higher bracket for energy consumption that charges them more for high use.
@Catija Not really related... but your message reminded me to something really weird I saw at a local shopping mall. A vending machine... selling Bitcoin
something similar to this one.
@Catija Yeah, it needs to go away in every way possible
@SPArcheon yeah. I'm in the parking lot of a grocery store and I think there's one just inside the door here, too.
@JourneymanGeek It's absurd!!! And they are moving into Texas more and more because of it ... I wouldn't be surprised if they consider the payments for non-use as part of their business model!!! And Texas is shit at having enough power, particularly considering we've been a top gas producer and have tons of wind energy.
We should be subsidizing more wind and solar instead of just throwing the money at crypto companies who are intentionally taking advantage of the state.
15:20
@Catija oh I am agreeing here
And they do
It's basically a big grift
15:35

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact it only appears empty.

@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry sad to read you're sad and angry... this place...

@g3rv4 yay! That worked, I lured you to reply. :D

@g3rv4 oh, it's not pointed at SE, not originally at least. But it fits in a weird coincidence.
I explained it before, let me find it...

@ByteCommander sorry to hear. Actually my own is not aimed at SE but for the situation in my country, sad for the lost lives and angry at those who caused it. But yeah it aligns pretty well with SE, just wouldn't change name to that just for SE. Said earlier today, I'm beyond the stage of caring enough.
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry It was 6 but then they changed it to 4, but they might have changed it again IDK
@user16217248 don't think they changed back, I'll try to see when the next spam is nuked.
Also it's per-site, on some it was reduced to 3. (!)
Just 3? So then Smoke Detector's autoflags might straight up insta-nuke it.

@Catija That's why proof of stake is better than proof of work. It uses much less energy.
@user16217248 Then what is the purpose of it being decentralized?
Might as well not use a blockchain.
@AndreasmovedtoCodidact How exactly does proof of stake defeat the purpose of it being decentralized but proof of work does not?
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry ugh, welp... and here I was, hoping the sadness and anger was just due to pretty insignificant stuff <3
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry I really can't complain, life is treating me too well
@user16217248 yup
@g3rv4 nah, I wouldn't change to that, maybe back to just "shadow" like in the Monica crisis days, but most likely wouldn't even bother. I'm sad for Stack Exchange, not at them, for the most part, at this point.
@g3rv4 yeah, and actually the same, kind of - I'm here at my home pretty much safe, far from the danger zones, working almost as usual, while there are so many whose life was totally disrupted, and still in total turmoil.
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry yeah, despite the news, I can't imagine really what it must be like. Happy to hear you're safe, but if it's tough to read about it thousand of kms away, it must be super tough for that to happen in your country

One very surprising thing that helped me a lot in the first days was quite a few people from my past suddenly making contact, some in email, some in chat. Knowing people who you never met IRL still think about you after years (one after 14 (!) years of no contact) just give a good feeling. :)
@g3rv4 it is. I'm not a believer, neither in God nor in Fate, but still, it does feel like we got a huge slap from God or whatever is there, for misbehaving to the point of almost civil war. I think our enemies thought we'll just break and turn against each other, but luckily, the opposite happened.
@ShadowWizardIsSadAndAngry <3 sending good vibes... I'm not a believer either just horrified at the whole thing
@g3rv4 thanks! Accepted, and appreciated. :-)

@user16217248 Assuming the purpose is a lack of trust in the partaking parties, as far as I'm aware, proof of work better prevents against bad actors. Proof of stake simply requires trust in a set of fewer operators. That trust can then be misused, while with proof of stake, it'll be detected, and prevented.
Anyway. I hold the firm opinion that cryptocurrency and the other currently mainstream uses of blockchain, such as NFT, should be illegal.
It doesn't really solve anything (other than committing (reasonably defined) crime undetected) that other solutions don't better solve. It also comes at insane costs.
What a coincidence.

@AndreasmovedtoCodidact Why should it be illegal? If someone wants to use it, that's their problem.
23:27
@user16217248 it has a lot of negative externalities
