@MarcGravell Odd, I was seeing it even though clicking it said "no messages" or something to that effect. Maybe it was cached on my end somehow. It's gone now, at any rate.

2 hours later…
7:43 PM
@MarcGravell RE: me getting booted from chat.stackexchange.com. I'm on Firefox 4.0b8pre. However, as you may notice, I'm still showing up in here just fine. :)

Login here is completely different to chat.SE

What's the difference?

so: does chat.SE not work? or work intermittently?

@MarcGravell Intermittently, it flakes out. Sometimes for very short periods of time. Right now, it's showing me as logged out.

@George - can you try the test / help page ?

7:46 PM
@MarcGravell All tests successful.

@GeorgeMarian if you really want the gory details: here we can use a sub-domain cookie, so we hoist your identity from your MSO cookie. there we use a different mechanism that involves localstorage, some smoke, a few mirrors and a magic chant

@MarcGravell Don't forget the blood sacrifice. Otherwise how would you colour the @-notifications?

The reason I mentioned the flaky router is that was an issue earlier. The webservers couldn't make outbound connectioens (to the OpenID servers, i assume).

for chat we sidestep all of that and let the core login stress about things like OpenID
hmmm... pondering...

@MarcGravell The thing is, it's flaked out and fixed itself w/o my intervention plenty of times before.

7:49 PM
(I'm going to hijack this to chat feedback btw)

i.e. I went away for a while, came back, found that I was on the rooms list and apparently logged out. Refreshed the page, and i was logged in.

Do you by any chance have noscript running, perhaps on the stackauth.com domain?
hmm - actually, scratch that:
the fact that you are now logged in probably means that is fine

I do, but I'm farily certain I've already enabled that domain.

if you didn't get a "hey, you've been logged in; welcome {name}", it sounds like it just didn't send your cookies

Yup, just verifed that it's enabled.

7:53 PM
I used to see that intermittently in Chrome on the main SO site. Not so often recently.
I don't see anything odd in the error logs. So you are currently logged in as normal? And all is fine?

I'd be tempted to blame Firefox, heh.

I'm logged into money.se and programmers.se and they're both working just fine.
Chat.SE not so much, it's telling me to login.

and when you do log in? i.e. log out of anywhere and re login?

That seems to work just fine. Want me to try it now?

if you have time

8:02 PM
That, I have too much of these days. :)
Ok, that worked, but not the same as the intermitent flakiness fixing itself. That is, I had to click on the "log in" link at the top of the page. Refreshing the page wasn't enough.
Not sure if this matters, but in my logged out state I entered the chat feedback page. Just now, I got this error: There seems to be a problem connecting to the server. Please check your internet connection and reload this page.
And, now I"m logged out of chat again.

(checking log)
nothing interesting in the log
do you perhaps have a competing browser session open on your 5th monitor?
I'm trying to think how your cookies are getting borked
I'd also be interested in looking at your current cookie values - from chat.SE - can you perhaps email them to me?

Sure, I can do that.

(marc.gravell@gmail.com or marc.gravell@stackoverflow.com)

I don't think I have another session running, certainly not on this machine. I guess I could try logging myself out of all and see if that fixes things.

a different machine should be unrelated
(we don't track sessions to that level)

8:13 PM
Oh, goodness....cookies are stored in a sqlite file since 3.0?

8:34 PM
@MarcGravell Ok, sent to your gmail.

8:56 PM
thanks - will look
