@Mithical And I thought I was the only one who knew the months origins.

My Latin and Greek foreign language teachers in high school both shared some folklore. (Why do I remember this?) The year originally had 10 months. But the scholars of the day saw how the seasonal cycles drifted too far from the expected month (or time of year) and proposed 2 additional months, or 60 days.

user728672
It was decided to honor their emperors, Julius and Augustus, (the reason for the placement is lost to history), but devoted acolytes argued over who would get 31 days and who 29, both factions insisted that their month get 31 days.

user728672
To appease them and avoid bloodshed the scholars proposed taking 2 days from the 30 in February (it was already considered a 'minor month) so that is why February has 28, and all other months follow in alternating numbers 31 or 30, except July and August which have 31.

user728672
I also remember a mneumonic? on how to remember which month has which number of days. Extend your fingers palms down. Tuck your thumbs underneath. Left pinky is January, the V between is February, Left Ring finger is March... ... July is left index. Right index is August.. etc..

Okay there is a wiki. This is nicer then the finger method

Since there are twelve Moons per year, once you account for the Blue Moon, it's easy to divide the year into 12 (as the North American aboriginals did long ago): timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/full-moon-names.html timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/blue-moon.html

@KylePollard Frankly - I can see some nefarious uses for that :D
Also answers something I was wondering since I literally woke up just as that was happening, saw it on my phone (so the designs at the edges were cut off) and went back to sleep. I guess it would make future theming easier :D
(that it was the same 'background' in an orange palette)

Yep, lots of awesome theming stuff coming from the Stacks team 😁 stackoverflow.design/product/guidelines/theming

Well - Dark mode, where available is going to get used
:D
(And I guess this makes custom stylesheeting easier too... hm.)

3:37 AM
Totally does! So you can have your orange and eat it too 🍊

lol
Was thinking dark themes, and fonts. :D

Today Aaron and @Kyle also changed the office's elevator music to:

Mods can hide/delete/convert a normal room to a private room?

What do you mean by "hide"?

@Wolgwang convert, yes.

Delete or convert, yeah.

oh, I failed to parse the question correctly. Confused about "delete a normal room to a private room"

@Mithical I am unable to find a room(neither in frozen section). So it is now a private room?

5:35 AM
@Wolgwang or possibly deleted...

Do you have 10,000+ reputation on the server where you're looking?

Nope :-/

if you remember the room title, I can probably check

It was "Room for someone's name and Wolgwang"

@Wolgwang In that case it was probably deleted.

5:39 AM
Under what circumstances can I ask a mod to delete a room?

Thanks :-)

@DavidPostill are you sure? Isn't that just hidden / disguised spam for that tool they don't want suggested?
@SmokeDetector raised a custom flag

ah, that is telling.

Rob
As a question it falls under benefit of the doubt, and I don't know exactly why it was deleted (excerpt off-topic, and by the OP in one case (they got a Peer Pressure badge)), but for going site to site it's certainly a nuisance - I don't know if "f" is wrong, but I custom mod flagged the above info.

7:49 AM
Yeah, hmmm, good point. Spam flag retracted, it could in fact be that they're just slowly trying to find the right site.

8:02 AM
Always fun to see a regex question being flagged

@Luuklag Yeah, usually means it needs code formatting.

@RyanM yup

Today is a day of....
low grade annoyance
I had a bunch of alerts go off when I logged in at work and turns out it was a known issue
and I'm slightly sleepy

8:24 AM
:( But... if it's a known issue, it's not something you have to be totally awake for? :D

8:48 AM
@KylePollard good for you! ;)

Rob
@rene No matter how many times he tries to surf they won't beat Koa!

@GWarner nice fish!

@Tinkeringbell I didn't know it was
:D

9:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek ahhh

Turn on PC and log in BAAAAAAAMMMMMMMM sound from alerts
and I don't recognise any of the machines that are having issues

Oof...
If that happens to me, first thing I'll do is go get something to drink :P Because with all the noise and notifications there's no way I'm going to be able to work on it anyways :P

lol
Well my job is letting the people who need to actualy fix things know they need to fix things
and apparently snitching

9:24 AM
@SmokeDetector k, my portugese isn't too good, but anything with a random 'penis' in it deserves a flag ;)

9:56 AM
@Luuklag careful where you stick the flag though......
:P

Rob
10:21 AM
Translates, oops; that word means flag.

@Rob nope, it's just pênis, they added a roof so it will feel better when it's hot or raining outside.
@Luuklag also BTW, your comment is now archived forever here, was it on purpose? ;)

10:57 AM
@GWarner oof

Random oof time?
@M.A.R. oof
:D
!!/blame for oof

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 It's ArtOfCode's fault.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 that's the capsule

11:29 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 it was a sideaffect I was aware off ;)

@JourneymanGeek Thank you for polluting the environment, please have a safe flight.

@Luuklag If I spent any money on amazon its going up in flames :D

anyone knows from the top of their heads where I can see how long a macbook air has been running for since last reboot?

the uptime command might work?

11:32 AM
Ah, I found it, 1 day and 4 hours, bit soon for apps to start misbehaving
!!/blame

@Luuklag It's Mark's fault.

@JourneymanGeek The shape of that rocket really matches the personalities of the people it's made to carry :)

@Tinkeringbell hey! Don't be disrespectful towards Wally Funk!

@rene Hmm. True...
We'll just say it wasn't really made for people like her, then ;)

If she wanted to send a message to Nasa after all these years she couldn't have picked a better rocket, I give you that.

11:45 AM
exactly

@rene Yeah, that's also very true :D

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I see you bought a new suit:

@rene yup

@JourneymanGeek yeah heard it got tons of memes, lol :D
Anyway anyone saw this movie?

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 yup
Its fun
I personally liked it

11:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek the movie? Awesome! :P
@Rob and hat!

Rob
Good spot, Cpt.

Oh no just read that Iran suffers from extreme lack of water... @M.A.R. hope you're fine!
heh very nice avatar, Lyoness.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I guess the folks in Limburg are happy to share some of their water ....

@rene to soon?

@rene so go and put a pipe between the two countries! :D

12:02 PM
@Luuklag maybe.

I've been seeing these clips on facebook from a german guy, who is helping out in a german valley that has been completly flooded
Their hauling tractor load after tractor load of debris out of a village for about a week on end now
using about 1000 machines or so
clearing basements bucket by bucket, house by house

:/
Hopefully only debris? (i.e. not people...)

There were a great number of casualties unfortunately
In the entire germany 100+ I think

Back to my previous suggestion, it's actually a thing, in smaller scale:
The Red Sea–Dead Sea Conveyance, sometimes called the Two Seas Canal, is a planned pipeline to run from the coastal city of Aqaba by the Red Sea to the Lisan area in the Dead Sea. It will provide potable water to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories, bring water with a high concentration of salts resulting from the desalination process (reject brine) to stabilise the Dead Sea water level, and generate electricity to support the energy needs of the project. The project is planned to be carried out by Jordan and is entirely in Jordanian territory. It will be financed by the governments...
This was the greatest dream of Peres, if I'm not mistaken.
@Luuklag yeah, I know. Just hope the number is final.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 yeah me too, I don't know if there are still missing persons, but I think there still are
wow, Samsung is releasing an 1000 inch 8k screen

Tink, just saw some woman crocheting her own clothes, you should try too!

Rob
Cleanup will be well into next year:

@Luuklag Ehhh... with my size, that just takes too long. Before I've finished, I need my clothes either smaller or bigger again XD :P

Rob

@Tinkeringbell :D

12:24 PM
@Rob rebuilding at least, cleanup might be done a lot quicker if you see the sheer amount of machinery that is out there

I do really like this pattern though: ravelry.com/patterns/library/sashiko-happy-coat and if I could wear one, I'd make one :)

all farmers etc. from across germany came to that region to help out
there literrally are thousands of machines
all working for free

That's the bright side of disasters, yeah.
People showing their good side during crisis, etc. :)

@Tinkeringbell ofcourse you could wear one, you just might have to add or remove a few loops from the pattern

@Luuklag or... make the cloth responsive.
:P

12:26 PM
Go get yourself a pattern drawing class

@Luuklag hehe, deprecating the tag? ;)
After adding excerpt realized it's not fitting for most existing questions lol. But wasn't sure what to do...

I think the excerpt is fine, and a good use for the tag
questions about outdated answer can get the outdated info tag

@Luuklag Adapting the pattern wouldn't be much of a problem, indeed. But like I just said, it's so often a waste of time/effort with me because my weight fluctuates enough that I'm too likely to not fit into it when I finish, or just for a very short time.

Rob
12:53 PM
@Luuklag So, ten trucks to this street; where do they take it?:

Dumps/landfills, most likely.

Rob
His suit is too small.

1:12 PM
@Rob What I saw is that they took one lane of a double-lane cariage way into town as a temporary landfill, and then got to work hauling that to landfills/recycling
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 et al. regarding the -tag, should we dupe close Q's about outdated answers to the announcement post about the outdated answer project?
@Tinkeringbell here in the NL they have now removed 900 tonnes of waste from the flooded area, mostly household items from flooded parts of houses.

@Luuklag possibly, case by case. I think.

@Luuklag And they're not there yet. I know there's a lot of mud too, and I just read about the damage to nature: Invasive species might've spread a lot faster now with the floods carrying their seeds, and a lot of insect populations are gone too, they're still cleaning up dead bigger animals too.

Yeah, they estimate that only 2% of trash caried by the floods will end up in the sea

1:32 PM
In a sense, that's good...

user728672
1:47 PM
Well I'm all set for my time travel. Wish me luck?

If you need extra luck, are you truly all set?

user728672
@luuklag sorry about those edits, I think I was going cross-eyed I had been looking at the html and SE edit boxes too long.

user728672
@luuklag So you don't like using [] to hide images that aren't important to a screen reader?

@GWarner ?
maybe try to direct link to a message @GWarner, that makes it easier to track back

user728672
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 That fish was off the IRC fish slap wiki.

user728672
1:53 PM
@Luuklag It dosnt matter I just was asking for an opinion about tagging, it wasnt important.

I don't know what edits you're apologizing for

user728672
@luuklag forget it it wasnt important

haha I wish my brain worked like that ;)
You're talking about this answer: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/45597/…?
Damn, why are old things so very rarely documented online :/

2:12 PM
@Luuklag Online is a very recent thing... old things should have manuals though?
you know, the offline kind :P

the one in all languages except your own?

@Tinkeringbell there probably were at some point, but never distributed to a wide audience
I need to know the drift factor for aerial plant protection product application. Which was allowed till 2012 in NL

@Luuklag Doesn't that depend on how high the wind speed is? :P

@Wolgwang yes

2:17 PM
In what format should I put the date?

yyyy-mm-dd

Would this work only for SO?

Nope, but on other sites not all conditions might be met
so you would end-up with 0 records

@Tinkeringbell amongst others yes

How can I try on other...?

2:20 PM
@Luuklag Tried the BINAS yet? :P

But there is a standard % used in the application process for products, and I need that to use in an international setting
@Tinkeringbell I'm 100% sure that BINAS doesn't cover the legislative aspects of plant protection ;)

@Luuklag I know, just kidding... I don't really have anything else to offer.

@rene Thanks :-)

I'm having success with our Community-a-thon so far 🙌 twitter.com/kylejrp/status/1417860059065847823?s=20
Three successful posts and I got onto the HNQ 🔥

I'm not sure I'd refer to getting on HNQ as a success...
;)

lol
The consistancy is, IMO :D
I got to 10k mainly by grinding an answer a day

Should this not be status-PARTIALLY-completed?

Q: Encouraging users to create an account (and keep it)

NullUserException อ_อI know SO's policy is "you don't have to register to ask questions," but there are so many new members and so many hit-and-runs... The majority of the questions I see now are coming from new users (i.e., it's their first question). Although unregistered users should still be able to ask questions...

@KylePollard Which questions got into HNQ?

If he said, that'd break his cover...

Q: What Stack Exchange site is appropriate for asking where a movie can be found for streaming?

HematitaI've not been able to find a particular movie, and I can't figure out which site this is appropriate for.

So... why is this being downvoted?
It seems like a reasonable site recommendation question, even if the answer is "it doesn't work here".

3:22 PM
i would assume it's related to the question they asked before that one
(though i haven't looked at it yet)

Their attempt to ask on M&TV doesn't seem like the sort of thing that should impact the score of a site recommendation question here?

from the comments, it sounds like they were potentially asking for something illegal. Whether or not that should impact the voting here, it will

I think it's a mix of it being a shopping question of sorts and folks assuming piracy
It's a lot easier to pirate 😁

The question doesn't seem to ask for anything illegal at all. There are free places to stream that aren't illegal and I'd bet you that many people think of things like Netflix as "free" even though you have to pay a subscription fee since once you have it, everything on it is free.

user728672
@Tinkeringbell sorry i thought i had an image ready.. gimme a minute

3:38 PM
Is it frowned upon to point site recs to chat? On RPG we would point users who ask shopping questions to our chat (we also have a list of forums). I haven't done so myself here because I have no idea what room to point them to or whether one even exists
And "try to find the right chat room for this" isn't a quest I like setting folks on

site recommendations are a different beast than that
it's not really an opinion based question, it's one that can be answered on the spot

I didn't mean send the site rec to chat, but send the shopping one

It's fine in chat, yeah.

@Catija assumptions were probably made

I suppose I should be asking the Movies & TV chat room whether they like getting that kind of question. Off on a quest I go!

3:45 PM
The Screening Room - but from my time there, they didn't mind it, though with everyone in different regions, the answers aren't always helpful.

@Catija ugh. Hence the landscape being messy 😁

@user1271772 This exposes my brand new account I made for the community-a-thon, but as long as you can keep it a secret that's okay... 😉

Q: After how many iterations can I shortcut the Delina, Wild Mage / Pixie Guide combo?

toroidI'm playing at competitive rules enforcement with Delina, Wild Mage and Pixie Guide. If I attack with Delina, Wild Mage targeting Pixie Guide with the triggered ability, I'll continue creating copies of Pixie Guide for as long as I successfully roll 15—20. For my first roll, I'll roll two dice an...

And I am not sure about regional differences

@Ollie Wasn't me!
@Someone_Evil If they are specifically off-topic on a site, I would frown yes. Because I'd see it as using chat to circumvent the topic restrictions on a site.

That doesn't seem to be the consensus on most of the sites that I use. For example, recipe recommendations are very much off topic on Cooking but they're happy to chat about it in The Frying Pan.
The issue there is, in most cases, the user doesn't have enough rep for chat, so sending them to chat is kinda pointless.

3:52 PM
I mean, chat chats about a lot of off-topic stuff. I just would never recommend to go to chat just because something is off-topic on main.

user728672

If it comes up in regular conversation, fine.

user728672
Forgive my boredom. My PC is heading back to december 2020. so Im on a laptop

user728672
Did you google 'Movie title' streaming?

user728672
Pin Drop.

3:58 PM
@Tinkeringbell In this case it's because the question type doesn't work on main, not any other reason. So we point to chat (and a list of RPG forums) as a place that can handle the question type
But I also see why some places might not, so I wanted to ask the relevant chat room

@Someone_Evil I guess it really depends on the site anyways yeah.

4:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell musta been Journeyman.

Probably. It's always easiest to blame the dog at least ;)

4:34 PM
@Catija Because that's what people do on Meta.SE. It's a culture that I think needs to end.

@user1271772 what, downvoting in general? Heard that before.

I think there are some downvoting habits that I'd like to see adjusted but I don't think it's hugely problematic.

rene's got several posts on that, lemme search

To be honest, there are many times I have felt that meta questions probably don't need downvotes in most cases - not all but most. I don't know that we'd actually get rid of them (questions only!) but I don't think it would be a terrible thing.
I often find downvotes end up being used to replace actually talking about the problems with a post. Particularly on meta, I'd much rather someone be upvoting a good answer than downvoting someone for even asking the question.
(Again, to emphasize, I'm talking about downvotes on questions on meta only - so don't start taking me out of context here)

@Ollie I don't think I have posts that advocate that downvoting has to stop. And if I have I must had a blurry moment ...

4:48 PM
@rene heck no, I meant responses to new users' many complaints about that. A few on MSO.

@rene I think you probably have some that say that there are only ever complaints about downvotes, not upvotes? :P

Am I that dark?

@Tinkeringbell he'd be right, AFAIK

@rene Maybe, I dunno :P Could be I'm remembering another post by someone else.

Who complains about upvotes? Unless it's the amount of reputation you get for them?

4:49 PM
People have pointed out that they've been serially upvoted... not quite a complaint, per se...

@Ollie I mean, there have been complaints about upvotes, but they're mostly tied to pity-upvotes and the reputation earned through those. But there have also been complaints about upvotes on swag contest posts ;)

@Tinkeringbell and complaints about upvotes on the many off-topic posts on Meta from sympathetic users: "wonder why someone would vote this up"...

Either way, I like the concept of sites that have up and down votes. Somehow, three choices are a bit better to me than 'agree or shut up'.
@Ollie Oh, I put those under pity-upvotes.

Grr.
For off-topic posts, I generally use Glorf's Lost Souls script, a quick comment pointing them toward the correct site if you haven't deleted it already, and the 20K tools...

@Catija I'm mostly meh on that whole topic in grand scheme of things, while I can see that for a single user it can be overwhelming / confusing the only point of past discussion that had some merit was the double meaning we (the meta crowd) assigned to voting: the (dis)agreement bit. I'm of the opinion that it needs a technical solution, not yet another meta voting has to change type of crusade.

4:53 PM
Pity upvotes make it harder for us to delete the post.

And I said this before: I can make one comment on any meta post and you're guaranteed to get more downvotes then you had bargained for.
That is: the voters can be easily influenced, either way.

Especially if the influencer has... some influence, e.g. a mod.

Doesn't need to be a mod. I admit I take a bit more care when commenting since I became a diamond on Stack Apps.

@Ollie Meh :P Mods don't have that much influence. If we had, we wouldn't be moderating so much ;)
