How do I search for HTML in my answers, e.g. <i>?
When I put search "user:106285 <i>", it gives me a bunch of posts where I use the pronoun I.

lol. That's great
I imagine there is an escape character of some sort...

I tried using \<i\> as well as &lt;i&gt;.
And tried putting it in quotes.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange I've got this search which has one question where you technically do have italics... Sort of. The link registers fully until you open it up in the editor, where the link breaks in the center and its italicized from that point forward.
Weird.
Alright, now search is being awkward.

12:39 AM

@Spevacus Yeah the JS editor does not parse it the same way the it's rendered as HTML.
I probably don't have any on MSE, but I know that I've done some in formatted code on Sec.SE by putting them inside <pre>.
Ah, found one.
2
A: Hashing a large file on an embedded system

forestThe memory requirements for SHA-2 are independent of the size of the message. The way most cryptographic hashes work isn't exactly intuitive. All it is is a function that starts with an initial value and takes a single input of its block size, which permutes the digest. There is no internal state...

1:16 AM
Can I embed links in <pre> code? <a href= doesn't work.
But so far as I can tell, I can use <b>, <i>, , and .

@forestdistrustsStackExchange shouldn't.
You can test in the sandbox?
I don't think any formatting should work inside pre formatting tags either

Some formatting does work.

Well - using the sandbox is still good advice then :D

And it only works with <pre>, not four leading spaces.
Yeah I guess so. I'm lazy though. Just wondered if there was a known way.

A: Was a question of mine deleted / removed? How do I tell?

reneThat is embarrassing but I found your question. I used a SEDE query to narrow down the number of posts I had to visit: https://data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1411279 Your question was deleted by a moderator two years ago after it was closed for being too broad by five close voters. A ...

Oh this is cool. I didn't know you could find deleted posts.

1:41 AM
You can search deleted posts by tag, deletion/creation date, score, and a couple other things via SEDE.

Never learned how to use SEDE. Maybe I should take the time.

Not, notably, by content or author.

huh, interesting

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog hm, no comic?

1:46 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange The last time that got posted: metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/307953

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Oh - this is our chinese propaganda spammers. There's usually a comic.

Chinese propaganda spammer... what?

@forestdistrustsStackExchange I mean, that's litttterrralllyyyy what it is
and I don't mean 'chinese' in the 'in chinese'

> Hong Kong's Apple Daily, which is known for releasing information that sows internal unrest in Hong Kong society and vilifies the Chinese Communist Party
hahahaha

I mean it literally attacks the former US government and some officials, some dissident, etc...

1:48 AM
Well, in this particular case it was just a recipe for fried rice. But there's usually more to it...

yup
But I've seen the exact recipe
I wonder if they realised stuff isn't sticking around and decided to see what would happen :D

Yeah, that's a decent guess. I've seen some patient spammers edit the spam content in later.

2:07 AM
Those ones are annoying. Especially when it's edited in during the grace period and Smokey misses it >:(

@Spevacus Which might be the intention, even if they don't get the details
It is in a sense, an arms race

I think we're winning.

"The Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilence" :D

2:26 AM
Lol

@Feeds now we've lost the XKCD onebox??? What is chat coming to!?!?

It's not working here or on SO.

@Catija It seems to be working on SO chat - chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/52253333

I wonder if it's because Feeds posted it

Well, looks like it is working here.
Just not for Feeds.

Both of the ones that didn't work were posted by feeds.

Dangit, Feeds. >_>

Maybe it's posting it with some junk that's breaking the boxing.

2:41 AM
I edited and hit submit and it worked fine with no actual changes

Weird.

Maybe something was wrong on the other end?

Who runs it? It's just a thing that works.

wot
I mean, who has the program/script/whatever that runs the bot?

2:43 AM
I think it's just an RSS feed.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Feeds is eternal, it's the universal constant. It's been there and will always be there.

Oh, it's handled by SE itself, not some bot with an account?
What is "into an extra area on the screen" mean?

I mean.... it's built in, I guess? Feeds is a chat tool that you can throw any RSS feed into you want... that one is just for xkcd.

2:48 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange it's a dismissible box in the upper left corner but only on the full site.

How often does Feeds post? Twice a week?

Is that the thing that can show new posts and the like?

Lots of sites use them to monitor new meta posts in chat.
@10Rep I think it's cached every 10 or 15 minutes?

Rob
@Feeds But the axes are reversed.

The TL has a feed from MSE with all posts with the moderator-tools tag.

1 hour later…
4:04 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange essentially chat has a 'internal' RSS feed reader
@Catija lol. Chat needs some love
nooo clue how I can guilt someone into getting it on the roadmap :D

2 hours later…
5:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek You think if someone releases a really bad security bug in chat, they'd revamp it, or just straight up remove it?

6:09 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange more likely they'll patch it
The reason oneboxen don't work that well was a security fix

haha really?
Lemme guess, XSS?

And killing chat probably would cause a bunch of issues
@forestdistrustsStackExchange can't remember off the top of my head

'I wish I was better at web app exploitation.
Would be so fun to screw with SE.

Oh, this is very much 'politics'

6:10 AM
or convincing folks a revamp of chat would either make money or save money
@forestdistrustsStackExchange hmm
Chat's kinda in "We're not killing it off, but we're not putting in development effort unless absolutely necessary"

If only SE was open source.
The site is literally full of actual professional developers.

As opposed to the apps, which were "We're not killing it off (yet), but we're not putting in development effort cause we can't"
eh, that boat has sailed, gotten stuck in a canal, gotten pulled out, sailed again, and might be stuck with egyptian law enforcement.
Q&A very much 'is' the product

lol
Hm, seems I have another guest account here that I probably need merged. But do I dare go through the same pain of all the glitches?

._.
Might be a good idea to consolidate them and report them all at once

Well, I just kind of run into them.
I've had a lot of accounts.
Most answered just one question, but I just found one with an HNQ answer:
61
A: Does adding a password to BIOS prevent malware from infecting it?

guestAbsolutely not. The BIOS password is only an authentication mechanism presented when the system boots or when a manual change to the configuration is made during boot. Malware which overwrites the BIOS typically does so by writing over SPI, the interface which the BIOS resides on. If malware gets...

6:17 AM
Yeah, but if you're getting them merged one by one...

@JourneymanGeek As long as they're newer than my oldest account, it's safe, right?

@forestdistrustsStackExchange I think so!

If they're older than my oldest account, then that's turned into the main one and IDs get messed up.

I've literally only had two accounts, and I've never had any reason to merge them

My only issue is that I've posted many times before I decided to actually make an account.
I probably have a hundred answers here in accounts over the last decade, most of which I've forgotten about. But a few of them have some decent answers that get more than 2 votes.

6:23 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange technically, two pretty major parts of the UI are, anyway. Stacks and the new editor are both open source.

Oh that's like the enterprise thing?

No. It's the design system.

oh
Also, @Catija could you check security.stackexchange.com/users/141113/guest and see if it has Tor as an IP? If so then would it be possible to merge (assuming it doesn't cause any more weirdness, since it's not older than my current account)?

6:26 AM
The way the sites look, colors used, fonts, images... all of it. So people can use Stacks to create their own website.

So for SO clones or something?

Not necessarily. It makes building a website easier because you don't have to design everything from scratch.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange in SE's case it also means they can (eventually) update and maintain that for the network as a whole

Oh, any website, not just Q&A sites?

I'm pretty sure there's lots of companies out there that offer premade CSS files?
@forestdistrustsStackExchange can't right now. On phone.

6:30 AM
ok
It's basically that HNQ answer that I'm hoping to absorb.
(Well and a few others, but I like that one)

@forestdistrustsStackExchange take the time to document them all :D

@JourneymanGeek I don't know them all! I always used the name "guest" or a totally random name. Every once in a while I come across one.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange assuming the styling had everything that you needed, sure. We only have styles for stuff we use. But it's used all over the place.

So - if people start poking at chat again - a 'good' bit of leverage would be to move it over to stacks

6:33 AM
Honestly, it'd probably be better to start over from scratch.
But then again I'm a minimalist. I don't care about features like stars.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange that would go over poorly
Chat's kinda one of the things people love even after they leave
@forestdistrustsStackExchange in an entirely unscientific poll with a sample size of "places I hang out at" - the starwall and SE style replies are the most missed things.

By start over I mean the codebase, not wiping everything.

I suspect the only way chat gets real development is if SE decides to sell it together with Teams

@MadScientist which kinda feels like a missed opportunity now ._.

@JourneymanGeek Google chat doesn't have replies (or even quotes) and it's the worst

6:35 AM
Unlikely since teams is highly integrated with things like Slack.

On the one hand, I'd love it if they could revamp it. On the other hand, I feel like they might make things worse and think it might just be better if they don't touch it.

@MadScientist which google chat :D
I was complaining elsewhere over how they had so many darned variations of it

@JourneymanGeek They could use XMPP instead of Slack...
Slack is awful.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange XMPP... uh....

There's something coming in the next month that might work with Chat pretty well but I'm not sure whether we'll go that direction.

6:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek The one I use at work ;-). So whatever the current one in Google Suite is

It had so much promise and then everyone dumped it all at once.

@JourneymanGeek That's because people were trying to make an XMPP bridge.

@Catija Something to look forward to I guess.

Better to move to XMPP than try to bridge it here.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange everyone was, or using it

6:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek Discord got way better when they added actual replies.

then decided to go with their own ones
@Catija I've not actually seen the real discord client in ages :D
or Slack

@MadScientist I guess that's technically part of Meet? The app on my phone is still called Hangouts, though.

@Catija not only does google create a new chat client every 6 months, they also reuse names.

Discord is one of those laughable chat systems. It's used by gamers and noobs (for lack of an appropriate word). It goes IRC > XMPP > Matrix > Slack > * > ASCII over telnet using IPoAC > Discord.

\o/
It works and people are there.

6:39 AM
Dunno. They did claim they were killing off Hangouts. But I think that's just the video calls, in favor of Meet.

If by "there" you mean 600 people who are idle and never talk.
Wikipedia had a huge discussion about that when moving away from Freenode.

the big issue I have with discord is it joins you on ALL THE ROOMS

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Discord is infinitely better than Slack. Slack is terrible.

and my room list is huge

You can hide them, though?

6:40 AM
@Catija Maybe. I just assumed where Slack is on that.

.... you can?

@Catija It's called Google Chat, and is on the mail domain from Google. I really have no idea from which previous Google chat thingy it is derived from

But the others I know are horrible. Discord is one step above Yahoo Answers comments.

You can mute and collapse them, yeah.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange Its worth seperating the 'platform' and the 'people'
I think if my matrix peeps were on discord or slack, it would be very much the same

6:42 AM
Oh if you count the platform, it goes even lower.
The Discord platform is awful. The people are too. But even IRC has morons.

I don't have anyone on XMPP, so the value for it is minimal

XMPP is a good technology but sees fairly little broad use.
It's a good protocol for building things on top of. I think Kik is based on XMPP.

Matrix appeals to my paranoia :D
(and I did run my own XMPP server once so XMPP has that)

How so? And Matrix is basically glorified slightly-centralized IRC with noobs on it.

You're confusing the people and the platform again

6:43 AM
I dislike both.

@MadScientist Huh. It's called Hangouts both in my SO email and personal, along with the app.

XMPP's kinda 'traditional' 1-1 chat first as opposed to a chatroom.

Silly things like being able to delete your messages...
The horrible way it lets you quote people.

Matrix works really well as a chatroom + we're mostly running individual homeservers
so we're not reliant on a big company to host

@JourneymanGeek XMPP multi-party chats are fairly rudimentary, yeah. And they can have rather large lag between performing an action and seeing the result.

6:44 AM
We could go XMPP but we didn't

@Catija Okay, I still have Hangouts in the menu, so this is something separate from Hangouts

lol
.... crap, accidentally started an anarchist collective didn't we...

?

@forestdistrustsStackExchange pretty much we went "We need another space with less rules where we can talk privately" and... for some reason enough of us agreed or had enough experience with matrix to do it :D
@Catija lol, sorry for the confusion, I am having a side conversation :D

Oh. Your SU space, I guess.

6:47 AM
@Catija yup

There's a handful of them for different sites.

I prefer protocols so simple that you can communicate using telnet if you really want.
There's an elegance to plain text.

@Catija more or less, I'm on matrix for SU, slack for ex-sf and another community, and the 2 discords you know of :D

I'm only on the one Discord and one special place I don't talk about. :P I know about the other one but I left it after it got to be a bit much.

Don't you need JS for Discord?

6:51 AM
I... just have an app for it.
You can also just open it in a browser.

So you either have to have a cell phone, or use JS in a browser?
No (non-mobile) clients?

The app is for the phone or the computer.

But I mean, does it have to be an official app? Or can you use a 3rd party client like you can with IRC and XMPP, or is it tied into a single centralized app?

@JourneymanGeek This seems to imply you don't need the client.

7:08 AM
Where would I ask a question about knives for self-defense? Specifically a question about a reverse S curve blade and techniques?

Rob
7:25 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange Seems on-topic here; as usual, check the Help / FAQ.

@Catija I use a unofficial client called ripcord
its lighter and less "pretty"
It does some things better, some things worse

Rob

@Rob What about things like blade material? (like VG10 vs S30v?)

Busy ATM, but here's a search term: stackexchange.com/search?q=metallurgy - there's no Metalworking site, only inferior Woodworking.
Slim chance: mattermodeling.stackexchange.com - but personally I'd recommend black ceramic.

@forestdistrustsStackExchange I could see a blacksmithing site being interesting but the overlap's gonna be wierd

Haha, oh god I'm looking at some knife reviews and on the Amazon page for a Spyderco:
> CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.
CHOKING HAZARD -- Toy contains a marble. Not for children under 3 yrs.
CHOKING HAZARD -- Toy contains a small ball. Not for children under 3 yrs.
CHOKING HAZARD -- This toy is a small ball. Not for children under 3 yrs.
CHOKING HAZARD -- Children under 8 yrs. can choke or suffocate on uninflated or broken balloons. Adult supervision required. Keep uninflated balloons from children. Discard broken balloons at once.
CHOKING HAZARD -- This toy is a marble. Not for children under 3 yrs.
"This toy is a small ball" ahahahaha
Someone really went overboard trying to protect their ass from liability issues. :D

uhm wait
Isn't a spyderco a knife?

also... small ball?
wait...

7:52 AM
"Toy contains a marble" "Toy contains a small ball" "This toy is a marble" ahahahaha

> CHOKING HAZARD -- Children under 8 yrs. can choke or suffocate on uninflated or broken balloons. Adult supervision required. Keep uninflated balloons from children. Discard broken balloons at once.

that... is pretty much as far away from a balloon as one can get

I'm make sure not to let anyone under 3 play with this "toy" :D
I still can't get over "this toy is a marble"
So is this Spyderco's official Amazon page? (I don't know anything about how Amazon works)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog done for science, but it's for close vote review. Comparing the message from the previous revision, looks like it depends on the type of the review queue.

8:29 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange I wonder if there's a ball bearing for a detent...
but there's no reason it would be removed unless you disassembled it

8:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek There isn't.
And there is certainly no balloon.

Or so you think

@MetaAndrewT. Sorry for bothering you with the same thing twice - I have recently added a bounty to this question: Could the search link in the modal window be customizable? Your suggestion in a comment seems very reasonable to me, maybe you'd be willing to post it also as an answer?
In that way, it would be easier for other users to give some feedback on that suggestion (by commenting or voting).

10:46 AM
@Martin I'll consider it, but the page that I propose also cannot be edited by mods. It a generic "how to search" page, though it explains the search syntax better.

Rob
11:12 AM

@MetaAndrewT. Still, it can be modified by CMs. For example, on Mathematics it was customized: math.stackexchange.com/help/searching

Rob
@forestdistrustsStackExchange The above contains none of those hazards.

@Rob That's what they want is to think

@Rob I love that it actually calls it a toy.
I mean, that has got to backfire on them.
And my god, if any child chokes on a Spyderco tactical knife...

@forestdistrustsStackExchange uh...

11:19 AM
I'm pretty sure "choking" is the least of their problems.
@JourneymanGeek They call it a choking hazard. I mean... how?

That's exactly what I was going to say
@forestdistrustsStackExchange dosen't say what they'd choke on, or what the hazard is

Well, they do say the toy contains a small marble. And that it is a small marble.

I blame the algorithm

Just a very sharp reverse-S manual release folding tactical "marble".
@JourneymanGeek I don't think it's an algorithm! I think they put that in there.
Because none of the other Spiderco products contain that warning.

Rob

so uh, wondered something about account creation: I know auto-flagging is a thing, especially when it comes to socketpuppet-account or accounts with same ip, but how would you manage that in a shared household? (eg: family member, friends living there indefinitely, etc)

Wouldn't it raise a flag/make some mods/bot auto ban/flag a new account with the same ip or? I also don't want my and other people account to be merged by accident, which would make things complicated
not sure how to approach this

@NordTheLoftyWizard Just don't use the exact same email and don't interact with each other's posts
There's ways to fix a 'accidental' merge, which apparently involves much cursing and swearing by devs
I'd worry more about 'socking' by accident than an accidental merge

@JourneymanGeek hmm, so you're saying we should take care of never interacting with each other post? (the email part is obvious yeah) that's the only thing to worry about then?

@NordTheLoftyWizard for most part

welp, this is gonna be weird but I hope there won't be hiccup
@JourneymanGeek we can still chat on the same part of the site though? (eg: comment or chat in rooms, etc)

11:55 AM
I've heard of a grand total of one accidental merge (via twitter) and it was fixed
@NordTheLoftyWizard Lots of people share a connection or workplace or home
so... as long as there's no voting fraud or silly stuff... its likely to be fine

@JourneymanGeek gotcha
@JourneymanGeek right, hopefully there won't be :D

Just don't share the browser .... only the connection ...

@rene yeah of course (we all have our own stuff anyway). Just sharing same ip/isp for now

I've run aibobot and my main on the same PC at times (to check non mod view) and not have any issues yet

@NordTheLoftyWizard yeah, I assumed that was obvious but better safe then sorry

11:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek probably because you're more known and trusted than a new user ;) that and, you did mention clearly on your other profile the detail of which is which
@rene yeah, i appreciate the advice/feedback of course :D

@NordTheLoftyWizard would help for manual merges, not automatic ones :D

@JourneymanGeek indeed, that's what I thought too (which is why I asked to be sure)
@forestdistrustsStackExchange this is the most dangerous toy I seen yet (and not counting the pre-2000 era with the radioactive toys...)
they still somehow sell "active" product with ions in them btw (although not sure about toys)...

Look up a couple of "ions" active product on youtube and amazon, it should surprise a couple people here, probably... (eg:eye patch, bath towel, wrist band...)
@forestdistrustsStackExchange you could keep a list of questions/answer you did...even if the id changed, the title probably wouldn't, and thus would be easier to find again (at least for your own memo or something)

12:15 PM
@NordTheLoftyWizard its the other way around :D

@JourneymanGeek you mean "the id wouldn't probably change, but the title will"?

@NordTheLoftyWizard yes
postids don't change, titles could

@JourneymanGeek isn't the reverse that happened to forest? I mean the ids (at least from what I understood from their post on meta) changed on some posts they did
unless I misunderstood

@NordTheLoftyWizard Forest was using disposable accounts and lost track of em
entirely his own carelessness :D

@JourneymanGeek oh, yeah i see what you mean

Is there anything similar to bounties for per-site metas

@EkadhSingh nope, sorry :(

Guess I’ll have to just add an answer and hope it brings some attention to the question then. :(

Yes, perhaps you should have waited for a rich benefactor to post the bounty on your behalf; at least you can be sure it will be seen, and it already has a fair number of votes - as for actually getting it implemented, that remains to be seen.

So apparently Marc Gravell has the Constable badge over on Code Golf. There's no mention of this on our meta, nor on MM. Just wondering if anyone knows how that happened?

Look at sheriff on SO.

What about it?

Essentially, we mucked with badges a few months ago and when it ran, it didn't exclude staff, so there's a bunch of people who shouldn't have those badges but do.
@cairdcoinheringaahing there's several staff members with badges there.

@Catija But Marc was awarded Constable in 2012, and is the only staff member with it. If if were something like that, I'd expect Jeff/Joel/other staff from that time to also have it

Not really. Only people who were awarded the diamond the "wrong" way got the badges.
The award date is when they qualified for the badge, not the day it was awarded.

@NordTheLoftyWizard Those early radioactive toys are actually not at all dangerous. The amount of radiation from those was less than a single day out in moderate sunlight.
Assuming you're referring to that nuclear physics science kit.
The actual reason why it wasn't a business success is because it was so expensive.
The "outrage" about the supposed dangers only came up later, despite the fact that it's harmless.
