12:53 AM
Hello :)

Morning

Hey JG. How's it going?

Not too bad - no night shifts all week :D

You must be living right :)

naw, we're no longer loaning people we can't actually afford
(for now)

1:07 AM
That sounds like a good rule to live by :)

Well - I've always felt if your understaffed, its a management failure ._.

Absolutely it is. It's a failure to adequately plan for growth, or a failure to retain.

We have the headcount for 1 more (and having that would be a massive boost for both morale and efficency) but... we don't seem to have hired them yet...

or a failure to communicate why you need more staff

Uh, yeah, so... I'm the resident pain in the ass about all 3 at work :D

1:09 AM
I'm pretty pleased with our hiring progress the last few months. We managed to onboard a total of 7 in about 90 days
or will have, once the next two are done.
(with training. they're all hired and stuff)

Yeah, I get

we dont have the same competition for talent that our eng teams have to struggle with though.

TBH, we need about 6 months to get someone up to speed to the point they're able to handle ... full scale stuff blowing up

Absolutely. I've decided that our ramp time for bringing on a CM here is about 5 months.

Well - some aspects of SE CMing is... unique

1:11 AM
A little less if they're from the community. But not a LOT less.

Oh, I've no illusions about that.

Yeah, I spend a lot of time explaining why hiring from the community doesn't cut that to, like, 1 month.

We'll have an easier time with the 'soft' skills presumably, but we'd have no clue about the hard skills

We can skip things like what the network is for, how mods work, etc.... but there's a mindset shift that has to take place, and a WHOLE bunch of CM specific processes and tools.

We'd have an easier time, on say meta and teams - but mechanical stuff (and admittedly I demphasise that for new mods) ... is different

1:13 AM
way way way way wayyyyyy too many tools. Unindexed. Unorganized. Random URL-based tools.

lol
I'm nooooot surprised

My team is so sick of hearing me gripe about this.
I mentioned it in front of Yaakov, right after our 1 on 1 in which I railed about it for 10 minutes..... and he did the virtual equivalent of rolling his eyes and looking for the exit.

Well - I suspect part of it (and ironically this was seen as a good thing) was basically a mix of "this sounds like a good idea, build it!" and "ugh, we can't wait, lets just throw together an MVP"
So you'd have stuff like shog building a absolutely brilliant tool for finding voting rings...
then it never seeing the light of day after being used for one particularly sticky incident on AU

yup. and as a result, it's over here in this pile of userscripts, totally differently from our integrated tool sets.

also, some of those trickle down to us... and they're a bit... unpolished

1:16 AM
And unless you're JNat or Catija (both of whom have minds like steel traps), you have no idea those tools even exist.

Well - also, there's the period that basically from what I can tell both engineering and the CM team was in the wilderness
@Philippe well - they both worked with Shog

yup.

and part of the 'fun' part of your team is they lost a bunch of foundational mindshare over a half decade or so

But fwiw, 2022 is going to be the year of paying down some tech debt. Hope to get some of these tooling issues sorted.

Which is good :D
(and ugh, promised for years, then pesky things like "we need cuts for the survival of the company" got in the way)

1:19 AM
Yeah, but we're financially on a more stable footing now.
And Teresa is serious about investing in tech.

@Philippe tbh - I've been critical of that cause a lot of it before was self inflicted ._.

Yeah, I get that.

So, looking forward to it, cautiously :D
We all benefit from stuff like that working well, and more efficient processes
(hell, the election improvements were... quite a few years on the simmer)

Yeah, and Rosie is chomping at the bit for v2 of that.

and from what I've heard over the years, the old processes were uh....
a massive slog to put it mildly

1:22 AM
I also think that there are probably some tasks that staff is handling right now that we don't need to be. There's room for the creation of new user roles, if we can identify what they should be.
JG, thats' an appropriate descriptor
I had Rosie walk me thjrough some of that.

@Philippe I think there's been talk of that on meta in the past

i would be shocked if there hadn't been.

But one of the consequences of 'weak' company support is - I think the mod (teams) to some extent manage pretty independently

Oh absolutely, in most cases, thats' very true

and in some cases - get borrowed across sites for brain-trustage

1:26 AM
We do see some cases where a mod team has been isolated and wasn't aware that we could help with a particular problem, because they weren't communicating cross teams.

(to some extent - a little more than we should. I think some of the old-timers like myself need to get used to the idea we can CM-escalate again, since we got into the mindset of avoiding it for everything but the most extreme situations)

and in addition to standardization of that sort of process, we need to standardize on our internal processes around that as well.
The good news is.... these are all fascinating and fun problems to have.
We have an embarassment of riches in that there's so much cool work that could be done, that we just get to pick the coolest of it :D

That can be a good problem or a bad problem :D

Half full, Journeyman. It's half full

(and while I'm not going to push for anything specific cough - having a platform to 'flag'/annotate a user across sites would be nice, and solve a few problems :D )

1:29 AM
Noted, and I agree.
That one isn't going to be my call in the end (Des owns product for the public platform) but I certainly get to lobby

We have a buncha informal processes for that

Yeah, need a ton of tools to support mods ... anti-socking, all sorts of things
network annotations, etc.

hah, I consider sock detection a black art mostly based on instinct >_>

It is currently, but it doesn't have to be. We had some great tools for that at reddit
creating versions of some of those are definitely on my wish list

(I mean, one of the tells is "how people write" and that's a hard problem in an era of proxies and disposable email addresses)
I suspect it would be appreciated too :D

1:35 AM
At reddit, we had a great team called "Anti-Evil Engineering", headed by a dude named Chris Slowe (who was the founding engineer and later became CTO there). He was BRILLIANT
They did things with data that I swear involved two witches and the eye of a newt.

Yeah, I was looking at applying there :D

As long as they weren't using hen's teeth.

I actually have a Jar of eye of newt ....
(which apparently are mustard seeds)

Slowe is the underappreciated genius of reddit.

One finds proper Genii are often

1:37 AM
When the definitive history is written, I hope he gets top billing because he's gotten little credit for it so far.

Till they die, which kinda makes being appreciated a little too late ._.

JG - i was gonna ask what a newt was anyway
And Catija, hens teeth? What are you, a luddite? Nobody's used hen's teeth for sock detetction since the late 90s

@Philippe apparently an amphibian with eyes that arn't much good for making portions and detecting socks.
Granted, unless your sock was a vampire, mustard seeds are not very useful

You think. What if your sock just disliked mustard? I'd cave in to a sockhunter who had, for instance, truffle oil. I dont sock, but i'd give in to get away from the smell.

@JourneymanGeek if socks are vampires, pointy (preferably wooden) sticks are the best way to deal with them :)

1:40 AM
See, and there's the problem. We have this dumb HR rule about pointy sticks.
Catija will probably say that it's a good rule and meant to protect people like her from people like me. Don't listen to her.

@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica apparently (and I suspect the muppet count alludes to this), if you throw seeds in front of a vampire, they need to stop and count them
@Philippe Some traditions ought to be respected.

But some ought not :P

"This isn't a pointy stick, its a sharp stake"

@Philippe except I didn't have that on my job posting so I don't get that protection.

I like you. That's solution thinking.
Catija? oh reawlllllllllly? I need to keep a list of who had that and who didn't.

1:42 AM
@Catija Now I'm wondering how long that was there for
I distinctly remember it

Pay no attention to me writing these names down.

and I wasn't really paying attention there until <unnamed former employee> talked me into applying the first time

It predated me but somehow got dropped on my specific posting. I think it was back on Cesar's

JG, I do too, oddly. I think it might have been on the earliest version that i saw of mine (when i was hired, into the T&S role) but wasn't on the official final one.

Not that Philippe pays attention to that.

1:43 AM
At all.
Not that Philippe pays attention. <---- FTFY

Heh.

@Philippe Well - If I recall - UFE talked me into it the time Cat and Cesar got hired. so I'm certain it was there around then...

@Catija, these chocolate chip cookies are pretty good, I'm just sayin'.

Those kitchen sink ones sounded nice, too.

They did indeed.
The photo did not capture the sheer scale of these things.

1:45 AM
.... I don't remember any mention of a kitchen sink...

Hahaha.

/me hands in his "SE work here page gawker badge"

The cookie is easily three times the size of my iphone.

Journeyman, my team was super sweet and sent me some cookies by special delivery today. And they weren't poison or anything!

1:47 AM
My cookies are always small. I like mini desserts so I make small cookies and mini cupcakes. I like people feeling like they can try just one... and then they eat a dozen without realizing it.
2

@Philippe as far as you know.

We didn't touch them.

@Catija amateur move

True, could be time delayed, but I gave one to the landlord and checked in on her later.

You need to slowly build up a resistance...

1:48 AM
Small cookies!

I am a fan of small cakes. Cupcakes are proof that there is a $Diety and she loves us, i've decided.

lol
@Catija have I ever mentioned that cousin of mine? :D
the one who quit as an engineer and ended up a baker?

you have a cousin that's a diety?
oh

Hahaha. Minis are easier to decorate.
@JourneymanGeek no! You didn't! That's awesome!

@Catija I'll PM you, I think her site has her home address. :D

1:50 AM
I have a friend who was a cop but gave it up to run a Cookie Boquet store. That sounds like the beginnings of a joke but nah.
I got nothing.

It'd only be a joke if it were a donut shop.

Well, i was trying to find some way to make it work, and I just couldn't.
I plead lack of sleep.

lol
that's usually my excuse!

well you can share!
That excuse is big enough for both of us

I can't really tell people to sleep more. I'm usually the one people are yelling at to go to bed.

1:54 AM
Speaking of which, isn't it about time for you to go to.... oh wait. No. It's early.
what the heck, i'm never in chat this early.
My usual haunting hour is around 4AM

@Catija Well in theory, if I sleep when I should be awake at night, the entire system will fail and we'll be overrun with uh... wait, the borders are closed :D
$unspecified bad things will happen

@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica It's Philippe's fault.

Yeah. I have a bad habit of only sleeping from ~1 or 2 until 7 for a week straight and then I'll just drop off at 9 one night and sleep 10 hours.

lol
I wake up at 6.00 for first shift. 8 for the second...
if I do the night shift, its get home from work at 10, collapse in bed, and sleep till 4 ._.

2:01 AM
Ha. Probably.

OK, i gotta bail. Gonna go feed my piggies and read for a while :)
TTYL

Night!

@Philippe out of curiosity, are you reading anything interesting?

2:42 AM
FYI @ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3, this old Q of yours seems ?
(chat message because I'm not 100% sure I'm looking in the right place)

2 hours later…
Rob
4:23 AM
@Philippe We calculated the average number per day, and it was much less than that:
Aug 31 at 13:54, by Rob
They hire an average of one person per five days (assuming no skipping): 13×365÷959 = 4.95

4:43 AM
whats up @Rob haven't been on in a while
i see my rep hasnt changed lol no residual rep coming in

Rob
I was reading through the backscroll but then something came up, Hi though!
You need ~1000 posts to get a small trickle; I gained 20 rep on two sites this week.

dam!

Rob
Good to see you again, unfortunately I am doing something else ATM; we can chat in a few hours ... shrug

@JcbJoe MSE is too small for much residuals
Unless you post stuff that gets quoted and isn't a community faq

1 hour later…
6:17 AM
@Rob with 2300 posts, I get maybe 10 rep a day from random upvote on old post, rarely more. (on MSE)
@bobble nope, they never fixed it. It's rather a perfect candidate for this close reason:
> No longer reproducible

> The problem described here can no longer be reproduced. Changes to the system or to the circumstances affecting the asker have rendered it obsolete. If you encounter a similar problem, please post a new question.
They changed the /about page, and the bug is "gone".
Sadly I can't vote to close it myself, for some reason I've cast close vote in the past on my question.
@Philippe maybe he's acting under cover to catch cookie thieves? :D
hehe it's 23:23 tie with Philippe

6:41 AM
@Philippe No, twice as big as needs be ;)

6:57 AM
wonders what's being so big
Catija's cookies?

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 You can just follow the reply arrow :P

o/

morning! How's life?

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Your ego
@Tinkeringbell morning. Could've been better. I'm attending the memorial service for a colleague later today :(

7:15 AM
@Luuklag Ah, yeah... that's no fun.

Hmm weird, anyone knows why this movie suddenly got attention? Just read article about it in my local newspaper, and the Wiki page says "as of October 2021 the film remains unreleased". What bumped this out of the grave? lol

@Tinkeringbell yeah, its all really strange still. He passed away friday, just like that. Super healthy guy, biked the "elfstedentocht" last summer, and then just had a heart attack

@Tinkeringbell meh, too many clicks. :D
@Luuklag if only! :P

@Luuklag On the other hand... one of the best ways to go, if you ask me :D
Sucks for the ones left behind though.

@Luuklag sorry to hear... did you tell about it here in the past? If not, what happened?
@Luuklag oh, that's scary. Did his family decide to check what happened in details? (autopsy, etc)

7:26 AM
@Tinkeringbell yeah that's true. At least no suffering like cancer. And tbh beats alzheimers or something for the relatives as well.
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 No I haven't. A colleague of mine passed away last friday early morning. He was 67.
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 I don't know. But it doesn't make a difference either way, does it?

@Luuklag colleague from work?

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 yup

@Luuklag it can, e.g. if they find it's genetic, his relatives better check they don't have this, and maybe it can be treated.

Another turd has been polished: meta.stackexchange.com/posts/370621/revisions
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 hmmm yeah, thats true

@Luuklag this happened with my boss (CEO), one of his sons died all of a sudden in the age of 30 or so, few years ago. Turned out he had some very rare heart failure which can be genetic. Luckily the others don't have it.
@Luuklag not really a turd, it's on topic just.... way too broad and messy. With proper guidance, OP might be able to re-post something that will make sense and even be helpful. :)
So that's worth polishing, IMO
Hey! You took away the love. :(
:P

@Luuklag I need help... how does 'high rep users with moderation privileges' abbreviate to 'HRYMP'?

@Tinkeringbell y = u ?

@Tinkeringbell VERY CAREFULLU
I mean carefully

@JourneymanGeek carefylly ;)

7:44 AM
Ues that

@Luuklag That's still missing a letter for the W (with) then...

More seriously, and cause I do it myself, I suspect he acronymned semi phonetically

And it's weird if it were a typo, as it's repeated more than once.
gotta run, standup :P

Make up your mind, are you running or standing?
2

@Tinkeringbell meh these kinda words often get left out

7:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek I suspect most people find it fairly difficult to run while sitting down.

@Tinkeringbell OP changed y to u

Update: it is now HRUMP, which is, I suspect, the sound many users with moderation privileges make when encountering a post in need of moderation.

@RyanM you can jump though
@RyanM also sounds like Trump! :D
Riddle time! What's written in this picture? ;)

8:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek Running, then standing :P
@Luuklag Lovely :) Now my brain can rest in pieces :)
@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 Follow the rules or die?

8:22 AM
@Tinkeringbell almost! :D

@RyanM more of a sigh

Sight of a sigh.

8:48 AM
People make sounds when they see such posts? XD

@Ollie gone
@Ollie looks like @Catija got to that one before I did

@JNat heh, can you see who nuked the account?

yeah, Cat did

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 "I felt a disturbance in the force, like a slight case of indigestion, or a post that gave me heartburn...'

8:54 AM
Exactly!

.....
Nothing happens all day...
then I get an email asking me to pull some data, one minute later I get a whatsapp for another request that's almost the same, and a third person letting me know I have both requests...
while I'm typing out the query(s) that they sent ._.

Always fun if people try to rush you ;) That's when you get quality code/queries ;)

Rob
9:51 AM
@RyanM We used to do it, it's called Office Chair Racing: youtu.be/SoGLrznAvTg?t=42 youtube.com/watch?v=dlH6JhtkqBo

@Tinkeringbell I literally have nothing else to do :D

10:34 AM
Journey, Tink, is it worthwile to migrate this to MSO? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/370630/…

moved to MSO

10:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Lucky you :P

3 hours later…
1:35 PM
@JNat I did? Huh.. I don't go out of my way to do that. I've destroyed a couple of spammers on MSE but I haven't killed their network accounts.

1:53 PM
Yet.

@Catija you destroyed their MSE profile, and someone else had destroyed their SU profile... and that was all the profiles they had ;P

@JNat Ah. So I'm going to blame @JourneymanGeek for half of it :P

fair enough

2 hours later…
5:07 PM
@JNat heh, in such cases no need to call you. ;)

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 to be fair, I think they both got it after I was pinged, so

1 hour later…
6:24 PM
@JourneymanGeek Without context, I thought this was about elections.

2 hours later…
8:32 PM
@bad_coder re your flag: we can't correct typos either. If I've done it right though, you should now be able to put up a new bounty instead (and be refunded the rep for the first one)
PSA: I'm not going to always fix anyone's bounties, and not every mod may agree this was something that needed fixing. don't see this as an invitation to just flag for any minor typo, you may end up with declined flags. XD

woo free advertising

@KevinB ?
That first bounty had been up for a whole hour XD. So yeah, i guess the first hour is on me? :p

;)

8:50 PM
@Tinkeringbell Thanks I didn't know mods couldn't change bounty messages, but I did find an answer saying so right afterwards when I was looking into a possible bug.

Anyway, ROUND OF DRINKS ON ME EVERYONE!!! I made 10k rep this weekend.
Special acknowledgement to @Tinkeringbell who certainly had a lot of patience and kindness with me throughout my participation on MSE.

@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica brews a cup of Affogato for @EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica

🖲

9:09 PM
Is there any way to put Roman numerals into tag names?

@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica MDCLXVI

Sure, but they all get lowercases and look really weird (at least to me)

doubtful

9:29 PM
@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica if you read enough of them the number comes to mind without having to think or do math, whether upper or lower case.

iii

1 hour later…
10:52 PM
I saw a hilarious bad edit involving Roman numerals a month or two ago. I can't remember which site it was, or the exact details, but it was something like: "The claim in part I is incorrect". The editor changed it to "The claim in part I am incorrect".
