Q: Searching for text in smart quotes in dumb quotes doesn't work? “test: text” “xtest xtext” "dumb quotes"

Joshua TaylorIt appears that if smart quotes (“”) are used in the title of a question, then searching for the quoted text that includes a colon in quotes in a search doesn't show the question. Noting that the title of this question contains “test: text” and “xtest xtext”, compare these two searches: "test: ...

@Aibobot that’s awesome!

It is ;p

What does failing audits do?
Any penalty? I’ve never gotten any audits

@Stormblessed eventually get you review banned

@Aibobot can failing non-audits cause that?

1:09 AM
which is temporary of course and needs something like 3-5 failed audits in a short time
@Stormblessed ... I do not parse what you mean by failing a non audit

That seems really hard to trigger

snort
I got it on my main account on a site where was a mod
;p

@Aibobot Doesn’t recommending deleting or not deleting a thing contrary to the others count toward that?
@Aibobot wait what
Oh you’re @Journeyman ?

(There was a time where review queue thresholds were tweaked. )
@Stormblessed no
the whole idea of the review system is to average out decisions
@Stormblessed I try to make this as obvious as possible - I use this account on my work PC

@Aibobot oh so big brother doesn’t know about you?

1:13 AM
oh
uhm, two reasons

Oh it’d be much worse if your other account were compromised
I guess?

I lost job -3 in a bit of a hurry so I'm slightly paranoid about handing over my PC in a rush
Job -2 had me running a horribly dodgy spare PC which I didn't trust
That too

ALSO in theory, this lets me see things as a normal, theoratically low rep user
but I suck at that. I get lazy, post an answer and next thing I know, I have lots of rep on something that took me 30 seconds to write...
(see aibobot's SU account)
@Stormblessed well yeah
and my main account uses a google log in
and that getting compromised would be much worse
I'm slowly weaning myself off their services except for android and gmail, made easier by the fact that google keeps killing off stuff I use :D
I do like having an SSO for stuff (and google login lets me use TFA, which is nice...)
At some point I need to make a case for a self hostable SSO option outside enterprise
but feels like its not the right time yet

What is SSO

1:23 AM
Single Sign on
Traditionally and internally, SE used openid
Openid is a bit of a monumental mess
but it was relatively easy to run
Its one of those early decisions, like gravatar that made sense at the time, and when they got down to refactoring the code, got the chop

My exercise in finding Wikipedia pages on increasingly obscure geographic locations reached its end.
Scratch My Arse Rock, (also known as Kiss Me Arse Rock), is a popular fishing location off the coast of Palmerston Island, an atoll belonging to the Cook Islands archipelago. The rock's name was reputedly conferred by William Marsters, the 19th-century progenitor of the Marsters family, which continues to inhabit and administer Palmerston Island today. The waters off Scratch My Arse Rock are noted for their abundance of parrotfish. Geographical data for the rock is available from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency at Bethesda, Maryland, United States, to be found at Geographical Names...

Looks like I can literally post "+1" comment on SoFT now...
@Martin I only posted that as.. umm.. general suggestion. But if it's about MathOverflow, I probably won't touch there because AFAIK they have special privilege. You're free to quote (or steal) my answer on there though...

4:04 AM
@Stormblessed not all SE sites have audits. Failing audits consecutively will get automatic review ban. "Failing non-audits" (because you'll never fail, only "dispute" the review) on consecutive clear-case reviews might get a manual review ban by a mod.

4:22 AM
I'm new to reviewing posts. When I review one, I get about 7 lines of somewhat helpful but still vague guidance. Why do the review instructions not link to the guidelines?

4:38 AM
@ScottMcPeak that sounds like the start of a great meta question

I was just looking into that, searching for existing questions. I'm mostly active on Stack Overflow. Should I ask in meta.SE or meta.SO?

Well if your're talking about broader site mechanics - I'd say MSE

In my mind it seems broader, but I've only seen the reviewer interface on SO, so I don't know if my concern applies to other sites.
I've only asked one question on MSE before and someone said I should have asked on MSO. But it was still upvoted so I can't tell if that was a minority opinion.

Well SO does have some differences

FWIW, it's the same on all SE sites (minus "Triage" and "H&I" which are only available on SO)

4:44 AM
Invisible mod hat firmly on....
So..there's three classes of meta questions

bug, bug, and bug

stuff specific to a certain question (goes on per site meta), mechanics (main meta is better but not off topic on per site meta)
and culture
culture is squishy
"Is it ok" can have a broad usability across the network
and then one site can do stuff differently
and being squishy - folks interpret it differently
If you really feel it belongs to another site though, a migration close vote or flag matters
a comment, less so
So in a lot of words @ScottMcPeak its a minority opinion not backed up by action

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I'll go ahead and ask on MSE.
There is an existing question that is very similar, but doesn't seem to be active. Is there anything to do besides upvote it?

5:00 AM
hmm
I don't believe in meta bounties
so... sadly enough, I don't think so

5:11 AM
That is unfortunate. The current situation is people are asked to review posts without much guidance, then they are likely to fail an audit due to ignorance (like I did on my second review; details above in this chat room), which feels like being punished for following the instructions available.

@ScottMcPeak here's the tricky thing - asking a question that goes "I'm aware of the previous question here but these things are different"
I actually think the "less experienced user" experience is pretty much on SO's mind these days
So it might work better than a question from 2014

So, just ask it even though I know it's mostly duplicating? (And link it of course)

and well
add some value to the new question I suppose
as I said, its tricky ><

Ok, I'll attempt to additionally convey the new user perspective, which is mostly absent from the existing question.

6:03 AM
my local grocery store is on fire with the puns

@ScottMcPeak Nice. SE doesn't do nearly a good enough job of linking relevant documentation.

Yes; glad you agree!

I think it's also related to the fact that the help center isn't very fleshed out. Most of the information about tools and expectations is contained in meta posts, where people won't find them. A lot of them should be turned into help center articles and linked from the UI.

Agree. I've tended to find most information by using google, which usually takes me into meta.SE questions and answers. The help articles seem to be a bit thinner, when they even apply, than the Q&A content.

@ScottMcPeak when he agrees with me, I always feel a little concerned
@ScottMcPeak I think I've talked about this since 2015 or something . . . help center articles seem to be for people that are just starting out with the site, and considering they naturally aren't all that invested yet, it's kinda an overkill for them. When someone passes the basics and wants to find out more about flagging or reviewing or basically anything past the ultimate new user stage, the information is so dispersed out
They're useful when you know they contain some information that you can link to, but as learning resources, not so sure.

The help center needs a complete overhaul. I might write up some suggestions when I have time.
@M.A.R. That says more about you than about me. ;)

8:21 AM
I'm waiting for the long posts that will eat up the time you'd spend on conquering the world.
I'm a good Samaritan, as Brad Pitt would say.
@Mithrandir Thank God we don't agree on that

...instead of conquering the world, I have to go wash dishes and then race around a forest track on a bicycle. Back later.

Well that's like, step 1.
TTYSTLWIAAW.

@ScottMcPeak tbh that's a blind spot for a lot of us. We're too used to how things work

Certainly understandable.

8:38 AM
Such a dog thing to do.

So, @Mithrandir has provided an answer I agree with and that has been upvoted twice. But the feature hasn't been implemented yet, and if I accept that answer, perhaps it looks like the issue is resolved, nothing to see here. Should I wait on accepting? This question indicates I should wait.

wait for 6-8 weeks...

Ok, will do.

On a feature request, there's no need to accept an answer that isn't an official "yes" or "no" - it's simply an addition to the request.

@ScottMcPeak Accepting is entirely your choice. There is advice and some conventions, like waiting for a couple of days and definitely not accepting an answer too soon. It's not as consequential as you think, anyway. On meta, I'd be surprised to see an accepted answer unless it's voted 50 already or something, so I guess yeah, it would send out a message that this issue was resolved

Q: Bug: bs ads are not rendering on SO

plr108For me at least, some ads are not rendering and a URL is shown instead: Is anyone else experiencing this bug? Here is one URL where I see this bug: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/57826099/how-to-stop-client-error-with-redux-saga Here is the ad URL I am seeing instead of an ad: https...

Hey, I thought it's literally "BS ads are not rendering on SO"

Is this where Geek would normally say 'language'?

He does that?
I thought he only says "actually" with a dramatic voice while staring into the horizon

Now that you ask.. I don't know if he does it personally or if he taught other chatizens to do so instead...

5:33 PM
LANGUAGE! "chatizens" insults my chatizenmanhoodshipism.

Hmm. Pancake.

One of them has four stars. I call nepotism.

How :/

And I have starred that too.

I can't make the math add up.

5:35 PM
So it's um, mind control.

Ah. That explains why I lost my train of thought.
Have you seen it?

Was it that 777 that crashed into some things?
Don't worry, Denzel Washington and Chris Pine are on it

Why does every conversation with you ends up with movie references? :/

Aug 16 at 5:28, by Journeyman Geek
Ah, language

See. I knew it.

5:37 PM
This was so British-Victorian-era-linguist of him

It works though.

I imagine he said it in Attenborough's voice

Shorter than what you did in TAS this morning too ( I liked how you handled that, btw)
@M.A.R. That's a nice voice :D

@Tinkeringbell Can't help it. The only other concept in my mind is boring organic chemistry
My English self, at least

@M.A.R. Ah. Does that include alcohol?

5:38 PM
Sure does

Then organic chemistry can't be boring ;)

Alcohol attacking electrophiles and not being arrested for assault and battery.
Chemistry's cool like that.

See... and perhaps there can be explosions too...

Oooh. Easy enough.

Like that famous movie director always does, but whose name I can't remember.

5:40 PM
The best part is a chemist learns how to do explosions by pouring water on them
@Tinkeringbell Michael Bay?
He loves explosions. And he's probably not such a good person IRL.
As if his Hollywood alter ego is any better.

Oh well... Everyone has a few skeletons in their closet after all...
I don't know, the name sounds familiar, but I can't remember it being really bad.

Well, I can't see any skeletons, but the way he treats women in literally all of his movies has lots of misogynistic vibe to it
It has gone well beyond fan service or whatever excuse people came up with. Because that was the 2000s.
@Tinkeringbell He just makes mega blockbusters that probably involve any part of your body as a reaction except the brain. Bad Boys franchise, Transformers, TMNT etc.

@M.A.R. Oh. Hmm... I should watch and judge for myself, perhaps. Some people are very easily offended ;)

I think you should have established by now that I'm not one of those ;)
Maybe the opposite, actually. One of the careless oafs who sometimes cross a line, get weird looks, and say "Oh crap what did I do wrong this time"
The last movie I watched was TMNT 1 that had any connection to him (he produced it, not directed)

Yeah, that's true... so are you just echoing reviews or is that your opinion too? :P

5:46 PM
Boy the turtles were ugly
@Tinkeringbell I personally have a low opinion of people who don't try, then excuse their not trying, and even glorify it. It's not that he wants to produce quality material but misses, it's that he intentionally want to grab some cash from non-suspecting movie watchers

@M.A.R. Yeah, I think I saw enough trailers to know that too :D

It is true though that since I haven't been tortured lately by his movies, my view might be a little bit skewed

XD.
I don't have time for movies soon, I think. I ordered too many books, I have too many unfinished crochet projects and new one that I want to make, and I'm sorting stuff out for my apartment.

@Tinkeringbell Personally, they weren't my taste much anyway. I preferred smaller turtles that ninja'd their way into winning. These were just stereotypical bulletproof (!) bullies
And as is typical for lots of dumb action movies, one moment they're gullible idiots the enemy spins on his forefinger, and the next they're kicking him sky high

Yeah... but that's basically all action movies ;)
lots of explosions and the bad guys always miss their shot.

5:51 PM
Well, I call those dumb action movies. It has become a fixed phrase for me. DAM.
Now, smarter actions movies, like Edge of Tomorrow
That's a movie I'd watch any time
So. Much. Fun!

Doesn't sound familiar either, sorry :(

@Tinkeringbell Well, it's a SAM, not a DAM. It's one of the movies that's not just good, it also appeals to many audiences. If I meet someone new and they ask for a recommendation, that's definitely among my choices. You should try it out some time! After all the crocheting and reading and other fun stuff

other fun stuff? What other stuff is fun? :P

Maybe you should crotchet a book-reader that inserts information into your mind. Saves time.
A bit dystopian, but should work
@Tinkeringbell Playing volleyball non-stop until my arms fall off

@M.A.R. Ouch.
Though if they fall off you probably won't feel them anymore anyways.

5:57 PM
It's not extreme, it's smart, and it gives you information to absorb even after the movie, just like a good novel
Granted, the most memorable movies are typically extreme. Saving Private Ryan, Fight Club, Se7en, even The Dark Knight. But the side effect is they're usually too much for someone not already acquainted with what they decided to watch
BBL dinner

@M.A.R. ends up with "your computer got malware'd"

@M.A.R. Enjoy!
