1:47 AM
@ShaWiz The major power plant in Nevada, US kills over 10,000 people annually.
Globally I wouldn't say millions, but it is a lot.
Compare this with nuclear which has the lowest deaths-per-gigawatt of any power source.

1 hour later…
3:09 AM
@forest Are deaths from meltdowns included in this total?

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Yes, of course. As well as workers falling from ladders during construction. The only meltdown that caused any significant number of deaths was Chernobyl, which was an outdated and scarily-unsafe design even at the time it was built.

Fukushima caused a lot of deaths too...

No, the tsunami (which triggered the meltdown) did.
There has been only a single death attributed to radiation by that power plant failure.

Fukushima was also far past its design life

I'm not sure if this suicidal question on MathOverflow should only be closed instead of deleted, considering it's garnered answers and upvotes...

3:14 AM
Wind energy would have a high death rate if you included birds

Rob
A Forbes article says that it's 10K for all US coal power plants, with nuclear under 100 (that includes mining the Uranium). Other countries (well, one other country) does far worse because they build as fast as possible without wasting time adding scrubbers.

Indeed. Same with transmission towers. But deaths-per-gigawatt includes only human deaths.

@MetaAndrewT. presumably its been brought to the attention of CMs, and MO kinda supposedly has its own folks running things too

> Although there were no deaths from radiation exposure in the immediate aftermath of the incident, there were a number of (non-radiation related) deaths during the evacuation of the nearby population.[225][226] As of February 2014, 15,884 deaths were attributed to the earthquake and tsunami.[227]
From the Wikipedia page on the subject.
Nuclear is surprisingly safe.
And even the biggest meltdowns cause more media panic than actual deaths.
I think a demonstration fusion reactor is actually scheduled to be completed in 2050.
Because right now it's more of an engineering problem than a physics problem.

Rob
The Tokamak ☀️🤛
Due 2025.

3:28 AM
Oh 2025 was it? I know there's one for 2050 too. Maybe that was the production one.
And I think it was a highly tentative date.
Either way, it's pretty damn impressive.
The only downside about fusion is how difficult it is to build the reactors.
But it's remarkably clean energy (and even more clean if we manage to advance far enough to use regular hydrogen instead of tritium as we currently plan to use).

4:17 AM
I noticed I'm not getting that little green icon to notify me if someone upvotes a post anymore, only the red icon to indicate a reply. Is there a reason for this?

Rob
There's stuff that already works (but only for half an hour), and other stuff in the works (past the testing phase); there are quite a few ways of doing it. So many things coming in your lifetime.
@forest That's a ripoff, much better the other way around.

A ripoff of what?

Rob
Something unwanted is called a ripoff, you are being ripped off (that things aren't opposite to how you described - that's what I'd prefer, if it's not going to work correctly).

Oh I see. I blame my tired brain for misinterpreting that.

Rob
🤯

4:26 AM
Oh look a little block with 01f92f in hex.

Rob
It's a hex

"🤯 Shocked Face With Exploding Head Emoji - Emojipedia"
I guess.

Someone really needs to make a userscript that swaps emoji for their names
but that might actually end up being more not less annoying for blind people as their screen reader reads out Shocked Face With Exploding Head Emoji
🐱‍👤

Rob
Cat people, or other word for cat+face ...

I think that's the MS ninja-cat

Rob
4:30 AM
I see two separate emojis, and my OS was updated recently.

Rob
This is what I see (Samsung, Android Pie, updated last week):

Rob
4:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek, yes NC is Windows only (so mobile users are unlikely to be able to see it correctly). Here's the article about it:

1 hour later…
6:13 AM
Is it a bug that the green rep icon isn't showing, or is it some setting somewhere?

6:30 AM
@forest the achievement icon? not configurable. But on which site/answer did you get upvoted but not notified by the rep increase? did you reach daily-rep limit (200)?

@MetaAndrewT. I did not reach the daily limit. Sites were Crypto.SE, AI.SE, and Security.SE.
(i.e. the only sites I've been on today)
Could you test it for me? Upvote one of my answers (then un-upvote, since it's just a test) and I'll be able to see if it's reproducible and that I genuinely am not receiving notifications.

@forest going to upvote in 3.. 2.. 1..

I'm keeping my eye on the rep counter.

already upvoted on Crypto.SE

After refreshing the page, I see the +4 score go to +5, and my rep increase by 10.
But no green icon.

6:36 AM
(unupvoted now..)

Yep saw that. Even when it was upvoted my rep clearly increased, but no icon.
Normally the icon appears instantly.
This is so weird.
Nothing in the network inspector that shows a resource not being loaded.

@forest what green icon exactly?

@ShaWiz I assume the achievement icon that turns to green +[rep increase]

This one?
So you see the +5 just without background? @forest

@ShaWiz I assume the icon didn't even change

6:45 AM
@ShaWiz No, I don't see the +5 at all.

@MetaAndrewT. the icon itself turns to green only if you have new achievement.

It was as if I never got the rep (except for the actual increase in rep and the score change).

If only rep change, only the number appears, icon stay gray.

@ShaWiz my bad on bad wording...

I know.
I mean it's not giving me any notifications for score changes.

6:46 AM
@forest well my first suspect is userscript.

No userscripts installed.

Disable all of them (including non-SE related) and I'm pretty sure all will work well.

Nor any browser customizations. This is Firefox ESR.

oh... ESR... rings a bell.

ESR just means stable branch (ESR = Extended Support Release).

6:47 AM
Think it's not really supported by SE.

It's pretty much the name for standard, non-experimental Firefox.

(they support only actual browsers, not every branch/fork that someone created over the years.)

@ShaWiz It's not a branch like a fork.
ESR is as opposed to an experimental, testing version or an alpha version.

Try with different browser, if it works then you know the issue is with ESR.

Firefox ESR is the version of firefox guaranteed to be stable and supporting as many old systems as possible.
e.g 54.x ESR still works on windows xp for instance

6:49 AM
My guess is that it's a caching issue, and some resource didn't load correctly.

@Magisch still it doesn't mean SE devs have to install it too and add to the list of "browsers to test before deploying", IMO.

Though I did try refresh with cache disabled.
@ShaWiz Firefox ESR is probably the browser they should test.
When someone says "Firefox", they usually mean ESR.

@forest There's no client side cache for those things, if it's cache, it's server side.

@ShaWiz true, but something not working on ESR due to outdating seems far fetched

@ShaWiz Huh? You mean the client doesn't even cache the SVG?
Or the JS files used to open the web socket?

@forest might be, but the code that show the green number is JS, and isn't cached.
@MetaAndrewT. exactly

That's hard to believe. That's thousands of dollars of bandwidth being wasted.

Was going to look for such examples.

Why would the JS be re-downloaded for every page load?
Actually duh, I can just test it.
Yup it's cached. Network inspector tells me that.

@forest maybe it's not, they add ?ver=XXX to it.
Still, the JS code itself runs every time when you reload.

6:52 AM
Well yeah it re-runs, but it's still cached.
Only things not cached were a websocket and its upgrade request, a GET for the page itself, and a Gravatar icon.

A: Should Stack Exchange support ESR releases of Firefox?

Shog9You're reading too much into that FAQ. That page is maintained and updated by the community, and is not intended to be an exhaustive list of browsers and versions that are or are not supported. We're committed to supporting the current version and one previous major version of major browsers. W...

If SE didn't support ESR, it would be a Big Deal(tm).
As in, it would alienate a significant fraction of its users.
And anyway, ESR supports pretty much all standard web tech.

@forest nothing important breaks:
> we aren't testing on them and won't devote much in the way of time or effort to fix problems that crop up in them.

yeah
But anything that breaks would be weird or non-standard JS or browser APIs.

So maybe some design bugs, or icons not appearing. Nothing fatal.

6:55 AM
Something as simple as a green SVG? I can't imagine how that would be unsupported.
Also, I just now got the red icon showing that someone replied to a comment.

One example where bug fix was not backported to ESR:
5
A: Answer overlaps comments underneath

balphaThat's Firefox bug 1356820 hitting you, which was fixed in version 54 but unfortunately not backported to the ESR version. I've added the question/answer layout to the CSS grid things we disable in old Firefoxes, so from the next build on, FF ESR will use the non-grid fallback layout (which does...

Well that's a bug in Firefox. :P
hm... let me try logging out and back in

@forest it's not like the have code that says "if ESR don't show the icon". It's more likely something ESR doing different, and SE didn't test it, and needs to spend time adjusting their code so that it will also work in ESR.
(which might as well break it for other browsers.)

Logged out and back in. Let's see if this works.
@ShaWiz Yeah but I can't imagine what it would be.

Dunno.... JS can be complicated.

6:58 AM
Also, just yesterday the icons worked. No updates to ESR since then, and I highly doubt SE changed its fundamental method of displaying SVGs, only for one color.
I'm pretty sure it's a temporary problem if it's not a known bug.

did you try with different browser? @forest

I only have this one browser. I mean, this and elinks...

Maybe it's server issue, e.g. something with your account, and we're just throwing dirt on ESR for nothing. ;)
@forest and no browser on your phone?

What browser can I install on a pulse-dialing rotary phone?
Yes, I still have one of those and use it exclusively. :)

@ShaWiz I upvoted you

7:02 AM
@forest your index finger? But you need the Phonebook add-on to have something to browse for ...

I guess that's a good point.
And come to think of it, I could use it to ask someone to visit sites for me and report them back. :)

super safe

@ShaWiz never mind... I downvoted you then...

?

Not a voting mob at all ...

7:05 AM
@ShaWiz did you get the green-green text rep?

@MetaAndrewT. no, I was busy elsewhere probably when you upvoted.
I now cleared the +5 I had before.
So ready for new changes.

@ShaWiz upvote in 3.. 2.. 1..

@MetaAndrewT. I see it
Green 10
Lovely
:P
HEY

Can someone try it with me again, now that I logged out and back in?

Give that back!1!!!!

7:09 AM
Try upvoting and downvoting crypto.stackexchange.com/a/71817/54184.

@forest you mean upvote and undo the vote

@ShaWiz Upvote me first!!! (on Anime.SE if possible, since I noticed "user was removed")

...or not? :D

Right.
Yeah please don't DV lol.

Downvote after upvote would still be a downvote.
@MetaAndrewT. hehe, not me.
I deleted only one account so far, ever.
(I think?)

7:11 AM
nah... I don't really care who it was... (and I don't think there's Neo-NH)

@forest you still need a vote?

yeah
Inspect element open, checking the network.

just want to make sure that I still get notified even if it's not surplus yet (-30, +10 < 0)

Check now

I see it go +5.

7:12 AM
With icon?

But no icon.
I mean the score went from 4 to 5.

hmm

And rep from 6288 to 6298.

Well, looks like one more ESR bug then.

Yeah I still can't imagine that'd be the case.

7:13 AM
Try to check with another one having ESR, if same issue, time for bug report on MSE.

Weird thing is, the notification for replies still works.

Since it looks like a popular browser,, SE might adjust their code.

When I click the achievements icon (a trophy? Really?), I see them colored in green.
Which means it should be displaying the unread upvotes until I click that.
@ShaWiz Well also, Tor.SE is entirely about a browser based on ESR.
Might as well shut that SE down if ESR wasn't supported.
Unrelated, but if I looked through someone's recent post history and a morbid curiosity brought me to their most downvoted answers which genuinely are horrible, is it bad to download them?
Would the system assume I'm targeting a specific user with vote fraud?

probably yes

you can download them...

7:20 AM
er
downvote I mean

Using a user profile as a starting point to find posts to cast your votes on is bound to get you into trouble
Or at least invoke the vote reversal script
which makes your effort to downvote posts from a user a waste of your time

I'll just downvote the very worst of them then.
And save the others for another day if I stumble across them again.
It's some guy on AI.SE whose posts (which are almost always already heavily downvoted) are pretty much constantly ranting that AI and ML is useless and a scam. Wrong audience!

Let the community handle it... enough downvote then answer-banned

Eh, answer-bans don't really work for all but the worst offenders.
I've seen a few people on a few sites that even mods wish were gone but don't want to go through the drama of suspending them. All it takes is one or two upvoted answers to reset the ban threshold.

depends on how shallow/deep they are before the ban threshold...

7:30 AM
How often does someone have to be downvoted for it to even work?

Also think not all sites have answer ban at all.

oh
What sites do/don't?

Good question, lol

I dunno... CS50?

whoops, it was changed a while back.

@rene I woke up feeling too bad for breakfast.. it's not that unusual for me to wait a few hours before actually feeling able to eat ;)

@forest Smokey does have !!/watch command, but not sure how to use it since it's using regex syntax.
So I let others use it. :)

@rene Always! Wouldn't want to miss lunch :D

For me food usually help when I don't feel well, even when stomach aches. (Except of course extreme cases, but they're really rare.)

Too much spicy food making my stomach aches instead...

True... so don't eat spicy food? ;)

Either too bland, or too spicy :D

@ShaWiz I dunno, never noticed any significant differences with eating bland food the night before ;)

8:16 AM
@Tinkeringbell better bland than sorry, as they say... :P

8:34 AM
Are questions linking to a survey considered spam?
Or just off-topic for the site they're posted on?

@forest yup
Even if they don't cost money, one still waste time by going there.

Should I flag it as spam then, as opposed to just off-topic?

Feel free to !!/report it.
@forest usually yes... link and we'll see.

@forest well my first suspect is userscript.

@Shree It's Tim Stone's fault.

Doesn't look zoomed in/out in the screenshot.
huh! Repro when I zoom, yes.

@rene they might have Retina display. @Shree is this correct? What device are you using to view the site?
Retina display appears to apply 200% zoom.

Just reply with Unicorn and waffles where you have no clue?

It's a multiple choice thing.

I just checked - after translating the words I didn't know, I got all of them correct on this practice test. Without translating them, though... I'd be lost.
