Globally I wouldn't say millions, but it is a lot.

Compare this with nuclear which has the lowest deaths-per-gigawatt of any power source.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Yes, of course. As well as workers falling from ladders during construction. The only meltdown that caused any significant number of deaths was Chernobyl, which was an outdated and scarily-unsafe design even at the time it was built.

No, the tsunami (which triggered the meltdown) did.

There has been only a single death attributed to radiation by that power plant failure.

A Forbes article says that it's 10K for all US coal power plants, with nuclear under 100 (that includes mining the Uranium). Other countries (well, one other country) does far worse because they build as fast as possible without wasting time adding scrubbers.

Indeed. Same with transmission towers. But deaths-per-gigawatt includes only human deaths.

Nuclear is surprisingly safe.

And even the biggest meltdowns cause more media panic than actual deaths.

I think a demonstration fusion reactor is actually scheduled to be completed in 2050.

Because right now it's more of an engineering problem than a physics problem.

Oh 2025 was it? I know there's one for 2050 too. Maybe that was the production one.

And I think it was a highly tentative date.

Either way, it's pretty damn impressive.

The only downside about fusion is how difficult it is to build the reactors.

But it's remarkably clean energy (and even more clean if we manage to advance far enough to use regular hydrogen instead of tritium as we currently plan to use).

There's stuff that already works (but only for half an hour), and other stuff in the works (past the testing phase); there are quite a few ways of doing it. So many things coming in your lifetime.

@forest the achievement icon? not configurable. But on which site/answer did you get upvoted but not notified by the rep increase? did you reach daily-rep limit (200)?

@MetaAndrewT. I did not reach the daily limit. Sites were Crypto.SE, AI.SE, and Security.SE.

(i.e. the only sites I've been on today)

Could you test it for me? Upvote one of my answers (then un-upvote, since it's just a test) and I'll be able to see if it's reproducible and that I genuinely am not receiving notifications.
