Honest question, 'cause I hear this a lot: where are you getting the idea that you need reputation to answer? With the exception of "protected" questions (which make up < 0.2% of the 15 million questions on the site), you should never need reputation - or even an account - to post an answer; is something telling you otherwise? — Shog9 ♦ 6 hours ago

user315433
But a larger % of views, I suppose. Hm, SEDE should have this data

4:03 AM
Reminds me to use SEDE to find how many users commented "[I'll/will] write [an/the] answer" but in the end haven't done it...

4:14 AM
@if.... fun fact. I once created a low rep sock. Then hnqed. You can never be a clueless noob again.
Actually on hindsight ....eh.

I do that a few times a year, @Justin; it's always good to remind yourself what the site is like for new users. BUT - I already know how to use everything; there's no way to truly experience it as someone who doesn't know how things work. That's why I pay close attention to posts like this: if you're confused about something, I want to know more. — Shog9 ♦ 6 hours ago
It's just a New Game+ for you all

What's wrong with reminding yourself how the site works as a low-rep user?

Nothing's wrong, but low-rep user != clueless about SE user

user315433
Nothing but you don't get the same "everything is confusingly prohibited" experience anyway. When I started over (a bunch of time) the rep restrictions didn't really bother me at all because I wasn't trying to walk into closed doors.

@SensibleAlexander No... but Shog says that.

4:26 AM
@Catija you can reset your rep. Not your acquired knowledge of the internals of the site

But, I would hazard, particularly for a CM with a diamond everywhere, seeing what it's like to be treated like a new user is helpful to remind yourself what sorts of reactions are different towards someone with no experience.

So all a proper sock is the reactions of other users to a low rep, clued in lurker

Moderation fatigue after reviewing VLQ queue for 100 days
then continue to First Post queue

@Catija the big hero banner on so is something a fresh account would catch. Not someone new to SE wandering in thinking it's a forum or not knowing how rep works...
.... Damn it.... Actually...
It feels like a kernel of a meta post.

I'm sure some people are capable of acting like they don't know those things... but the entire point of Shog's comment there is to figure out where those misconceptions arise... he clearly doesn't know... and the OP there doesn't seem willing to actually explain.

4:30 AM

Save the child!!!
@JourneymanGeek Of course not. But the point is, this user came in with preconceived ideas that answering questions requires reputation... where did that come from? That's taking an assumption from... where?

@Catija good question

4:33 AM
And that's what Shog wants to know

Or we can wonder... How do we tell them?

if you browse OP's other meta posts...

@SensibleAlexander Exactly.

huh, oh, I forgot it got deleted wrong OP, different OP

... did he get qbanned?

4:37 AM
@DavidG No, I can't even ask questions, and I get banned. — Justin Chang 7 hours ago

@Catija I also get the idea that he has that 'new users should get a break' idea...

but... red flag
@Simon This is not my only account. I got lots of down votes, could not ask questions anymore. so I had to delete that account. And the count of the down votes of the question that I last saw was around 35. And sure the number is going straight up high. I asked that question 5 months ago, and yesterday I deleted that account. That is why I made this account yesterday. — Justin Chang 6 hours ago

@JourneymanGeek New user experience is pretty crappy on SE in general... I'm sure it's exponentially worse on SO, particularly for users who've never even browsed the site before trying to ask a question. There's a reason it's the top upvoted answer on the SE quality project post from last year... with +408...

So... Not really a new user...
@Catija 'never browsed the site....' feels like part of the problem

It's crappy because we have rules and high bars... I don't know if it can be fixed to "it's welcoming but still having rules and high bars"

4:41 AM
And to me the problem for SO isn't mechanics
@SensibleAlexander you can help people to an extent with rules.

@JourneymanGeek If someone has a problem they need help with... regardless of what the subject is... and particularly if it's urgent... they're not necessarily going to take the time to browse the site... yes, we have a high standard and no, we shouldn't get rid of it... but we also need to force some learning on them regarding what's expected in a first post.

@Catija and they get bored and leave.

Is that a problem?

Well, it's unfriendly to new users presumably
My approach is to always comment when I can

That's about finding the right balance between the indoctrination process and the getting to the point...
Right now, we do very little to inform people how to ask questions either on the question page or before they're given the page to fill in.

4:45 AM
It's unfriendly to new users who ignore the rules. And I'm not the one who can tolerate them after seeing 1278 other new users doing the same
On the other hand, there are many articles which explain how to start on SO

@SensibleAlexander who has time?

@JourneymanGeek exactly.

@Catija can one really describe, even per site universally what a good question is?

I'm not sure... @JourneymanGeek you argue that users should take time to browse the site but don't want them to take time to review some documentation on how to ask a question? ... I think browsing the site takes longer than walking through some help text.
@JourneymanGeek You're making it out as if even one bad question will make it worthless.

@JourneymanGeek hard to say, because there's "Good subjective, bad subjective" problem

4:51 AM
@Catija well on every new site I have been on, I lurk. Then I answer. I'm not typical. I'm just wondering if you can distill down a non Terrible question into something simple
(rhetorical question there)

But experience for answerers are different than the questioners

@JourneymanGeek I think that's sort of what the DAG team is working on... finding out how to improve the asking page so that it gives users the info they need to get started successfully.

I don't mind having colleagues near retirement age who don't care about keeping their skills up to date, but when they replace your working unit tests with "the way they're used to", let's say I had to do my very best to remain calm :(

10:29 AM
@Stijn and? You succeeded? Or has your fist done something? ;)
@Unihedron pfft it's only 6 days. I'll wait at least 60 before even starting to worry.
I accepted the fact they simply work slowly. VERY slowly.

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard I succeeded :p

@Stijn you do have unit testing? I am still fighting a lost battle asking for database schemas to be put under source control.

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard Tim Post has a different time scale

Anyone wanting to adopt a developer pony?

@Derpy yeah, I'm at a point where I carefully choose projects that already do unit testing, else I don't even consider it for a second to start there.

10:37 AM
@Stijn Don't know your current work conditions, so I won't exclude you having worst problems. But at least this one thing seems nice.

@Stijn very true. 1 TP day = ~30 ordinary days.

Often I have to face people that seems to think I add testing or new technologies just to annoy them. And by "new tech" I don't mean anything like "SharePoint based neural network".... just things like Less to improve CSS readability...

@Derpy well, the thing I just wrote about is currently one of my worst problems. So I'm doing pretty good currently, which I am grateful for :)
Demand is significantly higher than supply here, which helps a lot
Have you considered shifting from tester to dev?
Or is that not your kind of thing

@Stijn I am a dev, specialized on web based development. We lack the culture to actually pursue career specialization because it is seen as a bottle neck to resource allocation. Instead, the current trend seems to be converting everyone to full stack dev.

ah right, sorry, somehow thought you were a tester :p
full stack is good if you can train your people to be good at all parts
if you end up with people mediocre at all parts, it's not worth it
but I don't need to tell you that :p

10:49 AM
Now, consider what I just said in my preceding messages and take a guess. How will someone that always worked on DB architecture and now has to work on SharePoint react when he will find that on top of SharePoint I was also trying to use TypeScript?

The OWSTimer sharePoint process (the one running timer jobs) does dll caching. Unless you restart it, even if you change your timerjob dll in the gac, the changes won't be noticed. That one I knew.
What I didn't know is that apparently this cache is able to survive a REBOOT

12:26 PM
@Unihedron feel free to nag Tim... let's see where it gets you. lol

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard the worst thing is that I fear you are right. Basically, it avoids a trip to the GAC by replacing it with a trip to SharePoint config db....

@SensibleAlexander somewhere on these chat rooms I once posted a picture of the same Curly you speak of. And I am not searching for the link now, since it already got its share of comments that time because of that specific easter egg in the game
@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard it may also be that his question does really involve angularjs and he is having integration problems. But he should at least make that clear in the text.

@Derpy nope...

aka you're not alone
But there is some sense in this.... even someone super good in coding might be really bad in cooking, and ask horrible questions there. It's a valid protection layer.
It makes less sense with programming sites, but still... 40 minutes isn't THAT bad.

The very first hat to be earned was Foot of the Rainbow, earned by Eran on Stack Overflow mere minutes after the event began. The first secret hat (spoiler alert) was awarded almost immediately thereafter: Ooh, Shiny! went to Olaf, also on Stack Overflow. A whoppi …

@ShadowtheHedgehogWizard 18+ in norway means max 22% alcohol. Then at 20 (or 21, can't find exactly which) that limit is removed and replaced with the max percent the human body can take before the alcohol becomes dangerous

@Stijn sure! :D

Cocoroco is an alcoholic beverage from Bolivia notable for its extremely high alcohol content by volume, 96%. Cocoroco is sold as "potable alcohol", most often in tin cans. Like rum, cocoroco is made from sugar cane. Unlawful trade of cocoroco and coca leaves occurs across the Altiplano among Aymara communities living in Chile and Bolivia. Cocoroco is illegal in some neighboring countries such as Chile where all alcoholic drinks with over 55% alcohol content by volume are illegal. Notable brands of cocoroco include Caiman and Ceibo. == See also == Cachaça, a typical Brazilian alcoholic beverage...

Here it's beer at 16 and spirits at 18.

@Stijn silly, since there are beers with more alcohol than most other alcoholic beverages.... e.g.
Armageddon is a Scottish beer introduced on 3 November 2012. Ingredients include crystal malt, wheat, flaked oats and Scottish spring water. It is labelled as the world's 2nd strongest beer as of October 2013, after Brewmeister's Snake Venom was released, with an ABV rating of 65%. == References == == External links == Armageddon at brewmeister.co.uk Label of Armageddon...
It's still a beer.... just with 65% alcohol. ;)

3:37 PM
Our laws probably specify the alcohol % but I don't know them by head :p

:)
Anyway in Israel the law is only on paper. Teenagers drink everything, police never enforce the law.
Still, better not give @Zoe a beer. We can't predict the consequences! :P

Just wait and see :D
