Days with fireworks in my area: July 2, 3, 4, 5, ...?

user202362
1:38 AM
@BradLarson Well, how wise ... to know "people are less likely to launch a personal attack at me when they didn't know that I attacked them"

2:11 AM
@Telkitty If someone considers a politely worded message by a moderator an "attack" and wants to retaliate for it, that might explain why we messaged them in the first place.

user202362
@BradLarson it's not the words in the message, it's your action of not wanting to analyze the validation of the flags and ban someone for a year

user202362
like I said, if it's the opinion of a a group of people after carefully analyzing the situation, then sure, a single mod can suspend someone and sign with the signature of the 'team'

user202362
but if it's 1 person's misguided judgement, then sign with team would be avoidance of ones accountability at best

2:42 AM
@Telkitty assuming mods work alone. generally a suspension gets talked about
and some of the people we have to deal with can be seriously abusive or obsessive
Don't forget, we're volunteers and we do occationally have mods being stalked, or such

user202362
I am not going to further analyze, because we will both end up angry, so just let it be ...

@Walt I like "Dear Frail Mortal"

user202362
but stalking someone after been suspended by the same person seems a bit obsessive ...

@Telkitty its happened
(I've had people I suspended turn on on my blog, which is the only reason I pay for domain privacy)
cause I don't want them turning up on my doorstep. Well in theory I can use my dad's rental property but...

user202362
to be fair, if the person does this to you, (s)he would likely to be doing it to other people as well, so don't feel too special :p

2:49 AM
Well, that's a mild case
there's been worse, but eh, not my place to talk about it

user202362
I have never heard about a moderator been murdered by someone who (s)he has suspended over the internet ... like ever. So you are safe. :p

user202362
track record

user202362
3:08 AM
that's like you are in 3rd year of university and you truthfully claiming that 'I have never failed any test yet', people will likely to assume that you wouldn't fail anything in the future either

user202362
actuary is calculated from past statistics

user202362
insurance company depend heavily on past data to set your current premium

but you could
and people who get suspensions, especially extended ones do have a track record of not being a good citizen

user202362

I would like some data/statistics on the correlation between murderer/rapist & nerds/geeks who have CS/software engineering related degrees and work in the same/similar field.

you don't necessarily need to be either

“Let’s imagine: It’s time to elect a world leader, and your vote counts. Which would you choose:

user202362
“Candidate A: Was kicked out of office twice; sleeps until noon; used opium in college; drinks a quart of brandy every evening.

“Candidate B: Is a decorated war hero, a vegetarian, doesn’t smoke, drinks an occasional beer, and has had no illicit love affairs.

I don't have enough rep to vote
But if I have to vote, then A

user202362
but ... I bet you have already known the answer before I asked the question ~_~

In what ways is Interpersonal Skills better than Yahoo Answers?

user315433
I get about the same amount of cringe from both.

@Walt do you do that to all your sites?
I mean rank them by cringonometry?

Cringonometry?

user202362
grow corns on unihorse - would recommend!

@Oded so the DAG is team of developers without a direct team leader? Didn't work much in big companies (only one, actually) but from what I know any team of developers should have a direct manager, aka Team Leader. The Product Manager should be the "bigger" boss. But guess this isn't set in stone. :)
@M.A.R. using them to bypass the 30 days limit on display name

@ShadowWizard it works well when the management philosophy is "hire smart people and get out of their way"

8:31 AM
@Walt it's better than Yahoo, but I still wonder about the problems with POB.

8:54 AM
@ShadowWizard a friend of mine (20 years of IT jobs on his CV) interviewed for the position of Senior Team Lead Angular. Turned out he would be the sole developer...

@rene You know "Kitchen Nightmares"? Sometime I wish there was a similar show for failing software houses

@rene LOL... so sad. He took the job?

user202362
Being the sole developer has advantages if you are on a brand new project.

@Derpy oh, awesome. I'll pitch that to John de Mol ...
@ShadowWizard Nope
@Telkitty yes, but if you're more into the Lead aspect of a team and not so into the nitty gritty details, being the sole developer can become a nightmare

user202362
if you are not into nitty gritty details, you are probably not in control of things

user202362
9:06 AM
unfortunately, there is no software that would be 'roughly working'

@Telkitty you don't need to be in control of those things. You need to keep the rest of the world out.

user202362
it would help if your team is great to start with

user202362
@rene if you underlying eventually gains more knowledge about the system and (s)he gets paid less than you, then there is a good chance that you will be replaced sometimes down the track when economic condition turns bad

@rene do you want to replace me for a while? One man team, smokey-to-not-existing product requirement, no analysis.... classical "you start coding, we will clarify the requirements later" stuff"

9:23 AM
@Telkitty sure and that is a good thing, assuming they did pick up a few things how should manage teams.
@Derpy I'll build them the ultimate hello world app in every tool stack I do not yet master ...
@ShadowWizard cleaned up comments on that Gravatar/company page question

@rene would be a plan, if they didn't actually expect to get something good out of the development "process"

@rene thanks!

user202362
I don't know, maybe I am weird. But I have spent too much time in teams and ended up wasting life on unimportant thing, on stuff I can't say with pride 'I build this'.

Yes, that is familiar. Those projects should have been stopped midway, if not sooner.

user202362
9:39 AM
live systems, the 'joy' of maintenance development

user202362
I was just one of those 285th person who have worked on the system

user202362
Dunno, I get ego boost for solely or being the main person to design and making systems that are actually useful to others.

@Telkitty the number of companies affecting the life of many (thousands) people is very small... to have real effect you'll have to be a manager there... so chances to win lottery are higher. Just be happy with what you got. :D
If you want to be useful for millions of people every day, you can become designer of, well, "adult" sites.... pretty sure there is always demand for those. :P

user202362
define 'useful' :p

@Telkitty well... I think (cough cough) design of most of those sites is horrible.... any decent designer/programmer can improve it, making those who view it happier. :P

user202362
9:52 AM
@ShadowWizard the right term is 'leader', not manager, leader! :p

@Telkitty leader is one type of manager...

user202362
No, at least postgrad degree in Business has taught me otherwise

user202362
anyways my overuse of 'herd' was probably a result of this course called 'leadership'

A manager has a tendency to manage their subordinates which is in general counterproductive, specially with highly-skilled people. The teammembers then get into the habit of saying Ok, boss, this task is done, what do you want me to do next and how

user202362
and a leader dopes you into believing his/her vision and follow his/her lead :p

9:57 AM
that is about it, yes.

user202362
reminds me ... skilled border collies are good managers of sheep herds :p

And poor @ShadowWizard was thinking I wouldn't notice
^ just for you @ShadowWizard.

Depends on the organisation and the manager - if the see their role as "help my reportees to do their jobs", that's closer to a leadership role, vs "I tell my reportees what to do"

@Oded and then there is the third type: get the salary of a leader / coordinator / manager role and cover up the fact you are doing nothing with the "my team isn't proactive enough" excuse.

You get freeloaders in all levels - not just management.

10:09 AM
be payed to be the one leading the attack, sit in the sidelines and then blame your men because they didn't plan the suicide attack themselves...
Probably, even Sun Tzu must have worked with someone like that....
> 故善战者,求之于势,不责于人
A skilled commander seeks victory from the situation and does not demand it of his subordinates.

11:04 AM
@rene yay. I can use all the coffee at the moment

Oh, it is that bad?

Myeah, loooong days for the next few months.

Can't you book a looooong holiday, far, far away without WiFi?

If I don't want a job, nor an income, sure

it is all about priorities ...

11:10 AM
Coffee is my priority then. :p

@rene like this?
Priority Software Ltd. is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software solution provider. Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Israel, the company (formerly Eshbel Technologies) was acquired by private equity fund, Fortissimo Capital in 2014 and the name was changed to Priority Software. Later in 2014, Andres Richter joined the company as CEO. Priority ERP software is marketed, distributed and supported by a network of 50 business partners around the globe. == History == Priority Software was founded in Israel in 1986. == References == == External links == Official website...

This week, my fellow Stack Overflow data scientist David Robinson and I are happy to announce the publication of our book Text Mining with R with O’Reilly. We are so excited to see this project out in the world, and so relieved to finally be finished with it! Text data is being generated all the time around us, in healthcare, finance, tech, and beyond; text mining allows us to transform that unstructured text data into real insight that can increase understanding and inform decision-making. In our book, we demonstrate how using tidy data principles can make text mining easier and more ef …

@Telkitty they see it as an attack ...

1:41 PM
bleh... just read the update here. Looks like SE got into infinite loop of "planning what we should plan to do next month".
So, fully expecting same results for July.
And for August.
etc.
Instead of planning, they should, well, you know.... eh, do things.

New team, need to figure out priorities.
And how to organise the team, work etc...

Mr. Friend arrived in April.... so it's three months just to assemble the team.
Well, I do hope that you'll finally do a break in the infinite planning loop. :)

@ShadowWizard This is about the reaction we expected (and... I'm not gonna lie... expressed internally). We are very much desiring to break this loop.

@Shog9 well, to be honest, if anyone can do it, it's @Oded and the people like him. So... may the Power be With You! :-)

user202362
Use less loop, buy bigger ram & use more recursion -Telkitty™

1:55 PM
The team has been working and shipping, @ShadowWizard - not everything we work on are community requests.

user202362
yes, build enterprise version is key to ~cough~ ~cough~

One of the things we are trying to do is break out of the perception that "Stack Overflow is only Q&A". A bunch of the things we shipped are about that.
@Telkitty that's why we have an Enterprise team.
That's their focus.

user202362
I would have thought enterprise and career are the main concerns now

They are concerns, in that we want to stay around indefinitely (so we can serve developers better) - and for that we need to make money.
But - we are not falling into the trap that they are the only concerns.

user202362
No need to explain to me, I am not arguing otherwise

2:00 PM
SO new nav cough

@Disney which one?

lol
I think new new nav

The sticky header?

The question tab, not the top header
I guess SE needs more... fancy names to distinguish these new features. No one will get confused when they hear "StackExchange™ MultiCollider SuperDropdown™" compared to "New Nav"

Q: New navigation, alpha 2 released

Sklivvz Update: A Release Candidate has been announced Last month, we introduced a number of changes to the navigation for selected users: A new alpha-testing platform Unified question list with three tabs and a number of knobs to customize your question list selection New top nav We received ...

new new new nav
Actually to be honest, that's one feature I don't want to see shipped.

2:08 PM
We do need to figure out what to do with it. It is something that's on our queue, for sure.

I'm good with the current navigation.
@Oded what about the Careers/Jobs team? You have some synchronization with them?

Some. We have two different teams there (Talent - who deal with the employer side and Jobs who deal with the developer side of things). We do all sync every now and then.

@ShadowWizard tho, the current navigation can't stay the same forever...
cheese needs to be moved sometimes

@Oded hmm... so where do Company Pages belong? Talent or Jobs team?

Talent.
Employers create them, not developers.

2:17 PM
heh, but they import avatar of "who will you work with?" from developer story. :)
So they need some... synchronization?
@JourneymanGeek agreed, but from what I've seen and tried in the "new nav", that wasn't going to a good place. It was over complicated and too great of a change for existing users.

@ShadowWizard well, yeah, there's that

(and full with bugs, but that's a different matter.)

but as someone who isn't a developer, and dosen't actually use SE's core product (and there's a lot of us!), I wasn't quite as affected. That said, I didn't quite think SO was the right place for testing like that either ;p
(yes, techie people who don't code exist ;p)
We can't expect the site to be static tho. There's quite a lot of SE that's long in the tooth

@ShadowWizard The core problem new-nav sets out to solve is that filtering questions is a bit of a hidden feature for many users right now. You can set up powerful search queries that'll give you what you need, but nothing in the UI points you in that direction.
So yeah... Current system is "good enough" if you know the system in & out, or take the time to compose and then bookmark a search that matches your interests... But both are significant investments that not only many aren't willing to make, but even more aren't even aware that they should.

@ShadowWizard I've been using it for years - apparently based on that meta post - I like it.

3:10 PM
@ShadowWizard not sure how it works exactly, but an employer has to invite the person - who can then agree to be on the page. Which avatar is used - I am not sure. I think it use to just use a generated identicon and not whatever the user has selected.

user315433
Most of these sites have been closed (about edX)... if 1/2 is "most", then one can also say that "most of these sites remain open".

Guess who won?

The audience

@Walt I was surprised there's a user with 31.9k on CS50...

3:19 PM
Tip: David vs. Goliath

Isn't Isner something like 2.1m?

user315433
Both Philosophy and Law graduated a year ago today. Since then, Law got six 10K+ views questions while Philosophy got just one. But that one easily beats its Law counterparts in views: How can experts disagree despite having access to the same facts?. Not what I expected...

@Oded based on the comments here, turns out that as long as the user who was invited didn't enable their Developer Story, the page will just show the generic identicon, probably based on the email. Only when the Story is enabled it will take the actual avatar.
Still feels bit like a bug.
From random browsing, something like 80% of the users who appear in "Who will you work with?" did not enable their Developer Story.
@Bart 2.08

Dang.

Maybe with shoes he's 2.1

user315433
3:24 PM
One of top Law questions of last year is If someone catches a Pokemon that is on my property, is that theft?. Anyone remember Pokemon GO? It's been a year...

hey, and he's 21st in the world ranking. huh

It's funny, people always ask me how it is to be tall, but when I still played Volleyball I had a guy in my team who was 2.13m. So I never felt all that tall :D

@Walt now it's Pokemon WENT.
@Bart whoa... lol. How tall are you?

2m

omg
respect

3:26 PM
haha, I wouldn't call it an achievement

In ancient times people really admired tall people... just read something this week about Chinese "giant" who was 1.9m tall. lol

meters were bigger in those days

@Shog9 good point. Well, maybe with the bugs fixed and clear plan ahead "new nav" will be good thing. Let's see in 6-8 years. :)
Looks like the "new nav" there is now was just developed by one single developer, without any grand plan. No?

Well, the current problem is that new-nav was supposed to be a foundation upon which we could build, a way to customize the UI for each user's skill / needs and allow them to customize it further based on their own preferences.
But... It wasn't quite finished - there are still bugs that need to be fixed, tests and adjustments. Building a solid foundation is not a time to give up early.
So we need someone to, y'know, get back to work on it. And designers to design, and testers to test.

@Shog9 new team then?
NNAG?

3:31 PM
And then we can start doing fun stuff, like using all this fancy intelligence work to suggest tag filters or recommend related interests or note that hey, you're looking pretty frustrated with all the crap you're seeing maybe check the "less crap please" checkbox click here & be happy!"
...which is all... a non-trivial amount of work.
Like, more than a month
so we need... more than a month of folks dedicated to work on it.
Which is a lot to ask for right now.

@Shog9 hehe, sounds like science fiction, especially that checkbox.
Like a checkbox "make my life better". :D

I mean, we probably couldn't call it that
"vetted questions" or some shit

@Shog all good, and I understand.... but why don't you post this as answer on the latest announcement of the "new nav" so people will know?

it's not really an answer
or anything

But as it stands, people think it's a live project.

3:34 PM
well, it is still live
I mean, I've been using it daily for a long time

It's in hibernation.

it's just not moving
"Shog gets maudlin about what might have been a' yet still be" ain't an answer though

@Shog9 "This project is on hold, please keep reporting bugs but do not expect fixes any time soon" is.

ok, that's fair

user315433
I wonder if that sweet Stack Overflow name indeed led to widespread use of the new SO app...

@Sagarvd01, why do downvote people's stack overflow questions, even when you don't have answers to them?
I wonder how the 2 image only question get 2 upvotes

user315433
I interpret the downvote button as "I'd like to see less of this kind of posts" (similar for upvote). Sadly there isn't a bunch of matrix multiplication behind the scenes that would make this a reality.

Because "affinity" ought to mean loving stack overflow enough to go there on purpose, not just when Google sends you there.

Needs sanity check for SEDE favorite tooltip text. What should the tooltip be when an anonymous user hovers over the star? On SE proper there is no tooltip at all for anonymous users while on SEDE currently everyone gets the same tooltip. Context: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/298075 /cc @ShadowWizard
And I might need to peek in the SE javascript implementation to see how changing the tooltip text is handled there
Is having strings like Click to mark as favorite query in the JavaScript file acceptable or is that a no-go?

How dare SE burden us logged-in users with all of that heavy tooltip content, and anonymous just magically avoid it?
Unacceptable.

It is part of the brown design philosophy.

Oh. Carry on, then.

In a factory in China.

People who invest in this stuff are insane.
Can’t wait to have the global financial system built on it.

@Bart That could be true. I didn't check the if the actual translation resembles something that won't offend a Russian speaker ...

4:57 PM
@rene the source JS (or TypeScript) files have additional code around every string that needs localization. We have a build step that rewrites the JS files and replaces those locations with the actual translation.
Whatever you see on dev.sstatic.net is after the replacement

I see. Thanks.

One of early new-nav prototypes had a filter by reputation. So straightforward. I'd be happy even with a search parameter, I use search instead of navigation anyway.

@jadarnel27 well, point is to show it before clicking. :)

user315433
I know SEDE can do this, but the interface in which the query output is presented there does not encourage reading. :(

Site search has title + tags + a few lines of the question, all visible at once. Putting such an interface on top of SEDE doesn't seem likely.

That answer is so 2009.

@Walt what has changed since then? Low rep users can still post good contents.

user315433
> Votes, flags and closing is a much better indication of a question's worth than the reputation of the one who asked it.

user315433
I don't really want to vote, flag or close. I don't want to see that stuff.

By the time I have read the post and found it to be crap, I have already lost.

@ShadowWizard that is not the behavior on SE proper. You get that dialog if you click it, on SEDE you get nothing ... so that might be a compromise.

@rene yup

user315433
@ShadowWizard Yes, and Yahoo Answers users can still post good questions. Do you read them?

@Walt hehe, of course. ;)

user315433
@ShadowWizard You posted 1845 answers in 2010-13, and 133 answers in 2014-17. What changed?

@Walt life, mostly. Children... harder to browse from home, so I was restricted to browsing from work, in the dead time between coding.
And it's easier on Meta, don't need to do lots of research to answer or test code.
So I became Meta junky. :)
@Walt take this user for example:
744 rep in 8 days
You can't say all his posts are crap.
So suppose there was reputation filter, and only few users would have even seen his first posts. He would never had a chance to gain rep.
and most likely this would have deterred him from keeping to post.
SO lost major contributor.

user315433
@ShadowWizard The filtering I mentioned was for questions, not for answers.

user315433
All posts by this user are answers.

user315433
Also, "only few users would have even seen his first posts" is incorrect even if those were questions. Most users don't use any kind of filtering or advanced search parameters, because they don't know any.
