Worst part of getting attacked by hackers is that you have no idea who they are - I mean why would people spend so much effort on things that they can not tell others of? Accomplishment that you can not show off is almost like no accomplishment at all!

bjb568As a large site, it is inevitable that great masses of crap will be attracted. The only way to address this quality problem associated with scaling is by sacrificing quantity. Why? You need all of those for a good question.

@bjb568 no, and even if that were the case, I would still be opposed to your proposal

A single free-form textarea is daunting to new users (most users) and encourages bad questions that miss required components.

1:36 AM
"daunting"??

For an experienced user, we already use the form of background, code, error, analysis, problem statement, whatever. Splitting it up doesn't change the work flow for people who use the system correctly.

Some pointers are good, but no need to separate into many textareas.
I believe there's already a for that though

can I have a link so I can downvote it? :P

@Doorknob Do you remember being a new user? They're expected to read a bunch about how to write a good question and what to include, because the textarea is so meaningless and unhelpful.
@AndrewT. More text will do nothing. We've tried it. It doesn't work.
People don't read.
Splitting it up will force them to think about each part.

Well, people don't read anyway, so they will copy-paste into each part.

As someone who is frequently forced to split things into multiple text areas, I can tell it doesn't improve the quality of what I write.

You're not the target user.
You're not an idiot.

@bjb568 look, my first question was a big hunk of code and a short paragraph, and it got me +1 and a well-written answer. Who knows where I would be today if I was confronted with some excessively, unnecessarily intricate and elaborate mechanism and decided "eh, not worth the effort?"

@Sally And hey, maybe you aren't an idiot because you were forced to think because you were forced to split things. Boom! Causation!

If you're here often, you may be aware that I have a history of emotional instability resulting in multiple instances of disruptive behavior that ultimately led to a suspension. I took this opportunity to better understand the nature of this issue and it turns out I've been making this much more difficult than this needed to be.

For historical reasons, I had defined my behavioral goals in terms of being a gentleman. Among other things, this meant staying calm and never losing control of myself no matter the circumstances. This ambitious

Q: Let's disallow nominations from people who've been suspended in the past year

Shog9Well, it's election season again. I'm proud to be part of a system that governs itself in this manner; for all of its inherent messine...

user315433
Is it [status-completed]? How would we know?

By the time the next election comes, I might need to get clearance from the incumbent moderators and Community Team.
This will not be easy.

user315433
I guess I can test it by nominating somewhere... but the choice of sites is limited for me: SO, WebApps, ru.SO, Stack Apps, Android.

user315433
Not suspensions in chat, @IͶΔ. If you end up getting suspended on main for behavior in chat, that'd be another matter. — Shog9 ♦ Feb 4 at 7:35

3:22 AM
The suspension did extend to the main site.
The suspension was applied directly to the main account.
I was thinking about blocking nominations for 10x the length of the longest suspension which ended within the last year, with a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 365 days.
However, I am not willing to post this as an answer on the grounds that there is now a conflict of interest since I just exited a suspension.
I think each case should be decided on its merits, with incumbent moderators serving as the jury.

@Shog9 I see that you are looking forward to get that big, wide troll trump elected as the U.S. president ... if he was a SO/SE user, he would definitely be suspended for flaming within the first 6 months time.

But there are no rules in the presidential election against trolls

@Sally Snarkier: Wiktionary and Google Ngrams agree.

4:06 AM

takes perceptive nerves to feel the pressure on the bristles of that wacom pen
@AndrewT. "supports" is overstating it. "Doesn't completely disallow" comes closer to the truth.

And not to get too personal, but in your case specifically I would strongly encourage not selling yourself short when it comes to setting long-term goals here. — Shog9 ♦ 1 min ago
@Shog9, can you elaborate on this?

You can do a year without getting suspended. I have faith in you.
90 days may seem like a long time now, but it'll fly right by. And once that's under your belt, a year is just 3 more periods of similar length - all you have to do is whatever you did for the first one.

The problem is waiting it out, not because I have reason to believe that I can't avoid a suspension for long enough.

Patience is a virtue
And moderators should be as virtuous as they can be.

In fact, I have absolutely no reason to believe that I won't make it.

4:11 AM
Not vitreous though. A vitreous moderator is a dangerous thing.

user202362
Patience is a virtue, but it's also lethal given enough time

I know this level of confidence may not appear to be justified, but see chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/28005090#28005090 for an explanation of what happened.

See, that'll look great in your nomination a year from now.

I guess I'll have to wait.
Best to play it safe.
It's not a matter of whether I successfully address the issues that led to the suspension, or how quickly these issues get addressed. It's a matter of whether the community trusts me to be a moderator.

user202362
Whoever trully believes that patience is a virtue is also someone who wouldn't accomplish much in life

4:15 AM
Even if elected shortly after a suspension with the issues fully addressed, this would undermine community confidence when the suspension is uncovered after the election. This could create hostility and put pressure on the elected user to resign.

user202362
life is short, spend a lot of time waiting wouldn't get you far in such a ephemeral life time

My approach has always been forward-looking. I don't intend to argue with experience. As a Community Manager, you have experience that I don't have and I would much prefer to play it safe.
Getting elected only to get pressured to resign shortly afterwards is just not a good idea.
