Signal Processing election: 3 candidates... and I'm not going to vote for the lowercase candidate out of principle.

> i poke my head around meta a few times, but usually only if i wanna complain about something. i am not fond of the extra layer of SE chat, but i'll go there if i have to.

user315433
There's also some heresy in the nomination...

user315433

> i'm not going to worry too much about δ(t) being a "distribution". it's fine with me to call it a "function" and naked Dirac deltas outside of an integral are fine by me.

:o

@404 you won't need to atm, unless another candidate steps up

user315433
Ah, they'll find someone eventually. Past elections show that some pro forma candidate can usually be found.

Apparently, there are two options now: (1) show U.S. traffic prominently separated from the rest; (2) show only U.S. traffic.

it'd be... interesting if "a certain" MSE post is brought to candidate's comment section.
> one day long time ago i almost got Peter in trouble with a cop in a Burlington Vermont suburb
PII leaking? Probably not.

apparently that lowercase candidate was suspended on christanity.se

Guys, is there any SE site where I can put software identification request?
There was a software which I used almost 2 years ago, but forgot what its name was :/

if undo is around, you could ask him if it's on-topic

Great, thanks!

please do check if it's on-topic before posting though :)

Software identification... that's kind of new. At least chat room could work.

I don't know why I have a difficulty in reading SE post due to font on Chrome on Win7, compared to Chrome on Win10.

user315433
Any SE post, or some particular site?

The most offending is SO due to its Arial font
Or probably, to be more specific, sites with sans-serif font
I've used ClearType on both.

user315433
That is... nearly all of them. The serif sites I know are Math, EE, and Christianity. What else?

2:21 AM
@AndrewT. Hmm... not much is different between Win7 and Win10 that I know of. Both have DirectWrite...

Disabling DirectWrite fixed it, thanks.

@AndrewT. Disabling DirectWrite? really? huh. Usually people like DirectWrite.

I probably enabled it when it was on WinXP due to unreadable CJK font. Maybe fixed on Win7... dunno
(I got it reversed, disabling #disable-direct-write fixed it)

Oh, yeah. chrome://flags is a mess.
That's by-design though, sadly.
(really, flags are only supposed to be used for short-term experiments that users don't touch)

user315433
Is there a flag for "overwrite when downloading, with no prompt"?

user315433
2:29 AM
Because I'd use that one.

user315433
There is an extension that does it, fortunately.

@404 probably not. The ideology of Chrome is "provide very few options, because if users need to adjust options, we've failed". Sadly, that slights power users on settings they want.

+1, downloading config file from a wizard is troublesome with Chrome adding suffix :)

Math.SE makes my life easier in some ways. When a homework problem is something easily searchable, most of submitted solutions are correct. The notation is what Math.SE posts use, of course.

They lack attribution, unfortunately.

Interestingly, Shog9 is one of those people it makes sense to stalk. You can learn a lot about community building and how to design rules to promote desired behavior from the analytical posts Shog9 makes. — nwp yesterday

@Quill Experience. No substitute for it. There are a lot of things you teach, but the subtleties you learn in running a community in the real world (or in any other skilled trade) are not easily taught.
You can't teach these subtleties without either 1) explaining them on their own, stripping them of their context (which obviously won't work), or 2) explaining every single scenario you've gone through and the decisions you've made, which is damn near impossible to do.

user202362

I'm not going to say it's theoretically impossible to teach years of experience to students, but to do so would require an infeasible amount of time and resources. You'd have to explain every situation you've gone through, and since your students aren't actually going through the tasks firsthand, it's not going to be retained easily.

This sort of experience is not something you could feasibly teach. You could cover the key aspects of you work, but as I said, to cover all the subtleties you learn in your line of work is utterly infeasible in practice.

Pinball tables.
Pinball tables are intended to allow for some amount of nudging to control the ball, but have a 'tilt bob' (or accelerometer on more recent tables) that ends the ball if the table is moved too much.

Toilet paper.
Noun: toilet paper ‎(plural toilet papers)
  1. Paper, usually on a roll, to clean oneself after defecation, or to pat oneself dry after urination. (abbreviated TP)
Verb: toilet paper ‎(third-person singular simple present toilet papers, present participle toilet papering, simple past and past participle toilet papered)
  1. (US) To cover someone's house (and trees and shrubs) with toilet paper or other similar paper product, often as a celebratory event, without the "victim's" knowledge. Sometimes also performed as an act of hazing.
  2. "The football team toilet papered the Smith's house again...this time with paper towels in their trees."

user315433
Familiar with the noun. But as a verb, meaning to cover the house in it? Weird.

> often as a celebratory event
I hope that doesn't imply you cover your own house

That's correct, generally not.
