How did those messages end up round the wrong way?!!
Waaaaah.

What happened with the low quality review queue on SO? All of a sudden, there's a bunch of year old answers all saying "hey, look at this question"
and now it's empty?

@ColeJohnson NAA flags? Revised quality algorithm? Automated NAA finder?
...that all got rolled back?

@michaelb95 probably
what do you mean rolled back
I'm pretty sure there was like 200+ in the queue, so I did my daily 20 and it was then empty

@ColeJohnson that would be roboreviews :P
2

@michaelb958 NAA's & VLQ flags are now shown in the queue.

@hichris123 Since when?

1:39 AM
@hichris123 That was why I mentioned them.
@ColeJohnson Since the sad, sad demise of the 10K flag queue.

@ColeJohnson since "Lets remove the 10k flag queue"

How long ago was that? I haven't been here for a few weeks

A: Let's get rid of the 10K flag queue

Shog9This is done: /tools/flagged is no more. Disputed flags are still a thing, but disputes are situations observed by the system, not explicit actions. Oh wow. I've been gone that long!?
Oh well. Let's go longer ;)

Lol

2:09 AM
@ColeJohnson That sounds really weird out of context.
*begins brainstorming possible Arqade questions with that title*

anyone knows how to reproduce this? stackoverflow.com/q/12011120/792066

I do not understand.... 6 recommended delete, and it is not gone? stackoverflow.com/review/low-quality-posts/4722214

@LaszloPapp has an upvote... that will end in the mod queue
> If the post scores > 0 then raise DisputedLowQuality mod flag

it has zero score, eventually.
The question asks for a simple example. I know you can do better than this. — David Heffernan Sep 6 '11 at 20:10
@David Heffernan, why trying to do better than the official documentation? — Darin Dimitrov Sep 6 '11 at 20:11

what to do with this user and his answers? He does not quite get how SO works.

Mat
Just downvote & flag (NAA) (or delvote). It will fix itself pretty fast.

already did those, in fact I even linked the how to ask to him
but it was a wrong decision IMHO
looking at his link, it feels more like spam

Mat
7:20 AM
Probably an illegal download indeed. Not sure about spam but could be. Could be an attempted virus propagation too I guess.

and I am not sure if this book is free, etc, if it is, it should have a canonical source.
spam fits illegal download to me :)
cannot reflag it for moderator attention.
and if it goes deleted as NAA, mods will not notice

8:34 AM
has anyone experienced that the flag button does not work in the popup dialog when you click on flagging a post? First time for me, but it is strange. There was some error dialog in the background which was only partially visible, so it may be related.
out of the curiosity, what is wrong about this answer? stackoverflow.com/a/20779364/2682142 I could not figure it out, but now Stack Overflow will lose a valuable answer IMHO with my deletion. Just wanted to clarify before deleting. I do not wish to leave place for fraud voting.

First glance, it's this Laszlo Papp fellow who wrote it ...

it got 5 unexplained downvotes.

There you go, +1. The correct answer.

I will delete it either way, but thanks. ;)

Why? It's correct, so why delete it?

8:44 AM
I realize these posts having 0 - -2 votes are an attack surface for revenge.

@Bart ..... muble.... because he can?

and it just annoys me when getting unexplained downvotes for such posts ...
SO loses a valuable answer, and I gain peace.

By that logic I should also flag you @SPArchaeologist

I would bring it up on meta to be honest.

What exactly?

8:46 AM
5 downvotes without explanation with crappy self-answer upvoted, but I would probably get that they do not know Qt enough to comment on.
so it is needless.
@Bart, I got 5 unexplained downvotes for an IMHO correct answer. Do you think it is normal? I feel it a needless attack surface for revenge, so let it go :)

@Bart you can, you also probably will get a refused flag but you can. What I meant is that as everyone "can cast an unexplained vote because he should be free to" so the same freedom is for him to delete.

No. Then again, it's pretty obvious when I get strange up or downvotes. It's always on the highest scoring or lowest scoring answer @LaszloPapp. Annoying, but it happens.
At no point did I argue against that @SPArchaeologist.

@Bart: this answer will get to -10-20 over time or less.
even though it is correct.
I will leave downvote reasons for my downvotes and some people will take the revenge to this.
notice how the thread has not been edited for a long while, it did not get bumped.
also, I usually got the downvotes for it when I got downvotes in batch.

@Bart And I wasn't arguing either ^_^. Just simpatizing for Laszlo.

Oh yeah, I have posts like that. Usually my downvoters are stupid enough to have their votes reversed.

8:50 AM
@Bart: I am sure if I deleted that answer, and someone wrote almost the same, that answer would get upvoted over time
since it does not start from -1 and it is not an attack surface etc, and it is correct.

I'm also sure that then another of your answers would be picked as a target for those stupid enough to do so @LaszloPapp

the irony is that the first downvote came from the OP with whom I spent 1-2 hours... hand-holding about basics.
@Bart, yes of course.

Myeah, I've quit the who hand-holding thing
Far too often a waste of my time

I get 2-6 constant unexplained downvotes daily.
I managed to grow an anti-group coming back to me regularly :)
the whole downvote system is broken.... it does not help the OPs ("mandatory" reasonning), and it does not help the criticizers either (anonymous comments) ... but do not get me started ;)

Maybe propose that comments should be mandatory, but anonymous? :p

8:55 AM
we kind of did.
we discussed it thoroughly with @SPArchaeologist and others, but Shog9 was quite negative without even listening IMHO.

@Bart done that, saw that.
@LaszloPapp Don't be so negative. The problem is that the discussion comes around every sencond day, and most time because of whinning. It is just human that the staff is pretty "bored" by that.

well, there was even a separate room for it this time.
it was not the "usual whining and begging".
I will look up how he joined that room, sec...
oh, the room is not alive anymore, but it was something like this:
"You do not make any sense you crazy beggers, that is all I have to say"

@LaszloPapp - I have fought enough against windmills in my "UO unofficial server seer" years. Not going to start again now.
The fight between chaos and order had more sense to it.

yeah, well, I would not act with that tone and inconsideration as a community manager when the community has a concern and would like to discuss it with clean table, a dedicated room for it, etc, but that may just be me. Let us leave it with that...
amazing ... stackoverflow.com/questions/23467643/… I solved the OP's issue, and he updated the question to a new issue.... triggering my answer totally useless...
and he withdrew the selected answer, too, sigh.

@LaszloPapp Revert the edit in such cases

9:09 AM
feel free to edit, I am moving away from doing anything with that OP.
he fixed the buggy code, removed the error, and put up a new one... :-)

Yay, question rolled back. Answer accepted. Laszlo still grumpy ... we all win!!

I realized that some people come to SO to solve homework, and when the issue is solved, they delete their question.

You only realize that now?

yes
I guess they do not wanna see their prof, job interviewers, etc to see they got help on the internet, or so.
e.g. I saw the TomTom interview questions solved in comments, and then deleted. :)

9:18 AM
@LaszloPapp Ninja question galore.

:-) I saw several other companies' interview questions on Stack Overflow, too, in the past.

Oh yeah, I've even seen questions where I was pretty certain the OP was actually in the interview

heh, another OP updating the question with new (and quite vague) questions: stackoverflow.com/questions/23467707/…
I would personally roll it back, but I will leave it with others to decide...

there was a meta discussion about ninja questions somewhere. Cannot find it now.

Of course you can't ... ninja .... d'uh

Hurray for constructive comments :/

@LaszloPapp I must be sincere. I cannot grasp what he want to do, or at least I'm not sure.

@SPArchaeologist: he wants to programatically validate the code as he writes.

Do he need to check if some string code could actually compile?

i.e. not running external program, like the compiler.
so basically, he would prefer a library interface in his code as opposed to system calls, which sounds legit purpose to me.
although he is probably looking for off-site resource, not logic.

9:38 AM
there should be something in the code generation / emit related namespaces.
I will give it a look later

This OP also changed the question a bit since the submission, yay: stackoverflow.com/questions/23462719/…
almost all my answers got useless this morning, yay. :)

Pff, all my answers are useless the moment I post them. So you have nothing to complain about.

if I had to look at myself as an outstander, I would think this guy makes no sense. :D
@Bart: you could modify the questions with puppets to suit your answers.

How do you think I got my rep?

10:10 AM
lol

@Bart: by hacking the SE system with a vulnerability called deathrow after heartbleed or so
Of course my if() has a condition. :) I just didn't include it because I didn't think it was important for the question. There is also a const char * allocated in the code that I send to the QString constructor. I just put QString otherPath(const char *); again for simplicity. Thirdly, I didn't think I could just send a QString object to a const char *. First it needs to be converted to a const char * (which is what I thought toLatin1().data() did) — MrUser 11 mins ago
yeah, right, "of course" he posts syntactically broken code.

10:26 AM
would love, but no more cv for today ^^

@LaszloPapp Here's another one you won't be able to vote on. ;)

I could flag it as other or vlq. :P

10:52 AM
can chat messages target offline users?
@SuhosinPony - I don't know if this will reach you. Anyway.... check Chris lines in the special thanks of borderlands 2....

oh, disputed flag handling is still there?

@LaszloPapp I think a disputed flag happens if you flag an answer and someone clicks "Looks Good" in the review queue.
Unsure if the same can happen with question flags.

ok, thanks.

11:13 AM
@AlulaErrorpone I don't know if this will reach you. Anyway.... check Chris lines in the special thanks of borderlands 2....
(sorry for the double post, but I just remembered that he changed username)

11:56 AM
I'm wondering if I should always explain my downvotes.
One downvote of mine is because the question is unclear, one is because you clearly don't understand the relation between PHP and javascript, and third one is because of the appeal to urgency, for a total of -1 (but I wish I could downvote thrice) — Jan Dvorak 2 mins ago

@JanDvorak that question makes no sense at all :\

@Stijn I share that impression

12:52 PM
unexplained downvote again, and I do not know how else I would answer that question.
@SPArchaeologist: have you seen this? meta.stackoverflow.com/a/252235/2682142

1:27 PM
@LaszloPapp thanks for the link but to be Honest I fear it will become another "words to the wind" topic.
Also, I repeat that I am more worried about unexplained -1 on answers than question. Perhaps I am a little biased: as far as I can tell random voting is more frequent on answers.

@SPArchaeologist: yeah, I do not think it matters what the community says. To me, it seems like shog and community mods form the rules, not the community.
also, the meta voting is inconsistent, his proposal is highly upvoted, but at other places, the same thing is downvoted to oblivion.

meta voting is meant to express agreement/disagreement and the time of day.
2

@SPArchaeologist: see that lame reasoning for instance:
@LaszloPapp: Gilles' answer has 26 downvotes, and the other answers are mostly dissenting opinions, so. — Robert Harvey ♦ Apr 29 at 23:56
the community clearly voted against how the moderator acts today for that particular topic, but nothing has changed, and I do not expect that anything will.
I do not understand the voting on meta on such topics, if shog and moderators do not want, it is not going to happen.
Perhaps it is not meant to be a democratic process, and I was living in misbelief.

1:47 PM
@LaszloPapp There was a quote on my old UO server "My house, my rules". I can live with that. After all, the site is owned by the same mods that you said are taking the decisions. That said, no one will ever convince me that there is usefulness in telling someone he is wrong but not telling why/where.

yeah, I am not saying I do not accept the non-democratic process, whatsoever, but some people think it is democratic. :)
(I did, too)

... seems chat just became 20% cooler.

@SPArchaeologist: btw, it was nice to see that metapost because I had the same thoughts.

@LaszloPapp a bit like with Jeff then :) it's not uncommon to see a highly downvoted answer of him where he goes against the community

?
You should have to add a comment when downvoting and the site should then anonymize the commenter. — Jason Apr 26 at 11:19
@SPArchaeologist ^

1:59 PM
@LaszloPapp Dante once wrote: "Vuolsi così colà dove si puote ciò che si vuole e di più non dimandare".
which would sound like "That's the will of (the one) who has the power, don't ask further."
Anyway, the 20% cooler reference wasn't directed at you :P. I just saw @AshleyNunn avatar.

@SPArchaeologist that's precisely why people wants power or positions of power

CC @Bart @Rene

@SPArchaeologist: fair enough, and I would like to repeat that I am not against it, it just has not been clear to me. I thought meta would be a place where the community decides, my bad.

@GnomeSlice 1st minute and /me likes

yo guys, can anyone tell me: when a sub 2k users suggests an edit, then immediately reedits the same question, do the suggestions get combined? or have I just flooded a question with edits....

@OGHaza if the suggestion wasn't approved/rejected it just combines, if someone approved/rejected it gets rejected by Community, if it's already approved or rejected a new review is created
what's doing the network mascot here? O_O

@Braiam That sounds wrong..

@SPArchaeologist: good thing is that unexplained downvotes are usually balanced by several upvotes, so my upvoted answers are like 5-8/-1 :D
or -2

@Braiam weren't we going to buy a Twilight Sparkle plush for the network mascot project?

2:07 PM
@SPArchaeologist @3ventic this sounds more wrong...

@Braiam, cheers. Not used to suggesting edits anymore... took me 3 to get it right...

submitted 5 minutes ago and already deleted
not sure why he has not self-answered it instead...

yeah, you have showed sharepoint.

@SPArchaeologist O_O, 1644 out 46,759 answers with +5 votes

2:11 PM
is there an SE site with negative vote balance? :P

AU is in better standing... 10% (20,039/187,687) of every non-negative voted answer has +5

20,954/74,496 answers are +5 or more on Arqade

Arqade is not a good metric for proper voting.

That's a good point :p

@Braiam a little needed precisation: on sharepoint when one post an answer usually the answer is mostly correct. There is very few "random guessing" going around.

2:19 PM
@SPArchaeologist yeah, that's the downside, most of the questions are too vague that any guess answer will do

@Braiam Nope, sorry but imho that not the case. SharePoint is just so problematic that usually users prefer to not speak when they are unsure. As a result, there are very few answer. An those answer receive very few votes.

@SPArchaeologist: ah, it is worse than that now I am thinking of... the current downvote system does only not help the OP, but nor the criticizer, and nor the moderator who will need to deal with the mess. In fact, I do not understand whom the current the downvoting system helps.
@SPArchaeologist: we have better chance to retry the proposal after the split I would say....

The perceived problem I was discussing with Laszlo time ago was actually revolving around THAT situation. A random vote on a Skett +9999 vote answer does nothing. On a good answer on SharePoint it create NOISE. +2/-1 is already a shaddy situation.

(ah, sorry, I forgot... the current system does support people doing revenge)

I can give plently of example of code samples taken from sharepoint blogs that will create subtle problems you may catch only 6 month later from now.
Document sets are the most common example. Create it in one way and they will get corrupted and be displayed as common folder..... but only if opened in a dialog in a very specific situation (alternate mapping and such). Thank you, oh random user that didn't wasted thy two precious second to tell me before. Can I ask you WHY you lose your time on a site whose purpose is to teach others? Hoping for a MVP title?

2:28 PM
@GnomeSlice this accompanies the wether here nicely...

@rene :)

thunderstorm and all that? :P Today, it was snowing in Finland again. The winter is not yet over in May. :P

@LaszloPapp apparently neither the rest of the world... there was a discussion sometime about someone following a -5 answer

@Braiam: neither what exactly? what do you mean by following?

@LaszloPapp the current downvote system does only not help ..., ...., ...., my statement

2:38 PM
ok, downvotes does not help the rest of the world either. By following you mean, it was a correct answer, or someone was trying to follow a downvoted bad answer?

someone trying to follow a downvoted rather dangerous answer

how do you know it is dangerous?
(as a newcomer without comments?)
@SPArchaeologist: ^^

@LaszloPapp poking at the system files for an easy task...
and the actual risk of leaving the system unbootable

what if that really is the right way, but the downvoters were unrightfully worried and downvoted without leaving comments and get corrected?
I would not know without hinting comments. I would take it as the right way as no one has been able to criticize it. I would not get worried about 5 unexplained downvotes.
but it can scare newcomers off being too much concerned about downvotes missing the right solution out.

2:58 PM
@LaszloPapp well, that particular answer was way off wrong, there were already 2 others upvoted/safest and yet the guy decided to follow the downvoted one

perhaps the other two answers did not work in that use case?

no, he directly tried that one
first shot

perhaps he thought that would be the best based on first impression. What is wrong about that if there are no downvote reasons provided?
this is a typical case of downvote reasons being important.
it is possible that other answers started off as 1-2 and this one as -1, and then the crowd just followed that state.

Speaking of which, I still don't get why split votes view is a privilege.

3:27 PM
@GnomeSlice yay. I can use some listening after a bunch of telcos

A: Why do vote-counts require 1,000 reputation to see?

Jeff AtwoodWe just thought it would be fun to give folks something at 1000 rep, since there was a bit of a gap between 500 (retag) and 2000 (edit other people's posts).

@SPArchaeologist because. That's why.

@Stijn I know, I know.... but I believe that the reason "because fun" should be leaved to Pinkie.....

40
A: Why is it a privilege to view vote counts?

user27414This is because it's "expensive" to view the vote count (in terms of running the query). The rep threshold limits the number of people requesting this data.

+20 4 mins ago reversal Serial downvoting reversed
aha, interesting....

3:39 PM
@3ventic better. Still, I dubt many users would use that.... Also, since the system already counts the vote, keeping two split results shouldn't be so heavy performance-wise. Anyway, I will go with that.

AH FOUND IT

I use that because I always get annoyed when I'm browsing sites where I have <1k rep

A: Why, on a programming site, most basic programming principles always ignored?

@3ventic but this

What is a good rep to gain the marshall badge?
(yeah, I just had to brag)

I got marshal just after hitting 10k

seems Alula isn't around today. I hope he didn't decide to delete his account after that link I sent before.

in theory, it is possible to get the marshall badge at reputation 1.

@LaszloPapp uhhh no.

4:11 PM
Don't you need like 5 rep to flag?

@LaszloPapp without shedding 14 reputation somewhere just in time?

15 IIRC

Ah, gotcha.

@JanDvorak: no, not without. Only if you lose that somehow.

oh. Not worth it :-)

4:13 PM
I went to an outdoor rock concert for 12 hours Saturday. I then slept for 4 hours, and got up to play and sing with a band for about 3 hours.
I am...tired.
And sore. I'm no longer used to getting beaten up at rock concerts.

tazers are fun, @jadarnel27.

@Undo for whom?

For both parties, @JanDvorak.
wonders if there's such a thing as tazer addiction

Haha, @Undo. I did not get tazed, though I did see some very drunk guy get taken down by the police.
There is a whole lot of pushing and shoving that goes on in a "general admission seating" crowd.

bring a sword next time.

4:18 PM
Plus, you have to constantly be prepared to assist with "crowd surfers."

I guarantee no one pushes/shoves you if you have a sword.
or @Bart's stick of smiting.

HALP!
STRING ENCODING OH MY GOSH MY EYES!

I feel like the sword would bring me right back around to getting tazed, though, @Undo. Which I'd like to avoid =)

Smiting stick it is then

Why avoid when you can make tazer proof clothing? http://boingboing.net/2014/03/06/make-taser-proof-clothing-with.html Think of the reaction you'll get when you are tazed and you just look at the cops*

*warning, the above reaction make lead to bullets flying in your general direction

someone said Bart got the marshall badge by flagging himself 500 times? :P

4:26 PM
Strangely enough, all those instances were considered to be helpful ...

@Andy LOL - that is excellent.

yes, you are a real survivor; can live on the edge of the ice.

I bet the person who photoshopped this does not work with levels.
Or perhaps this is a proposed business card for carpenters that work with novelty levels obtained from joke gift shops.

@Louis Hahaha, the bubble in the top one is in the wrong place.
And the bottom one
der
that'sthejoke.jpg
NEVERMIND

@GnomeSlice Most likely the designer rotated an horizontal level. The top one would be (about) the same whether the level is horizontal or vertical. It's the bottom one that is problematic.

@Louis No, there's a space between the one on the top and the topmost edge. You're right, he rotated a horizontal level 90 degrees to the left.

@GnomeSlice Yeah, you're right. You've got a better eye than mine. The bottom one does not require that much visual acumen.

Rotated 90 degrees clockwise

According to my profile page, I’m not blocked from answering. The question isn’t deleted, locked, or closed. I can comment fine...

Ah. Thank you :-)

The wheel of blame says it's @TimStone's fault. So there you go.

;-)
Whoah, SO chat just went borky too.

5:20 PM
... we're always borky

*shrug* I guess I'll go outside.

5:38 PM
Say @Shog9. Any chance you, or those involved, could perhaps give a somewhat "official" stance on the tag sponsorship/cleanup situation for the Sony tag here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/253528/… Just so we don't screw you guys over in the deal you have with them. Even if it's just a "we'll get back to you on that".

5:52 PM
@Bart the sponsorship thing is a red herring here; let's figure out what the right tags are first and then handle that.
@Jay's working on figuring out who we can talk to at Sony to get that support page updated.

Then perhaps provide feedback on that if you have any. The way the score is going, there seems to be support for what I proposed @Shog9.

@Bart just remember, tags are not a hierarchy. I'll comment more on this later, but I have to leave for a few hours right now.
