@Purmou It is neat, you can watch the percentage of users who are just here for work increase:

Q: Is this community intolerant towards controversial questions/discussions?

PurmouSince my last question was an obvious flop, I decided to ask it again, but this time in parts and with what I believe to be evidence of specific problems. My first concern lies in my observation that certain types of discussions are frowned upon here on meta for their questioning nature. By this...

i tried to be rational and factual

1:30 AM
what is wrong with meta?

2:05 AM
@Purmou you should probably wait a few days to let everyone cool off a bit if you wanna ask that.

it'll just get downvoted and close voted again
because people just DO NOT LIKE QUESTIONS LIKE THAT
and it's freakin' disappointing
people still just push away the real problems
i don't understand
do they not care?

@Purmou yeah. People are tired of arguing and discussing.

The argument just ended. It's like walking up to the other side 20 minutes after the armistice is signed and picking a fight over whatever it is you're warring about

You should wait some time to poke the fire any more.

what if the armistice led to revolt in the nation?
shouldn't something have to be done?

2:10 AM
Er. It didn't; people seem happy with the solution as far as I know

The metaphor falls apart, sorry...it's the internet.

my argument is separate
what was apparently resolved let me see what else is going on besides simple disagreements in terms of deletions

@Purmou Please just stop arguing for a short while.

all right
but it's not like it'll be any different in a week, or a month, or a year

@Purmou That may be true. But at least people will have had some time to calm down.

2:21 AM
Speaking of the argument ending:
Shog9 on March 05, 2012

If you’ve been around Meta Stack Overflow the past few days, you’ve seen a fair bit of conversation sparked by the recent changes to how reputation is calculated:

To be clear: reputation values are not changing, every action in the system is still worth the same amount. Here’s what will be different:

Your reputation will be correct at all times

Deletions will have a much more immediate effect on reputation, not waiting on a recalc (but reputation sync takes up to 5 minutes on a delete/undelete action; as to not block the user’s response thread, it’s offloaded to a background queue) …

THANK JEEBUS
but mine still stands, but i'll wait anyways

@Purmou :) thanks

Oh they went with 10 instead of 20 for the delete vote cap o.o
I'm confused about their first point... It talks more about information going out of date, and mentions nothing of all these questions which are no longer on-topic...

2:38 AM
@animuson what did you expect him to say about the off-topic questions?

I imagine he's avoiding the issue of whether or not the questions under debate are actually off-topic. I think most people agree they are if posted today, but it's easier to just not bring that into it

@jjnguy: Reputation gained from questions which are no longer on-topic or determined to be not constructive. I strongly agree with Michael Read's reasoning.

@animuson Ah, I see. Unfortunately I do not agree with that.
@animuson In practice, the rep gained from those soft questions is hardly any at all.

Both sides make sense; rep should be a measure of your contributions to the site as of now, but you also shouldn't lose rep for something that was perfectly valid when you posted it. Saying "if the post got upvoted and it's old enough, it was probably fine then" is a somewhat sane compromise

Anonymous
It's pretty good. I couldn't think of a better solution than displaying two scores, which would probably be a UX non-starter.

2:48 AM
I've always believed that a user should be capped to how much reputation they can receive from a single post (say 200 to match the daily cap), but I doubt that would be a very popular idea.

I'm fine with letting people keep their rep if it bribes them into posting useful stuff now, but then again meta has trained me not to put much stock in a user's rep
@animuson Apparently waffles brought it up in 2009 and it got exactly 0 votes:
0

Q: FAQ/Reputation info images are low quality

Jake KingVarious images from the FAQ and privilege info pages are either low quality, outdated, or simply incorrect. For example, this image is of especially low quality: Sure, it's not a huge problem, but it's an annoyance. These would be easy to fix with newer images specific to SE Gaming, like so: ...

I just edited meta.stackoverflow.com/privileges/established-user to include the image from the above post
Does the edit look good?

@YiJiangsProble_ Well, the arrows in that image are Gaming-specific

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, but I don't think that's too big a deal
It's used for all SE sites, so it's never going to fit all the sites whichever arrow you use

8:23 AM
someone needs to fix that.

A: Should the "yearling" badge recur?

Jeff AtwoodPer the description: Active member for a year, earning at least 200 reputation. This badge can be awarded multiple times. Yes, it should recur, since we always designed it to recur from day one.

Why not just it the Anniversary Badge, or better yet.. If badges are supposed to icentinvize than how did I earn the badge when I was suspended for a year? Clearly your system is all kinds of messed up...
I'll recap though...
I joined 2.5 years ago. I was suspended for 13 months of that. I've been unsuspended and participating for probably a little over a year. Yet I've been awarded with two yearling badges.

16
A: Two yearling badges on the same day?

Grace NoteYou get the Yearling badge in proportion to the necessary reputation and the age of the account. 200 reputation in one year is sufficient for the base point, but if you miss that requirement, then you don't automatically get the badge when you hit 200 reputation. Instead, you have a higher thresh...

8:44 AM
that's not confusing as all hell.
Maybe they could just publish this algorithm in a math whitepaper.
It's a function of your exp, the starting point after account linkage, the time you've been on the site and how much EXP since you've got since the last badge.... Oh and they call it "Yearling."
Sounds more complex than the tax code.

Hi everyone. I've got a quick question, is there a way to get number of questions/answers of a specific user with API ?
@EvanCarroll why was you suspended, if I can ask ?

10:50 AM
Look at the number of responses

@YiJiangsProble_ I need to be able to fetch even Jon Skeet's profile
@YiJiangsProble_ uh, "total": 15,

@Martin Yup

@marc maybe you know it: Why didn't you include total in 2.0 ?

What are you talking about? That's the way you get the total number of questions a user has asked
You'll need to make another call to get answers count

@YiJiangsProble_ That's nice, but it's not in 2.0. I'm just curious why

10:56 AM
it is available on a filter
meh, that's questions - same for answers should work though

ah, that's good

if anything looks missing, look at the filters
the reasoning: it is usually the case that people want the first page, or (for things like infinite scroll) is there more
knowing the exact number is the edge case
and is more expensive

That's good. So, you didn't include it because it was not so useful

we can do "is there more" by just asking for one extra row - i.e. if you are getting a page page of 30, we can ask the backend for the top (/next) 31, which is much cheaper than saying "count them"
@Martin not so useful and more expensive; but it is included - just not by default

@MarcGravell exactly what I wanted to say. Thank you !

11:15 AM
@MarcGravell so actually, to get has_more field, you just try to get one line after last returned line?

Hmm. Is there a page to see all my applications I created?

@Martin There is an "apps" link on your user profile, but I don't know what it does =)
(right above your "about me" section)

It's just to show authorized applications
(but yes, my app is there)

@Martin Ah, ok. I guess I could have read that page, huh =P

No worries :)

2:00 PM
Do you guys think that this answer should be downvoted? It is an answer on a blatantly off-topic question.

I'm not against answering an offtopic question

Lix
Helping the OP out with a helpfull comment containing a link - yes... but posting an answer?
@Martin - Giving answers to these types of questions hints to other users that these questions are acceptable

@Lix Honestly, I would have downvoted (and, more importantly, flagged) that specific answer - because it's "not an answer". It's a link, plus a "me too!" comment.

Lix
@jadarnel27 - very true

@Lix But in general, I wouldn't downvote answers to off-topic questions any more than I would downvote answers to duplicate questions. Some people insist on answering questions like that =) The faster they are closed, the better.

Lix
@Jad - also true :P The thing is there is nothing "wrong" with the actual content of that answer - so I feel that a downvote (while still catching the users attention) isnt the right way to go - he WAS in fact attempting to assist the OP....
But yes - this post should be closed promptly.

@Lix Ha, I may be in somewhat of a minority on the downvotes. Link-only answers are really the only time I do that, because I feel like it encourages the user to self-delete (which I am hoping makes life easier for the mods).
Although now I'm not sure if that assumption is correct. It doesn't make a lot of sense now that I really think about it.
I AM BEING INCREDIBLY VERBOSE TODAY. GOLLY.

Lix
@jad - I agree - a downvote might encourage a self-delete. I think this is the best case scenario - it shows that they "agree" with the downvote. (to a certain extent)
Can you ping the editor of a post?

2:23 PM
Yep, it just doesn't autocomplete @Lix.
They will still get the notification, however.

Lix
@jad - Wow - good to know. I've been tempted many times to make a comment to an editor... Thanks

"I usually have a total of 100+ tabs open across 7 desktops on my machine at any given point in time..." - that is absurd.

I agree, I only need three screens to have 100+ tabs open.

Lix
Indeed - someone needs to educate them on the importance of bookmarks!

LOL. That's not exactly what I meant @Tim.

2:33 PM
:D

Lix
How bizzare - the answer was removed but the clearly off-topic question was left intact...
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9584773/which-facebook-ad-provider-network-should-i-use

I used a custom mod flag on the answer - I think those get processed pretty quick. I just used a normal "Off-Topic" flag for the question.
is excited about being close to being able to vote to close on SO
is a total nerd for being excited about that

Lix
I think its an issue of a mod not wanting to VTC on a post that he has already moderated....
@jad - feels really good - those votes ;)

3:06 PM
@Purmou I hope you didn't try too hard: What is the name of the font

@Martin No reason was given, Jeff just didn't like me.

@Lix A healthy alternative indeed =)
I do need me about 30 upvotes.

3:47 PM
Anyone here?

Lix
always

I'm working with the SOAP protocol, I need some background info.
I have a URL and a sample SOAP request.
I'm not sure how a SOAP request works.

Lix
what do you mean by background info?

Do I just use the SOAP envelope element as my request body?
I have no idea how to make a SOAP request.
I'm writing in Objective-C for iOS, which I'm perfectly comfortable with.

Alot of languages have wrapper / helper classes for SOAP requests.

3:50 PM
But what is the basics of it, before I get to wrappers?

@Moshe Yes, that part is the body of the request.

Lix
I've only used SOAP protocols with flash... and that was a while ago... but my understanding is that a soap request is just an xml stream.... its the libraries that make it easily accessible..

Flash, wow. Been a while since I touched that.

Lix
@moshe - I'm jelous ;)

@Lix Why? I wish it were still as relevant as it was once was. It was fun.
I learned a lot since then and I'd have a blast with it if I could.
Anyway, I have this endpoint and I need to send a SOAP request.

3:52 PM
@Moshe Basically, your header will have the normal stuff (content-type, content-length, the POST destination). And the body will be the actual XML-looking text (the SOAP envelope).

@jadarnel27 GET, I presume, yes?

@Moshe aren't there tools to generate the SOAP interface based on the WSDL it comes with?

Lix
Oh yea - its a great starting point - I loved my days in the flex IDE :P But once you get into slightly more serious things going back to AS3 seems a bit boring (for me at least :)

i.e. I thought the point of SOAP was you never worried about details like that

@awoodland On Windows, but I'm writing for iOS. SOAP is just the transmission protocol.

@Moshe Depends on what you're trying to do. For instance, I have a web service (asmx) and when someone wants to place an order through the SOAP interface the web service exposes, they do a POST to the asmx file on our server.

@jadarnel27 Right now I'm just reading data.
Honestly, I still think that GET vs POST is simply semantics and POST is an extra letter in the header.
GET is 3 characters POST is 4
DELETE is even more
lol

@Moshe Gotcha. I still think that generally you send a request (POST) and then you get a HTTP response back.
@Moshe I'm glad you have such a solid grasp on letter-counting =P

/me likes complaining about dumb conventions, keywords, and buzzwords.
@awoodland Seen it, taking a look now. thanks.
@jadarnel27 Me too.
@awoodland - Not quite working, no idea why.
Ok, kinda working, gonna get back to it.
Thanks folks.
@jadarnel27 - Next time, we'll discuss my counting abilities. ;-)
Tschüß!

@Moshe lol, good luck =)

4:08 PM
The orange button on stackexchange.com doesn't seem to have a solid background color fallback. Either that or Opera Mobile isn't getting the property cascade right
Either way the button's not showing background on Opera Mobile on Android

4:32 PM
Is anyone in here proficient in jQuery?

Lix
Is that a trick question?
Yea - I'd say I know my way around :P @jad - what do you need?

@Lix Nope. Well maybe. If the trick is getting someone to answer a silly question I have
=P

Lix
@jad - shoot

@Lix Ok. I have a third party web app. I can't change the code, but I can include all the javascript I want on the page.
I've got 4 consecutive elements on a page (3 divs and a submit button). I would like to surround those 4 elements with a div (in order to group them together).
I tried using .insertBefore and .insertAfter, but the browser keeps self-closing the opening div tag.

Lix
Ok - I'd say what you want to do is store the actual .html() of the three elements and then remove them. After that create a new div using append or prepend or anything you feel comfortable with and spew the html back into your newly created div.

4:38 PM
I saw "wrapAll", but I don't know how I would select that small subset of elements, as they all have different ids and classes.
@Lix Oh, that makes a lot of sense!

Lix
you can have multiple selectors if you simply seperate them with a comma :
$("#firstId, #secondID")
I think that'll return both the elements...
Yep - coma seperated selectors will return all the elements...

I didn't know that either, thanks. I'm really new at all this web stuff. I've only done the most basic things with jQuery.
@Lix I'll give those ideas a shot and let you know =) Thanks!

Lix
No problem - I have an unhealthy fetish for jquery :P glad to help ;)

I just didn't want to ask a terrible, localized question on SO, or I would have just posted it there =)

Lix
Well its quite basic - but not "close-worthy" :)

4:42 PM
=)
@Lix That worked perfectly, thanks again!

Lix
@jad - Awesome!

With the recent “REP-OCALYPSE” that happened over the weekend, we thought it was a great time to do another podcast – so come join Joel, Jarrod, and Josh as they talk about some of the recent changes to the site and the motivations behind them.

JOEL: This is not necessarily a podcast, but it might turn into something useable, perhaps in the form of a podcast, maybe. The goal is to talk about all of the questions that are getting closed, aka REP-OCALYPSE NOW.

Part One: there has been closing and deletion of very popular old questions going on lately. Are we happy with how this is going? What are the other options? …

We’re pleased to announce that ubuntu.stackexchange.com, in partnership with Canonical, Ltd, has become Ask Ubuntu.

We’re excited to see this come to fruition, because:

I have to admit that I voted strongly against having both Unix/Linux and Ubuntu sites, but I deferred to the overall votes not to merge both inside and outside the company. We collectively said Fork It. It’s clear now that given the strength and self-identification of the Ubuntu community, they are the exception that proves the rule. …

@PopularDemand I didn't realize it was temporarily broken when it didn't work the other day for someone. I thought it had been broken and was finally fixed.
Because I make assumptions. Alot.
Or were you thinking that I'm an Ubuntu enthusiast? Or am I completely misunderstanding why you one-boxed that blog post at me?

No, you were right the first time, I was trying to show you the date on that onebox.
I guess you don't have the userscript that allows you to see the freehand circles I draw on my monitor with a whiteboard marker.

What's with Ask Ubuntu?

@PopularDemand That's correct. I do not have such an userscript.
That would be an impressive userscript =P

@TheUnicornWhisperer Nothing, it was just the earliest example of SO blog oneboxing I could find.

6:21 PM
Actually, at first I thought you had just oneboxed an old blog post.
It took me a second to realize you had oneboxed a chat message where a blog post had been oneboxed.
goes cross-eyed

Hey, @RSolberg. I see you've shed your alter ego.

lol, yeah... I figured before I jumped in the fray with the debate that I'd be me...
I will still maintain my Chester persona for xBox.
So tell me, while I've been away.... Has Rich B found his way back?

Oh, he's been in and out of the box. Currently out but hasn't been active on meta since the last time.

It feels weird trying to catch up on stuff... Clearly meta has changed from feature-requests to rants!

6:42 PM
Oh, you picked a fine time to return. You and Lance. And not just because I now suspect you are each other's alter ego ;-P

LOL... I'm just glad to see that some of the core folks from META (2 years ago) are still very active on the site.... Now employees too... I must have missed my job offer... Lost in the mail or something.

It's all very improbable anyway. Most folks suspect hiring me is part of some incredibly elaborate April Fool's joke.

I've noticed before while reading through very early posts on a gaming forum that almost everyone who was involved at that stage either became a moderator or was eventually banned. Meta has turned out about the same way.

@mmyers We call that "winning" and "losing". Although it's unclear which group is which

For a few minutes, I thought Rich may have spent that time in the penalty box cloning himself.

6:50 PM
We should never have written Transmogrifier on the side of it, that's for sure.

@Martin cstheory or the CS that launched 15 mins ago?

@Kevin CS that launched 15 mins ago

Because it launched 15 mins ago. Do private betas appear in the API?

@Kevin there's no informations about betas.

7:05 PM
Anyway, they're still tweaking things. I'm pretty sure the background on the logo bar changed between posting and checking on my question.

@Kevin everything changed
I posted meta bug
that position of logo is wrong
and when refreshed, everything was alright, with new design

Q: Make the mothership shoot its lasers on hover.

Oak All trilogy sites, and almost all other SE2.0 sites, have a hover effect on their "ask question" button. It can be argued the "ask question" button looks less "clickable" than how it looks in all the other family sites, it's very close to a decoration and thus really needs some way to emphasize ...

Hmmm, what other sites do I visit besides Stack Exchange? My "World Wide Web" page is like 90% Stack Overflow stuff, 10% for two other sites...

9:01 PM
@RSolberg I hope you realize I was not trying to antagonize you with my edit on your answer. I apologize if I did.
Oh well.

9:28 PM
Nah... I get why some will want to edit it. It just isn't something that I want changed. I'm willing to agree to disagree on lots of things going on, but I'm not willing to agree on what I'm not seeing or feeling...
so while nonconstructive it could be, I think there is something to be said for the truth there in... Way too many people are way to amped up on stuff that frankly doesn't even matter nor impact any of us.
I'd like to think that folks could put time and energy into helping others on real sites than trying to argue about why a boat question has worn out its welcome.

@RSolberg I agree that part of the problem is that people feel like "old-timers" have gotten rep unfairly. I think the comparison you made is (mostly) valid. I was just trying to help tone it down and keep it on-topic. But, fair enough - it is your post, and your voice, and I wouldn't want to try and change that.

Thanks... Even if that were a problem, I still don't get the widespread closing of questions. I'm just not sure that I'll ever get it. I'll probably be a bit more active again as I'm now working for myself and can do what I want when I want to do it... Hopefully I'll find a better voice...

"I'd like to think that folks could put time and energy into helping others on real sites..." - I've seen that sentiment over and over again during the last few days from SO users that don't spend much time on meta. It's kind of offensive, not to me personally, but to all the people that put alot of effort into helping users on Meta, and helping Stack Exchange as a whole by doing cleanup and participating in discussions about the site policies.
@RSolberg Congrats on working for yourself. /jealous.

@jadarnel27 Could you place link to the context of that quote?

@StevenJeuris It's something RSolberg just said. I don't know if he meant it that way, I was more ranting about that general sentiment from the pure-SO users.
The sentiment that people on Meta aren't doing anything constructive or helpful, that is.

9:49 PM
@jadarnel27 Okay thanks, I know often that is a problem, but I hate equally much how often the argument "... from SO users that don't spend much time on meta." is used as an argument: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/124643/157047
If you want to argue, argue how Meta is helping other sites. You'll get a lot more positive feedback. ;p

@StevenJeuris I don't quite follow what you're getting at. I wasn't arguing in that rant, I was...well...ranting =)
@StevenJeuris I don't think it would be difficult to argue that many users on Meta are being helpful (answering questions, making useful feature requests, organizing tag clean-ups, discussing the pros and cons of site policies, etc).

@jadarnel27 Well no need to get too much into it then. ;p
@jadarnel27 All the more reason to point that out then instead of relying on the "you don't know meta" reply which can easily be interpreted as a personal insult, and isn't that strong of an argument for your cause.
But this is chat so ... rant on. :)

@StevenJeuris Very good point, I definitely wouldn't use that argument outside of here.
