Hey everyone. Quick question: Where Google gets its description from Stack Overflow? "A language-independent collaboratively edited question and answer site for programmers." (I didn't find it in source code)

@Martin Switch to private browsing mode and look at the sidebar

@YiJiangsProble_ I just see "This is a collaboratively edited question and answer site for professional and enthusiast programmers."

Hmmm, not quite the same then. Maybe they've changed it?
Or is it the floating bar at the top for new users?
No, the top bar says Q&A

@YiJiangsProble_ I don't think so. If you try to see archived version of SO, you'll see there's no such a text

@YiJiangsProble_ Do you think that's a good reason to ask on Meta?

@Martin Well, there is precedent for this type of question for Google's time on questions, but I'm not sure if there's any point in this
Eh, heck, why not. It's a slow Sunday anyway

Hmm. I'm really interested what's behind it. That's the point :)

Q: Question timestamp is incorrect in Google

Pierre-Alain VigeantI was doing a search in Google about Visual Studio custom tools, and the second result pointed to a question in Stack Overflow. Google states that the article date is 21 May 2010, but when viewing the question, the date is May 21 '09 and nowhere on the page is an indication that the question was...

Q: Google doesn't know how to count

Jeff MercadoSo I was doing some Google searching today and actually saw one of my questions in the results. Something was wrong with what was shown by Google however, it is listed as having 3 answers: assassin's creed revelations mute ability not working The actual question itself (as of right now) ...

Q: Even Google knows SO is the one

DiagoDoing a Google Search this evening I noticed the following interesting first result. It seems that even Google knows that SO always has the answer, except the link points to the question C# Automatic Property DeSerialization of JSON. I am not sure if this is a bug, or if SO can even control wh...

That last one is pretty funny.

Q: How to programmatically provide site structure and url path to Google search

systempuntooutSearching Stackoverflow on Google I get this result: Inspecting the HTML source of the Stack Overflow frontpage I can't find any reference of "A language-indipendent collaboratively edited question and answer site for programmers" stuff. I thought it was something related to meta description, ...

@TimStone Interesting
That said, isn't it true that search engines don't use <meta description> contents?

@YiJiangsProble_ yeah, nice.
@YiJiangsProble_ It does, but Google uses DMOZ if description is missing, I assume?

@YiJiangsProble_ Well, they don't base rankings off of them, but I don't know that it's true that they don't look at them at all.

BTW, when I have a page which uses 302 redirect, why does google index that one, too ?

"Since the redirection might be altered on occasion, the client SHOULD continue to use the Request-URI for future requests" <- That

@TimStone hmm. What I want is to prevent google index www.domain.com/p/10 which is just a short page of www.domain.com/category/10-name

1:53 AM
If the first URL is the "wrong" URL for the content, you should be issuing a 301 response anyway.

@TimStone It is not completely wrong but google should see the second one, because it is better for SEO. Okay, using 301 now. Thanks

Ya. It really looks like a timezone
It's uncommon enough that I've never seen it.

Anyone here ever install fink?

Wow, that takes me back
Yeah, I used it a few years ago
Then I replaced it with MacPorts for some reason that I can't even remember now :)

@Chris Is deleting /sw the way to remove it?

Ughhh
Did you know that if you click the Improve button, and the suggested edit gets approved while you're still improving the post, the edit page still doesn't let you submit it unless it's "more substantial" than the previous edit that you're improving.

Ugh indeed.

I'm really coming to hate this stupid more substantial crap.

And I can't get Lynx to build with SSL.
Sure I'm missing something.

Q: How do I build Lynx with SSL on Mac OS X?

MosheI'd like to build and install Lynx on Mac OS X. I've found out that building is as simple as running ./configure, but I'm having trouble building with SSL support. I've downloaded openSSL. How do I include it in my build?

Resets your name to user___, clear profile fields, adds a random invalid email address (so as not to leak your IP) and copies itself (as an unrendered comment) to your "about me", for later reference.

Inelegantly overencoded to avoid being misparsed by the sanitizer; I'm going to try to improve that.
