Awfully quiet in here today.

Hey
How you all doing?

1 hour later…
3:55 AM
Wow, it's been a busy week for Stack Overflow blog entries

Dang it! Not one of The Boondocks' theme songs on YouTube has the drum line I wanted to hear.

I was going to ask "Which drum line?" but...heh.

Heh. The bass drum at the beginning. Everyone seems to be focusing on the lyrics and ignoring the rest of the song.

4:17 AM
@chacha102 hey

10 hours later…

RAWR

3:07 PM
*tumbleweed*

@YiJiangsProble_ You saying that caused my avatar's "arriving in the room" animation to slide into the second spot instead of the first. I will never forgive you.

@YiJiangsProble I feel like this is all we ever talk about.
=)

Hi all!

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA herp derp!

6:52 PM
@TinymooTim :-P

7:06 PM
Hey @amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA! Haven't seen you in here today =)

7:18 PM
hey quick question... how do they drop downs that appear (e.g. when you get a badge) work? What technology provides the real time updates for that? I'm thinking of asking the question, but not sure if the terminology is right (am sure someone else must have asked already)

It's probably jQuery adding a div that slides onto the page.

am wondering how it gets the update, e.g. is it using web sockets or is it polling? (not sure if there's another way to do it)
(I suspected jquery too)

@Egwor Real time? I've never seen one slide down an existing page. Only the counter change when a new page is loaded.

Q: How do badges get awarded? By a service or on change?

SchotimeDo badges get calculated in real time, or do they get calculated by an external service? Does Stack Overflow use any external services to do things? E.g. maintenance, e-mailing, badge calculation?

@PopularDemand Well, the concurrent edit/post closed while responding one does/did
(and it uses a 45 second poll)

^^^ indeed, this happened to me the other day, so I think that info is current

7:25 PM
Oh, right, the question is about all dropdowns. I focused too much on the badge part of that question. Don't mind me, carry on.

nah, that's intersting. I foun
doh
nah, that's interesting, I found a similar link
I was thinking of doing something similar on a web site, and was wondering how it was done
obviously my site will be rather quieter, but it's still interesting to find out more
can obviously do a polling mechanism, but next question is how to get it effectively (easily/cheaply) to the browser
I was looking at pusher.com
interesting, scratches chin

8:25 PM
@Egwor pusherino?

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA AH! You scared me.

9:32 PM

I raised my app prices as an experiment.
