@b_jonas I ham a little sad that the Hat References topic spoiled my idea, but anyway... I still had to do this.

8:18 AM
Attempt #3562 failed. No secret hat is awarded for pinging a staff member with a "Winter is coming" message on the day before the first day of winter.
Will try again tomorrow

@Derpy is the Flying Tiger secret known by now?
If not maybe it's related to flagging enough posts as spam in a day?

8:34 AM
@ShadowWizard I think it isn't - But it seems people are talking about spam - I don't know if Pops posted any hint.

OK, my guess for Flip Flop: upvote an old answer on a question you never visited before. :)

The flip flop hat is a reference to that "what color is this dress" old internet meme
white with gold stripes or blue with black ones.
I just earned Flip Flop.
@ShadowWizard, try this one:
in rapid sequence, downvote a question, then upvote a question, then downvote another
may be enough to stop at two.
If that does not work, then it must be the other thing I did:
go to the sandbox, and rapidly play with the up and down vote buttons on one of the community wiki answer, flipping it up and down.... Leave no vote in the end, it may be important.
@ShadowWizard you have the hat. Down - up - down right?
Then... I have a confession. I did the opposite. And got the white hat instead.
So, we also know the color rule.
@b_jonas you may be interested too ^

11:45 AM
@Derpy nope. My SO profile proves your theory wrong, I fear. Only a single vote today, and it was upvote on some old answer I bumped into.

I know, see the tavern. It is a single vote thing.

Cool, looks like everyone are getting it, lol

but you know...
in David's hat store on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 34 secs ago, by Derpy
@pops - since it seem you only need to vote on the 22 to get the Flip Flop hat (21 where I live, but it is the usual utc problem), I am switching to determine the color rule: for now, my research shows that users that voted Questions got white, and users who voted on Answers got blue.
^ I think this may be a thing.
I need more users

12:01 PM
Do you think some of the secret hats require significant participation on two different SE sites?
OH! I think someone nailed the point of the Flip Flop hat: meta.stackexchange.com/a/271529/222298

@b_jonas That is the rule, but I don't know if the color is indeed random
It seem that once you get it on a site, you get the same color on each site. But I think there must be a rule for the first one.

12:42 PM
Weirdest idea ever
What would happen if you merge two different accounts, one having the blue Flip Flop and the other having the white one?

1:04 PM
@Derpy I think that like badges, hat are "recalculated" - so the new account will have a single hat, based on first site/first vote

1:18 PM
@ShadowWizard In that case, based on how the recalc is made, you could merge two white and get a blue.
Darwin would be proud.
interesting.

@Derpy LOL, good one! :D

I wonder... should I try and compete on that Swag contest?
I did once, and the results weren't great. Also, I remember that someone pointed out that my post was above the length limit, so it is not worth to try and weave a story.

2:14 PM
@Derpy well, my idea isn't successful so far, but I do have plan B. Will be long, but hopefully not too long. Chances of success are still low but who knows. Don't be afraid to try too! :)

2:28 PM
I see we can have multiple entries....

2:46 PM
@ShadowWizard since @animuson said so... do every number from 100 to 1 and just have a different pony plush request on each.
Or even better.... use the 0100 as binary

@Derpy nah, thought about it and prefer to spend the time on my plan B

so it is just 0100 -> 0011 -> 0010 -> 0001
@ShadowWizard I have a madder idea in my mind.... not swag related, and probably not worthy doing.

@Derpy hint? ;)

@ShadowWizard it relates to hats, boredom, the fact that the SE staff still manages to delete the old site every year and would probably earn me very little rep with a lot of work.
Maybe some hate votes from the Grinch crew too.

@Derpy what, something like hat stats archive?
so that the details won't be lost?

2:53 PM
@ShadowWizard Who cares the stats.
I care of the hats. Just the hats.

Anyway, each year I'm amazed at the amount of hats I get without even trying. This year for example I went hunting for one single hat, all the rest are result of my day-to-day activity.
@Derpy so, image gallery?

@ShadowWizard something similar, yes.

I started a room for that, but realized three things:
1. I don't have time to do it right
2. I can't really judge what's worthy to keep
3. I don't have enough motivation

@ShadowWizard You remember last year? There was a post on SO meta
"funny hats avatars"
do you remember how it ended?
Post was deleted.
As far as I go, I don't see enough smiles to try.
Sadly, I don't have her strength

@Derpy yeah, you mean @TelKitty, right? One thing for sure, she got a thick skin

3:06 PM
@ShadowWizard ...

?
So who do you mean? She started something like that last year, or do I remember wrong?
And it was deleted because it was, well, kind of "opinion based" - with lots of things many people simply didn't think were funny
That's why I thought to try and have it as a chat room this year

@ShadowWizard She did? I don't remember. I remember the SO closed/deleted post, but not much more. I would not be surprised if someone tried and failed too.
I simply meant this one
But you know... to return to the original point... The SO topic from last year was deleted.
yet....

Q: The Winterbash Hatmas "Photo" Album (& maybe embarrassing yearbook)

doppelgreenerEvery year, there are beautiful fantastic displays with hats and avatars. We see others with avatars we love, or we get that perfect dapper combination and enjoy it to bits. They get boxed up and disappear forever at the end of Winterbash. But they don't have to be! Let's preserve some of it, at...

this one lives... and people laugh happy there.

@Derpy nice, looks like per-site metas are much more "fun friendly" than MSE.
Probably because MSE core is after all people who regular SO

3:22 PM
@ShadowWizard So, why would the SO regulars be "worse"/"less friendly"?

@Derpy SO is a harsh place... so naturally (for me, at least) long time users who have to deal with the place every day, are also more harsh than usual
Of course not everyone, it's just a very broad observation

@ShadowWizard And isn't the harsh place made up from the same users who are harsh because the place is harsh?

@Derpy not exactly. There are always new people there, but only the strongest/most harsh survive. But yes, it's also a dog biting his own tail thing.
Long time users are harsh, so new users keep complaining, causing those long time users to just get angry every time.

3:39 PM
@ShadowWizard ... You... believe? To me, it is all about the users, not the age.

@Derpy of course, never said age is a factor. Unless you mean seniority, i.e. for how long one is a member?

@ShadowWizard yes, I meant that, sorry

So in my opinion time does matter, people might become more harsh as time pass by

To me, it seem that people are perfectly able to be harsh as soon as they want to, no need for aging up like cheese. But again, that is only my view

3:57 PM
Back to hats! New idea about Flip Flop color... suppose user A got the Flip Flop, then user B, on same site. So A will have blue and B will have white, then when the next user will get the hat, it will be blue again. Meaning not random, if you know who got the last hat in a site, you'll know what color you will get.
Too bad there are no time stamps for when each hat was awarded, like badges have.

@ShadowWizard I think it was proposed in the other room already, maybe on a whole network scale instead of begin site based.

@Derpy hard to belive network scale, but who knows...

@ShadowWizard well, you can browse all the pages in the leaderboard tomorrow, and count up
if the two totals are equal or differ at most by one...

I don't remember if my old post here I had deleted or what. You may still be able to see it.

Q: Should employees with head injuries be allowed to post on meta?

Tim PostWhile yodeling to myself quietly in our warehouse today, a pallet full of mugs came crashing down on my head, and gave me a concussion idea. First, it's very unlucky to go yodeling around on a skate board in a dark warehouse, and second, we could really use a short creative writing contest. Fort...

^ @ShadowWizard this should also explain you why I am unsure if I should take part in that competition.

@Derpy yes, you posted this as @SPA and deleted a day after: meta.stackexchange.com/a/212602/152859
(if you'll log in in that account you should see it)
If you want a screenshot, let me know.
