@badp - can you define "screwed up"? What is looking odd to you? just so we're clear...

1 hour later…
6:30 AM
@MarcGravell I think he's talking about the way they rendered; I see the one from the Gaming transcript like this:
If I post that link here now I see this (which looks normal):

kthx - looking

Also I just noticed the transcript timestamps are in UTC instead of local; is that intentional?

yes. It originally had both (indeed, under the hood it still supports both), but there were a lot of issues that came up when looking at things like SEO

A: How do I audit my reputation?

Jeff AtwoodMake sure you are logged in, and visit http://stackoverflow.com/reputation http://serverfault.com/reputation http://superuser.com/reputation http://meta.stackoverflow.com/reputation This will give you a detailed audit / report of your reputation over time, reflecting the current voting values...

I think that is a css style that got renamed. We haven't re-rendered all the old messages. This only impacts old messages... I'm not sure it needs any new handling, tbh.

@MarcGravell Yeah, I wouldn't

6:50 AM
I've re-rendered that individual message, and it works - confirming the problem

7 hours later…
2:02 PM
Right. Who took down the server. Come on. Speak Up. Public lashings aren't that bad :P

Let's just say it wasn't a code problem ;p

@Diago Sowwy, it was me
haha j/k :-)

Points finger at @Josh
no, too late; your claim of responsibility is accepted

@MarcGravell LOL
Hey cool, @balpha can create a custom popup message at the top!
that's awesome

@Josh You again. Honestly. You would swear we need to ban you or something.

2:04 PM
@Marc, /kick Josh
if he comes back, /ban !

@rchern Ow! Not so hard!

@MarcGravell So who did you give access to the server to? Not even I am allowed to play in there.

/slap Josh would have been enough
@Diago They left the backdoor open :-)

so...what is the custom error page?

@Josh I hope not. Dad is going to be very very upset if someone did.

2:06 PM
just go to /error for that
the 404 is more amusing, though

You should take down chat for a day. We'd probably solve cancer and all those other pesky diseases due to the increased work being done.

@MarcGravell I love it. I CAN HAS ERRORZ?

I love this line:
> Yes, we do look at every error. We even try to fix some of them.

@Diago That's great

(runs off to update all his custom error pages)

2:09 PM
@#$%
I guess you fixed that bug...

@balpha cleaned that up, yes

OK well I actually have to do a crapload of work today so I'll be hanging out (working) in The tavern, if anyone needs me or if anything exciting happens just @Josh me in there

@Josh I think you want a coffeeshop, not a tavern.

Or find me temporarily in the Server Fault room looking for linux server upgrade advice prior to an upcoming meeting
@PopularDemand Agreed, but beer helps me think ;-)

10 minutes to home time

2:28 PM
@MarcGravell Where did the 404 come from btw?

Again, blame @balpha
2

what?
... and then he leaves, ignoring my protest

2:56 PM
When we click on a room when we're in a room ( on the 'other rooms you're in') page could we please get a 'Open room in a new tab/window' option?

@LanceRoberts what's wrong with middle-click/ctrl-click?

IT'S ALL WRONG

@balpha yes, I can do that, but the option should be grouped with 'switch' and 'leave'.

the question is: why?
I'd rather have less target="_blank" than more
4

@balpha, because it belongs in the group of 'room options': 'switch', 'leave' and 'open'. If the first two options will have a little visible icon for people to left-click on, then the other one should also. We shouldn't have two different [exclusionary] ways of accessing options.

3:12 PM
"open"?

@balpha, I don't mind having extra ways of accessing the options, but the 'normal' way presented by SO of accessing the options should have all options included.

@LanceRoberts I don't understand this sentence

@balpha, There are two methods that SO has implemented to access the options:
1. left-click on room name and select item from menu
2. left-click on icon next to room name
the third option that works for 'open' is
3. middle-click the room name
The most obvious method of the icons next to the room name is obviously the way SO has designed the interface.
So the most intuitive use of the interface should support all the options.
(Though I'd also put it in the menu list)

Sorry, but I really fail to see your point
you want the same link twice, once with target=_blank and once with target=_self?
and having this would have what advantage?

It's about how humans work with interfaces, the SO chat interface should allow users to use the same methodology to access any room options.
Right now it's just interface confusion.
And yes, it's just a little thing.

3:17 PM
opening a room in a new tab isn't even an option
it's a browser functionality

You're saying that you can't program an icon that will open the room in a new tab?
(I'm not a web programmer so I'll believe it if you tell me.)

sure I can -- but you keep claiming that this option is already there

@LanceRoberts SHUN!!!!

and should also be one of the icons

No, I'm saying the option is there with middle-click, but it's not there in the canonical SO chat room option interface (icons/menu).
So you use one interface to do one thing, and a different one to do another of the same type of thing.

3:20 PM
right, the option is there because the browser gives it to you

11 mins ago, by balpha
I'd rather have less target="_blank" than more
could you just add hundreds of stars to this please?

@Chacha102 <flamebait>You web programmers with your browsers and scripts, client side mumbo-jumbo. Go write some C you html hippy.</flamebait>

@CRoss <flamebait>You old fashion C programmer! Stop waving your cane at me and go polish your dentures!</flamebait>

Please, no more links to the same stuff. I'm having enough trouble with the ones here now.

4:10 PM
Can we have a preference to not let rooms push feed items to you in a popup?

4:38 PM
@MichaelMrozek That is a preference -- but it's the room owner's preference

@balpha do the room owners also control which feeds are available for their rooms, or can they only toggle off the ones they don't like?

which feeds get posted to the room and if they get posted as normal messages or into the popup ("ticker", as we call it), that's solely the room owner's / owners' decision

4:54 PM
@balpha Thanks.
I was about to point out that the ticker is almost unnoticeable, but I just realized it's probably because I'm an oddball with a portrait-oriented monitor and it's much less hidden in landscape configuration.
And honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the ticker, and the last thing I want is for it to be more obtrusive, so that's good.

it's really made for room owners that want to have a feed in their room, but it's posting so much that you can't really have a conversation
(look at the serverfault room until two days ago)

@balpha Gotcha. I can definitely see use cases for it, my dislike of it is based more on the contents (Chacha's tavern naming suggestion, and that's coming from the person who invented the contest) than the existence of the ticker per se. Now that I know it's controlled by him, I'm not as opposed to it. I am, however, more opposed to Chacha.

5:12 PM
@PopularDemand to be fair, I added that feed to the room :) -- but chacha could remove it

@balpha And we're back to "again, blame @balpha."

yeah, I can live with that... turns around, sobbingly

It's ok, that's what greasemonkey is for

@MichaelMrozek If I wanted to do work, I'd turn chat off.

5:32 PM
@PopularDemand If I wanted to know every time somebody posted an answer on the naming question, I'd sit on meta refreshing it continuously

@MichaelMrozek I'd just mark it as a favorite, and let the existing notification mechanism do the work. My increased opposition to Chacha stands.

I'm having trouble seeing the benefit of the ticker feed also.
Maybe it was because I was expecting something different: the feed in a different container, but still like the feed.

6:03 PM
@balpha, bug -- at least on my machine -- in Regulator HQ
Shog posted something two hours ago, the "last message 2 hours ago" notification came up
I posted one message
I migrated that message to another room
Now it says "2 hours later..." both before and after the migrated message
Presumably because half the system thinks the migrated message is gone, and the other half remembers that it used to be there?

@balpha Your mod flag counter mechanism jquery is till broken. Just FYI :P
And it popped up about 3 minutes after I cleared the idiotic flag.

@Diago yeah, I see it, too :)

@balpha Why did I forget and even bother to come and tell you :)

@PopularDemand not quite -- but it sounds like the JS is doing what it's supposed to do :)
I'll look at that, but it's a real edge case, so lo-pri

@balpha I will take your word on this.
@balpha I would expect nothing more.

6:22 PM
@balpha Is it a bug that I can reply to a question in the future, when editing?

nope, that's by design
call it an easter egg ;)

@balpha Awesome!!!!!!!! I just got to see it in action :)
K. Love ay. Bye.

6:56 PM
@balpha Update re this bug: once someone posted another message in the room, the second "2 hours later..." vanished, making this even-lower-pri.

you could also just F5 ;)
