This chat service is really cool and good idea......
thanks the SO team....
really loving it

A great idea just occurred to me. What if SO chat would be re-built so it's based on a time-tested real-time chat protocol. People could connect with their native clients. Any additional functions that the chat has and the protocol has not, could be made available by plug-ins for those clients. That would be so standards-compliant! As to which protocol to choose... hmm. Maybe IRC?

@balpha How can we request a better sound for a site chat?

2:21 PM
@Pekka, heh.

@Pekka I have a better idea, how about it piggybacks on that awesome chat engine the guys at stackoverflow built?

What if the guys who wrote the awesome SO chat could write an excellent API for it so we could port it to the client of our choice?

2:52 PM
what if you didn't have to use your mouse so much?
oh wait...

@CRoss given the extremely subjective nature of sounds, anything short of "here's a sound file; most of our users like it" probably won't be enough

what if i can get most people to agree that we don't like the current one? (;

Relatedly, is it just me, or is the SO chat sound much louder than the MSO one? I haven't gotten notifications close enough together on each site to reasonably judge, but for some reason it seems that way.

hmm, i can't check now either but seems right. i can't stand the so notification >_>

5:08 PM
@rchern Well, that odd favicon script sort-of-but-not-really replaces the title bar notifications
And also, the flashing background thingy just doesn't cut it if you'd only like to know if you are @-mentioned

5:32 PM
@YiJiang, i was talking about the sound notification.

@rchern Yeah, I know, but there really isn't a good alternative to that, innit?

Ignored users appear in the user list as 16×16 pixel large images. Is this by design?

@YiJiang, the sound here and on WA is fine. It is just the SO chat sound that annoys me.

@radp yes

it doesn't work very well :)

5:36 PM
how so?

Q: Ignored users show up in the "other rooms you're in" pane

radpEven though I elected to ignore a user everywhere, I still can read his messages from the "other rooms you're in" pane -- thus making ignoring not very useful.

this shouldn't be the case
what exactly were you seeing?

@balpha Mark C saying "troll bait, baby" in the Tavern chatroom -- I could see it while in Chat feedback

@radp Weird. Shouldn't it just shouldn't it just go to the end of the list of users and get separated with a divider or something

@radp did he say that before or after you started ignoring him?

5:40 PM
@balpha if he said that after, I didn't read it. I don't have a timestamp for my ignore action, obviously.

oh, good idea
I do
but he said more afterwards
which then did not show up

If it did show I didn't see it :)
It's easier to tell what is than what isn't I'm afraid. :/

so it actually works as expected. But I agree that considering all other messages are hidden, it might make sense to hide the old one in the sidebar as well...
hmm...
this somewhat ties in with the whole "what to display in the sidebar when the last message in the other room gets deleted" thing...

okay, I'm sorry about this faux bug then :)
would you like it deleted?

your choice -- if you leave it up, I'll add an answer later

6:36 PM
if the 16×16 user icon is by design, then you have a bug - a rejoining ignored user gets to have a 32×32 icon.

True. I'm actually not sure if we should show an ignored user in the list at all -- that's pretty much a relic from the days when the only way to unignore a user was by clicking their avatar in chat.

You mean there are other ways now? :)

there were other ways long before we ever went public
the 16x16 thing is really old
