@rene quick question... I got a new SQL Server and need to connect to it from other computer using IP. I created new login, set the server to accept SQL Authentication, and when using the SQL Studio I can login fine. But when trying to connect using the IP address it failed with "login failed for user", as if user/password is incorrect. Anything I missed? Thanks!

@ShadowWizard what are the protocols that are enabled for SqlServer? Is that box where you manage to access it with ssms on the same box? In the same network?

I also try to connect from within the SQL server machine itself, even giving 127.0.0.1 cause the connection to fail, while using the SQL instance name works.

The server initially had SQL Server 2012 installed and I upgraded to 2014, might it cause such problems?

@rene oh probably my test program which try to connect, but the connection failed with " Login failed for user ..." error

As if SQL Authentication isn't configured to be used over IP

@ShadowWizard can you have a peek in the errorlog: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\ERRORLOG

The 13 ^ might need a different number in your case

@rene that works... kind of. If I don't specify database it works but when adding the database I actually need it throws a different error "Cannot open database "Hapoel" requested by the login. The login failed."

Add a user to hapoel and link it with the login that you used

and then you might need to grant the user some permissions

if that works you need tp remove db_owner again and add the actual permisions

Ok, on the one that is already there, add the role db_owner to it

so that is the alter statement for the correct user

again, if you can login after that, make sure to remove it and replace with permissions that are sane

@rene I want to try a new login from scratch, then new user.... when adding new user what type to give it?

I did "SQL User with login" for the one that doesn't work, should it be a different type?

@ShadowWizard are you 100% sure your server is accepting sql user accounts? In the sqlserver log (the ones accesibale from SSMS) should state at startup what its mode is.

@rene as mentioned in the beginning, I can login with the user from SSMS and from external test program when giving the server name and not IP. So I think we are barking at the wrong tree with the user permissions stuff. :(

Can get one easily by upvoting via the app, too lazy... and not using the app so feels like cheating...

Using it just to get notifications in real time, then maybe comment when not around computer.

I hunted for hats for real only one or two years, then decided to just see what I get from ordinary use. Usually it's pretty much. :D
