This especially comes into play for me with roach/hydra and to a lesser extent with ling/roach. I want my roaches in front of the hydras to absorb damage, but since roaches (with speed) are faster than hydras they just get separated unless I spending some time microing their movement.

@badp It's a very different game. Even the official names for the modes spell it out: Creative Mode is for Creating things.
Survival Mode is about surviving.
Survival Mode is a much more fun game though - the fundamental gameplay of dig, explore, build, is still there, but now there is an element of danger to the whole affair
because Creepers manage to make any trip into someplace dark, or even any night outside away from a shelter a truly horrific experience. And an amazing one.

Step 1) Punch trees until you have a decent supply of wood. Build crafting table, many sticks.
Step 2) Use crafting table to make Wooden Pickaxe, harvest stone, gravel, coal.
Step 3) Make many many torches, stone pickaxe, stone shovel, stone sword. Dig for iron. ALWAYS KEEP TORCHES ALONG YOUR MINE.
Once you have Iron, you should track down enough Diamond for a Diamond Sword and other tools which can basically last forever, some redstone for a compass, and then just harvest what you need to build what you want.
But in general, you can carry more by hauling raw 'tree' rather than refining it into wood/sticks until you actually need wood/sticks.

Wooden picks can only break basic stone, gravel, sand, and dirt. You need to make at least a stone pick to be able to get coal, iron, and other higher end stuff.
