Q: Photos needed for the site design.

JinHi all. I'm currently in the process of wrapping up the design concept for the final theme when the Photography site graduates from Beta. I need your best photos for part of the design mockup. landscape orientation please. I'll scale it down to 375x210 px, so please make sure it'd scale well, cr...

Jin
5:08 PM
hi guys

@Jin Hi
How goes?

Jin
the design concept for photo site is ready, i was hoping someone would have posted a photo so I don't look pretentious using my own :)
do you want a sneak peak before I post it?

Would be cool
what sort of photo(s) are you after?

Jin
it doesn't matter really, as long as it's well done. it can be abstract, landscape which i prefer
but honestly any would do
i'm using one of my own for now
there's a new feature exclusive to the Photo site, that we'll rotate the top photo each week

Did you see the logo I knocked up a while back?

Jin
5:16 PM
from memebers' submissions. I think this 1) gives a good balance to a minimalist design 2) get members engagement

That was loosely based on the same image I use for my gravatar

Jin
ah seems like we have similar ideas

I reckon an abstract image would work well in the concept

Jin
i didn't see the thread where you posted this in
i did a search on "logo" on meta.photo

That was for an SE1 site -- still used on the twitter account that tweets everything

Jin
5:19 PM
what are your thoughts so far about the design?
do you like the members' photo showcase idea?

I like the tabs not being tabs

Jin
the look i'm going after is a clean photo magazine-ish look

I love the showcase idea
I hate Lightroom sucking all the life out of my laptop at the moment though :(

Jin
this one has been hard to design. at first i thought bout using the usual "lens" "camera" "film" etc visuals. but i realized it's a bit tried and tacky. so i wanted to go with something more modern and simple. in order to do that i need a photo to balance the simplicity on the site.

I'll push a few of my more popular Flickr pics onto your meta thread if you like?

Jin
5:22 PM
sure
so with this design, the Site Message box will be deserved also as the photo description box too.
oh btw, forgot to mention the Meta design concept...

Could that work as a click through where applicable?

Jin
what do you mean?

So, click on the featured pic to go to the member's website (etc.)

Jin
oh the photo won't be clickable. but where it says "by member" is a link that points to their user profile page
forgot to mention the Meta.photo design
since the parent site has a mostly black/white theme already, for meta, I was thinking we can make it a "negative" version of the parent site
it's a bit wild, but I wonder if it'd be well received.

That could work really well

Jin
5:27 PM

You could even make the featured image as if it were a C-41 neg ;)
Just posted a couple to that thar thread

Jin
i normally don't do dark themes. but i feel it'd may be OK for meta.photo because 1) a lot photography forums i've seen use dark themes, 2) Meta.photo is only used by a small fraction of users, power users

Dark works well for photo related stuff

Jin
i didn't put a photo in the meta header because it'd be extra maintenance, also i'm not sure how it'd turn out. would be extra distracting depending on the photo

maybe
could still C-41 effect type of thing on the logo/favicon

Jin
5:33 PM
is C-41 effect simply inverting the original?
if you look at the meta design above, is what i did a C-41 effect?

Yes and no. It's the process used in film photography and isn't a true invert in the RGB sense

Jin
i see.
so green won't be magenta for the answer/accepted colors?
@RowlandShaw can you think of a title for your 2 photos?

Second is "Fluffy"
Other is "No Fishin"

Jin
ok thanks!
i'll be posting the design brief soon on photo.meta
and please feel free to post any critiques, this is your site after all :)

I'm just playing with C41 (whilst swearing at lightroom for bringing my PC to a crawl)

Jin
5:45 PM
@RowlandShaw switch to mac? :0
I love Mac, but I'm not a fan boy... one thing i really love about Mac is actually the LED display. photos look gorgeous, and the gamma is superb

Have considered it a few times
Still seem overpriced for what they are, though

Jin
what held me back from switching to Mac for the longest time was, I was comparing $ to specs. in that sense, PCs always win. also I was a gamer back then, PC was just better for gaming period

And it is the Adobe stuff making this suck

Jin
but once i switched (after 3 dells died), i realized Mac offers a whole new experience
the iMac i have runs everything smoothly. i can have photoshop, illustrator, LR, dreamweaver open at once
but anyway, enough of me pitching for Macs. I'm starting to sound like a fanboy after all.

I'm never sure how possible it would be to transfer licences across platforms
After all, PS is not cheap

Jin
5:53 PM
i bought new cs4 for osx
on my old pc i had cs
i'm not sure how to transfer, since i didn't upgrade

If that is the new site design, PLEASE do not go with white text on dark background

Jin
@WinstonSmith that's for meta

it's very difficult for some people to read; impossible for me
i can focus on it for maybe 15 seconds, then i simply can't see it at all, and when i switch back to a white site/page i can't see it for a while either :)
maybe something to do with colourblindness
I think the site looks great as it is... much better than stackoverflow

Jin
@WinstonSmith what if it's not solid black, but a darker gray. would that smooth things a bit? this is for the Meta site only.
the main site is not dark

For me, probably not - but it might be worth doing some research. I've often wondered if there are many people like myself that find white on black extremely difficult to read

Jin
5:58 PM
@WinstonSmith in my experince interacting with color blind users, it seems many of the use the "high contrast" mode the OS has. in many screenshots they showed me, it's actually light text on black background
see:

Q: May 13 updates break high contrast Windows mode

JoshuaWith the new updates applied within the past 24 hours or so I can no longer see the vote up/down buttons. For accessibility reasons I found it necessary to replace all website specified colors with browser colors, and this also removes all background images, and in fact all images placed by any ...

@Jin The magenta would end up being closer to #7f2d88 by my calculations

Rowland - it may work well for those who use it, but I wonder how many can't use it

Although I was expecting a major orange shift

Jin
@WinstonSmith i may tune the Meta theme down some, so it's not a pitch black background, and not harsh white for question title.

Yea, I think it's the contrast that makes it so difficult

Jin
6:03 PM
I only thought a dark theme is a bit safer for the photography crowd since I've seen a lot of dark themes photography forum/blogs out there. plus this is only for Meta, used by a small group of people. I wouldn't do that to the main site.
@WinstonSmith i think you're right about the contrast. i agree it's a bit harsh now. i'll tune it down.

What's the rationale for a redesign anyway? I think both look good - clean and simple, minimalistic - great for a reference site.
Which is what this is after all, as opposed to a site for photos

@WinstonSmith That's the "default" dummy design common to all Stackexchange sites -- this is to give it an identity of its own

Didn't realise that. They did a good job :)

Jin
@WinstonSmith what Rowland said.
for example, the new math site just launched, it shed off the Sketchy theme. math.stackexchange.com

The cooking one looks good too

6:06 PM
@WinstonSmith It turns out that @Jin is too good at design :)

Jin
and game development site gamedev.stackexchange.com
you're too kind. it's really a challenge each time. because i have to shift my normal style dramatically. I want to design a theme that's fitting for the topic of the site. So I spend more time on thinking, researching the subject matter, than actually implementing.

That's always the hardest part. Nothing worse than staring at a blank page

@Jin did you want a copy of the PSD that was used to do the logo for twitter..com/photogangle ? (Either way, will I be able to have a fancy pants alpha channelled icon to update that with when the site is ready to go live?)

Jin
@RowlandShaw ok. the reason i wanted a pure squared shaped logo is so that it flushes well with the rest of the site
it seems we had the same idea about using a polaroid pic as the logo
another reason is, a square shaped logo works really well for favicon, apple-touch-icon, twitter avatar etc
and course i'll send you a high res version, with transparent bg

It might be better not to use mine, as it was associated with an SE1 site, too
And I suck at graphic design, comparatively
I'd do cheesy things like have 35mm sprockets down the side and silly stuff like that

Jin
6:15 PM
i actually thought about using that too!

yuo aren't my slightly older non-evil twin, by any chance? ;)

Jin
but then i realized photography today is mostly digital, and the more typical visual cues i use "lenses" "film strips" etc would clutter the design
i think in essence, the beauty of photography is really simplicity, it gets the emotion across.
so for the site design, the content still rules over others. the design is just a "pleasant shell."

I did wonder if we'd see some aperture blades in there, which is another one of the clichés

Jin
i did too.. in fact, i started it in illustrator and abandoned it
i actually liked it, but a circular icon didn't look right with the rest of the site. so i went with polaroid instead.

It must be difficult to come up with alll the themes

Jin
6:25 PM
time is not on my side. :) otherwise it's a fun process.

6:36 PM
I wish someone could make keywording photos "fun"
Still, I'm 1% of the way through doing this week's trip

Jin
whoa. how many photos did you take?
and what camera do you have?

I had a 5D mk 2 with me, and took 325 in three days. Quite slack of me really
I have "quite a few" cameras
(5 in active service if you count the one on my phone)
(1 Flim SLR, 2 DSLR, 1 Digital Compact, 1 Phone)

Jin
ah a Canon guy
I have a D90, which I may upgrade to a D7000 soon.
but then again, I don't take enough photos to justify an upgrade.

One of the projects I'm working on has the objective of photographing every single pub, restaurant and cafe

Jin
neat
haven't uploaded anything in a while..

6:43 PM
This is why people shouldn't write off phone cameras:

Jin
agreed. i even blogged about it:

The best camera is the one you have with you?

Jin
yes

So true though

Jin
in a general sense of course. but there's no question that dslrs > camera photo for planned photos.

6:48 PM
I try to take a camera most places
Did lead to this random shot the other week:

Jin
nice. was there some kind of techy event?

Don't think so
Think it was just an advertising stunt for a model shop that opened up in the shopping centre there
I happened to be waiting for my wife in the book store opposite at the time :)

Jin
I went to a Halloween event last weekend at the Air and Space Museum in DC. there were a bunch SW characters there too.

I tried to capture them as if it were a normal everyday event for the town
they did attract quite a crowd

Jin
i really love candid photography, probably most my favorite.
it's the only photo journal i've done. went through a lot of trouble shooting it
getting up at 3AM, having my car towed etc.

6:55 PM
Having the car towed is a bit extreme ;)
Do like your long exposures on the underground
er, subway

Jin
yes.
mostly because i don't have a fast lens to take non long exposure photos anyway :)

They work well, though

Q: Design for Photography Site

JinHi all. I'm Jin and I'll be working on the designs for the Stack Exchange sites as they graduate from the beta phase. Each site will have its own unique theme that will reflect its topic. However, all sites will share quite a bit of common elements so they feel like they're part of the Stack Exch...

posted
could you mark it as featured?

Will do

Jin
i hope it will be well received. I'm always nervous whenever i post a design...
luckily so far most have been liked.
and course, please post your honest opinions, you won't hurt my feelings. :)

Have un-featured the other, for the moment

Jin
yeah good idea.

It links across, and is essentially the same topic

Jin
7:19 PM
yep
