Q: Do racial origins stack?

Peter SecklerIf I take a feat that gives me a certain origin but I already have a specific racial origin, do they stack or is my racial origin replaced? Case in point: Calistar the Eladrin is a fey creature, but he wants to take the Haunting Shade feat, which says "Your origin changes to shadow if it isn’t ...

Q: What are the "Dark Powers"?

C. RossWhat are the dark powers in Ravenloft? I'm not asking for a list, but rather a description of these entities.

Q: Can you target an area you cannot see?

C. RossIn D&D 4e can you target an area spell on an area that is not visible. For example a rogue uses an ability to give total concealment over an area, can a wizard cast fireball centered in that area of darkness?

12:27 PM
hi @yhw42, I've been wanting to talk to you

@C.Ross: hello!
I'm just trying to catch up over coffee... I don't have much time.
I would be more than happy to talk soon, though!

ok, ping me in here when you have a few mins

Sounds good.

@CRoss: Hey. I've got some time before I start work... Whats up?
(I assume its about the Grimoire question...)

Yes, indeed
I think the consensus on meta is that we don't want to allow that kind of question ("Lets make content"), but I see only one close vote on the question

I noticed that.

Would you have problems with me closing it?

I don't have issues with you closing it as we discuss it, but I don't know if 3 is a consensus.

I don't see anyone disagreeing on meta, though I did just notice RS Conley thinks it should stay open (on the question)

1:59 PM
True.
You have made the "not a question" argument, do you also agree with the "don't create content" argument?

... I think it mainly revolves around the "Not a question" argument, we create content to answer questions all the time (SO, here, everywhere else; code is content; design is content)
but I think your question might be analogous to the hated plz send teh codez questions on SO.

It could be rewritten as a question, but it did feel somewhat artificial that way to me when I was writing it.

yeah ... I think that's a good sign it doesn't belong ... if it doesn't make sense as a question
obviously I have a bent toward the whole question thing :-)

I see that :)
What about the question in my answer on meta? (I hadn't phrased it that way when I was writing the 'question' on Sunday. )

A: What do you think about "A Grimoire of Magic Item Curses and Boons"?

yhw42This is a comment I left on the original question: Would you say the question "What are properties that when added to a magic item bump its effective level up by one?" is within the scope of this site? Would that be a valid community wiki question? That (and several closely relate...

What you're asking is: "Is the content ok and it just needs to be reformatted, or does it belong here at all?"

2:12 PM
Yes.

I personally think the content is more suited for other media
obviously Mr. Conley disagrees

OK. I guess I'm not seeing the difference between asking "Does adding a property of -2 init change the effective level by -1?" and putting it into a collection off the bat...
Which maybe you would also vote off topic :)

I'd have to think about that one ... it might be overly subjective, but someone could probably find a good comparison and make a reasonable argument
as for the difference, style and format matters
SE is about getting people the best answers to their questions the fastest ...

Sure.

your post is about gathering a list of ideas for changing items, no?

2:19 PM
Yes. I cam across a forum post where there was a list of some 'curses'.
I liked the idea a lot and was wondering what would give an approx bump up in the same way the curses bumped down.

hmmmmm

(I don't DM or have DDI or Dragons so I have no idea if that mechanic is published or not... which I think is why the created content argument bugs me.)

No, it's not
it's pretty obvious D&D4e is not intended for users to create their own content
if so you might not need to buy as many books :-)

Oh... :) I've tried buy as few as I could... (although the RC seems like a must have now!)

yeah ... I hate to buy a book with no new content ...

2:29 PM
OK.... Gotta go off to the coal mine and get to work!

ok, later

My only problem with it is its broad scope. In my experience, the broader scope the question - even worse are "here, put cool new magic items here" - are worthless because you get answers of such wildly varying nature and quality that no one actually uses them.
Yours is scoped a lot more tightly than that, but still... I guess as a CW, it's OK, but needs to be restated in the form of a question - my concern is that suddenly the peanut gallery craps out a huge raft of "grimoire" threads all of which will suck.

BTW: @CRoss: Thanks for all the work you do as Mod (and the other mods too, mxyzplk!). I appreciate you seeking me out and working through what the community/site is about.

If we wanted a user generated content section we could add a Wikia wiki as an adjunct - might be a better format for stuff like that
or "partner" with an existing one. It might be interesting to do that on the "discussion forum" side as well - "want to yap, go see our partner forum site rpg.net" for example
have a good day yhw42

2:52 PM
@mxyzplk I think something like that would be better
you know my opinion, sites that do the the best are those that have a core ability/goal and focus on that ... we won't be useful as just another forum

agreed. SE is a specialized format for specific applications. I don't know why people end up feeling all butthurt about it. "Why can't I use the one tool for every single thing I want to! What if I want to play a game online using SE? The Gm can vote my answers upa nd down if my actions succeed or fail!!!"

lol!!!
Yes, indeed
but what I can't understand is all the people griping about the question, but won't vote to close

Q: How to encourage users to vote to close?

C. RossOn the Role-playing Game site we have a problem in that users will not vote to close a question, even if they they say it doesn't belong. For example this question: A Grimoire of Magic Item Curses and Boons Has three downvotes, several comments saying it doesn't belong (from users over 500...

Welcome back by the way :-)

3:21 PM
thank man only here a couple more minutes, the movies start soon!

lol, enjoy

Loads of good movies though! My reports are going up (pretty late, I'v eonly gottne 2 of the days blogged up) on my usually-rpg blog mxyzplk.wordpress.com

3:45 PM
It is my sole vote to close btw.
@C. Ross - are the moderators allowed to cast a normal vote to close? Or do you only have the option to close it completely?

question feed is slowing down.

Yes
I was pondering the legitimacy of plundering enworld and the wotc boards for interesting questions and reposting them here
ideally, I'd follow that up by pointing people from those sites here for the answers :)

4:25 PM
@PatLudwig Right now we can only close completely, there is a request out there to give us a normal vote

Ah, that's unfortunate

@PatLudwig Yes, that would be legitimate, just be sure to a) rephrase the question, b) link to your "inspiration"

Q: What is a good way to become a better NPC/monster actor?

Chuck - AcedrummerOne of the biggest problems I have as Game Master, (going on 30+yrs) is in portraying NPC and Monsters in any RPG. Is there a good resource for becoming a better 'actor'? Instead of just saying... the monster or NPC acts like or says blah, blah, blah... I prefer to act out the part whenever I ...

There's a good question.

Indeed

Q: How to know what last affected my reputation?

Pat LudwigSeems like I should be able to figure this out on my own ... yet here I am :) Example, I returned from lunch to find my reputation went up 35 points. Cool! However, I'd like to know specifically which questions/answers of mine got notched up (or down) during that period. Is there an easy way ...

erg...nice timing @C. Ross :)

@PatLudwig with regard to?
oh, accepting right before you posted, sorry :-/

7:56 PM
@CRoss Yep, you got it! I wasn't completely happy with that answer, so after most of the day without you accepting it I decided to weigh in

I try to wait a couple of hours ... sorry

lol, no worries

Heh, congrats. Make with the closing :)
