Q: What to do in Labyrinth Lord when both PCs and Foes are surprised?

Adam FlynnIn Labyrinth Lord, when there is a possibility of surprise for both PCs and foes, both sides roll 1d6. A 1-2 indicates that side is surprised for the first round. If both sides roll a 1-2, both sides are surprised for the first round. A surprised side can take no action. This is a nice simple...

Q: I really like Road of Knives. Are there any rulesets that would make this game more complex?

ixtmixilix Road of Knives is a "battle blog" wherein Zak Smith, Shawn Cheng, and other artists take turns drawing monsters fighting each other. from the website, Road of Knives Basically, I'm looking for any similar games or rulesets that involve drawing each others' characters. Ideally, I'd lik...

And back to work.
Must not think about minecraft.

3:51 PM
lol, I had to quit that game cold turkey.

I got friends running a server
So it's a big game of 'You built a neat thing I must do better!'

4:20 PM
lol, I'm avoiding trying it

There's no real goal so far. It's just a sandbox.
But a rather simple, fun one.

4:45 PM
From what I can tell, I'm not the only one confused by the way the rulebook was written in Deathwatch.

so, any actual role playing going on for y'all?

Dark Heresy game is on hold, we had a player missing Saturday. Started writing up Deathwtach scenarios.

I'm playing party leader in the 4e game tonight, that should be interesting
@Copas what about you?

Which leader class are you playing?

5:01 PM
oh, I'm playing a cleric (and have been for months) but I'm taking a party leadership (player and character) role tonight, with some other guys
with 12-16 players you need player leaders to help the game run smoothly

I participated in a large group like that for a little while. Local shop owner found that few people wanted to run a public D&D game, so he took up the mantle.
Started with six, grew every week until we hit about 14.
Any time the party had to make a decision it became a 45 minute debate.

that's why we have party leaders
to keep things moving, and remind the party "This is not a democracy"

The part I did like about the group was the broad age range. Veterans who had played 2nd ed brought their kids along who found 4E easy to to learn. kids ranging from ages 8 to 14.

Wow
we're definitely a 16-35 group

I had to restrain myself a bit, I'm used to playing rogues with a bit of a crude tongue.

5:06 PM
I can imagine

But the group became such a chore to manage, and there were two people claiming the lead. No unified direction = problems.

yes, that causes problems

The GM wanted to split up the group into two with the clever idea of "This is a big mountain, we should split up into two groups" and change the campaign so actions from one game affected the other, as the games ran at the same time and the GMs would break every hour to exchange notes.

also combat can take a very long time with such large groups

however the week we were to start that, about a third of the overall group didn't show, and we never got back on track getting it started back up

5:09 PM
I presume that didn't work out well?

@C. Ross - you are playing 4th edition D&D with upwards of 16 people?

Well, the lead GM also runs the store, has a wife and four kids, a day job working for an industrial valve company, and the occasional side job as an electrician. Oh, and fistfuls of religious obligations sprinkled here and there.
How he has the time for this is beyond me.

indeed
@PatLudwig Yes I am

I can hardly imagine that. My group got up to 7 at one point and it was far too crazy

and it's been ... relatively smooth
well, as I mentioned we have party leaders
we also use "combat groups", a sort of "fire team" concept where we divide up into groups that go on the same initiative

5:16 PM
I can see where that is necessary, I can't see it working with my current group though
How big are your encounters?
You aren't going to fit in a 20x30 room with a few antechambers :)

Yeah, you're more on the scale of small unit tactics.
Warlords should be having a /field day/ with those group sizes.

Actually we do sometimes have scales that size, but most of our combats are outdoors

Good point. Do you limit the number of friendlies that can benefit from a single buff?

And yes, the warlord enjoys his role

I know that is called out somewhere in the rules, don't remember where

5:18 PM
I don't think there are a ton of powers that affect every ally in a large AOE

no, we don't limit buffs, but until recently we were heavily slanted toward strikers/controllers
This guy gets most of the credit though

Very cool, do y'all have any session posts or anything up anywhere for the rest of us to look at and admire?

yes ... I don't think I can get to the google group from here though ... I'll look it up and post it in here later

thanks, I'd love to see it. I had thought that many folks playing 4th edition wasn't possible.
I had a group of up to 18 playing 2nd edition back in college. But times were different then :)

We had some 8-9 player games in college, but that was about the feasible limit ... too much drama

5:24 PM
4E is good. I won't argue 3.5E vs. 4E, but I tend to think of them as two entirely different games with a similar theme. 4E is very good at what it does, which is providing a relatively simple to learn system with varied combat mechanics that encourages working as a team.
4E is very good at getting new people to sit at a table and learn about roleplaying, at least in this region.

No argument there. I was pretty much done with 3.5 when 4th came along. It got too complex for me at levels 10+, especially as a DM. 4th provided a nice change of pace
My group has always enjoyed the tactical aspects of combat and 4th edition feeds into that very well.

I keep 3.5 around for games with veterans. Games that focus more on a story element than combat are easier for me as a DM in that than 4E.
4E skill challenges are an interesting way of going about things, but I've read their examples to imply that you can replace actual roleplay with a dice roll in some situations.

Everyone seems to flail around with skill challenges. The idea is nice, but the ideal implementation hasn't arrived yet IMHO
My guys have tended to go along with what you said. IE - Which skills can I use? I roll athletics, got a 28. Is that good?
that isn't very satisfying :)

The flow for me is "Here's your non-combat scenario. Here are the things you can see, the logical assumptions you can draw from that, and any outstanding features of the area." Let the players stew around for a little bit, and wait for them to actually pipe up, "I want to try X." and then we throw some dice.
Oh hey I can edit in chat!

lol...cool

5:32 PM
In D&D my players know there is some wiggle room for failure results. If they're at full HP they can take a trap or two. In Dark Heresy they're always acting like there's a gun to their head.... Which is usually true.

I haven't played Dark Heresy, but my group gets a little paranoid when I'm running. For whatever reason, I kill PC's with regularity. The other DM has got us up to level 14 without any PC deaths

My question on TPKs had some good insight to that. If your characters are low level, people are more willing to deal with character death. If you've been at this a long time and have seriously invested in the character, they want to keep them alive at all costs.

/me is going looking for that question

Q: Total Party Kill - What do I do as a GM?

MadMAxJrYour party has had a streak of bad luck and/or made a poor choice and are now staring down death. The rules were followed to the letter and loss is assured. How do you handle this as a GM? Does story trump rules? If you give them a means to pull out of the situation it could lead to the party...

That one.

yup yup..killed two last week in the new tomb of horrors. I had them auto-raised after a short death. The rest of the party saw a brief gleam of red in their eyes as the dead folks stood back up.
Now they're paranoid....which I like :-D

5:39 PM
Well, TOMB OF HORRORS
The original "You could die at any time" campaign.
I seem to recall the original 2nd ed one had a random encounter chart based on the inhabitants, not party level.
Which included a wandering wraith.
Back when level drain meant something!

They found some wraiths last week that had an aura (range 3, if you start your turn in it, you are dazed) .. those turned out to be really BRUTAL
The 4th edition ToH doesn't have that auto-death lurking around every corner, but it does bring the pain

It's a shame, I hear the people in the DM rewards program got a copy of the Tomb of Horrors 4E, updated from the original 2E.
Wish I played more. :P
Off for a quick lunch. Back in an hour.

Q: What do you think about "A Grimoire of Magic Item Curses and Boons"?

yhw42I posted a community wiki question yesterday "A Grimoire of Magic Item Curses and Boons". There were several objections raised in the comments: It wasn't really a question. It was asking for user created content. It was outside the scope of this website. It seems like a number of folk have be...

7:14 PM
And back.

welcome

It's a slow workweek.

how come?

Boss is on vacation, aaaaand we didn't exactly get a list of work items.

ahh

7:27 PM
So we're sort of watching the fort, making sure the lights blink as expected.

You don't have any on-going projects?
those are great times to get code done, when no one is bothering you

Oh we do have those.
However, the development version of the database they read from was left in tatters before the boss left. He's also the DBA.

ah
small shop

University, no centralized IT.
Every department has their own attached IT staff of 2-3 people.

7:43 PM
weird
Why will people vote down instead of vote to close? Do that few people have 500 or more rep?

I just used my first close vote. It was a little bit of a mental leap for me I guess

In short: votes (up and down) are about quality; close votes are about appropriateness ... obviously we need to convey that better.

I haven't used many down votes either. I haven't wanted to essentially work to limit discussion.
This group doesn't see a lot of traffic, we can't afford to chase folks away

while I hear what you're saying, if we want to attract traffic, we have to be different ... allowing everything isn't different, it's 4chan
And I think it chases people away less to have their question closed than a bunch of down votes and snarky comments

I haven't used downvotes because I have yet to find a question in my areas of expertise that was poor quality. I try not to judge things outside my domain.

7:54 PM
I understand. Finding the balance is key. I guess what I'm saying is that I didn't want my vote to be the one that potentially turned someone off

I think people react poorly to any kind of negative criticism.

Note - I want other folks to do the vote/close...somewhat unfair of me I guess

lol, obviously other people are not so restrained as y'all

but I wasn't here at the very beginning and didn't want to impose my values without seeing how the group worked

I'm on the threshold of 500. Any day now.

7:56 PM
well, there is 10 more. I forgot to bump that TPK question, it was a good one

@PatLudwig I appreciate that, but you're a figure of the community now ;-)

Q: Looking for suggestions for quick character generation ...

joe.liedtkeI am considering setting up a semi-casual zombie-apocalypse game in which the player's characters will be based on "normal" people. [Rather than heroic characters.] This is not a game that I expect all the characters to make it through. What kind of zombie movie lets all of the main characters li...

well 5 more...I forget that good questions score less than good answers
Thanks @C. Ross - I was starting to realize that
however, I'm not sure I'll ever stray too far from my D&D rules questions

yeah ... I wish there were more of them around

I've got my book shelf turned into neat stacks around my computer desk to re-read stuff and ask questions from archaic and obscure systems.
Soon you'll see questions on Heavy Gear, BESM 3rd ed, and maybe even the original Ninja Burger.

8:00 PM
Ninja Burger the card game? Is it an RPG?

There's two versions of the RPG

ah

The old one that came in little $5 paper books

I've only ever played the card game, which I enjoy

And the 'new' one that looks like it was a serious attempt at an RPG which is less fun.
The old ninja burger was a beer and pretzels RPG
Ninjas have 10 points of honor. Also ten fingers. These are directly related.

8:06 PM
LOL

Ninjas know 20 skills. and nothing else. (this does not stop you from creative descriptions the GM buys, such as horsemanship to drive a car)
Ninjas have two hands and an infinite array of ninja pockets. To pull something from a pocket you roll on a 2d6 table (x,y). To get something back out of your pockets you put in there before, you have to roll doubles.
It's a simple concept. You have a mission. Deliver food.
Do not be seen.
Some players go as far as to interpret this as even the customer must not see you. this is challenging.
Everything about chargen is random. There is a 1 in 6 chance of being a traitor ninja

lol...sounds great. I've never had a playing group that wanted to stretch their wings and try too many (read: more than 1 every 2 years) new systems

I was that way for a long time, but this new group is doing a one off game every month
Dread (Jenga) last week, which was really cool

Ninja Burger 1st ed had the advantage it was designed so that being less than sober wouldn't greatly impact your rules knowledge.

yeah, D&D doesn't work so well that way

8:16 PM
Though once you hit the point you can't do simple addition anymore, you're off my table and over to the couch... with a bucket.

personally drinking that much ceases to be fun

I try to keep an eye out for it.
And drinking at my table is rare. Like holiday rare

8:52 PM
Hi @MarkBiek Welcome to chat
well, I'm getting out of here and going to play a little D&D
night y'all

have fun.
always think twice before burning the daily powers.

9:22 PM
A player in my group is of the opinion that dailies should be burned early and often
she ends up using a lot more dailies :)

There is the use-it-or-lose-it mentality.

It works for her. She also likes creating new characters.
There is some correlation between the two concepts for her ;)
