5:01 PM
Reddit is discussing about SO closing questions.

@Sathya is your last name Bhat and did you send me something? A yes or no is sufficient.

@jcolebrand yep that be me.

@Sathya aye, ack.
holy crap! I tweeted a link to this Q a few minutes ago, and someone answered it! Totally random!

@jcolebrand #SQLHelp is pretty awesome.

Now I feel bad about tweeting that one randomly with the #SqlHelp hashtag, but I did want to experiment with it.
And that question had been languising, and I was kind of curious what the answer was....

5:17 PM
wishes #OracleHelp had a similar response

lol
so come ask it on our dba site and see what you get.

yeah, will do we I come across such a question next time :)
off to sleep, 'nite all

night

btw, @jcolebrand Oracle Overflow is Stack Exchange 1.0 site

@Sathya oh, I know.
They've got an OSQA, an SE1.0, ... alas
What are you gonna do?

5:23 PM
:)

See me + SqlChicken on Twitter ;)

I'm gonna stick to SO & SE :)
@jcolebrand oh but I am :) haven't closed your twitter page ( not following SQLChicken)

haha

My hosting provider just doubled my package.
<3

Indeed Kevin

5:26 PM
Now nothing is stopping me from buying domains I don't need. Hooray.

lol
Except money?
Or do you have a free domain registration service?

$7.99/year hardly registers.
It's less than a lunch.
Sure I own 10 domains.
But who's counting.

Where are you getting 7.99 for? And is that only on .com?

@jcolebrand I have no idea if this is what you were looking for, but I just stumbled across it while looking up something unrelated: herongyang.com/WSDL/PHP-SOAP-Extension-in-PHP-531.html

Yeah I looked at that
I finally cobbled something together, that I'm pretty sure is wrong, but it works for what I need.
So until someone else besides me screams that it's horribly wrong, I'll just suffer it to be the way it is now.
/afk

5:31 PM
@jcolebrand Eh, I have no idea what's 7.99. Netfirms. .com is 9.99.
I decided to get mootinator.com finally, having witnessed the @drachenstern saga ;)
I never intended to stick with this e-identity it just worked out that way.

5:48 PM
I buy too many domains, never do anything with any of them.
I remember to renew the stupid ones, forget to renew the important one (fosco.com), fail to ever utilize anything.. blah!

does not recognize himself in that message

5:59 PM
Rovio!
(What? It's been too long.)

Reminds me of the old tavern, when Oys were starred and rchern had time for us

@MichaelMrozek It sounds like you're talking about The Tavern, stage 2. I remember the old tavern, when Diago and Shog were around and we didn't have to deal with riff-raff like Mrozek.

@PopularDemand I think I was always around. I missed the original couple-day beta I suppose

Sometimes I think I miss you guys... then I realize I just need to visit the mens room.

6:12 PM
@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I was just taking a gratuitious dig at you. I thought you approved of that sort of thing.

@PopularDemand Not if you're going to fabricate stories about my absence; I stand by the truth. Like that time rchern lit drachenstern on fire with her mind

chirp

@Crickets Nice novelty account.

Ugh, a cricket infestation, again? We need to get some of those twitter bluebirds in here, they'd fix that up right quick.

Our secretary's ringtone is an incredibly loud cricket. I'm going to destroy the phone and whoever made the ringtone

6:46 PM
@mootinator ha!

Q: PHP largest whole number from sum of unsorted array

MattCan someone tell me the best way to find the largest whole number summed from an unsorted array? e.g. {0.1, 0.2, 0.9, 0.5} Largest whole number possible is 1 (0.1 + 0.9). {0.9, 0.2, 0.5, 0.3, 0.9} Largest possible is 2 (0.9 + 0.9 + 0.2) thanks

@MichaelMrozek sounds like a quite reasonable plan

so far 2 totally wrong answers, 1 deleted already... all for a ridiculous scenario that I can't possibly figure out a reasonable context for.

@Fosco The tag is such a ghetto. One of my friends is a professional PHP developer, so most of his answers are in there; he's constantly sending me examples of horrible answers

@Fosco that is an incredibly obtuse problem. It needs to be done the old fashioned way. Work out a general algo on paper, then move it into the computer.

6:49 PM
@MichaelMrozek I know... it's my top tag on SO. I make a rep killing :)

I stay in and , where people call me stupid instead of the other way around

@jcolebrand Exactly... manually. He hasn't even tried anything, just posts on SO. It should actually be closed as plz send teh codes.

Oh I wish that were a close option :p

Is it wrong of me to vote to close "suggest me a program, preferably free, that does X" posts?

@PopularDemand not at all.
we don't do shopping reqs

6:52 PM
@PopularDemand I do it all the time, and I'm never not often wrong.

I feel like nobody else ever gets on board when I cast such votes. Even mods.

well, idk, is it for a dev tool? like: What dev tool does this exact set of functionality? and then they list the program specs of sed or awk?

damnit how do I do strikeout

@Fosco Three hyphens on each side.

@PopularDemand run 'em by us. For a long list do it in the regulator headquarters and drop a link to that room in here

6:53 PM
@PopularDemand Thanks.

@jcolebrand It's not usually that detailed. They usually have two-three fairly broad requirements.

this belongs in the sandbox
@jcolebrand - Got your PHP set up?

7:22 PM
Yar

good
@jcolebrand Is this condoning a voting ring? ;-)

@Moshe no.
It's asking if consensus exists amongst intelligent people who know how the system works.
Just because someone posts in there doesn't mean I feel the need to vote on it

Well, that sure didn't work out. I just flicked ash across my keyboard and behind the tower.

nice ... err, not nice.

@GeorgeMarian Gotta catch 'em all.

7:33 PM
It would've been nice if it was intentional. It went a bit of a distance. LOL

Oh... ash, not Ash.
:-)

I gotta not be lazy and ash my cigar before I re-cut it.

Q: When a sentence starts with e.g., should the e be capitalized?

jcolebrandWhen a sentence starts with e.g., should the e be capitalized? Neverminding that it might be better to start with "For example," ... Thinking of SE posts and comments, should the starting e be capitalized?

Well, Steam ruined my account with a dumb promotion, going to find a free game to play.

@jcolebrand Yes. :)

7:37 PM
@GeorgeMarian so says the other two answerers ;)

Yeah, I noticed.
LOL WTF? "I boobed during the job interview...?"

> You can accept an answer in 1 second

@jcolebrand GO GO GO

@TimStone where be you?

7:48 PM
Answering emails, what's up?

skype is up
how goes that conference?
or was philly a one-day trip?

Oh, I was just up at my university for a few hours yesterday. They gave me free stuff because I had given them money. Good times.

@TimStone That really sounds more like you paid for some non-free stuff.

Well, I wasn't anticipating getting anything, so it's free enough.

It wasn't a bill they gave you was it?

7:53 PM
So you gave them money expecting nothing?
You should do that to me too; who knows what marvelous goods you might receive

I got all sorts of university-branded stuff. Including a tape measure. I'm a little unclear who made the call on slapping the logo on that.
@MichaelMrozek The great gift of not being set on fire via someone's mind?

@TimStone Only if you pay enough

Q: Edited by user syntax breaks ability to navigate to question

Mark KoopmanA user has edited the question How to find basic, uninflected word for searching? and because of the nifty way in which the "edited by" annotation was placed, I can no longer click on and open the question. See screenshot below. I can't click the question text because of the styling of the ...

I think this chap is misinfluenced?
in Node.js on Stack Overflow Chat, 46 secs ago, by JasonWoof
If I'm going to spend years habituating to a program, I want to know that it can't dissapear or break or change in some way that drives me mad because of some financial or political bs

Yeah, I'm pretty sure proprietary software doesn't work that way. Unless license servers are involved, but that's uncommon

I just know that stuff changes all the time. Look at KDE4...

All software changes, but you're generally not forced to upgrade

depends

9:03 PM
Anyone ever seen HTML include statements with syntax ~inc:filename.inc~?

O_o

haven't we all invented one or the other templating language?

only on server side includes style
@balpha no

@balpha Never with tildes :P

@jcolebrand you've never had a string "<a href='$$LINK$$'>click here</a>" and later called .Replace("$$LINK$$", myLink) on it?

9:06 PM
@balpha no. That would be dumb.
I have used jQuery templates
or C#/asp.net stuff
but never written my own
I don't like to reinvent the wheel :p
what are you doing that you're doing that balpha?

right now? nothing. although there are a few instances in SO code, e.g. places where some placeholder get replaced with the actual site name, for example

@MichaelMrozek - Just downloaded URT onto my Mac. When you want, let me know your username (handle) and we can play.

And .NET's string.format, Python's percent notation etc. really aren't any different

In case anyone's curious why I asked: it's used in this question.

wait, a single # is formatting on markdown?
@balpha yeah, but I tend to just use those or assign directly :p

9:18 PM
Yeah, for headings

@MichaelMrozek more specifically, I only had to use one
I thought it had to be # Header 1 #

The trailing one is optional

@jcolebrand ...

I was not aware of that

I'm painfully aware of the need for only one, from all the python programmers who don't feel the need to four-space-indent their comments

9:20 PM
here I've been relying on ====

Q: What is the "reciprocity" of StackOverflow.com?

MosheDuring yesterday's podcast, Joel mentioned the reciprocity ratio and also said that the sweet spot for successful sites is 14%. I'm curious to know what the rate is for StackOverflow itself. Can we pleas get this number published for each site?

Thoughts?
@Chacha102 Find a better one.
Ok, post a comment or an answer?

@Moshe Reciprocity is an annoying word
@Moshe pie

I think he meant that pie is better than reciprocity ;) ... pie is better than most things. I like banana cream.
I want to know what that number means
14% of what was that exactly now?

mutual upvotes?
shrug

I enjoy pie :)

9:53 PM
@jcolebrand The ratio of people who answer and ask regularly.
In the podcast.
the beginning, looking for it.

I'm so glad today is get bent Wednesday.
ahh

@Moshe it doesn't matter. Apparently only you and Joel know it.

So they could be being jerks to people while answering questions then turning around and begging for help.
And that would be considered "reciprocity".

@mootinator No, no, no. Let me get some context
@jcolebrand Lol, one sec.

lol

9:56 PM
@Moshe go delete your comment :p

@jcolebrand done.

Go kill an hour:
John Titor is the name used on several bulletin boards during 2000 and 2001 by a poster claiming to be a time traveler from the year 2036. In these posts he made numerous predictions (a number of them vague, some quite specific) about events in the near future, starting with events in 2004. However, as of 2011, these events appear not to have taken place; he described a drastically changed future in which the United States had broken into five smaller regions, the environment and infrastructure had been devastated by a nuclear attack, and most other world powers had been destroyed. ...

@jcolebrand I was trying to remember his name a few days ago

How odd then eh?

got it!

My client's strategy for training new people: Pick a random method of data entry which makes sense to them at the time, and complain to me when it doesn't work.

> "What percentage of people only ask, only answer, vs doing both?"
> The one's who do both are called "reciprocals".

If I had anything to do with the software they were entering data into, that might be my problem.

@Moshe I would rather not personally
@mootinator bonus!

@jcolebrand np, got a quote from the podcast. See updated question.

also edit in your comment about it being a cool stats for A51
also, my comment is staying if it's my vote that counts. I still think it would be nice of them to define it

10:04 PM
@jcolebrand Add that to the Q?

Aye. "I tink this would be cool on A51"

Someone needs to make a so chat client which isn't balls on wp7 ^_^.

@jcolebrand - Done.
@mootinator Or, someone needs to make a Linux Distro for WP7?

@Moshe Nyaaah

(Linux was always the answer when Windows broke for me.)

@jcolebrand Cool, know any of those folks?

@Moshe aye, the TwinEngine boys
got 'em on my facebook no less.

Cool!

I'll start developing for iOS once the next big thing comes along.

@mootinator Do you have an iThing or a MacThing?

10:12 PM
There's an iThing in the wife's office.

Oh, that works.

And a iPod Touch, even.

Ok, you're all set.

10:32 PM
ok, time to contemplate: Everyone else has left for the day. Should I as well? I've only got about thirty minutes of work and I can knock that out at the house.

Yes.

11:32 PM
Here ya go @Moshe
