@1999 inequalities systems with more than a variable can not be solved with anything but graphing?

user259867
@Braiam Depends. There is always a remote possibility of finding a structure that makes it all nice. Generally, one doesn't want to solve systems of inequalities as much as optimize something subject to that system.

user259867
Can you give a concrete example?

teacher asked us to investigate if inequation systems can be solved with the analytic method, I suspected he was sending us to a dead end and decided to confirm with you since I found nothing about it

user259867
7:11 PM
As I said, depends. If it's x1+x2 >0 and 3x1-x2<10, I can solve that analytically.

but, example can be {y<2x+4, x>=-2, y<=1}
yeah, but that one is easy, I was thinking of more than one variable

user259867
That's also nice, linear. But now a question: what does it mean to "solve" this? What is the form of the expected output?

user259867
You already have the set of solutions described in a reasonable way: all pairs (x,y) such that y<2x+4, x>=-2, and y<=1.

finding the possible values of x and y where the system is true

user259867
There are infinitely many of those, they fill a region of a plane or of a space. How to describe them?

7:15 PM
x<a and y>b for example
but I'm thinking that's not possible

[ SmokeDetector ] Repeating characters in body: Best way to get results for mysql by chase cabrera on stackoverflow.com

user259867
Say, you have n linear inequalities with m variables. They describe a convex polytope. If you find all of its vertices v_1,...v_N then the general form of solution is a convex combination of these: i.e., sum (c_1 v_1 + ... c_N v_N) where c_k are nonnegative numbers adding up to 1.

user259867
I think this may qualify as analytic solution. The problem of finding vertices of a polytope that is presented by a system of inequalities is called the vertex enumeration problem

user259867
The brute force approach (sensible for small n,m) is to (i) choose m inequalities out of your n; (ii) turn them into equalities and solve; the solution is just a point; (iii) check if the solution satisfies all inequalities you haven't used. If it does, it's a vertex.

user259867
This takes a while because there are (n choose m) possibilities, not all of which yield vertices in general.

user259867
That... wasn't an intended effect of my monologue.

well, I will stick to graphing, thanks

user259867
7:32 PM
Say you have {y<= 2x+4, x>=-2, y<=1}, that's 3 inequalities for 2 variables. Pick any 2 of them, turn into equalities and solve. E.g., the first two: y=2x+4, x=-2 give (-2,0). Notice this also satisfies the remaining inequality, so it's a vertex.

I was thinking on that too

user259867
And what I wrote above is nothing but a general form of that.

you scared me after "polytope"

user259867
It's like polygon but possibly in higher dimensions, that's all. Cubes, etc.

user259867

7:39 PM
so, to find the all the vertexs I just have to do that for all inequations on a system?
