@ASCIIThenANSI How do you make Unicode? That's the super craziest question I have heard in my life, considering that you asked it IN UNICODE!!!!! But want, random ones? Again trivial: you pick an integer between 0 and 0x10_FFFF inclusive, discard the surrogates and the non-characters, call it a code point — and a night.
Next brainbusting programming question please?

or you just don’t discard non-characters, and fill SE chat with invalid codepoints →𑄑←

@Roombatron5000 :p

@tchrist which of your tools takes unicode input and says what it is?

@yellowantphil THAT IS NOT A NON-CHARACTER. IT IS ALSO NOT AN INVALID CODE POINT!!!!

ok I was lucky

2:02 AM
unicode is tearing the tavern apart

0x11111 didn’t seem likely to me

U+11111 is a perfectly value code point. It is currently unassigned.
Likely does not matter.
It is valid.

𢈢𳌳𢈢𳌳
񄑄
→ ←
surely that last one is bad news?

U+03_3333 is currently Unassigned and perfectly valid. The other two have the property Han and are in the CJK_Unified_Ideographs_Extension_B block.
@yellowantphil Which one?
What is the number?

U+200000
I think SE stripped it out

2:06 AM
That is not Unicode.

out of range for UTF-16 but that doesn’t stop me from abusing UTF-8

Tell me about it.

vim lets me type it, but I can’t seem to copy and paste it
tyranny!!!!!!

% perl -CS -e 'print chr(0xFFFF_FFFF_FFFF_FFFF)' | wc -c
13
Works fine in perl.

also, vim has a bug where if you try to type a character that won’t fit in UTF-8, it shows some ASCII of something else

2:08 AM
vim is not especially clever sometimes.

I told Mr. Vim about the bug and he did nothing
ctrl-shift+u 200000
works fine, but higher it stops working, past the theoretical max of UTF-8

Well.
All UTF-{8,16,32} have the same max legal value of U+10_FFFF.
However,
You can extend the UTF-8 algorithm rather further.

I am a scofflaw

There are proposals for infinitely extended versions of all three.

you can extend UTF-8 into the stratosphere if you’re willing to use bytes FE and FF
@tchrist are all of those proposals from William Overington?

2:12 AM
0xDEFACED
@yellowantphil I don't think so, but I cannot find them now.

if they’re formal proposals, it’s not Overington

No, they are not.

do you read the Unicode mailing list?

Yes.

do you know who Overington is?

2:14 AM
Not especially.

I think he’s one of the people who wanted an entire plane

His name doesn't ring bells, and many there do.

for localizable sentences, or base-16383 numbers, or something
he’s often unintentionally funny

localizable sentences aren't, really, about, Unicode.

but everything can be in codepoints! EVERYTHING!!!!!

2:18 AM
bits

I posted to that list once, if you happen to remember every message ever on the list

You meant bit everything.

I think I was replying to Overington, actually

I would only remember it if had begun a great craziness.

he wanted a technology that allowed colors in fonts
I replied and told him about Postscript type 3
he continued talking about this hypothetical, wonderful technology

2:19 AM
blackmoji

no one has ever figured out how to put colors in fonts. Ever. Never mind PostScript type 3 and SVG fonts
he doesn’t often make sense

Bits dream only colorless green overflows.

too much unicode makes the other taverners run away

2:25 AM
I hack SE to transmit my text as Windows-1252
rearranged as if it were EBCDIC

Which EBCDIC?

all of them

There are so many.

I use the Windows-1252 version of EBCDIC
Windows-1252 is sort of nice in that it fits almost every character I used to type into one byte
that went out the window after I started typing cats 🐱

It is not ISO.
It fakes it.
It is evil.

2:27 AM
no more evil than anything else from MS

Evil.
Evil is evil.
All evil.

what about CP437?
my favorite encoding
I only like Unicode because it contains the entirety of CP437

There it none good amongst them, no not one.
They are all deprecated legacy miscodings.

I spent ages typing in mazes in the DOS editor using CP437
alt+179 gives a vertical bar
I typed that one a billion times

Rogue draws its own maze.

2:30 AM
I had no Rogue. Just me and EDIT

How can you ever type in vi without having played a few years of classic video games like Rogue? You will never reach enlightenment.

I could not type in vi at 6 years old
I’ve played some nethack but I die way too much

Nor could I, for Bill had not written it yet.
nethack counts.
larn.
srogue
All hone your editing skills until you are one with the file and there is no editing only desire.

I learned vi from a book on UNIX that my dad has

Yay Nethack is best game \o/

2:33 AM
it said it was the only editor that you could guarantee would be installed, besides stuff like ed

And Vim is the best text editor, of course

of course

How ironic. I taught my mom vi for her second semester of assembly language.

that animal thing just blinked at me

Dennis has some quote about rogue wasting more cycles than everything else put together.
Sure it did, sure it did.
By about 40 hours without sleep, everything winks at you.

hmm, vi as a rouge variant
by 40 hours without sleep, I would die

Q: Moderators Pro Tempore, on a sturdy tray covered by plastic bowls

Shog9Throughout the beta, we need members from the site whose focus is to engage the community, both in community-building issues and site management. That's why we select a few members from each community to act as temporary, provisional Moderators. You can read about the program here: Moderators Pro...

That seems like an unhealthy job.

That's so two hours ago.

@yellowantphil That's possible, but probably not.

@user147263 Congrats @michaelpri!

I’m not going to test it

I would not recommend it.
Speaking from experience.

I had a hard limit of 26 hours awake in college
it’s probably lower now

Every week I had at least one double-all-nighter from grades 16–18, and several all nighters.
Two doubles in a week hurt.

2:38 AM
I did 26 hours awake, 2 asleep for 3 or 4 days in a row, and I was fine ← did that only once
woke up without an alarm each time

Metric time is better: 100 metric seconds per metric minutes, 100 metric minutes per metric hour, 100 metric decihours per solar metric day.

I am skeptical

It is superior.
It is metric.
Bow before it.

who’s afraid of base 60?

2:51 AM
How many Babylonians do you know?

You probably think there is half a circle between the freezing and boiling points of water, too.

I don’t know anything about circles of freezing water

Oh wait, there is.
Never mind.
The great thing about metric time is that they'll raise all the highway speeds to 180 mph.

@Roombatron5000 Thanks :)

2:53 AM
Think of how much happier people will be.

can we just raise highway speeds without metric time?

And there will be a lot of new jobs putting up the signs.
And clocks, the clocks will be marvelous pentagrams traversed twice for 10 metric hours per day, in clockwise order of course.

let’s just switch everything to base 60
it gives more space between the metric prefixes. finding new ones is getting difficult
what am I supposed to do when I have a 1000-yottabyte hard disk?

1am and 1pm will both be at 72 degrees, 2am and 2pm will be at 216 degree, 3am and 3pm will be at 0 degrees where it belongs, 4am and 4pm will be at 144 degrees, and 5am and 5pm will be at 288 degrees.

@yellowantphil I was converting to your system so can understand it. I can give you old clock hours instead if you would like.
The coolest thing about pentgram clocks is the way they lift up through the z-axis from one hour to jump 144 degrees of the circle across the zenith to the next hour.
For obvious reason, the metric minute hands and metric second hands make other arrangements from the metric hour hands.
It will be much easier to tell time this way.
Clock arithmetic is trivial.
And dividing the circle into only 5 hours twice will make it much easier for people to tell what time it is from a distance.
12 is too hard. The angle is too small.

I guess you don’t like digital clocks

3:02 AM
What ever gave you that idea? :)

I just have my phone say what time it is every 15 minutes
when I’m at home

No one over the age of 10 wears a stupid digital watch. Analogue readout is so far above digital readout it is a joke.
