@Rejoicerejoicekbdisback there is one
well-hidden :)

Ah ha, right. Very sneaky. :P

@balpha yeah :) I meant more as a "preview" button in the chat overview itself, but I guess once you're used to it, the transcript route works.

the "chat overview"?

The overview page
@balpha oh, by the way. You guys forgot to implement <kbd></kbd>
Ovbviously an oversight that will be corrected in the next release. Right?

9:12 AM
@balpha Aaaah! Sneaky. Nice!

unfortunately, this completes one of your feature requests, and you only get one. so no <kbd>

@balpha Nah, it was already implemented. Doesn't count.

no, I did that just now. yes I did. yes I did.

Damn chat and its transient nature! There is no way to prove this the atrocious lie it is.

@Rejoicerejoicekbdisback Forest of Dean; border of England and Wales. Nice area.
@Benjol yes; it is smaller than I expected
but when you're only a few inches from the ground, it gets hard to gauge scale

9:17 AM
@Marc nice! Right inside the forest?

not right among the trees, no. But that is but a walk away. I'm on the edge of a town in the forest.

@Marc nice! I never understood why J.K.Rowling had to make up place names for Harry Potter. You guys have such crazy real place names! Gorsty Knoll.... Milkwall... Ready Penny...
.... English Bicknor :)

@Benjol ahahahaha! AMERSHAM - The sneeze which tickles but never comes

My favourite: WOKING (participial vb.)
Standing in the kitchen wondering what you came in here for.

9:29 AM
Used up all my phone battery playing Angry Birds.

9:41 AM
@Rejoicerejoicekbdisback actually, she's from near here (she grew up in Chepstow); the RFoD is mentioned a few times

10:01 AM
@Marc ahh, of course! That's why I was thinking about Harry Potter - they hide there in the last book.

1 hour later…
11:05 AM
I blame balpha

not my fault

12:05 PM
checking disk 1 of 1 (46pct. complete)
sigh.
although I'm not sighing about that
I'm sighing about the lack of common spaces in university
I wasted one hour checking different places, but they all gave a very real sense of stack overflow

go home?

so I had to resort to the last two rows of a smelly, sweaty classroom, hoping the teachers don't mind.
benjol, home is 1.5 hrs away, I have a meeting here in one hour.
...a meeting in one of the common spaces. fml

@radp, ok, my commiserations then. that's a heck of a long way, do you go every day?

@Benjol every day I have 2+ hours of meaningful stuff to do.
(yay a real keyboard!)

I understand why italian degrees take so long then, at 2h/day ;)

12:13 PM
@Benjol by that I meant, some days I have exactly two hours of lesson
if it isn't something more than public reading of slides I'll gladly stay home
say, this friday I have a lab 10-12. What should I do?
a) wake up at 0630, take bus at 0830, arrive at 0845, take train at 0902, arrive at 0948, walk 1km, arrive at 1000, wait for lab to start at 1030, take lab till 1200, walk one km hurrily, take train home 1218, arrive 1301, take bus home at 1330~, arrive home at 1345,
b) wake up at 0630, take bus at 0830, arrive at 0845, take train at 0902, arrive at 0948, walk 1km, arrive at 1000, wait for lab to start at 1030, take lab till 1200, walk one km hurrily, take train home 1218, arrive 1301, fuck the bus and walk all the way home and arrive 1
Choices, choices.

@radp In that particular case, the choice is fairly easy ;)
I'm sitting here looking at some code that I was convinced couldn't possibly work, but when I ran it, it did. I had underestimated the deviousness of the person who created the code. Wondering if it might have been me

or, you're looking at dead code.

Worse than that, it's code in an event handler, which indirectly re-raises the event, so you've got (probably involuntary) 're-entrance'...
if(condition)
  A();
else
  B();
A() changes the condition, and reraises the event, which calls B()

12:49 PM
-1, B() doesn't call A() back.

1:01 PM
Just as well :)

Wow it's quiet in here today. I guess a lot of people are traveling for the US Thanksgiving holiday?

@TheUnhandledException It's not unusual for it to be quiet before 10 am US Eastern.

Really? I though it started picking up around 9. Oh well.

@TheUnhandledException Some days it never picks up at all.

9 is when we are supposed to be in work
10 is when we get ther
11 is when we start working
:)

with working == powering on the XBOX

2:50 PM
Yeah I don't get in till 9CT ;)

@Zypher What's that third step you have?

I have the day off!

haha @rchern

whatcha doin in here then

2:51 PM
LOL
@rchern WAKE UP!!!!

and why are you here at ~8 Central?

(Sorry, just saw a question earlier where you said you've been browsing MSO in your sleep, wanted to make sure you were awake this time)

I was halfway to work and had to turn around.. my girlfriend locked her keys in her car at work. Called AAA and waited there for a half hour..

That sucks @Fosco

I've been browsing MSO in my sleep?
@Zypher it is 9 now. Had an 8am call with someone. Now working on waking up so that I can drive 4 hours.

2:53 PM
@rchern I think someone yesterday said he or she was dreaming about MSO chat.
Not interested enough to search for it.

That was me, LOL
More like nightmares ;-)

(Sorry, just saw a question earlier where you said you've been browsing MSO in your sleep, wanted to make sure you were awake this time)

Ah that sucks and isn't so bad

^ this doesn't make sense then, when directed at rchern
unless you were talking to yourself

So, I've gotten 2 comments in the last 24 hours that my freehand writing is too neat. ):

2:55 PM
@Fosco I have dreamt about being in chat. But @rchern's profile page actually displays activity when she claims she's sleeping

o:

@TheUnhandledException Ah... well.. bots don't sleep.

LOL

Q: Recent Activity default duration still unusable.

rchernI know this has been posted several times before. Lots of posts about it, and lots of [status-complete]. This image shows a default recent activity duration of 8 minutes and 49 seconds. I had not clicked any page in the SE network for 7ish hours. (unless I sleep-surfed the net.) This i...

> unless I sleep-surfed the net

now it makes sense :)

Oh, right. That reminds me. I've been meaning to change the envelope to link directly to Today

2:57 PM
I think you have been sleep surfing the net ...

I don't like that recent activity thing.. I just want it to link to >today< and that's it.
2

@rchern I know the vague definition of "recent" always bothers me

Unless you're Jon Skeet, not that much happens in a day!

So is this something we can just feature request for the SOIS team? Or are they going to NOT implement that? I have a modification to the request that may make it tenable...

@drachenstern feel free to request. You'll get a bunch of upvotes and probably a
status-declined

3:00 PM
if (exists new notification) { show envelope icon bold; set link to notification specific window; } else { set link to today; }
but I bet that's been suggested before

@drachenstern Well, you can see how much love my post got.

@rchern which one?

@rchern this one?

A: Clicking envelope "recent" different than clicking "today"

Jeff AtwoodBy design. The envelope, by default, uses the last time we "saw" you as the date. This same date is visible on your profile page, under: Seen field Last Activity field equivalent to these values: <add key="Security.LastAccessDateThresholdMins" value="30" /> <add key="Security.LastL...

guessing from jeff's response they won't fix it

3:08 PM
@drachenstern Actually, after my brain made the connection that that was what was going on, I really started to like that system.

OK. Who broke XMPP this time?
Oh. I did. Heh.

@PopularDemand I think it should be tweaked anyways, I don't care for it. I'm justone man and all, but still

@rchern your "Oy" meme is up to +8 :-D
It's beating the Always Friday in Iceland meme and the Pluralization Bug. Congrats
@balpha Oh, great, thanks! Here I was thinking it was my fault

@rchern you need to work on your freehand circles..
2

3:14 PM
@balpha actually, the wheel of blame is right! What broke XMPP was the onebox of @rchern 's answer, so, it was her fault!

ok whose da wiseguy who upvoted the meme and not the oy below it? gotta stay one ahead :p

@drachenstern I know, that's part of the joke :-)

@TheUnhandledException yeah but who didn't upvote the oy but did the meme? they're even 10:10

now to overtake "change your name on a whim" :p

and with the SEScripts it would be fair to be above greasemonkey as well ;)

@drachenstern I am probably partially the cause of the "oy" comment being one ahead because I upvoted the comment but not the answer

@balpha seriously, I leave to load the car and that's when I get blamed? Are you spying on me? ):
@TheUnhandledException oy <_<
@Fosco huh?

3:22 PM
@rchern the wheel doesn't lie

@TheUnhandledException but it's not one ahead any more
> 'Can I use a Swastika as my logo in Call of Duty: Black Ops?'
lolwtf?

@balpha rigged!

ok?

3:24 PM
nevermind..

actually that article hurts my eyes ... gray text on a black background?

@rchern maybe you should get drunk before doing freehand circles? ;-)

lol
I like that unicorn + oy oy oy version of sketchy

That would help them be less uniform and smooth
Also I suggest trying to create them in a moving vehicle, or ask a coworker to shake your desk. These should all improve your upvote ratio

shakes her head

just use your (rchern.IsLeftHanded() ? "right" : "left") hand

Actually, I'm left-handed, but use my right when I do use the mouse.

Really? Huh

hey guys, can you recommend me a really awesome way of writing ER diagrams?
(If everything else fails I'll use raw GraphViz I guess, although that'd get me something... peculiar.)

3:36 PM
@radp Druid

of course that assumes you want a graphical ER tool that's web based

Web based, Windows tool, Linux tool, they're all okay for me
the real nice-to-have feature for me is SVG output
(but it's just that, nice-to-have)
@drachenstern This one looks kinda complicated but capable

oh, well that's a requirement no? that we can use to filter our results?

@drachenstern the requirement is that it doesn't make me want to tear my hair apart

3:42 PM
@PopularDemand Downloaded, trying.
It kinda looks like overkill...
although that's probably a case of RTFM

@radp Yeah, it does other stuff. But I thought it worked out pretty well for me when I needed a quick ER diagram tool.
I downloaded it before 1.0 was out, there wasn't an FM to R at the time. You pick it up pretty quick.

@PopularDemand Is there a way to move stuff around in the generated E/R diagrams?
(Here's guessing Database → E/R views is the way one'd get a E/R diagram)
Um, why does PostgreSQL hate varchars?

@radp Just click and drag, as I recall.

@PopularDemand yeah, my problem was I imported all tables at one time in the same entity

If you need more space, you click and drag or CTRL+click and drag the border.
@radp Ah, importing. No idea how that goes, I started from scratch.

3:55 PM
@PopularDemand no, I also did. When you right click on the empty space there's "Add entity", which gets me a list of tables I want to "import" in the new entity.
Hence my use of "import."

@radp Ah, retracted, then.

Oh well. We were taught a digramming technique for E/R diagrams that is nowhere shown on Google Images when you query "E/R diagram"
I guess they won't complain then if I don't do it that way.

@radp I'm pretty sure SE teachers regularly invent methods when they're bored and teach them to students as though they're widely accepted
2

@radp I was taught three different ways to diagram for E/R only to find out that they have all these different names and such

4:00 PM
attached dots for properties and diamonds for relationships (not pictured). Sorry for the Italian, it's straight from the archived course material (including the pdf comment bubble).

@radp oh that's crap
I've always been a fan of Martin Notation for ER
@radp this looks like a variation on IDEF1X

Martin notation is good.
I'm a fan of whatever the tools I have can make at any given time though.

Hey @Chacha102
How goes?

4:19 PM
hello

@TheUnhandledException Hahah :P

:-)
How are you today @Tim Stone?

Pretty good I suppose, you?

Not too bad. Today's busy as usual but I get tomorrow and Friday off so I like that! :-)
Plus I got Electorate, Necromancer and Nice Answer on MSo, so I'm happy :-D

Good stuff. :D

4:29 PM
@TheUnhandledException That's quite an achievement. There should be a badge for it.

@PopularDemand the sarcasm badge? ;-)
I'd have to wrestle that one from your hands and then fight @Fosco for it :-)

@TheUnhandledException good job

I fall in the sarchasm all the time.

thanks @drachenstern. The last two were for the Oy meme XD

haha, sweet
now you're encouraging me to go think up useful stuff to add to back-catalog CW questions :p
and then pity-beg you all to upvote to +10 :p

4:34 PM
Asking for downvotes is more likely to get you upvotes...

Ah nice, balpha fixed the WMD link text issue, nifty. :)

where are the unicorns?

@Zypher I knew that would come back to bite me.

@Zypher they went home to Thanksgiving
This one's still here:

A: Graduated sites show "sketchy" offline page

The Unhandled ExceptionAs shown in the top of the screen capture, the issue is not so much the image of the page, it's the url the user is redirected to that is wrong. Just a helpful hint for the team :-) EDIT: I added a freehand frowny-face, freehand "oy!"s and, for good measure, a freehand crying unicorn... EDIT2: ...

4:41 PM
excepting of course this one j.mp/f8kY0C NSFW
I'm pretty sure he doesn't go home for thanksgiving :p

Someone stole his horn

Of course @drachenstern has that one bookmarked ;-)

Must be why he's crying.
Through his junk.

@TheUnhandledException nope, somebody mentioned it was on "unicorn crying" on google images, so it was easy to find

4:43 PM
Who could have mentioned such a thing!?!

and since it's on my j.mp page I have no clue how to recognize that that one means "unicorn crying NSFW" so I'll likely as not repeat the same procedure to get the link next time :p
altho for the record 3 uniques have clicked that link ;)
However, I did find this one full of win
user image

You all... are not well.

I did not revise the above image to be more disturbing.

I think we should institute a fact finding committee to finally decide whether unicorns fart or vomit rainbows
It's definitely not both, since I've never seen both in the same picture.
cue in disturbing imagery in 3, 2, 1...

4:52 PM
I wonder if the colors mix together when they run into something, as I have illustrated.
Or do they fart actual beams of light, instead of solid rainbow waste?

there you go

Well F- me... Just got some very bad news

oh ffs

are we still redacting these?

4:59 PM
@drachenstern I am :-)
Was giving @Tim a chance to read
but he was too slow :-)
@drachenstern 120 seconds
Oh well. I doubt anything can happen before 1/1/11 and I should have most of my deadlines completed by then, so maybe I'll be OK. But it sure makes my life more difficult!

@mootinator I just realized you updated this and ... um ... wow

Too much?

a tad
also, you have issues :p

5:14 PM
Uh oh, clearly I missed something.
Damn my desire to be clean!

lmao, that's a funny redact

Redacted.

wow, just wow
so I think the fact finding mission says that rainbows are now solid, eh?
@TimStone no 'cos :282930 says pretty much everything that :282926 implies

Based on the lego rainbows one has to assume so.

@mootinator one would assume so

5:16 PM
Ah
Minecraft update!

@TimStone seriously, for your own benefit, uninstall that game from your box :p

Hahah :P

lolz has anyone checked out st4X0r ov4rflow? bit.ly/st4x0r ... not much difference though :->

@TimStone sorry I stepped AFK

Well, clearly I had as well. ;)
So I imagine it's OK :P

5:23 PM
@herzmeisterderwelten what does it make different? Reads at about the same grammatical level :p

thats what i meant ;-)

That was pretty much all you missed @Tim

Ah, damn. :/

So now taking suggestions for new areas in the US to move to! :-D

@TheUnhandledException of course where I am! ;)

5:26 PM
I'm a fan of this general area myself, but :P

I'm probably going to stay local because I love this area, but what's rent like where you are @Tim?
I want to say you're in Pennsylvania but I know that's not right, that's @Fosco

Snow tomorrow maybe crosses fingers

Hm, something in the realm of $400-$600 a month I think.

LOL. Hoping for yes or no @Aiden?

Big yes

5:29 PM
@TimStone not bad!

/me gets back from lunch
Looks like I missed quite a bit.

@Fosco Have you been following my latest plight?

@TimStone it's about that down here too, for something in the moderate area. I'm personally a fan of paying for a tad more, so for renting, I'm about $750 right now

@TheUnhandledException I live somewhere between you and Canada. (Have to keep rchern guessing) ;)

@TimStone - Christ that rent is low!

5:30 PM
@TimStone Maybe I'll just go all the way north, LOL
Does jQuery work in Canada??
6

@TimStone why? It's not like she doesn't already know via mystical-mod powers ;)
@TheUnhandledException lmao

@TheUnhandledException It does, but it executes $('body').append("eh") alot
6

@drachenstern Yeah, I'd probably do the same. My previous apartment was only $400 a month, but it was actually really nice. I had four other room mates taking up both the upstairs and downstairs units though, which helped us negotiate the price.

@AidenBell I'm paying roughly $1100 for a 3 bedroom house

@TheUnhandledException - Yea I am in that region for a 2 bed flat

5:33 PM
(but that's split with a roommate)

@drachenstern This is true, the SO team knows where I live on account of them sending me my t-shirt. :P

@TimStone - what, no StackOverflowDeliveries POBOX?

@TheUnhandledException something with the landlord?

Also, anyone else getting a flickering refresh thing on FF3.6?

@AidenBell Unfortunately not :P
@AidenBell Yeah, stupid Firefox

5:34 PM
@AidenBell sometimes yes

@TheUnhandledException Ah... well thats not so bad...

Lame. How long has that been going on for? I have been in 4beta for a while

@TheUnhandledException My mortgage on my house is only 730.. lol.

@Fosco I should probably buy, yeah

@TheUnhandledException @Fosco - it's the deposit that kills

5:35 PM
and thats a 15 yr mortgage

@AidenBell For a while, I think it gets confused when things are added and removed from the DOM at the same time, heh.

@Fosco The issue is timing. I am booked so solid for at least a month :-(

@TheUnhandledException Does your partner know about your plight?.. can't he help in some way?

That's part of the issue @Fosco -- it's because of my business that we're in such a tight crunch. Both my business partner and I agree we need to get these new features done for January
Such is the downside to owning your own business, sometimes it's a luxury but sometimes it's more demanding than being an employee

5:39 PM
=\ you'll figure it out..

@Fosco I'm sure I will. I just enjoy bitching to complete (and partial) strangers on the internet :-)
I'm sure I can stave off any catastrophe for at least 30 days if not 90, which gives me time. It's just an unpleasant situation is all. I dislike unpleasant situations!

hehe.. really?.. I love them!

I love turning them around :-D

I'm in one today, with my gf, and it's just a super-happy-fun-fest.

@TheUnhandledException feel free to. We'll occasionally do the same to you

5:44 PM
@Fosco Oh, wonderful. Best of luck!
@drachenstern Sounds great! This is where we have our fill of bread and wine, and then tell of tales of other times we've had our fill of bread and wine after all.

@TimStone is a "local celebrity" where I live.

Is he now?

@mootinator Have you taken up residence in this tavern? :-)

@TheUnhandledException Hehe, no not actually our Tim Stone but someone of the same name.

5:53 PM
There's probably a lot of Tim Stones :-)

Indeed, there are a fair number of people with my name. :)

I go to make lunch and people start talking about me or people named like me... shakes head

I sat with the mother of one of them at a dinner theatre once, even.
I think the organizers assumed we were together.

I'm actually very unsearchable on Google somehow, heh.

wonders if this will turn into a meme based merely on FoxTrot + XKCD ... imgs.xkcd.com/comics/guest_week_bill_amend_foxtrot.png

5:56 PM
@TimStone This is the second time you've been AFK during important events. NEVER LEAVE THIS ROOM AGAIN!
3

@mootinator Wow, that's quite the coincidence
Hahah, yes...I should know better.

Does that make you.... The Blitz?!
