i've been sitting on a feature request for launching the app from the website, but figured it needs to be on the store first. Is the feature already on its way, or should I go ahead and request it (once the announcement is already made of course. don't want to rain on anyone's parade!)

smart app banners are more for advertisements instead of making your own "HEY WE HAVE AN APP" interstitial, I think

I know we can do deep linking from inside Twitter and Facebook, I don't know how it works for just on sites..

Other than you know, the really hacky Javascript ways of doing it

Yup, smart banners do that. You can specify an argument to pass on launch which enables deep linking. So it would be app development to create handle the launch argument and web development to add the smart banner.
