PSA: The flag bot now listens to commands in here, however, they're very very limited. they are stop, restart and listFlagCount. To invoke the bot, do @Quill followed by the command name
EVERYONE in here has the ability to stop the bot, please don't do that unless necessary because I don't want to have to ssh back into my server to start it again

Morning tavern

user315433
@Quill If there is restart, why do you have to ssh to it?

Things are done rendering

@sandwich because stop literally stops the bot with no restart

user315433
Then what does restart do?

12:12 AM
restarts the bot, incase he turns into a psychomaniac and starts devouring cats
I'm sure smokey has that functionality too

user315433
Looks like back in the days, he was an owner of every "main" room. I guess being user #1 in chat.SE has to do with it. chat.stackexchange.com/users/1

yeah... that'd make sense
looks like some testing got out of hand <_<

I don't normally hang out in math chatroom, but at a glance, it appears to have higher quality content than the main site.

T'ain't sayin' much.

because they don't have homework in the chatroom?

user315433
Because it's easier to kick out of chat?

We need a kick functionality on the main site.

there is already one... you just don't have access to it ;)

The Cauchy distribution, named after Augustin Cauchy, is a continuous probability distribution. It is also known, especially among physicists, as the Lorentz distribution (after Hendrik Lorentz), Cauchy–Lorentz distribution, Lorentz(ian) function, or Breit–Wigner distribution. The Cauchy distribution is often used in statistics as the canonical example of a "pathological" distribution since both its mean and its variance are undefined. (But see the section Explanation of undefined moments below.) The Cauchy distribution does not have finite moments of order greater than or equal to one; onl...
This is really interesting.

user202362
what's so interesting about it?

2:50 AM
There are no moments!
It's because of the difference between an integral and a Cauchy Principle Value.
Also, Dirak Delta.
And it's connected to the T distro.

user315433
And to the Brownian motion. Place a particle in the upper half plane and let it wander randomly until it hits the boundary. Its exit position follows the Cauchy distribution.

3:07 AM
Noice.

user202362
Cauchy distribution not normal distribution?

user315433
3:30 AM
Normal distribution is related to Brownian motion too, but in a different way. It arises if one lets a particle move for some fixed amount of time. The position at the end is normally distributed.

user315433
The time of exit from half-plane is itself random (it depends on where the particle is going), and this changes the distribution of its x-coordinate at the time of exit.

I really like the idea of just-in-time help for folks who seem to not be writing in English on the English site (and vice versa -- we actually get English-language questions on the Japanese site from time to time). Close reasons I don't like so much (is this really such a common occurrence that we need a canned reason for it? Especially since I'm sure some well-meaning souls may end up using that to close questions by non-native speakers). — jmac ♦ 2 days ago

@sandwich so cauchy distribution is the distribution of x when Y = y for a random walk in a 2d space, for an example?

@Haney I've added count() and dirxml() methods (repo). I've also added some configuration options requested here, i.e.: allow the console to fill the window, don't autoscroll to the last entry, etc. Here's a demonstation for setting those options: meta.stackexchange.com/a/279495/159427
Presumably, you could just autogenerate that console.config() call (from some new config checkboxes) and insert it in a script immediately following the console include.
I'd rather not require people to call that on their own... it would pollute their snippet source with a magic method.

Hi. Where can I find docs about which users can vote on moderator elections on other gold SE sites?
I tried to look at scifi.stackexchange.com/election/4 and meta.scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/election but I couldn't see this particular information listed.
Wait, let me ask this as a proper question?

gold SE sites?

@b_jonas Not many sites have yellow backgrounds
@b_jonas The info is in the page.

Q: Election privileges missing from privileges page

Jason PlankPreviously, there had been an entry in the privileges list page for "Nominate moderators". While that entry was outdated, it is no longer present, and has not been updated or replaced with another entry in the latest changes to the privileges list. Should there be entries in the privilege list ...

@Quill gold means not beta
I think it's called "graduated" officiall

7:56 AM
@b_jonas So graduated you mean

yes

@b_jonas Well, I don't think anyone doesn't recognize "graduated".

meta.stackexchange.com/q/78888/222298 says anyone with 150 rep on the site can vote

Yes.

Mar 14 at 22:01, by 404
@Quill 150 rep is to vote in election. I'm not going to run anywhere. (300 is required to run).

8:02 AM
@B_J I think I remember that info being on the page you vote.
It's weird that it doesn't exist in the archived election page.

@PhMgBr If you can find a permanently accessible source on some authoritive place for this info, eg. on a help page or an answer by an SE developer, please post it to meta.stackexchange.com/q/279497/222298

@LennartRolland allow me to state the obvious: as an English-speaker you benefit from having everything in English, and lose nothing. You already have over 12 million answered questions to be enlightened by, with 8000 more coming in every day. Do you really think the ~300 questions/day that the international sites are getting will somehow destroy the internet? Do you really think the roughly 900 million speakers of PT/RU/ES/JA don't deserve any support in their languages? — jmac ♦ 2 days ago
